ARC Review: The Sweetest Torture by Amanda Bonilla

The Sweetest Torture
by Amanda Bonilla

Torn apart by a betrayal, Logan and Cait long for each other’s company yet still cannot get over the past hurts that have separated them. Thirty years ago, Cait left the Alpha cougar shapeshifter when she caught him in bed with another woman. Not a woman to simply brood, she takes initiative and with the help of her father, she is able to take everything Logan has worked hard for away from him.

Now, with an impending war, the only way to make peace is to have Cait and Logan marry. Cait uses this one chance to exact revenge on Logan once more so he learns from his grave mistake. But one touch from him and she melts...There’s no denying that her once potent feelings for him still linger just beneath the surface.

Amanda Bonilla has created a unique world. Fusing together politics and drama into such a tight word count is a very difficult thing to do, yet Bonilla really manages to bring this world to life. Passion and fury are very much evident in both the hero and heroine. Cait harbors some unspent anger that she wishes to unleash on Logan once more, but beneath that is her reluctant love for him as well. Her fury would not be so potent if she hadn’t loved Logan so much, making his betrayal that much more harder to bear.

I wondered how Bonilla would work this HEA out. But WOW, she really threw me for a loop! She managed to completely blindside me and redeem Logan in a way that made his efforts to make peace with Cait more endearing.

 THE SWEETEST TORTURE is a story about love lost and found again. It’s a short, but scorching hot read that has intense passion, interesting politics and a unique world. This is definitely a book I wish was a full-length novel instead of a short. After finishing it, I only wanted more!

Interview and Giveaway with Amanda Bonilla

Holla Maidens! Today we have a special treat for you! Urban Fantasy author, Amanda Bonilla is back at UTC to bring you a little somethin' somethin' and to talk to us about her upcoming release, BLOOD BEFORE SUNRISE! I highly reccomend this series to all UF readers. You don't want to miss this series!

We got a chance to chat with Amanda recently. Here's what went down!
Thanks so much to UTC for having me back on the blog! I love talking books with you guys!

What was the inspiration for your series?

It’s funny, I don’t have a clear-cut inspiration. Darian literally just popped into my head. She was so defined as a character from her first words of narrative that Shaedes of Gray (book 1) really poured out of me. I thought about the stories that I loved with emotionally messed up heroes and I wanted to turn the tables and make my heroine the emotional wreck.

Djinns are not very common in the paranormal romance world. What made you choose that as a major character in your series?

When I got about five chapters into Shaedes of Gray, I realized that at his core, Tyler was a protector. And I thought it would be really cool to have this protector who was so dedicated to you that he’d grant your wishes. A lot of the djinn mythology portrayed them as mischievous demons. And evil, which didn’t mesh with my vision of genies. So, I picked through the myths and ended up writing my own mythology.

What authors would you say have influenced your writing?

There are so many! My very first paranormal read was Anne Rice’s THE WITCHING HOUR. I was instantly hooked on her vivid descriptions and tortured characters. I also have a deep undying love for Patricia Briggs. That woman can tell a story! I’ve seen clips of her talking at events about writing. She’s just really inspirational. I also love J.R. Ward and Kresley Cole. I’ve learned a lot about weaving continuing story lines from reading their books. The longevity of both of their series is really impressive!

BLOOD BEFORE SUNRISE is your second book to be released. Now that you have a release under your belt, what thoughts are going through your head right now and do you feel less anxious now that the series has gained some loyal readers?

Actually, I do feel a little less anxious, which is a good thing! I’m such a people pleaser that I worried myself sick over Shaedes of Gray. Now, I feel like I know what to expect and I’m much more confident in myself as a writer. I can’t please all of the people all of the time and that’s okay. All I can do is write the best story I can write. I have to say, seeing the words “loyal readers” just put the biggest smile on my face!! The coolest thing about readers is that they have your back. You know how they do those trust exercises in high school where you fall backward and your team-mates catch you? That’s totally how I feel. I love readers!!

Darian is a strong-willed woman who does whatever she wishes. What was it about Darian that made you write a series from her POV?

Her voice was so strong in my head. It was like she said, “You’re writing me this way whether you like it or not.” She and I are nothing alike. Well, I think we’re both sort of dry humor-wise, but that’s about it. I kept thinking about how cool it would be to have this damaged heroine who was already close to scraping rock bottom. I wanted to take her even lower and then see what happened when she climbed her way to the top for the first time in her life. Honestly, she sort of scares me. LOL. Writing her is like therapy! I get to work on being a stronger person because of her.

There is an interesting character in Fallon in this book. Can you tell us your thoughts on this mysterious guy?

Fallon has been one of my favorite antagonists to write. I don’t really like to call him the villain or the bad guy because Fallon is more of a product of his environment and circumstances. He’s definitely done some very bad things, but his damage came from a very real, emotional place. I enjoy characters like that. I don’t want them to always act just for the sake of being evil. I want to know why they’re the way they are. What motivates them? What brought them to this? And Fallon is absolutely six eggs short of a dozen!

If Darian were in a cage match with another UF heroine, who would she like to be up against and who do you think would win?

I think Darian would like to go up against Xhex from J.R. Ward’s BDB series. They’re both emotionally detached badasses! Honestly, I’m not sure who would win. Darian can become incorporeal which is a definite plus, but since Xhex is part Sympath, she could really lay down the mental mojo and use Darian’s emotional history against her. I might have to call it a draw. ;)

If you could collaborate with another author (dead AND alive) who would you pick and why?

For an adult UF project, I’d probably pick Amanda Carlson. We have really similar writing styles and our brains seem to think in the same patterns. I bet we could get our characters into a lot of trouble! And don’t laugh, but, it would be totally cool to collaborate with William Shakespeare on a paranormal romance project! That dude would bring on the angst!

If you could go on a date with any hero, who would you pick and where would you go?

Oh that’s EASY, and for this question, I’m going to pretend that I’m single. LOL. My ultimate hero date would be with John Matthew from the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I loooove him! And we’d go straight to my bedroom. Or my couch… or my shower… or… well, you get what I mean. ;)

Just letting you know, Francesca might have a problem with that since that's her boyfriend. LOL ;)

We always talk about our favorite authors and books. What is the latest book you've read that you would recommend?

I just finished Larissa Ione’s LETHAL RIDER. Her Lords of Deliverance Series is one of my all-time favs. The world-building is amazing, and she does such a great job writing the male POV. I love that her heroes are so dark. I like the angsty males!

As an author who is active in social media, how do you like it and where do you draw the line when giving information or commenting on strong opinions?

For the record, I’m a social media junkie! I love the interaction! But there can sometimes be a fine line between stating your opinion and coming across as a raging lunatic. For the most part, I try to avoid the drama llama. I did respond in a blog post once, to an article about the damaging effects of reading romance on women, however. I felt like I needed to respond to that one. Women should NEVER be ashamed of what they’re reading. Anyone who knows me would say that I’m pretty laid back. I try to avoid confrontation. I think if you put positive vibes out into the world, positive things will come back to you. I approach social media the same way. I’m there to form relationships with like-minded people. It’s not a numbers game to me. I really feel more at home talking with readers on Twitter and Facebook than I do with the people who live in my own town sometimes. I just love the reading/writing community! On the flip side, while I like to talk about everyday life, I want a little bit of anonymity too. For the most part, I try to be pretty quiet in regards to my kids. Some things just need to stay private, you know?

Thanks again for having me as a guest! You are an AWESOME group of ladies!

We love having you here, Amanda!  Thanks for stopping by and chatting!

Amanda is graciously giving away a copy of Blood Before Sunrise, the second book in her Shaede Assassin series.

“She needed a bargaining chip and this was it. Raif’s daughter’s life for hers. And he knew damn good and well I was right. Just like he’d assured me the night I’d killed Azriel, this was far from over. His daughter was alive, I knew it. And I was going to find her.”

For months Darian and her Shaede guardian Raif have searched for the Oracle who attempted to overthrow the Shaede Nation—and kill Darian in the bargain. But now that they’ve finally found the half-crazed Oracle, for their efforts they are granted a possibility too painful for Raif to imagine, and too enticing for Darian to ignore.

Darian is determined to reunite Raif and the daughter he thought was dead, but her mission quickly proves dangerous when her lover Tyler is almost killed. And when a brooding and mysterious Fae warrior offers his guidance—at an extraordinary price—Darian finds herself willing to risk everything. As her single-minded hunt turns into an obsession, and she and Tyler grow further apart, Darian finds herself caught between the man she loves like a brother, and the man whose love she can’t live without…

ARC Review: Blood Before Sunrise by Amanda Bonilla

(more like 4.5 feathers!)
Shaede Assasin #2
by Amanda Bonilla

Darian’s to do list just keeps getting longer. In BLOOD BEFORE SUNRISE, Darian has her hands full as she tries to reacquaint Raif, the man whom she loves as a brother with his daughter. It sounds simple enough, right? However, things seldom are for Darian. Her boyfriend, Ty is attacked and things only begin to worsen from there...

Readers who loved SHAEDES OF GRAY will surely get a kick out of this book! I enjoyed the first book of this series, but I can truly say that Ms. Bonilla has outdone herself. Not only is this book action-packed from beginning to end, but Bonilla fuses interesting elements together that make for a world that is totally unique and engaging.

The Fae world is explained in detail and along with that, stories of characters that are tied to the world are revealed as well. There is one character that was particularly compelling to me. In his very first scene, Fallon intrigued me. I instantly wanted to know more about this mysterious Fae warrior and Bonilla delivered his stories in spades! My emotions were tugged from opposite ends of the corner as easily as his emotions changed. Any author who is able to make me love a character, change my mind and then redeem him is spectacular in my eyes. I would love to read more about Fallon!

In this book, I noticed that there is more emphasis on Ty and Darian’s relationship. I loved reading about the romance because it was interesting to see how a woman as independent as Darian find a balance to be in a relationship with a man as protective and possessive as Ty. In SHAEDES OF GRAY, sometimes I felt that Darian pushed Ty away too much and it did nothing but make her feel lonely. She has survived alone for so long so, how does she let go of that independence she grips so tightly to and open herself up to Ty? It’s not always pleasant. They argue and get jealous of others, but I definitely saw some growth in character on Darian’s part. With the way the book ended, I am dying for the next one!

BLOOD BEFORE SUNRISE is a tightly written, edge-of-your-seat read! You do not want to miss out on this series.

Review: When Shadows Call by Amanda Bonilla

 When Shadows Call
(Shaede Assassin #0.5)
by Amanda Bonilla

WHEN SHADOWS CALL is the prequel to the Shaede Assassin series by Amanda Bonilla. If you’re a fan of this series, then this novella is an absolute must-read! In this novella, Bonilla does a fantastic job of bringing insight to Darian’s character before she was Shaede.

 As a human living in the 1900s, Darian’s life seems like the most perfect picture of happiness. However, upon closer inspection, readers catch a glimpse of the darker side of her life where she is the constant punching bag to her highly regarded but abusive husband. For five years, Darian tolerated the beatings her husband, Henry gave her night after night. It is not until one night that Henry brings a guest to their home that he finally snaps and beats Darian to her death.

This man that Henry introduces to Darian is no other than the elusive and mysterious Azriel whom readers know from the series. Bonilla crafts a well-paced and believable relationship between Azriel and Darian. I liked the fact that Darian was a little hesitant in trusting Azriel because, after all, she just met him. However, there is also the undeniably attraction between them that cannot be ignored. Which leads me to my next point....The sexual tension between Darian and Azriel finally overflows and yup, this leads to a smoking hot sex scene that had be breathless for more! Bonilla should definitely be writing more sex scenes like that.

I think part of the reason why the sex scene was so spectacular is because it involves Azriel. There’s his dangerous aura to him that intrigues readers and makes them want to find out more about him. I loved how possessive he was of Darian, but I also loved that he wasn’t quite the refined gentleman people think a person like him should be. Darian explains it well:

“My savior was no gentleman, he had admitted as much. And yet, I admired his unapologetic nature. He did not make excuses for his behavior or pretend to be anything other than what he was. I found his lack of pretense refreshing. “Good night, Azriel,” I whispered as I brushed his hair back from his brow. I couldn’t help but wonder, as I started down at his perfect countenance, if I hadn’t jumped from the frying man straight into the fire".

She may have escaped the dangers from the hands of her husband, but with Azriel, she still plays a dangerous game. The latter part of the novella depicts this nicely.

In the end, WHEN SHADOWS CALLS is a great addition to the Shaede series, giving insight to Darian’s past while making me fall in love with these characters even more. As if that were even possible.

Mind Spill: Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

How's it going up there at the North Pole? So far, it's one of the few places I haven't destroyed in my new series. It hasn't been easy, because Pestilence (the evil Horseman,) would love to send his demonic minions your way (demons love reindeer jerky!)

So anyway, if it's not too much to ask, I'd really love some snow for Christmas. It's December in Wisconsin, and NO SNOW! What's up with that? I'd also like a lifetime supply of mulled wine to go with the snow. Mmm...mulled wine...

If I could get even just the snow, I'll really do my best to keep the apocalypse away from the North Pole. No matter what, you're safe from zombies. They have a tendency to turn into immobile zombiecicles in freezing temperatures. Yay, you!

Thanks for listening, Santa! Merry Christmas!

Love and nibbles,

Larissa Ione

Dear Santa,

It's been a great year for my fam bam, health, friends, work, etc.  It has also been a great book reading, friend gaining and author meeting year for me. I wish for all these things to continue for the next year, please.

Errrr, is that a lot of work? Ok. Ok. For Christmas, I would like a new LV bag or the new Nook Tab, Pretty please. #wishful thinking.

~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~
Dear Santa:
What do you get for the assassin who has everything? If we’re talking flashy throwing knives or daggers, she’s got plenty. Expensive leather holsters for said weaponry? She’s got those too. There’s no use in asking for a fancy new wardrobe, she doesn’t really wear anything that isn’t black, utilitarian, and stretchy (gotta be able to move comfortably in a combat situation). And as for sparkling jewels or precious metals…she doesn’t have any use for those sorts of baubles. In fact, the only jewelry she wears was a gift from me: an ancient ring. And just between you and me, Santa—that’s all she needs.
I don’t need anything for myself this year. I’m too impatient to wait for Christmas to get the things that I want, and I’m not used to asking anyone for anything. But since this letter isn’t for me, I’m going to make an exception. Before I get down to the asking, I better throw a few things out on the table: I doubt that Darian has been on your “Nice” list for a very long time. Now, I know that being an assassin might make you leery of giving her anything at all this year. But as Darian’s employer, let me tell you that she has high moral standards considering her profession. She only takes out the bad guy, and hey, that’s got to count for something, doesn’t it? Aside from her job, she might have earned a spot on your “Naughty” list since she’s pretty good at coming across as emotionless and hard, and she’s fooled the few people who know her into believing that she has the personality of a wet cat. But that’s just an act, Santa. A way to keep people from getting too close. She made herself believe that the only way to survive was to shut her emotions off completely. And it’s worked so far. The first time I laid eyes on her, though, I could see through that cool, detached façade.
She wants to belong. To be loved. To be accepted for who and what she is. She doesn’t want to live in fear of the unknown or to be a slave to her past. She wants to forgive and forget, but no matter how hard she tries, she can’t free herself from the shackles of her past. She wants someone to protect her for a change, to swoop in, save the day, and not have ulterior motives for doing so. I’ve got the protection thing covered. In fact, I’d give my life for hers and whether she wants to admit it yet or not, she needs me. If you can mend a broken heart, Santa, if you can undo all of the wrongs done to her and erase the memories of betrayal that have hardened her heart, could you do me a solid and give that to her? I’m trying my best here, to do it on my own, but she’s a tough nut to crack. I can use all the help I can get.
Sincerely,
Tyler
Dear Santa,
I’ve been a good girl for (most of) the year. The small instances in where I have been less than nice is all because of these girls *jerks thumbs at Angela, Francesca and Suzanne*. In their presence, the Naughty Annie comes out!
Never once have I started collecting book boyfriends until I met them. I have never stored photos of half-naked men on my computer before taking up the hard and sometimes tedious work of posting Hottie of the Week. I also would have never started reading naughty books if it weren’t for these girls.
So, Santa if you could please ignore those times when I was a bad, bad girl, I’d really appreciate it if you sent me something cool for Christmas. It’s not much but.... I’d like a hunky Highlander. In a plaid kilt. With long hair and war braids. He must be at least 6 feet tall. Built like a mountain and hung like a ...*cough*
Thanks, Santa! You’re awesomesauce!
P.S. Don’t forget the Scottish brogue, that’s very important too.
Sincerely,
Annie (UTC)
~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~
Dear Santa,

I've been extra nice this year, regardless of what my hockey record shows. For starters, I taught a lady friend how to fight vampires. It wasn't easy, well, especially for her. But I sure enjoyed showing her different moves. Secondly, I helped my werewolf friend, Ryan, with a serious problem. One nasty werewolf who raped and murdered women is no longer a threat to others. Surely those two deeds alone account for a little extra special gift this year. Don't you think?

For Christmas this year, I want Jessie Garrett, half-demon soul-catcher, dressed in a red see through lace dress. If you can tie her to my bed, that would be nice too, but if she's too much trouble for you to handle, I can manage that task for myself. Be careful of her boyfriend, Drake. The vampire is quick and can be a real pain. No need to worry about how she'll get back home. I will see to it she is returned safely. What I'm asking for might seem out of the norm, but I think you will agree I've earned this gift. Thank you, Santa.

P.S. Don't tell her you're taking her for me. She might resist. You should probably just use your magic to get her to me. If you do this, I'll make sure you and your elf friends continue to live peacefully at the North Pole.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Ward

Dear Santa,

I have been a really, really good girl this year and all I want for Christmas is to wake up and find this under my tree!
And of course I get to play with him for a while! ;)

PS: Make sure you get my girlies everything they asked for, I can vouch for their naughtiness angelic behavior.

Dear Santa,

This year has been difficult, yet one of the best in my entire existence. I met a wonderful woman, Jessie Garrett. She's half-demon, but she has a heart of gold. She has this unique ability to send evil souls to hell. It's amazing to watch her, and every minute I'm with her I'm in total heaven. Yes, I'm in love with her, Santa. Fortunately, she loves me too.

But there's one problem. His name is Jeremy Ward. He's a demon and likes to stir up trouble with Jessie. My request for Christmas is simple. I want you to sprinkle your magic on Jeremy to keep him away from Jessie. Or, find a female demon to keep him occupied so he doesn't bother my angel.

I know this request must seem…out of the ordinary, but I would greatly appreciate it if you can find it in your power to oblige me this one time. Jessie and I are quite happy together. In fact, we're planning to marry. We couldn't be happier. Well, take Jeremy out of the picture and everything will be perfect.

Thank you, Santa.
Warm Wishes,
Drake

Dear Santa

Although I have been led astray by Fran, Annie and Angela, before I met them I thought BDSM was a car insurance company, I have been a very good girl. So good, that I think that I deserve a couple of the men from my harem to come to life. I am thinking maybe Wrath and Curran, oh and maybe Lachlain MacRieve as well, I don't want to be too selfish. Speaking of my harem, I could also do with impenetrable  security system to stop certain ladies *glares at Fran, Annie and Angela* from stealing my men.

Seriously though, send hugs and kisses to the UTC girls and all my girlies on Goodreads, love them all!

Merry Christmas

Suz (UTC)

p.s. Maybe I can also have Simon Hunt too? I have serious needs Santa!

~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~
Dear Santa,
This year has been very exciting. I sent more evil souls to hell than I ever have before. Sadly, I lost my dear friend and guardian, Sean. But I met a wonderful man, a vampire, and we're in love. Life couldn't be better.
I have one request for Christmas, and it's not for me. It's for my best friend, Dani. She's staying with me and she could really use a man in her life. I know of the perfect one, and his name is Alan Vandett. He's an Alpha werewolf, but I think she can handle him. If you could see it in your heart to bring these two together, I'd really appreciate it. Start them off with a date and a movie, or dancing. She's had a difficult year and could really use a boost. The two have met already and I've seen a curious spark in both of them. So I think they just need a little push to bring them closer together. Can you help them out, Santa? Please?
Thank you so much.
 ~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~

Dear Santa,

I’ve been such a good girl this year! I have lied, stolen, maimed and murdered! I have caused misery and pain. I have torn lives apart. I have spent countless hours plotting to and torturing characters, twisting their little lives into unrecognizable uglies. Then, like the diligent romance author I am, I have treated the good guys to a spectacular HEA and incinerated the bad guys. It’s hard work, but someone’s got to do it, and I’m proud to say I’ve been unrelenting and successful. You should be so proud!

For Christmas I would like:
A new muse. Don’t tell her I said so, but mine is just not pulling her weight. I need a fast-thinker who can challenge me to shoot forward. The whole dragging the ass thing isn’t working for me. At all.
More hours in each day. Not a lot of hours, I don’t want to be greedy. Just a few would be great.
Need for less sleep. Let me clarify—this would be in addition to, not in lieu of, the item above.
Dream catcher. A real one that retains the ideas my subconscious delivers in my dreams instead of allows them to dissipate in the daylight.
A housekeeper. Please, please…pretty please?
An assistant. Please, please…pretty please with a sugar on top?
And last but not least…I’d be super, super happy if my new proposal with witches and demon spirits sold, cause I really, really want to write the dark, gritty, fun, sexy, sexy series.

You be careful tootling around those roofs this year. Don’t get stuck in any chimneys. And don’t you dare let me catch you peeping in any bedrooms again!

Merry Christmas!

Joan Swan
P.S. I left an ARC of FEVER for you by the chocolate milk and macadamia, chocolate chip cookies I made from scratch, but don’t read and fly. And I put a to-go bag together for you, too…brownies, truffles, candies…you’ve got a long flight. (You may infer a bribe if you like.)

~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~**~~~~~
Dear Santa —
I'm not going to ask for anything for myself this year. There really isn't any thing I need.
But the people who live in my head have some things on their wishlists...
Kara wants a vacation alone with her hunky husband.
Reece wants a gift membership to the local gun range.
Tessa wants a spa day to use after her son is born.
Julian can't think of anything he wants if you put him on the spot, but deep down I know he wants season tickets to the Colorado Rockies.
Sophie would secretly love it if her brother surprised her by coming to Denver for Christmas.
Marc wants a Colt M1911 Rail Gun in .45 ACP with the extended beaver tail, rosewood grips and stainless steel finish.
Kat wants a double stroller.
Gabe wants a set of the new Armada JJ skis so he can rip the pow days.
Natalie wants a new computer, a big dry erase board for plotting novels (she's taken up writing), and a trip to an island with palm trees and umbrella drinks.
Zach just wants to be with Natalie, so maybe the vacation could be for both of them.
Back in 1760, Iain, Morgan and Connor need a new blade for their plough, lumber for a new house — it's getting a mite crowded with all of them in the cabin — as well as a second milk cow and a bull to breed both of the their cows.
Annie would like sturdy cotton cloth to make clothes for Iain Cameron and Mara and soft wool to knit a sweater for Iain. But those are for others, so please surprise her a silk shift and some new pots and pans.
Amalie would like cloth to make clothing for her growing twins, too, as well as cloth to sew Morgan some new shirts. Please bring her those things, but surprise her with parchment and ink so that she can write to her one-time ward, Bourlemaque.
Sarah needs everything a woman needs to start a household of her own — pots, pans, spoons, knives, dishes, cups, linens for the beds. Pack your sleigh full, Santa.
And little Iain Cameron, Mara, Lachlan and Connor Joseph — bring them toys and clothes their mothers don't have to stitch.
Thanks, Santa, you're the best.
P.S. If you want to bring something to this house, I would never say no to lots of fresh inspiration or a trip onto the New York Times bestseller list.
One of my favorite characters in the Shaede Assassin world is Levi. Seattle’s resident bartender is as human as they come, but there’s nothing mundane about Levi. He’s chocked full of supernatural knowledge and he’s got connections that go way beyond the average bartender. Levi’s tip jar is always full thanks to his all-American good looks, and preppy, college-boy wardrobe. But there’s more to Levi than just a gorgeous face and a flirty smile. He’s connected, and he knows about all of the heavy-hitters in the supernatural world.
Amanda: *Blushes at Levi’s million-watt, flirty smile* Hey Levi, thanks for letting me interview you today! Out of everyone in Seattle, you seem to be the guy to talk to.
Levi: No problem. I don’t mind talking, but I don’t work for free.
Amanda: Um, yeah. You got my check…right?
Levi: *winks* We’re good.
Amanda: How does a cute preppy guy like you end up in this line of work, anyway? Not the bartending... I mean, how did you become a walking, talking supernatural encyclopedia?
Levi: The cool thing about working at a bar is that I have plenty of opportunities to observe people when they might not realize anyone is watching. If you pay close attention, you’ll see some crazy shit after a while. Bartenders don’t just serve drinks, you know. Alcohol has a way of loosening lips. And when I’m behind the bar, people tend to open up. After a while, you get a pretty good bead on who’s human, and who might be “other”. Folks usually tell me when they’re looking for something: be it information or a person, place, thing… Whatever it is, I usually know how to get it. I like to think of what I do as a community service. The only difference is, I’m not running a charity. Information comes with a price.
Amanda: So that’s it? You have the inside track on the supernatural population of Seattle just because you’re a good listener?
Levi: Well, that, and I dated a smokin’ hot witch who was pretty high up in one of the local covens for a few years. I learned a lot about the supernatural from her.
Amanda: I always sort of figured you worked for some super-secret organization with all of the inside knowledge you have.
Levi: *grins*
Amanda: Okaaay… Moving on. What did you think of Darian the first time you met her?
Levi: Darian’s cool. She pays good, too. Took her a while to open up, though. She started coming in to The Pit about five years ago. The same time she started hanging with Tyler. She keeps to herself, mostly. It took a year or two before she’d even make eye contact with me. Sort of cracked me up, you know. She’d slink around, acting all inconspicuous. She didn’t think anyone could tell there was something just a little off with her. But I pay attention. Inconspicuous sort of sticks out in a bar. Shaedes have this look… I don’t know how to describe it. It’s almost like shadows cling to them when they walk by. Magnetic. I used to think she was a total ice queen, but she’s thawing out. Darian’s not shy, she just doesn’t trust anybody. She gives off this “back-off” vibe. Helps to keep people at arm’s length.
Amanda: Wow. Sounds like you know a lot about Darian.
Levi: Nah. Like I said, I’m just really observant.
Amanda: You work for Tyler, don’t you? Seriously, you have to work for someone in “the know”.
Levi: Next question.
Amanda: *sighs* All right, what can you tell us about Seattle’s supernatural community?
Levi: To be honest, there wasn’t much of one until about six months ago. When the Shaede nation uprooted and made Seattle their home base, the population of supernaturals in the area exploded. But supes have a tendency to do that. They get bored where they are after a hundred or so years and put down roots somewhere new. Seattle has quite an assortment: Shaedes, Lyhtans, Sylphs, Fae of all kinds, Sidhe, a few demons, shifters… Pretty much anything you can think up. They’re good at keeping themselves hidden, though. So unless you’re really looking, you won’t even notice them.
Amanda: Speaking of Lyhtans, they freak me out. Don’t you ever worry about running across one?
Levi: Lyhtans are nasty. I definitely wouldn’t want to tangle with one. They use the venom in their teeth to turn their prey’s insides into mush and then they just slurp it out. My advice: if you’re walking around the city after dark, try to stay out in the open and avoid any dark alleys.
Amanda: What about during the day?
Levi: Lyhtans can make themselves invisible in sunlight. Best to be on guard all the time.
Amanda: Well, you’ve certainly given me a lot to think about. Like, wearing a suit of armor everywhere I go to ward off Lyhtan bites. And since I suspect I’ve asked about as many questions as I could afford answers to, I’ll end with one last question: Do you have any idea what’s in store for Darian in the future?
Levi: I can’t say for sure. There’s been talk…and since I keep my ear to the ground, I do know that she’s usually in way over her head. The thing about Darian is that she thinks she’s hiding out below the radar, but I don’t think she realizes that there’s always someone who’s paying attention. I like her, but Darian is too big for her britches. She’s going to have to learn how to ask for help. If she doesn’t, I have a feeling all hell’s gonna break loose.
Amanda: Thanks for stopping by and answering my questions, Levi. Hope to see you around.
Levi: You’ll see me around. As long as the supes stay in Seattle, I’ll be making a buck.
Amanda: Gotta keep your closet stocked with Abercrombie and Fitch, huh?
Levi: *smiles* You know it.
ARC Review: Shaedes of Gray by Amanda Bonilla
Shaedes of Gray
by Amanda Bonilla
(Shaede Assassin # 1)
Sometimes when you don't have expectations you are pleasantly surprised.  Isn't that always a treat?  This book is very unique and the world building is amazing!  It didn't suffer from first-book-in-series syndrome, which is already a great thing in itself.
So the shaede can basically melt into the shadows at night, perfect talent to have for an assassin, and a talent that Darian has used for a long time to her benefit in her career.  She can pretty much kill anyone but when her, would you call him boss?, Tyler gives her an assignment everything she's believed up to now will be questioned.
See she's hired to kill another shaede.  Up until now she thought she was the only one of her kind because that's what her maker wanted her to believe.  But as it turns out there's a lot more than just that she didn't know and it's time for her to play her role in the supernatural world.
I know for some people Darian was not the most likeable heroine but I actually liked her!  Poor girl had gone through quite a rough childhood and marriage before Azriel finds her and turns her into a shaede.  For years all she knew was him and then he disappears.  And she's had to live with the knowledge that the man she loved was dead and that she was truly alone in the world with no one of her kind around.  So I felt her pain.  I thought she had the right amount of kick ass mixed in with vulnerability.  And to me she didn't come across as cocky, which is hard to manage just right.
Then there's Tyler.  Intriguing and sexy.  She's always thought he was her boss, her human boss.  But there's so much more to him and its time for him to show her they can be good together.  If it takes another shaede coming in and trying to swoop on his girl for him to come out of the supernatural closet, then that's fine with me.  I really liked Tyler, sneaky as he was.  And speaking of sneaky people, I actually liked the Shaede King, Xander, as well.  What a collection of great characters!
So as this story is basically in a big part Darian discovering the truth about the supernatural world while battling a big baddie I thought it was a great setup for the series while still delivering a very interesting story.  I really can't wait to see where things will go from here!
