Guest Post with The Romance Man!

Hello Maidens! Continuing with our BURNING UP JULY event, we have a special guest here today. You may have heard of The Romance Man. It's a fantastic blog that UTC likes to visit. Be sure to check out his reviews here.

Now, without further ado, please help us welcome The Romance Man. Today, he will be talking about his first experience reading erotic romance.Check it out!

Thank you to Angela for inviting me here today. I love the site and have been trying to read through it but keep getting distracted by that smokin’ hot redhead on the top of the page. She keeps staring at me as if she wants to say something – she is probably like most women and wants to tell me to leave.

Anyway I am The Romance Man and I have a blog where I discuss romance novels and other things. I am new to the romance world having read my first romance novel only about eight months ago. I was immediately hooked but at the time I had no idea there were so many different sub-genres.

Originally I was going to write a post about ten ways to have fun with a Sharpie and a clitoris but most of you are women and probably already know how to do that. So since this is erotica month on UTC I thought I would tell you about my first time reading erotica. The first books I read were contemporary romances and I thought they were all like that – enter Kate Douglas.

Kate started commenting on my blog and I had no idea who she was at first and then all of my other readers kept telling me I had to read Wolf Tales. Kate became and still is a regular on the site and has become my friend and she warned me ahead of time that it wasn’t like a contemporary romance. I said that’s fine as long as it is a good story I don’t care so I decided to read Wolf Tales. Kate keeps asking me when I am going to write my review of Wolf Tales. The answer is – as soon as I get out of the therapy it induced.

Going from contemporary romance to erotica is like going from Alvin and the Chipmunks to Debbie Does Dallas. I opened Wolf Tales and within four pages the characters were already fucking – and they didn’t stop – ever. Not only that but everyone was fucking everbody else – sometimes at the same time. There was no orifice that was safe and every orifice had a dick in it usually at the same time. It didn’t matter – the men were fucking the men and the women were fucking the women – then they would swap. There was even a M/M rape scene. By the time I was done with the book I was exhausted because when I read a romance novel I have to have sex with my wife after I read a sex scene and there so many sex scenes in the book that by the time I was done my dick was sore.

There is a lot of M/M sex in Wolf Tales which is not my thing but Kate is such a good story teller that it fit and although I didn’t read most of the M/M scenes I re-read the F/F scenes a hundred times so it’s like I read the whole book.

That was my first experience with erotica but it won’t be my last because I like it very much. I still like contemporary romances and I have even read romances that have no sex. A good story is a good story and if you can pull me in and make me care about the characters I don’t care so much about the sex. If you can do that AND add some sex – even better.

Ms. Douglas has graciously agreed to give away a print copy of either Dream Bound or Wolf Tales 12 to one lucky commenter.  International.

  1. LMAO. I read that book too...and yep, I'm still a little freaked by it, but I love erotic romance.

I lost my virginity with Lora Leigh. Not really someone who gently settles in to break you hymen. No, that lady stabs it with a fork and eats it. There was so much ANAL! Damn but that lady loves the back nine. And it was scary as shit for an anal reading virgin. I was petrified.

But now I love erotic stories. Not as much as I love a sexy, seductive, flirty romance, but yes I do love erotic romance.

  2. I have to log in under my wife's gmail account because for some reason I can't post. Thanks Eden and I haven't read Lora Leigh but may have to check her out.

  3. Ooh, I *adore* Lora Leigh's books (despite the crazy editing she's known for), particularly because of her affinity for--as Eden so delicately put it--the back nine. Not to mention her m/f/m books which are equally as awesome. I can't remember which one it was, but it was one in her Pleasure series that first introduced me to a story where there wasn't only a m/f/m relationship, but it was one that went beyond the bedroom. Before that I'd never understood how three people (or more if you're reading the Colter series by Maya Banks--another great series) could love each other and live as one unit. I loved it.

Great post, Remy! Gotta go. I'm busy femming up your blog for the day. Ladybug and I are conspiring to talk about so many girly things that your blue and GRAY color scheme turns pink. :) Ta ta!

  4. Okay-- true confession time. Now I am not sure I have actually read a book that falls under the erotica heading. I thought I had, but now I am not so sure ;). I need to do more research and get back to you.

I may not have time today-- Gina and I are really busy :). You do like pink for the background of the blog, right?

  6. Freaking AWESOME guest post! Best one yet! I loved it! I came across The Romance Man by accident recently and loved what he posted so now I follow.

My first erotic romance book was Tempting the Beast by Lora Leigh. I remembering being in such shock I had to have my husband see what I was reading! Never did I ever think books were written in that way. I ended up reading the entire 24 book series after that.

    Thanks for the post!

  7. This is the last time I am trying this...
    Great post RM.
My first erotic was an accident - I read a tamer story Jaci Burton wrote and found she had a sports series. Okay a very nicely built man's chest holding a football - what else can I say! The Play-by-Play series was my first and I LOVE them!
Just read the first two in Vivian Arend's SixPack series and oh my - I think I am stopping at book 2 - it was HOT - I can't imagine reading anything hotter and I anticipate the rest of the series getting HOTTER.
Great Job RM - and for the record I don't think mauve is the right color for the blog.

  9. Hi Rm....my first " taste " of erotica was Lora Leigh also. I loved her Naughti books. My only problem at first was that the cousins all shared the woman, passing her around from man to man. But after getting into the story , I realized that once they found their own woman...no more passing around! I love Kate, but Wolf Tales scared me a little!

See you back at the blog RM....Gina's doing a great job!!!

  10. Kate's Crew by Jayne Rylon popped my cherry. First pop at erotic and m/m. I was shocked but in a good way. I haven't looked back yet. I think Wolf Tales sounds great.

  11. And I discovered the Romance Man thanks to Taryn. (I'm supposed to be getting ready to go to work right now but I just couldn't help reading this) my first AND BEST Erotica book was Long Hard Ride by Lorelei James. Nothing better than a Cowboy to fulfill any fantasy! And happens to be I am reading Wolf Tales myself right now...FREAKIN' AWESOME!! U absolutely ROCK RM!!! I am one of ur # 1 fans! (after all the rest, of course) Sophie.

  13. I read Anne Rice's Beauty trilogy my senior year of high school. I look back on it now and wonder why no one took them out of my hands. No teenager should read those.

I love my erotica's though. Louisa Burton has an awesome series too. The Hidden Grotto, oh my wow! Those books are smokin!

  14. I cut my teeth with Qwillia Rain's "Diablo Blanco Club" series and then went on to Cherise Sinclair's "Masters of the Shadowlands" series. Both are awesome.
I now have a new website to follow (because I really don't read enough already lol). Thanks Romance Man. Anybody who can make me laugh this hard on a Monday morning is worth my time :)

  15. G'mornin, RM, and I do hope the therapy is helping. I see a lot of mention of Lora Leigh's books and yep, she's way hot. We both started writing the erotic stuff for publication about the same time, back in the very early days of Ellora's Cave. I think there were only twelve authors there at the time, (and three of them were the owner under different pseudonyms) but the NY pubs weren't putting out the hot stuff--at least not like they do now.

My very first erotic story was Fanny Hill when I was in junior high, which would have been around 1963, so it was DEFINITELY a contraband book. From there I discovered old erotic stories like The Story of O and eventually branched out. I read Anne Rice's Beauty series, but never could get into the story line for some reason. I think the series that made me think the most was non-fiction--Nancy Friday's books on sexual fantasy. The first was Forbidden Flowers, I think. It's been a while, but they are the stories that eventually led me to write Wolf Tales.

Sorry for the long comment, but I do love your post and I'm so thrilled to know that I'm the one who dragged you--quite willingly, I might add--over to the dark side.

And I'll go slap Gina around. No WAY are you wearing pink tights. I won't allow it!!!

  16. I loved this post! I would list all of the stuff I have read but I seriously think you folks would *look* at me funny.

I laughed so hard I snorted at the Lora Leigh back nine comment. It is prevalent throughout her Elite Ops series too. It seems her alpha males don't truly "claim" their women until they bump the rump.

I am definitely going to have to give Kate Douglas' books a try...in an air conditioned room it seems ;)

  17. Jessie make sure you have a man or a vibrator handy if you read Kates books.

I forgot to mention Kate agreed to do a book giveaway for this post but that is up to UTC. Let me know.

  18. That's funny RM Kate Douglas was my first erotic romance book I love wolf tales I picked up the first one and had to hunt the rest down. she also lead me to your sight so I am so thankful because your funny and everyone that visits your sight are good people like you

  19. My first erotica was when I was a preteen babysitter and discovered a professor's stash of X-rated books. I immediately volunteered to babysit for them every weekend that summer.

Remy, I found you through Kate and have lurked on your site ever since. BTW, your blog on 50 Shades and bandaided balls should come with a warning label. :-)

  20. The first erotic novel I ever read was Unfair Advantage by a friend of mine, Qwillia Rain. BUT she didn't warn me about the 3-some in the middle of the book. The whole time I was like what's he doing in there? Wait, this can't be happening? How in the heck can the three of them...OMG it's happening. Holy Jomoly!

Then I didn't speak to her for a week. ;)

  21. Great blog post, Mr. Roman (and yet another name for you)

My introduction to erotic novels was Lisa Marie Rice and Denise Agnew books. Both write great alpha males, and steamy sex scenes.

I haven't read any erotica as of yet, except for critiquing a short erotica tale for a friend of mine. I don't know if I want to read more after what she wrote, but I never say never, so I'm going to give a try, soon as I get through my current TBR pile.

  22. Loved the post RM!

I read the Anne Rice Beauty books as a Jr in high school and had no idea what I was reading. Flash forward a bunch of years and the first one I read and had a clue was Cherice Sinclar Masters of the Shadowland series and yes I read the first one and had to read all the rest :O)

  23. My first erotic romance was also by Lora Leigh. When I bought it I had just started reading romance & didn't know anything about authors, books or genres. I ended up not finishing the book. I guess it's best to say I'm more of a "vanilla" type girl. Men sharing women doesn't do it for me. Neither does f/f or BDSM. I've read a little m/m & liked what I read but it was not erotica. But having said all that I appreciate & respect all authors and the talent they share with us readers. The good thing about romance novels is that there is something for everyone.

  24. Thanks for being here RM. it really is a pleasure.
My first erotica I think is Olivia Cunning's Sinner's Series. Let me tell you the 3some and the AP shock the hell out of me!!! Never been the same since. LOL

And I do recall my first time visiting your blog. Jessica Scott had posted it in a FB group a little after it started and That post had me LOL. I mean, you just don't get any POV anywhere else. And your followers comments are also hillarious. It teally is a great blog
    Thanks again ~Angela

  27. LMAO big time RM. I've been to your blog and love it. Still a lurker though. My first was Lora Leigh's Breed series. Talk about reading with my mouth open in shock. lol But I've read almost all of her books. I have read Kate's Wolf Tales but only one so far.

  28. ROTL - Hilarious post! I'm not sure what my first "erotic" romance book was but I'm pretty sure it was an ebook. I've heard great things about Kate's books but haven't read them yet...lol....I have however read Lora Leigh and some others...lol

  29. It is refreshing to get a male's perspective---God knows I can't get my husband to talk about romance books. I would love to win the giveaway as I haven't read this book yet. Thanks for the recommendation!

  30. I forgot to answer, sorry. My first experience was Lorelei James' "Long Hard Ride". Man, was I not prepared for what I was reading. But that didn't stop me from coming back for more!!! I've read all the books in the series as fast as I could and like many of her other fans, I am anxiously awaiting the next book.

  31. I agree with you that as long as the story is good and well written, I don't care about the genre. It's been so long that I don't remember my first erotica read, but I sure do remember the first time I read Wolf Tales. Wow! Kate is a wonderful lady and I enjoyed meeting her and having lunch at RWA two years ago. By the way, my husband and I both read your blog and it's sparked more than a few "discussions".

  32. I remember reading The Thorn Birds in jr. high and thinking it was not only a moving story, but also awesomely hot! Flash forward. . .Cherise Sinclair, Kallypso Masters, Eden Bradley/Eve Berlin, Lorelei James, Megan Hart, Maya Banks, Joey W. Hill, Sasha White, Shayla Black, Sylvia Day, Cari Silverwood, Tymber Dalton, . . .I could go on, but the point is, they are very talented writers producing extremely erotic romances!!! I think I will go read some now!

  34. I discovered erotic romance after I won a copy of Maya Banks' "Undenied" and I was hooked. My favorite erotic romance authors include Lisa Marie Rice and Lia Slater.

  35. I was browsing a used book store and found Wolf Tales by Kate Douglas. I was looking for a paranormal romance so I took it home. I did not know there was a genre of 'erotic romance', just that the story looked interesting. Well, I was caught after the first 4 pages. I couldn't put this book down! I had to go get the rest of the Wolf Tales series, and once started I was oblivious to everything going on in the world! Kate Douglas turned me on to Romance Man and from there I have found ALOT of great writers and novels! And to think that just a year ago I couldn't find enough books to keep me occupied :) Thanks Romance Man :)
Oh yes, I have read those Nauti Boys also.

  36. Great post RM.
Wolf Tales was my first menage, m/m, f/f. When i bought it I had no idea all that was in there. I was reading this at work, and 1 of the men snuck up behind me and was reading over my shoulder. And it was the first menage scene! Since I work with all men, and with them knowing what I read, they ask me for advice, and what books their wives should read.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Regarding the give away, it's for either a copy of Dream Bound or Wolf Tales 12. If you choose your winner after tomorrow, I'll send the book out when I return from the RWA conference in Anaheim. And I'm perfectly okay with a winner from any country, so don't let location be an issue. Now I need to get some work done, but I love seeing RM out and about. More people need to get to know this guy!

  38. What a wonderful and highly entertaining post. LURVED it. I don't know a man who will admit to reading romance, and copping to Erotic Romance???!--You are da man, RM.
Wow--to start with Kate Douglas takes balls. I would have loved to have seen your first, as I remember only too well my reaction to my first Wolf Tales...
My first erotica? Can't remember the EXACT one, but Lora Leigh's Wicked Pleasure got me hooked on menage. YUM!

  39. Yeah Kate Douglas should be something you work into not something you read right away. It can be shocking.

  40. I do remember my first erotic book. It was about 5 years ago.
It was Kimberly Zant's "Surrender" and holy smokes I was blown away. One woman and like 5 guys. (it could have been more)

    Opened a whole new world.

    Funny guest post. Cheers,

  41. Hey RM! Great post...love seeing you au natural at another blog :)

Don't remember my first erotic romance...seems like I remember The Wolf and the Dove by Kathleen Woodiwiss being hot when I was young, but erotic when you are innocent is way different from as an adult...

I love Kate's and Lora Leigh's books, but my first and still sticks with me "Holy Jamoly" moment (thanks Marquita!) was when I read Morgan Hawkes' Victorious Star of her Interstellar series...some BDSM that made me squirm and menage m/f/m and m/m but what really had me bug-eyed was the "extra" attributes of the alien part of the menage....HOLY Jamoly indeed....

  42. What a great and hilarious post! Thank you for the laugh. :D
My first experience was also with Wolf Tales by Kate Douglas. I had no idea it was erotic. LOL I was looking for paranormal romance books on eBay and found an auction for the first four books in the Wolf Tales series. Needless to say, it was quite the eye opener when I started reading book one. But I love Kate's books so I eventually bought some of the others. Haven't quite collected all the Wolf Tales books yet, but I do have all the Sexy Beast books that have Kate's Chanku stories in them. :)

  43. Honestly I can't even remember the first few erotic romance novels I read because they sucked! All I remember is that they seemed like a bad porn - no story and crappy sex. Years later, thanks to some book blogger buddies, I've finally found some great ones :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. My first read was Lorelei James Long Hard Ride. I actually enjoyed it more than I thought even though I was surprised there was such detail in books of these things. Ha! I now follow the Romance Man and I think it's awesome a man reads romance.

    ReplyDelete
  45. My first erotic read was Personal Assets by Emma Holly. I'd been reading romance for years but nothing on the level of PA. I wasn't aware books like that existed,it was a definite eye opener.

  46. This is always so embarrassing to admit. About 4 years ago, I was just learning how to use Amazon. Long story short, I accidentally ordered Dangerous Boys and Their Toy by Shayla Black. When it arrived - WTH? But, I owned it and I didn't want to waste it so I read it. I haven't stopped reading erotica since. All because I added it to my cart because I didn't know what it was. So embarrassing....

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hmm...my first experience. I think it was Ms. Lora Leigh who popped that cherry. And what an experience it was. The Men of August. Not only was it my first threesome read, but my first orgy read too. Wow!

    ReplyDelete
  48. My first erotic book I read was Emanuelle which I 'borrowed' from my stepmom! I found a few books like The Story of O over the years until Ellora's Cave started printing their books. The e-reader was the next step!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wonderful post, The Romance Man! My first erotic read? Shayla Black's Wicked Ties. Damn. I still remember every scene. Wonderfully written. Scorching hot.

    ReplyDelete
  50. HAhaha, guess it evens out. Skip the M/M and reread the F/F. Someone should have warned you ahead of time, if your going to read erotica you better have your spouse/significant other close by =)
Great post! Glad you got hooked!
I remember reading my first erotic book, I couldn't believe what I was reading. Had to reread some parts just to make sure I wasn't making it up. Sucked in now, can't get away.
