ARC Review: Poison Princess by Kresley Cole

Poison Princess
(Arcana Chronicles #1)
by Kresley Cole

I should never have doubted Kresley Cole. To tell you the truth, I was worried in the beginning. I adore Cole’s Immortals After Dark series so I wondered how she would fare writing a YA novel. The opening chapter had me lost because it is a complete 360 to what I am used to from her. But I kept with it and found that KC puts a lot of effort into her debut YA novel. She makes use of the frame narrative where there is a story within a story and I found that it works very well with this book. It opens up with Arthur’s POV, which you will learn more about him as you read, and then it goes into Evie’s POV who is our protagonist.

Evie Greene is snatched out of her perfect life. Her designer clothes, lavish mansion and preppy boyfriend are useless when it comes to her hallucinations. Evie has been hearing voices and having visions for awhile now and she just came back from a trip to the crazy house. Now, as school is starting up again, a new crew of troublemakers are making their way into their school and Evie and her friends are not happy about it. The leader of the group is Jackson Deveaux and he is a Cajun hottie. With an accent that is to die for and a motorcycle that makes him a badass, Jack is the hottest thing that has come to Sterling in a long while.

It’s too bad that right off the bat Evie and Jack hate each other. They are from opposite ends of the spectrum – Evie is rich while Jackson is not. And that causes some problems for them. However, there is also this undeniable spark between the two that happens when they first meet each other. I have to say that I was impressed by KC’s ability to straddle the line between love and hate between Evie and Jackson. One moment their hatred for each other is so potent and the next, they are hot and heavy. I wasn’t sure how I would like Jack, but in the end, I found that there were great qualities in him as a character that I had to admire.

The first half of the book explores Evie’s confusion. She has several warnings and visions, yet she doesn’t know what they mean. KC keeps readers in the dark for the first half of the book so that you are as confused but determined to find out what it all means as Evie.

It isn’t until the latter half of the book where I felt all the pieces finally clicked into place. KC does a spectacular job of plotting out this book so that every little detail matches up. I especially loved Arthur’s perspective later on because it only added more excitement to the storyline.

There were parts in this book that were jaw-dropping. Like, I literally stopped and had to pick up my jaw from the floor. The word “shocking” doesn’t seem to cover it. I have to commend KC for being able to pull a fast one on me. It was fantastic.

Many of you are probably wondering about the level of sexiness in this book. As I said earlier, Jackson is a hottie. But I have also read a few YA books and have to say that this one is a little more sexier than previous YA novels. There’s great sexual tension, there’s some angst, some juicy jealously and some heated moments.

I loved the idea of the Arcana and how KC integrated that idea into this series. It’s smart and fun and refreshing because it takes the whole apocalypse idea and gives it a nice spin on it. And also, with an ending like that, I definitely need my hands on the next book! I need to know what happens next!

Covers to Covet

Two of my favourite authors recently released the covers of their next upcoming releases.  Urban fantasy author, Keri Arthur has DARKNESS HUNTS, the fourth book in her Dark Angels series. This book is set to be released in November of this year.

What do you think of the cover? They recently had a makeover and I do like this change better than the first two books of the series. I love the wings and the overall background color and the bold lettering definitely catches my attention immediately. I can't wait to read this book!

Now this next book is one that I am curious to know more about. I'm a big fan of Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series and her highlanders, so I wonder how writing YA is going to be for her. I haven't read much YA recently, so I'm hoping I will like this one. Either way, I will read it since it is KC. What do you think of the cover? POISON PRINCESS, the first book in the Arcana Chronicles series is out in October.

Romance Rewind: MacCarrick Brothers by Kresley Cole

Romance Rewind: The Highlander Edition

Most of us have heard of Kresly Cole's Immortals After Dark series but, did you know, before she started addicting us to her lickable Lykae and delicious demons that she has also written some historicals? And not just any historicals, but highlander ones? The mighitest of all historicals, the men in the sexiest skirts with the best accents ever to grace the pages of a book. To demonstarte, we have a visual aid to the right!

So we girls at UTC recommend that you start Kresley Cole's amazing MacCarrick Brother trilogy. The trilogy is about three HIGHLANDER brothers, who have an ancient celtic curse on them, but will true love overcome the deadly curse? We recommend you read and find out! Here is the reading order for the trilogy with our thoughts on each book:

If You Dare (MacCarrick Brothers #1)

Suzanne: All I can say is that COURTLAND MACCARRICK is MINE! I love the rugged ones, and he is a gorgeously ruggedly handsome mercenary just looking for a lady to love him *waves hands in air* oh oh pick me pick me!

Annie: A great read! I loved the clashes between Anna and Court, they were both stubborn and they sparked really well against eachother, and I couldn't help but thoroughly enjoy being caught in the flames! This book was hawt!

If You Desire (MacCarrick #2)

Annie: I preferred Hugh over Courtland, but both brothers seem pretty irresistible to me. Hugh is a little more polished than his brother, Court and he definitely has a better sense of control over his feelings. What I loved most about Hugh was his overall effort in everything he does. Like Jane’s father said, Hugh tries.

Suzanne: Aww, Hugh, what a sweetheart although Jane did strike me as a little bit of a cock tease. However, I really enjoyed the romance between them and I read this book in one sitting!

If You Deceive (MacCarrick Brother #3)

Suzanne: Wow, if you like your heroes dark and smoudering, this is the book for you! Although Courtland is always my man, I have to say she has saved the best book for last. Ethan is intense and dangerous with a dark past. Madeleine is a fantastic heroine, I really liked her feisty yet caring and loyal with an equally murky past. This trilogy ends with a fabulous book and I can't help wishing that Kresley Cole would pop out some more historicals for us!

I hope we have sufficiently enticed you into bed with these sexy, and did I mention, Highlander, hunks! It is  fantastic series leaving you hot and bothered, and planning a trip to Scotland...

Review + Giveaway: Lothaire by Kresley Cole

Lothaire
(Immortals After Dark #12)
by Kresley Cole

Lothaire the Enemy of Old possess an insatiable need for revenge against the Horde. After being cast out along with his Dacian mother by his father and King of the Horde vampires, Stefanovich, Lothaire vows to his mother that he will slay his father and become king one day. His plans include uniting the Dacian and Horde kingdoms together. This is his endgame, his raison d’etre.

That is until Elizabeth Pierce stumbles upon his life. Ellie, as she is most often called in this book could not be more different than Lothaire. He, dark, cunning and lethal. She, a spit-fire, loyal and loving. Though Ellie is a mere mortal, her body is inhabited by a death goddess named Saroya. Once powerful, Saroya is now condemned to live within mortal bodies. She lives to draw blood and deal death, which is why whenever Saroya surfaces and takes control of her body, Ellie wakes up to find herself in a bloodbath.

When Lothaire meets Saroya/Ellie, he becomes blooded. His heart begins to beat after centuries of remaining still. His lungs fill with breath once again. And ... other things begin to stir to life. Naturally, Lothaire, the maddened and most feared vampire in the Lore believes that Saroya is his Bride, not the hillbilly mountain girl. But in order for him to claim his Bride, Lothaire must dispose of Ellie’s soul from the body and make Saroya immortal, a vampire like him.

To do this, he must obtain a ring. This ring holds his one chance to keep his Bride, except locating it is his greatest problem.

In the meantime, Lothaire saves Ellie from jail where she is being held and almost killed. Saving her from death row doesn’t get any points for him because Ellie actually wants to die. To die would mean there would be no more innocent deaths on her head, and Ellie wants nothing more than peace.

Together, Ellie and Lothaire combust. One who is used to getting his way all the time, Lothaire isn’t used to the way Ellie refuses him. There were times when I wanted to slap him for hurting Ellie, but as you read this book, you learn that Lothaire never had any relationships before this. He has no friends, just a ledger with names scrawled on the pages that record the debts that must be paid to him. His madness is his only company, forever torturing him, allowing him no reprieve.

Cole stays true to Lothaire’s character. She doesn’t suddenly make him a “good guy” now that he is the hero of his own book. Called the Enemy of Old, Lothaire has created that name for himself. He remains ruthless and cunning, sometimes to the point where his actions are unforgiveable.

Though a mere mortal, Ellie sinks his claws into Lothaire. It was enjoyable to read his emotions – confusion, anger, distrust. No one else throws Lothaire for a loop like Ellie does. Lothaire reacts to Ellie in a way no like other. It is only then that the question of Saroya being his true Bride arises:

“Are you certain she’s not your Bride?”
“Careful, Hag,” he warned her, seething that she would even consider Elizabeth for him. “Your past employers might have forgiven your impudence; I will not.”
“I never predicted your female would be Saroya.”
“In so many words, you did. ‘A great and fearless queen beloved by vampires, who will secure your throne for you,’” he said. “Ellie Ann, late of Appalachia, just isn’t going to inspire Hordely, vampirely love.”
Though their times together may not be all hearts and goo-goo eyes, apart, Ellie and Lothaire wither. It is this conversation with Nix, everyone’s favourite cray cray soothsayer that became one of my favourite parts of this book:

He scrubbed a hand over his face. “I didn’t feel old when I was with Elizabeth. I felt like a young vampire, just starting out with her. The world was ours for the taking.”
“I envy you that feeling.”
After several heartbeats, he admitted in a low voice, “I’d go back to the grave if it would force Elizabeth to love me.”
What I loved about this book is that Lothaire and Ellie choose to make their relationship work. Fate may play a big part in choosing a Bride, but Ellie has the ultimate say in all things. I loved watching Lothaire be brought to his knees by the woman he loves.

LOTHAIRE - just as the self-titled book entails - will demand your attention until you flip that last page! Just as addicting as the rest of the series, Cole is my new brand of crack. I’d do anything for that next hit!

Lothaire Extended Trailer

You may or may not have seen this before already. But even if you have, there's always reason to watch it again and again. I mean, really. It's LOTHAIRE. And also because my man, Paul Marron is casted as Lothie. Swoon. Sigh. Thud.

I'm in love.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole continues her electrifying Immortals After Dark series with this thrilling tale, revealing secrets of the Lore, fierce realm of the immortals. . . .

ALL FEAR THE ENEMY OF OLD

Driven by his insatiable need for revenge, Lothaire, the Lore’s most ruthless vampire, plots to seize the Horde’s crown. But bloodlust and torture have left him on the brink of madness—until he finds Elizabeth Peirce, the key to his victory. He captures the unique young mortal, intending to offer up her very soul in exchange for power, yet Elizabeth soothes his tormented mind and awakens within him emotions Lothaire believed he could no longer experience.

A DEADLY FORCE DWELLS WITHIN HER

Growing up in desperate poverty, Ellie Peirce yearned for a better life, never imagining she’d be convicted of murder—or that an evil immortal would abduct her from death row. But Lothaire is no savior, as he himself plans to sacrifice Ellie in one month’s time. And yet the vampire seems to ache for her touch, showering her with wealth and sexual pleasure. In a bid to save her soul, Ellie surrenders her body to the wicked vampire, while vowing to protect her heart.

CENTURIES OF COLD INDIFFERENCE SHATTERED

Elizabeth tempts Lothaire beyond reason, as only his fated mate could. As the month draws to a close, he must choose between a millennia-old blood vendetta and his irresistible prisoner. Will Lothaire succumb to the miseries of his past . . . or risk everything for a future with her?

Review: Demon from the Dark by Kresley Cole

Demon from the Dark (Immortals After Dark # 9)
by Kresley Cole
Paranormal Romance

Demon from the Dark is one of my favourites of the IAD series! I absolutely love Carrow! She’s spunky, sexy, and downright hilarious! She is definitely one of my favourite heroines from the series.

To be honest, I was worried to find out who she would be paired with because she has such charisma and a zest for life. I needed to make sure she got the HEA she deserves. And after reading Demon from the Dark, I think Malkom definitely fits the bill!

Malkom Slaine is a vemon, a rare vampiric demon (How cool is that!?). His past is dark and horrific and Malkom doesn’t know much about love and affection. At an early age, his whore mother sold him to a vampire as a blood and sex slave. After that hurtful abandonment, Malkom was cast to the streets again after his vampire master tired of him. Fed up and tired of betrayal, he gets revenge by killing his mother and master. Soon he finds momentary happiness in his friendship with Kellan. But then they are both forced to drink vampire blood turning them into abominations. In the end, Malkom is the one to survive. But only because he killed his only friend...

Carrow has her own problems to deal with. Stranded on an unknown island and confined in a small room, she is offered her freedom if she can retrieve Malkom from Oblivion. She agrees only because they reveal a young seven-year old witch named Ruby, unconscious and orphaned, to her. For the child’s safety and their freedom, she takes up the task but once she meets the vemon, she soon finds herself doubting her ability to give him up.

Initially, I thought the language barrier was an issue. Somehow Cole managed to create incredible chemistry between the two even when they couldn’t understand each other. Plus, reading Carrow’s attempts at explaining “Nooo sex” through gestures to Malkom was pretty freaking hilarious!

The relationship between Carrow and Malkom is complicated. From the moment Malkom sets his eyes on Carrow, he knows that she is her mate. But Carrow wants nothing to do with the vemon. Her task involves retrieving him and that’s it! Cole always makes her characters work for their relationship and this one is no exception!

I have to mention how adorable Malkom is whenever Ruby or Carrow show affection towards him. He is not used being in the presence of people so when Ruby puts her hand out for him to hold, Malkom asks her if she’s injured. He’s clueless, but damn adorable too! I also loved the part when he looks over his shoulders because he assumes Carrow is smiling at someone else when they are alone in his shelter. Malkom is so sweet. Love him!

And of course, Ruby is too sweet for words. She brings so much life into their relationship and Carrow shows her growth from a wild child party girl to a responsible mother.

Demon from the dark is a really great story about growth and love. I can’t recommend it enough!

Favourite Quote:
How to say sex? How to mime sex? “Ah, gods, are you really going to make me do this hand gesture?” She made an okay sign with one hand, then threaded the forefinger from her other hand through it.
His eyes widening, he nodded empathetically.
Until she did it again while saying, “Noooo sex. NO.”
He growled.

Review: Kiss of a Demon King by Kresley Cole

Kiss of a Demon King (Immortals After Dark #7)
by Kresley Cole
Paranormal Romance
Find it on Goodreads!

HIS OBSESSION...

Sabine, Sorceress of Illusions: the evil beauty who surrenders her body, but not her heart.

HER DOWNFALL...

Rydstrom Woede: the ruthless warrior who vows to keep her at all costs.

THEY WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO WANT EACH OTHER THIS MUCH...

With each smoldering encounter, their shared hunger only increases. If they can defeat the sinister enemy that stands between them, will Sabine make the ultimate sacrifice for her demon? Or will the proud king lay down his crown and arms to save his sorceress?

You know that saying that still waters run deep? Well this book is what happens when those still waters are installed into a sexy demon king and then a hand grenade aka Sabine Queen of Illsions is thrown in them! Needless to say the results are explosive!

Rydstrom is hands down the sexiest demon EVER, and I loved his book, I know this is quite a few peoples least favourite, but they must all be crazy. The sexual tension, the sexy Rydstrom, the action, the hot as hell Rydstrom, a smart ass heroine who has become my favourite female in the series and oh did I mention the exteremly lickable Rydstrom?

As I mentioned above, Sabine has become my favourite female in the series, she was funny and slightly evil, although I think survivor is probably a more apt description of her.

This book was really great and another great addition to the Immortals after Dark series which seems to be getting better and better.

I am trying to think of my favourite quote, but there are just so damn many! So here are a few:

"Blah, blah, blah. Demon boy, I can't speak that language. Furthermore, I don't want to pollute my brain by learning it. So it's time for you to learn mine. First lesson-I'm Say-been. I'm oft described as byoo-tee-full and mah-jest'ick."

"You know, do nice shite for her. Buy her things. Really think about what she likes and what makes her happy and make it happen. She'll come around. And if she doesn't, you can cut off your horns for her. Chicks dig that."

In an incredulous tone, he said, "You don't know the meaning of virtue!"
"Of course I do-it means your thong must be white."

Review: Dreams of a Dark Warrior by Kresley Cole

Dreams of a Dark Warrior (Immortals After Dark # 11)
by Kresley Cole
Paranormal Romance

Dreams of a Dark Warrior is the 11th instalment of the Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole and let me tell you, this girl knows how to write! I’ve always said that Cole writes amazing prologues and Dreams opens up with an epic one! It’s 43 pages long and is probably one of my favourite parts of the book!

I will admit I wasn’t feeling Aiden that much. He reminded me of Lachlain from A Hunger Like No Other. He’s arrogant, possessive and gets pissy when things don’t go his way. But there were moments where I found myself almost...liking him. Out of all of his reincarnations, the original Aiden was my favourite, though Gabriel the Spanish pirate sounded promising.

Declan Chase pissed the hell out of me! I wondered how Cole could convince readers to fall for a guy who tortures his heroine in the previous book. I hated his guts and still did when reading the first part of the book! But then something miraculous happened and I started feeling sorry for the guy. That’s pretty epic since I was hellbent on thrashing the guy. In the end, Chase proved himself and I loved that fact that Reege loved Chase, not Aiden.

Regin is my girl! I absolutely love her fun-loving, prankster attitude. But in her book, we got to see a darker side of her where she suffers alongside Chase. The part when she starts crying in Chase’s arms is so sad. She realizes that it is not Chase who was forever cursed, but she was. To lose the love of your life over and over again is a hard pill to swallow. But somehow, Reege persevered.

I loved the new characters! Brandr was a great second-in-command! I hope he gets a book! Mmm berserkers! Also, Natalya was freaking hilarious playing cougar with Thad. This line is cracked me up: “Face it, Nat, this is one tiger who will never be jumping through your flaming hoop"

But my favourite character of this book is...yup, you guessed it! LOTHAIRE! He stole the show for me! I loved how confident and nonchalant he was during the entire thing. The dude is seriously bad ass and I really hope his HEA is NOT with La Dorada! I loved the part where the six of them are trekking through the mountains and the dudes are just bro-ing down and giving Chase advice on how to win Regin’s heart. Lothie’s words: “Live by the sword, love by the sword.” No doubt Lothie’s got a big sword to love with!

And did anyone else catch the fact that Uilleam has a mate now? Of course I already knew that because he is MATED TO ME! I wonder when Cole is going to write a book about us?

In the end, the entire gang showed up! Carrow, Malkom, Lucia and Nix! Love them all to bits! Now if only Kad and Sebastian came by to say hi, it would have been perfect!

Dreams ended so perfectly. So satisfying yet made me wish I had Loth’s book already! Cole, you are my crack! I’m so addicted, I can’t stop!!

Review: Dark Desires After Dusk by Kresley Cole

Dark Desires After Dark
by Kresley Cole
(Immortals After Dark # 6)

This is the first demon book in the series. And you might know how I like demon horns  ;) And the infamous horn job! LOL

Cadeon is the sexy, funny and carefree demon we met in Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night.
He has known that his mate is Holly for a while now, but she's human, and he can't claim her because she will not survive it. So he's stayed away, but he's constantly watched her.

Holly is a bit of a geek, has some difficulties dealing with real life, and has a huge case of OCD!!!!! It can get a bit frustrating while reading, but it also makes for some very funny moments.  And there's always the fact that Cadeon has to get her out of her buttoned-up shell.

And, oh, did I mention that she's a virgin?!?!? But a very curious one at that??? And our sexy demon is not shy AT ALL to let her explore and satisfy her curiosity. *As my thoughts drift to that patch of blond hair trailing down and disappearing into his jeans*
Except now Holly is not human anymore, she is part Valkyrie, and she is the Vessel, a very important part of the Ascension. And everybody wants her because they want to get her pregnant.  Her child will be a very important part of the battle.

We do get to see Nucking Futs Nix! As always I adore her! She's so funny! And always on target even in her crazy ways. Always has a purpose. Rydstrom was also supposed to be part of this adventure, but "something" happens to him and he .... can't make it! Oh boy... setting up the next book perfectly!

Review: Pleasure of a Dark Prince by Kresley Cole

Pleasure of a Dark Prince (Immortals After Dark # 9)
by Kresley Cole
Paranormal Romance

Oh Garreth please throw me over your big strong lykae shoulders and take me away... to a cave... preferrably with a not-so-steady-rock we can break together!

I knew when I read Lachlain's book that I would LOVE Garreth, and it's official now. GARRETH IS MY LYKAE! He's just raw power and sensuality, with the perfect mix of emotions. He cares deeply for his mate who has given him nothing but heartache and, in more than one occassion, physical pain. And he still wants her, has crossed the world and faced all kinds of obstacles to get to her and have her! His determination is admirable, his curiosity is endearing, he's charming and hot and understanding, and.... did I already mention how perfect he is??? You just want to pet him!!!!

She'd been born for him. And I was born to find her.

Lucia is amazing as well. After having gone through a very traumatic experience while still being a child, she has lived milleniums after pretty much repressed and alone and in fear. Except for the past year she's actually wanted something... or more accurately, someone. Garreth. She can't get him out of her mind, even though she knows she can't have him.

And then Nix comes in and throws the whole story up in the air and as always by making a mess of things she manages to get these two finally together.

I loved the text messaging between Regin and Lucia. I loved Nix's phone conversations and reference to her missing post-it notes! There was also quite a bit of action in this book, some giant caimans, a ghost ship in the Amazon, and lots of hot.wet.half-naked lykae! The next book has been set up really well. We get glimpses of all the kidnapping going on in the Lore, and I have to say... I can't wait to read about Carrow! Love her already!

Favorite Quotes:
"Understand me, MacRieve, I'm a Valkyrie. I'm not bound by your... animalistic needs." His voice a low rasp, he said, "After one night with me, Lousha, you will be."

"RegRad: gettng tranqued 2nite with the witches. Bet u wish u were here! LOSER!"

"Fine. We can act like we're fuckups idling about. As per our usual. But if we cap a god, I'm telling everyone I know! Two words: Press. Conference."

"Lykae in our backyard. Horde vampires seeking out valkyries all over the world. Happy accession!"

Covers to Covet

There have been some new cover releases this past week and I'm dying to share them with you all. Ironically enough, all these authors who I'm about to talk about are some of my favorites! So let's get started!

Lara Adrian, author of the popular Midnight Breeds series has just revealed the cover of Sterling Chase's book, entitled Darker After Midnight. This is the tenth book in her paranormal romance series and this book has a release date of January, 25, 2012.

There is also more great news for lovers of this series because...Lara has recently signed on to write another two books in the series, and there will also be an exclusive, e-book original novella coming out later this year. We know a lot of you will want to know if the novella will be Gideon and Savannah's story. Not this time, but Lara definitely has plans to tell their story in the near future. Isn't this great news!?

What do you think of the cover? I think it looks very sensual! I love it! But when I first saw this, my eyebrows shot up becauuuuuuse....CHECK THIS OUT!!

This is Shayla Black's cover for her upcoming book entitled Belong to Me. This is the fifth book in her Wicked Lovers series! Same picture, right? But it looks like the guy in Lara's cover has a little more hair. Okay, maybe I'm looking too much into this! I'm playing "spot the difference!"

Belong to Me will be released on October 4th, 2011 from Berkley Heat.

Here's the blurb:

She’s undercover and in over her head…

When FBI analyst Tara Jacobs’ fellow agent and best friend goes missing while investigating a sex ring, Tara goes undercover as a submissive in a Dallas BDSM club called Dominion. But no man can top a woman with Tara’s moxie convincingly enough—until an edgy, dangerous Dom takes control of the scene and sets her heart racing with a single, commanding glance. Too bad he’s also the man who stole her innocence years ago—and the one to whom she will never submit.

He’s got everything under control…until he falls for her again.

Navy SEAL Logan Edgington once left the woman he loved to save her life. He knows Tara will never forgive him, but he has no doubt that he possesses the knowledge to master her fears and the strength to guide her through an unfamiliar world of pleasure and pain. He alone can protect her on a dangerous mission that reveals both wicked depravities and terrible secrets. Logan relishes the exquisite torture of holding her again, feeling her uninhibited response. No matter how much Tara insists their fling will end after this mission, he’s determined that she will be his again—and this time, he’ll never let her go.

And now, last but not least! Kresley Cole has just revealed her newest IAD cover! Lothaire is one of my favourite characters in her entire series! What do you think of the cover???

I say this countless times so you're probably bored of it now, BUT I LOVE PAUL MARRON! What do you think of his sultry red-eyed stare? It ...kinda freaks me out! He looks good, but kinda freaky too, which I think matches Lothie! He's even got the pale hair!

The one thing I'm not exactly thrilled about is the book titled. Lothaire? Really? I know I used to complain in the early days about all the alliteration in Cole's titles, but LOTHAIRE just seems a little boring compared to all the other cool titles.

That's it for this edition of Covers to Covet!!
