This week's question:
"Book abuse!  What's the worst thing you've done to a book."

Our Answer:

Francesca:
I don't normally dog-ear pages, and I am all around careful when reading a print as far as not having liquids around or food etc.  But I do the classic roll-over thingy while reading.   Luckily, it doesn't leave much permanent damage.  I have been known to throw my tablet or ipod but no matter how pissed, I only throw it on the bed.  At least I know I'm not ruining it but I get to release some frustration.

Annie:
I'm usually pretty good with keeping my books in good condition. I always use bookmarks *looks pointedly at Angela* but this ARC I read this week was bounded so tight that I had no choice but to bend the cover to read it.

I've only throw one book at the wall and that was a hardcover copy of Faefever by Karen Marie Moning. That cliffhanger ending killed me.

Angela:
This is the worst I've done. The book was so good I could not wait until I got home to get sticky notes. So, I folded the corners. Oh and I refuse to say which ARC it is.  LOL

Suzanne:
I confess, I dog ear my books! Although my book shelf you will find books with ragged edges and battered covers through a mix of being thrown around in my bag and the bookmark fairy stealing my bookmarks (I hate that bitch!)  making me have to dog ear the corners. Of course if anyone else did this to my books I would have to end them....

Now it's your turn!

Review: Intimate Enemies by Joan Swan

4.5 Feathers
Intimate Enemies
by Joan Swan
(Covert Affairs # 1)

Intimate Enemies is an impressive novel that got me hooked right from the first few pages. This action packed, heart-pounding suspense, love story played like a great movie in my head. The plot, characters and dialogues were portrayed realistically and definitely engaging.

Mafias in Mexico and various gangs rule the streets and most are involved in drugs, kidnapping, human trafficking, and murders. This book is full of corruptions but, truth be told, this story is of fiction but still holds a fraction of truth about this country, unfortunately.

Fortunately for us, Ms. Swan has given us a super sexy undercover cop to save the day and boy, did he ever. Rio Santana exudes confidence and reeks of alpha traits. It was so hard not fall in love with him. I found a picture of Ms. Swan’s Character Inspiration of Rio in one of the social medias and I just had to share. This man is hot and I had him in my head the whole time.

Of course, with a beautiful hero comes a beautiful heroine. Cassie Christo is not only beautiful she is also smart, independent, proud but hardheaded, jaded and the stepdaughter of the man Rio plans to put away. Yup, Ms. Swan doesn’t make it easy on Rio but they were great together!

Heavy on the romance element but the suspense is just as strong. Ms. Swan had me at the edge of my seat from the plot and had me holding my breath from the sexual tension and the steamy sex scenes. Overall, a highly recommended read and I cannot wait to see what she has next for this series.

Review: Because I Said So by Beth Kery

Because I Said So
by Beth Kery
(Because You Are Mine # 5)

There are some things in life that one could be only so lucky to get a good instructor to guide you through them.  Ian manages to be that great instructor on two things for Francesca.  He teaches her how to drive and the art of the blowjob.

Really not a whole lot more than this happened in these two chapters.  Of course I can't complain because wow that was hot!  Ian was as always extremely hot and over the top, going as far as hiring a personal shopper and tailor for Francesca.  He also lets go of some of his control at times, but never 100%.  I can't imagine if and when he does.

Francesca was a bit on the annoying side for me when she gets defensive about him having to accept her the way she was and if that meant that she couldn't afford to buy a dress to attend an event with him then that meant he had to deal with it not buy her a dress.  It is childish to think that such a rich man, that wants to bring you as his date to a fancy party, would be ok with you showing up in your own clothes only to feel out of place.  That's more common sense than him trying to buy her.  But that's just my opinion.

And if you have to take one sentence away from this review of what to expect in this installment, then take this:
"I happen to be very demanding when it comes to fellatio."

Review: The Mad Lord's Daughter by Jane Goodger

The Mad Lord's Daughter
by Jane Goodger

Melissa Atwell has spent eighteen years of her life closed away from society and its perils. Her father believed she would perish from a disease as her mother did if she had contact with the outside world.

Not only is she basically locked away, but contact with her is through gloves. While she is a prisoner in her own home, she is highly educated but naive.

When her father passes away, she is sent to live with her uncle, the Earl of Braddock, who attempts to prepare Melissa for a season in London and hopefully a quick marriage. Once Melissa is installed in her temporary home with her family, feelings she never knew possible begin to awaken. A forbidden attraction comes to light that threatens to bring dark secrets to the forefront of proper London society. Will Melissa be able to survive her season in London? Will her secrets bring her down low or will she be freed from her isolation? All is revealed in The Mad Lord's Daughter by Jane Goodger.

This was my first read by Jane Goodger and I must say that I enjoyed it thoroughly. If I went more in depth with this review I would be giving away too much of the story, and I do not want to ruin it for anyone. Watching Melissa open like a delicate flower is so charming. The way her new family take to her is delightful and finding out all the dark secrets in The Mad Lord's Daughter, make this a must read. Once the hero of the story is revealed and we get to know this honorable man, we see him struggle with a promise he makes, or his feelings. The story is beautifully written and I will be reading more of Jane Goodger.

ARC Review: Taken by Benedict Jacka

Taken
by Benedict Jacka
(Alex Verus # 3)

After unexpectedly surviving and defeating some powerful mages Alex Verus has begun to develop a reputation again in the mage community for getting problems solved. When he is approached and asked to investigate apprentices going missing, literally vanishing into thin air and are untraceable by means both magical and mundane, what he finds are a mysterious house, a dangerous rakashasa and two apprentices who seem to be in the middle of it all.

I am really getting into this series, the previous two books have been great and this one follows suit. It is action packed and full of excitement and has a plot in it that is interesting and complex enough to keep you guessing. But what I like best about this book and series is Alex, the main character, he is a great vehicle to tell the story through, he is constantly underestimated as he has less power then most other mages, making the books more exciting as it doesn't always seem like he will prevail.

There doesn't seem to be any over arching plot on these books, but these books do seem like they are giving you a taste of the world Mr Jacka has created and with each book it gets richer, although it may not be the most original setting, it is well done and the writing is good enough for it not to really matter.

I know we mainly review romance here, and this book doesn't actually have any, although I am hoping some will develop in the future, but don't let that scare you off, it is worth trying, and what it doesn't have in romance it makes up with in other things. It was another entertaining book in the series, it kept me glued to the page trying to figure out how Alex would win this time and I can't wait for the next book.

Review: The Emo and the Jock by N Phillips

The Emo and the Jock
N. Phillips

Much like the mixing of two of your favorite foods that would never seemingly go well with each other until you give it a shot and suddenly discover that it the next best thing since sliced bread, there is something equally amazing about putting together two characters who couldn't be more opposite and finding them falling for each other. The story of the Emo and the Jock is just like that.

Meet the Emo: Evan Harris. He is a loner and the only emo in a small town school. He lives with his deadbeat father who uses him as a punching bag. He's artistic. He works at a music store. And he is failing Algebra.

Enter the Jock: Cole Morgan. He's the school's star football player. He is gay but has not come out except to his ex-boyfriend, Charlie. His family is rich, but his parents are too busy to spend much time with him. He excels at Algebra and just became Evan's personal tutor. Oh, and I forgot to mention, Cole has had a faraway crush on Evan for the past couple of years.

Rather quickly, Evan and Cole form a friendship: these two seemingly different boys realize they have more in common with each other than meets the eye. Evan takes well to the tutoring, but starts to wonder why, when he has always been seemingly straight, Cole causes him to have butterflies in his stomach. Evan begins to evaluate his romantic feelings for Cole, and before long, Evan is experiencing many firsts with Cole (hubba hubba!).

The development of both a friendship and a romantic relationship between Evan and Cole is very, very sweet. But while this takes place with the boys in high school, this is not a Young Adult book. Moments between these two fellows are very intense and quite hot! And there is something even sexier when at least one of the guys is experiencing everything for the first time.

Everything cannot be all rainbows for these guys, however - Cole's crazy ex-boyfriend, Charlie won't allow it. He is possessive, irrational, continues to swim in a famous Egyptian river, and is just plain psychotic. His actions are a bit ridiculous and just a *tad* over-the-top for a scorned ex-lover, but sadly there are some high-schoolers these days that do behave in such deranged ways. I do have to say, however, my inner bitch was happy and thankful for one thing that Charlie did. At least he did one good thing.

So, going back to that recipe analogy, if you are looking for a sweet story about young love that defies the rigid boundaries of defined character aspects, (much like taking the salty goodness of bacon and dipping it into the uber sweetness of chocolate), and you don't mind a bit of ridiculousness (because, really, who would have previously thought bacon and chocolate could work together?), The Emo and The Jock is just for you. Try it while eating chocolate covered bacon, and I guarantee you'll enjoy both.
