Nathan, Lord Valencourt has been having nightmares, nightmares that unfortunately are all too real. A monster is loose and murdering women and making Nathan watch as he drinks their blood and takes their flesh. But the one the monster is really after is the mysterious Juliet and though he does not know her, he knows he must find and protect Juliet with his life if needs be.
I really liked this book the story was told in first person POV by Nathan and so we took the journey with him into the world of vampires, or more accurately the cursed Taleians, and the paranormal. Nathan also makes a more personal transition from being a womanizing Lord with no real purpose in life to Knight of Swords a powerful leader and protector of the Queen of the Taleians, Juliet.
The plot itself was action packed, it had plenty of tense moments and once I started reading it I had trouble putting it down until I knew what had happened. The story also had a touch of horror to it, the villain was truly vile which was particularly demonstrated in the beginning scene which I warn you is not for the faint of heart! The writing was great as well the slightly formal wording transported you straight into the time and place, the way that Nathan thought and all the characters spoke seemed very accurate to the time and not just a contemporary story in historical packaging.
The connection between Juliet and Nathan was really well done as well, you could really feel the bond between them, so much so that it wasn't until the end that I realized that the amount of time they had spent in each others physical presence was fairly small. The other characters were also well drawn especially Gabriel, I found myself liking him despite myself, I know he was power hungry and ruthless but some of the best heroes are that way and I couldn't help feeling sorry for his plight.
This was an entertaining read and I know I am going to have to read the next one because of that dang cliffhanger!
