Obsidian
(New Species #8)
by Laurann Dohner
This was my first Laurann Dohner book and I had no idea of the depth and complexity of her New Species world. Right as I started this book, I knew that I would love it. First off, Dohner has a unique writing style that is very smooth and easy-to-read. Reading is almost effortless and I plowed through this book so easily. Another thing is Dohner’s ability to accommodate new readers like myself who are willing to step into her world. As book eight in the series, I wondered how I would fare as I entered this already developed world, but Dohner is able to inform readers about what is normal and what is not very easily. It wasn’t hard to find a nice place inside her world and even as I finished the book, I realized that I didn’t want to leave.
OBSIDIAN starts off with a bang. Doctor Allison Baker is treating a New Species patient who has been captured by Mercile, their greatest enemies. In a coma, the patient referred to as 880 remains unresponsive after watching his mate tortured and killed before his eyes. Doc Alli makes it her next task to revive 880, even as far as removing him from his safe haven so that he can beat back the darkness that consumes him. Her touch and presence is what slowly brings him out of it. But now Allison must face the consequences of her actions.
One of the interesting things about this book is the fact that 880 – or later renamed Obsidian- is an alpha to the core. He can be rude and crude, completely oblivious to the human world and what is considered normal. He is damaged and tortured, yet there is his vulnerability to him. For example, he is possessive and dominant when he wants to screw doggy-style, yet he doesn’t even know how to kiss. Dohner creates a very interesting character in Obsidian. I found myself falling in love with him despite his obvious flaws. He is so tortured yet, he makes his feelings known for Allison in a more possessive way. In the end, his character is what kept me reading.
I’m very excited to have found a new author to explore. Dohner’s writing is fresh and well-written, her world is intricate and enticing and her characters are so endearing. I will definitely be looking for more books from Dohner!
