Lover Unbound
by J.R. Ward
Black Dagger Brotherhood #5
The most enigmatic of the Black Dagger Brotherhood is Vishous, with his warrior body tattoed with warnings, his chilling intelligence as sharp as a dagger and his hand that could raze an entire building, he is one, with which one does not fuck. But bullets still wound, and when he find himself in a human hospital with a bullet wound and Dr Jane Whitcombe staring down at him all his instincts rage that she is his. But that can't be, the Scribe Virgin has just demanded he do his duty and become the Primale, a Brotherhood member picked to mate with all the Chosen and be the baby daddy of the next generation of warriors.
For me Lover Unbound is the book that changes the series, both in tone and with all the revelations that it produces. Before this all the books were pretty much romance based and not much really happened that didn't relate some how to the main couple, I mean you had John Matthew appear and snippets from other Brothers and things, but mostly it was all about the HEA. This book introduces a little more, it is still massively about the romance, but other elements are heavily in play, the main ones being, Phury, the Scribe Virgin and the start of John Matthews heart wrending journey to his own HEA. I liked this, it gave me the sense of future characters and was a much better replacement for all the lesser POVs that have been in the other books.
Part of the reason I didn't mind V and Jane being eclipsed a little by other story threads is that unlike the other books, I wasn't feeling their romance as much as the others. I didn't really feel the connection between them, I can't put my finger on why, maybe because I have never warmed up to V? Maybe because it was so totally out of character for V; there was no warm up to it, it was like a switch had gone off and he suddenly did and felt all these things that were unexpected. However, maybe that was the point...But despite my reservations about the romance, I did enjoy reading about them, and V and Jane do have one of the best first-time-sex-scenes, I may think of some levels I can't connect them, but on a sexual level, they were hot.
Although so far this is my least favourite BDB book, I still rate it 5 stars, because IMO J.R. Ward, even on an off day, is still a great story teller, one ofthe best PNR writers. Like the other books her unique way with language, the way she writes dialogue, espeically between the Brothers reels me in,; I am addicted to her words.
Favourite Quotes:
..his fancy reputation was no more significant to him than his subs were. All that mattered was that he had volunteers for what he needed sexually. What was said about him, what the females needed to believe about him, was just oral masturbation for mouths that needed to be otherwise occupied.
****
This was real life cocoa. The kind you gave someone you love because you couldn't think of anything else to do and both of you were a mess. It was the kind you stirred while your gut was knotted and your mouth was dry and you were thinking seriously of crying, but you were too much of a male for that kind of display.

Great review, love V
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this one but I'm definitely looking forward to reading it!!!
ReplyDeleteV is such a deep, compelling, smexy character and I absolutely love the fact that JR did not compromise him--and she kept true to his character. V is my all-time favorite brother because he has sooooo many layers and we have barely scratched the surface of him here with this book. Wait til you read Lover Unleashed---GAH!
