Review: Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris

Deadlocked
by Charlaine Harris
(Sookie Stackhouse # 12)

I've always had a special place in my heart for this series.  When I first started reading it, it got my love for reading back and made me think back to days when I would devour anything written by Anne Rice.  So it is with a heavy feeling in my heart that I have to say the past few books have not been to impressive.  Even though I consider this one was better than the last book, but there isn't much to talk about because, well, not a lot happened.

The first 85% of the book (LOL) was slow and with a lot of running around with Sookie that didn't do much for the actual development of the storyline.  So yeah the action and whatever revelations we get in this book all happened pretty much in the last 15%.  That's what brought my rating down.  Most of the book was actually a bit boring.

Without going into what happened and being spoilerish I'll just say that I wasn't happy with Eric in this book, I wasn't happy to see Bill portrayed as a nice guy again (for those who don't know I'm an avid "DIE.BILL.DIE" supporter, in fact I wouldn't mind staking him myself).  And Sookie was just different, like she's lost some spark in her and I can't seem to be interested in what happens to her anymore.

I am really looking forward to the next book more in relief that we are putting this story to rest because I think that as good as the series has been and as much as I've loved it, it is time for the end.

Review: Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris

Such a difficult book for me to rate and review. I finished it about a day and a half ago and I'm still not sure how I feel about it.

For all of you who are wondering if this book is better than the past two, which I thought were pretty bad, the last one especially, then please know that Dead Reckoning isn't bad, there's a lot going on, even though at the beginning it was a bit slow, but the story is interesting. It's much better than the last two, but at this point I don't think we'll ever get the same as we did at the beginning of the series. Too much has happened.

I'm a little biased about this series as it was one of the first series I started reading and I've always loved it. It's always been an automatic buy as soon as it comes out, and to be honest, it will continue to be.

What I liked
* Pam. She's at the top of my list of characters I loved in this book. She deserves to be happy! She keeps going through tough times, and Eric just keeps dragging her along with all his decisions.
* Eric. For a while in the book it shows us an Eric that cares for Sookie, even loves her, and is willing to forgive anything. Of course it helps that he likes monkey sex on swings.
* Bad guys from the past. We're still dealing with Victor, but Sookie has a little side surprise of someone else who's after her.
* We finally find out how Sookie became a telepath, as well as more of the fairy background story.
* Hunter. He's just adorable and needs to be loved and understood.
* Bubba!. I was so excited to see that Bubba was back, even though it was for such a short time.

What I didn't like
* Alcide. That's all I'll say about this. He's at the top of my WTH moments in this book. He just pissed me off. And there was no need (whatsoever) to go there.
* Amelia. This actually upsets me, because she's always been a character that I like throughout the series, and I just wanted to punch her face.
* Sookie. Yes, Sookie annoyed me most of the time in this book. Why are you having such an issue with dealing with all these supernatural things after everything you've been through? Like you could ever go back to just being a normal human, working your normal job and hanging out with normal friends? YOU'RE A TELEPATH AND YOU'RE PART FAIRY! And you have 2 fairies living with you. She just kept whining throughout this book. And then she goes and does something on a whim...
* Eric. Yes, he's on both lists. So what we find out towards the end, and how he's dealing, or better yet, not dealing with, just pisses me off. In a way, I can't expect different, he is staying true to character.

Who I still hate
There's only one here! Bill. I don't care how you want to wrap him up and present him as a suitable HEA for Sookie I just don't want to see his face, and he's always the opportunistic vampire to come "when needed".

The relationship between Sam and Sookie is also strenghtened in this book, and that's ok for me, as I've always seen them as good friends.

This book ties a lot of lose ends, but at the same time presents so many new ones that I really don't know where it can all go from here, I think I have more questions than when I started it. And quite honestly, I don't think the ending to this big mess will be where I wanted the story to go. As I said before, this is still an automatic buy for me.

Waiting on Wednesdays

Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse # 11)

Is anybody else scared to actually get their hands on this book?  I am!!  I've been a follower of the Sookie Stackhouse series since before the True Blood days and I'm sad to say that ever since the show started airing I've been continuously getting more and more disappointed with the books.  It almost feels like once Sookie and Eric got together, the chemistry, and even the action in these books started falling flat.

Which brings us to May 3, 2011!  I have high hopes for this book to redeem the past two and gives us an exciting new adventure, and bring back the passion between Sookie and Eric (Go Team Eric! You sexy Viking!).

It does sound promising...here's the blurb:

"With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. But Sookie suspects otherwise and she and Sam work together to uncover the culprit - and the twisted motive for the attack. But her attention is divided. Though she can't 'read' vampires, Sookie knows her lover Eric Northman and his 'child' Pam well - and she realises that they are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, she is drawn into the plot -which is much more complicated than she knows. Caught up in the politics of the vampire world, Sookie will learn that she is as much of a pawn as any ordinary human - and that there is a new Queen on the board . . . "

Chapter 1 is actually available on Charlaine Harris's site, I won't read it yet, but you can, just click here!
