ARC Review: Forbidden by Jacquelyn Frank

The World of the Nightwalkers #1

When Docia Waverley wakes up alive from her plummet from certain death she begins to realize that life will never be the same again. She is now apart of the Nightwalkers world; a Bodywalker who now contains the soul of an ancient Egyptian queen. Ram is bound by loyalty to seek out his newly reincarnated queen and his best friend and Pharaohs soulmate, but he didn't expect to feel the heat and longing when he sees Docia. In all his long years he has never felt this comsuming desire for his queen and he is torn between his loyalty to his friend and King and his love for Docia.

I am never to sure when I open a Jacquelyn Frank book whether I am going to really like it or I am going to have to resist the urge to throw it across the room. With Forbidden I didn't really have either reaction. I liked some aspects of this book, where as others I found a little tiresome.

What I consistently like about Ms Frank's book is the Nighterwalker world, it has a whole host of interesting paranormal races that you don't see anywhere else. The Bodywalkers who were introduced in this book were no exception, they are two souls in one body that blend together. Although I was left with a few questions regarding the process of the two souls Blending, it was still a fascinating idea.

However, as interesting as the introduction to the Bodywalkers was, I thought the book was very slow, it never seemed to get started, even the romance was a bit lacklustre. I didn't feel the connection between Ram and Docia, they told us, right at the end that they were loved up but I never feel it was shown very well through out the book, maybe this was because so much of the book was devoted to world building.

I do have good feelings about the next book in the series, Forever, featuring Docia's brother Jackson. Ms Frank has set it up really well in Forbidden, so much so that I was more excited about Jackson and Marissa then I was about Ram and Docia.

The world has been set up nicely, and I can't wait to see more romance blossoming in the next installment.

Interview and Giveaway with Jacquelyn Frank

Welcome back, Jacki! Thanks for coming back to Under the Covers! What can you tell us about your new The World of the Nightwalkers series? Will we need to read your Nightwalkers series before we can dive in and fully understand what is happening?

Of course I WANT you to read the entire Nightwalkers series…I have a mortgage to pay after all. J But you don’t have to in order to follow along. We see glimpses of the original world at this point, but hold tight because as we move onward some old friends just might start showing up. J

This world shows us new Nightwalker races that we’ve not been aware of before…but don’t be too surprised because the original Nightwalkers never heard of them before either. Although there was that library…

Ram the hero in your new book Forbidden is a Bodywalker. What exactly is a Bodywalker and what gave you the idea for it?

Bodywalkers are spirits that have ‘invaded’ human hosts, for want of a better term, and are sharing the hosts body. Two souls, one body. But the visiting soul comes with really nice abilities, so it’s a fair trade…as long as you’re a host for the good Bodywalkers that is. The bad ones…not so much.

If you only had twenty dollars in your purse, what would you buy?

Shoes. Cheap ones, but shoes. Or cat food. Depends on the season lol. Kitten season I buy nothing but kitten food and toys and blankets and beds and…you get the idea.

If you could write a warning label for yourself as a person or an author, what would it say?

As an author: NEVER ever trust me to do what you expect. NEVER. ALWAYS trust me to get you where you want to go.

If you could pick anyone in the world to be the cover model(s) on your latest release, who would it be? (You can provide visual aids as well, preferably sexy ones ;P)

Oh yeah baby! Hmmm. Ram, our hero…that’s hard cuz he’s a blond. And I don’t go for blonds. But let me do my best.

Henry Cavil. Make him blond and he’s your man.

You are hosting a dinner party. Which fictional characters would you invite to the party and why?

The Cat in the Hat. Just cuz I wanna bitchslap him for giving cats a bad rap.

Since you are just starting out a new series, we figured that you would require new names for your heroines. May we suggest these fabulous names such as, Annie, Suzanne, Angela or Francesca? *waggles eyebrows*

You can suggest all you like…

We’re all friends here, right? So, come on, tell us...Have you ever...

Started writing naked...Constantly.

“Tested'” your hero and heroines sexy moves out, ya know, just to make sure they are realistic...
I do work from memory sometimes. Does that count?

Started staring at members of the public thinking "hmmm you look just like Jacob (or any of your other characters) ..." Then followed them around? Or is that just me?

I’ve looked and thought…(very rarely does this occur because, let’s face it, people are ugly) but nooooo…no following, ya freak.

Thanks so much for stopping by today!

Thanks for having me. And thanks for the great unusual questions! I hate the stuff I can cut and paste answers to because I’ve answered them so often!

From New York Times bestselling author Jacquelyn Frank comes this first book in The World of the Nightwalkers—an exciting and sensual new spin-off series in which the Bodywalkers, an ancient race of the night, battles the evil forces who prey on them.

The unexpected happens in an instant. On her way to work, secretary Docia Waverley hurtles into a crashing crossroads, and she quickly begins to suspect that things will never be the same. Then, when a tall, blond, muscular stranger intervenes on her behalf, telling her it is his duty to protect her at all cost, what is just a feeling turns to proof positive. That is, as long as Docia’s savior doesn’t turn out to be a crazed kidnapper.
When Ram finds Docia, he has no doubt that she is his queen. But as this golden warrior sweeps in to protect her, he feels something more than body heat every time they touch. He is overwhelmed by a searing connection that goes deep into the twin souls inside him. A desire rises in him that is forbidden—this woman is his queen, the mate of his king, his leader, his best friend. And yet Docia is so vulnerable and attractive that she awakens a hunger in Ram that is undeniable, a carnal craving he cannot yield to . . . not without risking the very survival of the Bodywalkers.

While Menes is obsessed with finding the perfect vessel for his queen, Jackson cannot stop thinking about Dr. Marissa Anderson, the gorgeous precinct shrink who keeps pushing him to confront his grief over the loss of his K-9 partner. But what Marissa really arouses most in Jackson is intense desire, which is exactly what Menes is looking for. To fight a great enemy, pharaoh and queen must join; but to host Hatshepsut, Marissa will first have to die. Fate has given Jackson a profound choice: save Marissa from Menes’ plan or keep an entire species from the brink of extinction.

Review: Adam by Jacquelyn Frank

Adam
by Jacquelyn Frank
Nightwalkers #6
3.5 Feathers

What a confusing book to rate! Not because of the time travel element lent over from sci-fi or highlander historical romances (why just Highlander ones, I have no idea!), but because the bits I liked best were the bits that didn't have the main characters in; Adam and Jasmine. How can I rate a book where I found the main characters annoying and pretty much the same as all the other couples in this series? How can I rate a book when the main character didn't actually appear until 20% through it, yet I like it all the better for it? It is a conundrum. But I settled on 3.5 feathers, as despite the repeatative, predictable and over wrought romance I liked the story and plot of the book.

Adam, Jacob's elder brother, who went missing 400 years ago and hasn't been seen since, so when he turns up at the precise moment he is needed it is a shock to everyone, especially the vampire bitch we all want to slap, Jasmine. After a brief encounter with him just before he disappeared she is left changed and wanting something she can't name. When he reappears, it seems she knows exactly what she has been missing for the last 400 years. Adam. Mean while, Ruth the corrupted and evil Mind Demon has been gathering an army of disenchanted Nightwalkers and is almost ready to strike a devastating blow on the Nightwalkers that will see them falling apart.

What I didn't like about this was very similar to what I didn't like about the other books. The romance. I found myself skipping pages or skimming through as I didn't have the patience to read a long drawn out love scene or listen to them having a deep converstaion about their feelings, I thought I would be safe from this with Jasmine, but clearly not even she can escape having an over dramatic heart to heart. But luckily in this one, although they are the couple in the book, they don't seem to be the focus.

The focus of the book is the fight with Ruth. I really like Ruth, she is one of the better bad guys in the PNR world, she truely is evil, I love it. And watching all the different races and couple come together and have one final confrontation with her was fantastic and what I have been reading for. I loved these parts of the books they were exciting and I couldn't wait to see what happened.

This series is a strange one for me, I continue reading them even though I know they will piss me off, but I can't seem to help myself! But this one is one of favourites of the series and if you have read the other books in the series you should read it just to see what happens with Ruth!

Interview and Giveaway with Jacquelyn Frank

You heard it from her yesterday.  Now we bring you a very unique insight into Jacquelyn Frank.  We got to chat with her, nothing off limits (as you can see) and had a blast, hope you enjoy it as well!

Thank you so much for stopping by Under The Covers and being part of our UTC After Dark event.  Since you've given us carte blanche to ask you anything and everything, we'd like to know which race of Nightwalkers has the best lovers?
Oh, that’s a tough one. All of my characters tend to be extremely sensual and considerate lovers. But if I had to choose I would say the Shadowdwellers. As soon as they come of age (rather young by our standards, I’m sure) they are schooled in all the ins and outs of lovemaking. Everything from how to be the most attentive lovers to how to acknowledge within themselves what kind of lovemaking is going to be best suited to them. So Trace, Magnus, Sagan, Malaya, Tristan and Guin of the Shadowdwellers have my vote.

Fill in the blanks! Out of all your characters you would...
Have a hot one-night stand with…Magnus
Marry..... Magnus (can you tell he’s my favorite? LOL)
Have some girl on girl action with… Jasmine, hands down. She’s fun and freaky. What more could you ask for?

If you could steal the brain of another author, whose head would be in danger and why?
Lori Foster. She is so wholesome in a way that truly reflects the human condition and no one writes real men the way that she does, in my opinion. I always cry when I read her books and my goal is to have my readers react to the way I write exactly the way that I react to her writing.

One day you are casually going about your business and a genie pops in to grant you three wishes. They can only be applied to yourself, so no world peace! What would you wish for?
1. To be youthful once more, so I can spend it more wisely this time.
2. To own my dream home that I have designed from the ground up, with lots of land so that I could rescue all the kitties that needed it.
3. I would want to own my own shelter!

If you could magically get two hot guys to oil wrestle for your pleasure, who would it be and more importantly, would they have to wear loin clothes?
Mike Holmes & Gerard Butler and no, loin clothes would not be necessary. In my fantasy they would be wearing kilts.

If you could bring one of your characters to life for the day, who would it be and what would you do?
First of all, that would be sad…to bring one of my characters to life for only day…talk about heartbreaking when it becomes time to say goodbye. But if it were possible, I would choose Gideon. That way he could heal all the sick people in my life and all those that we happened across in the time allotted. I mean, what better way to spend only a few hours then helping as many people as you could.

After a gap of 3 years what brought you back to the Nightwalkers series?
An avalanche of fan letters! Most of which contained things like; “OMG what about Ruth? You can’t let the evil bitch get away!”… OR “PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t end it with Noah! I NEED more Nightwalker bliss!!” I couldn’t leave my readers so unhappy, so I decided to do Adam.

What book are you reading at the moment and would you recommend it?
I only wish I still had the time to read. My e-reader is on the shelf collecting dust with all my print books beside it. I am listening to audiobooks, however. Right now it’s ELIJAH. The narrator, Xe Sands, did an AMAZING job on the entire series. I love listening to my words in her voice. Perhaps it’s not exactly how I envisioned everyone sounding like, but it’s just like any work of art. Everyone sees (hears) something different. No two people are going to come up with the same vision. But Xe got pretty damn close. Her voice is like butter and she makes the men in the series sound sooo sexy.

Which species of Nightwalkers would you most like to be?
Demons. I love the fact that they are purely elemental. That their race is so civilized, well-spoken and intelligent, that they have learned and grown from even their most heinous mistakes of the past. They are also real enough and flawed enough to still be making mistakes in the present. Plus, the power they possess is unrivaled, in my opinion.

What can you tell us about your latest releases "Seduce Me in Flames" and "Adam"?
Seduce Me in Flames brings us back to the adventures of the Interplanetary Militia in the Three Worlds universe. Rush “Ender” Blakely is part of the ETF, the Extreme Tactics Force, that aids in policing these worlds, helps in keeping the peace, and sees that everyone lives a reasonably happy existence. But when the Emperor of Allay dies, and a culture threatens to unravel, Ender is sent in to do a daring rescue. The object? The true heir of Allay. And she is going to test Ender’s character in more ways than he could have ever imagined. All the while, he is hiding his own secret that once exposed could threaten all that he holds dear.

As for Adam…

All I am going to say is… I can’t say anything without spoiling it! Adam’s book is going to be worth the wait!

Thank you again for stopping by and much success with your new releases!

Time to win something!  OK maidens we have a print copy of Adam AUTOGRAPHED up for grabs, open internationally.  To enter all you have to do is:

Review: Seduce me in Flames by Jacquelyn Frank

Seduce Me in Flames
by Jacquelyn Frank
(Three Worlds # 2)

This book took me by surprise. First, it doesn't really follow in the storyline of book 1 that much; yes it could pretty much be read as a standalone. Second, we don't the see much of the Chosen, which were a big part of the first book.

Rush "Ender" is HOT! I mean, literally. He's kept quiet about his mysterious power of burning this, his body overheats, he causes fires, he burns things and people. He's lived his whole life isolated because of this. Not even his closest friends and teammates for the IM (Interplanetary Militia) know about this.

He is assigned to "save" the princess and heir to the throne of Allay. Princess Ambrea is not your standard royal. She grew up away from court. Her father would've preferred she didn't exist and she was treated that way. Now with her father dead, she needs to be eliminated.

Of course the IM's job is to police the Three Worlds, and they want a fair chance for Ambrea Vas Allay to make her claim for the throne and ruler of Allay. Rush just needs to break her out of some pretty nasty catacombs, then out of her world and safely into the hands of the IM council.

I liked the fact that in their own way, both characters were strong yet innocent. Yes, they are both virgins, obviously each for their own reasons, but it gave them a sense of comfort.

For all that Ambrea seems like a breakable little girl, she can be strong when she needs to be and go after what she wants (i.e. Rush!)

We didn't get a lot of sex scenes in this book BUT when we did get it, it went on for what it seemed like forever! Good and bad.

In general I liked this story, it had some action, even though at times it dragged a bit too slow and things became a bit repetitive. As usual, I'm interested in Justice's story and I was happy to see Ravenna and Bronse as part of this story.

Hey all! Guess what happened recently? Yeah, okay, so you don’t have to guess. ADAM RELEASED!! WOOT!!!! ADAM!! Book six in the Nightwalkers series, came out on October 25th! YAY! Okay, so I am a little overexcited. What can I say? These past few months have been incredibly hard on me, so I am taking my excitement where I can get it. And here is definitely where I get it…

Oh don’t tell me you haven’t heard about ADAM! The next installment in the NIGHTWALKERS series? Come on people, get with it! You’ve been dying for this release for almost three years! Look, I’m not teasing this time! I have the cover to prove it. ☺

Ain’t he purty? I love his chesticles. They are my favorite. ☺

But in case you’re a newbie and haven’t read my work here is a little insight into my Nightwalker world…

There have always been people who live on the fringes of society, but what if there were entire species living on the fringe of human existence? We tell the tales of vampires and other things that go bump in the night, but imagine if there were entire cultures living alternate lives and life cycles to day-worshiping humans. This is part of the premise of my Nightwalkers series. Demons, Vampires, Lycanthropes and more, each its on race, its own society, living outside of human discovery. (For the most part. Apparently we’ve crossed paths enough to create our monstrous perceptions of them.) The series starts with the Demon race and slowly blossoms out into others, both known and unknown. They are complex cultures with histories they champion and histories they regret just as we do. When their existence begins to bleed into ours, it makes for some very intriguing discoveries about how very similar we all can be at our core…and how sometimes fate has plans for us we have absolutely no control over…wouldn’t you agree? So with that being said I hope you enjoy this small taste of what’s to come when fate decides she’s in the mood to play ☺

WARNING: YOU MIGHT GET WET!!

He changed form in the blink of an eye, morphing from man to a deluge of water that dashed against her face and body. But unlike normal water he did not cascade off of her and fall to the ground. Instead, he flowed over her supple body, slowly washing over and around her, covering her inch by inch. He felt the smoothness of her skin beneath his touch, the weight of her breasts…tasted the hard points of her nipples.

She gasped in shock when he first hit her, but that shock quickly changed to something deeper and far sultrier. The sound that erupted from her as he flowed over her was nothing short of purest sin. He took satisfaction in it.

And even as he covered the most intimate inches of her skin with his exploration, he knew he was going too far. It had gone too far the moment he had sat in the brush to stare at her as she bathed. But this, what he was doing now, it was a whole other level of perversion, and as glorious as she felt, he knew he was stepping way over the line.

Did you enjoy that? Now rush out and buy the book!

I’d like to take this opportunity to give you all cyber hugs, answer a few questions and say thank you SO much for your devotion to this series. That has allowed it to be translated into over half a dozen foreign languages including German, Thai, Portuguese an now the entire set is available in audio format by Tantor Media! (The fabulous Xe Sands does our gang of men and their ladies proud!) Anyway, I have wondrous things planned for you and this world in the future. Follow me on my website, Facebook, Twitter and blog and I’ll keep you up to date on me, my books, my life, my peeves, my cats, my kid…basically all the floatsam of my life. Oh, and on Facebook we have a neat roleplaying page you ought to join called Jacquelyn Frank’s Nightwalker World official role-play page. You get to watch actors play your favorite NIGHTWALKER characters, get to oogle the Hump Day Hunks on Wednesdays and a variety of other things as well. Oh, and the person who plays Ruth (cough) is sick and twisted and does a FABULOUS job, if I do say so myself. Hehehe. So…on to all the juicy details my avid and diehard readers have been waiting patiently to know…

*Yes, I do have plans for Tristan from the Shadowdwellers to get his HEA eventually. What form and time this takes shape in is a grey area at present, but there is an intention.

*Yes, I do have plans for the next installment in the Nightwalkers universe, and it is going to be spectacular! And as soon as it’s in writing you all will be the first to know because I will be shouting it from the mountaintops ☺

*My original intent when I finished Drink of Me was for it to be a stand-alone title. However, after massive amounts of fan mail begging me to continue, I have decided to give the idea some careful consideration.

If you haven’t heard of me or tried me before, I hope you will. A good place to start is either Book One of the Nightwalkers series, JACOB, or my stand alone title DRINK OF ME! I hope you pick up ADAM. It definitely stands on its own even if you have not read the first. (But I, personally, am a stickler for reading things in their correct order)

Here is a sample of JACOB on audio, ENJOY!

Also don’t forget SUPERNATURAL, an anthology that gives my devoted readers a long-awaited insight into what exactly transpires between Kane and Corrine that very first Samhain night. Remember, Corrine was near death that night, and Demon instincts don’t make leeway for fragility in a mate. (Especially since Demon mates are not usually fragile humans!) So what’s a Demon obsessed with mating to do? Check it out and see, In Stores Now!!

Thank you so much for having me, It’s been a blast!
Hugs & Kitties,
Jacki Frank

Jacquelyn lives in the Western North Carolina mountain area around Asheville with her ten male cats (no, that isn’t a typo) and about ten thousand voices in her head. Rather than take heavy meds to chase them away, (the voices, not the cats) she indulges them and brings their stories to life. She’s lived in many places and worked many jobs, which she says makes her ‘colorful, not inconstant.’ She is always rescuing one stray or another, be they animal or human, and thinks the invention of electronic reading devices could only be improved if they could just manage to make them smell like ink and paper. A self-admitted techno-geek, she loves all kinds of gadgetry.
She believes every romance should have a happily ever after.
You can often find her on Facebook. Join her fan page or visit her website.
