If you could change the ending of any book (or series), which book would you choose? Why and to what?
MOCKINGJAY BY SUZANNE COLLINS
*sigh* Where do I begin? This last book in this amazing series really pissed me off. I mean, like I-don't-want-to-talk-about-it-ever-again kind of angry. With the end of a trilogy, I was hoping for some redemption, something kickass where I could do a fist pump and yell "Go Katniss!". It wasn't the case.
The ending wasn't satisfying for me at all. It infuriated me. All these unnecessary deaths killed me to read. But what really annoyed me was how things were left off with Gale. Throughout the series and in Mockingjay, Gale is Katniss's best friend who is always by her side. Always.
To have things end the way they did with him just leaving the district seemed so out of character I couldn't believe it. It wasn't the Gale we knew.
The funny thing is, my girl Suzanne LOVES the ending! Between us, we've had some heated discussions over it. To some, the ending was perfect. But for me, it just left a bad taste in my mouth. Opinions differ and although we both loved this series, there were parts that I wished never happened at all.
OK, rant over. What ending of a book or series would you change? PLEASE MARK SPOILERS!!!
I'm gonna read HG soon, so I just skimmed your answer! :)

A lot of people are choosing Mockingjay but I totally disagree! I loved the ending, I thought it was totally appropriate!
ReplyDeleteI'm just about to start The Hunger Games series, though I'm a bit worried since a lot of people seem to want to change the end of Mockingjay!

I was truly disappointed in the ending for "Awaken Me Darkly" by Gena Showalter. I mean, saving the hero by exchanging his blood for Jaxon's? I would have had it that the heroine's blood would have been the only one to save him because she's half Arcadian and human and it would be more compatible. It just left me feeling dissatisfied. Like the plot just got pulled out from under me. My brain didn't even want to accept a total blood transfusion as being feasible! I know its paranormal and anything should go in one of them, but it just felt...corny.
ReplyDeleteWow. I haven't been tallying which book's gotten more votes to having its ending changed, this or Breaking Dawn. It's getting close! Only a handful of people have chosen something else. I haven't read this series, but did hear a lot of people were unhappy about the ending.

Hopping through. I'm entirely with you on Mockingjay. I feel like Katniss settled.

*SPOILERS*
ReplyDeleteFor me it would be A Knight In Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. While it's one of my favorite books ever and I've read it countless times, the ending just breaks my heart. In most time travel stories, one of the characters leaves their time to be with the one they love. In this one, that doesn't happen. Nicholas is left in his time (1500 something) to live the rest of his life alone, while the heroine, Dougless, is sent back to present time and only has to wait a few days until she meets another man who supposedly has Nicholas' soul. So I really don't feel like they ended up together at all.
Nicholas had good reasons for having to stay in his time (to save his family from being completely wiped out), and Dougless did have a family she loved in her time, but I think it should have been worked out so they could be together. Them. Not a reincarnation type of thing. Nicholas is one of the greatest heroes I've ever read and I cry my eyes out every time I read this book, because my heart just shatters at the thought of him being so alone (we're told that he never marries) for the rest of his life.
