Hi Lisa! Welcome to Under the Covers! We are huge fans of yours and are excited to have you here today! Thanks for being our Author of the Month!

Thank you so much, I'm delighted to visit.

Dream Lake is the next book in your series and this is Alex's book. From what we have seen of him in the series so far, Alex has been tormented by his past. He is a borderline alcoholic and is in a difficult spot at the moment. What can readers expect to see from him in this upcoming release?

It's my favorite kind of story to write--the redemption of a tortured hero. I really enjoy the challenge of exploring how a cynical and bitter man can possibly be turned into a loving, caring hero. One of the themes in the book is that occasionally you have to believe in something that doesn't seem possible. For Alex, love is one of those impossible things. He refuses to love or be loved by anyone, because he is certain that it will inevitably lead to pain and ruin. Ironically, part of Alex's redemption is brought about by an unlikely friendship with a ghost--also something pretty tough to believe in. But ultimately the most significant relationship in the book is between Alex and Zoe, who is a chef and co-owner of an inn at Friday Harbor. She is gentle, compassionate and idealistic, and she's the last person you would expect to break through Alex's defenses.

Alex is haunted not only by his past, but also a ghost of a World War 2 fighter pilot. This sounds very interesting! How did the idea of this come about?

It was tremendous fun to research and create the character of a World War 2 pilot. I listened to so many sad, romantic songs of that era, and I played Johnny Cash's cover of "We'll Meet Again" constantly. The insight I had was that instead of the ghost being someone who would guide or advise Alex, he doesn't remember who he is, or why he is there. So his dilemma parallels Alex's, in that they are both men who are not fully realized--each needs to figure out who he is supposed to become, and what is really important to him, before it's too late. I knew that I wanted Alex and Zoe to have some kind of connection with the ghost's past, and this happened in a way that I think was romantic and touching. I cried a few times while writing the book, especially the end, and that never happens to me.

You have mentioned that in Crystal Cove the heroine will have some Wiccan or witch talents and skills. Did you have to do a lot of research for this? What was the most interesting thing you learned in your research?

Yes, I'm not going "full Harry Potter," but the heroine, Justine, has some innate magical abilities. I've done a lot of research so far and I'm continuing as I write the book. One of the things I learned has become part of the plot: in Irish mythology, there is a kind of spell, or curse, called a geis. (Pronounced like "guest" only with a "sh" instead of a t at the end.) Justine discovers that a geis was placed on her as an infant, so that she can never fall in love. The reason why this was done to her, and how she breaks the geis, is a big part of the story. And of course there is a mysterious and handsome hero, named Jason Black.

You have incorporated some magical elements into the Friday Harbor series. Why have you decided to pursue this new avenue and what do you think it adds to the Friday Harbor series in general?
One of the most important things for a writer is to stay fresh and try new things, so you don't end up turning out cookie-cutter plots and characters. So when I was vacationing in Friday Harbor and pondering various plots, the island's amazing ocean views and scenery looked so mystical that I decided to just go for it and add some magical elements to the books. I think it adds an element of lyricism to the writing, and there are wonderful opportunities for metaphor with magic . . . for example, Alex is not only haunted by his past, he's literally haunted as well. And Justine's fears and disappointments in love are represented as a spell that has to be broken.

A question about your Travises series... Will Joe Travis ever get a book? (Please say yes!)

I am hopeful, and there is a very strong chance that Joe will get a book. First I'll have to make certain the plot is right, and then my editor will help me figure out if the whole thing is a good idea, and how and when it would be published, etc.

What does a typical writing day look like for you?
For years I used to get up at 4AM so I could write before it was time to take the children to school, but I just can't do that anymore! So I have a little rented office in a historic newspaper building in town, and I try to keep to a 9 to 5 schedule. I exercise two days a week before writing, and I'm trying to add one more day, but it's not easy to motivate myself to work out (I'm a slug by nature). I usually try to write four or five good pages per day, and I start out each day by editing the previous day's work. By the time the manuscript is finished, I've combed through it about a zillion times. I can sit for an hour working with one paragraph, or even one sentence, and then when I see how much time has gone by, I'm tempted to bash my head on the keyboard.

Which book was the easiest to write? Which would you say was the most difficult?
Without a doubt, Devil In Winter was the easiest . . . it poured out in a period of ten weeks. A "gift book" . . . the characters were fully formed in my head from the very beginning. I think a lot of it had to do with the chemistry between Sebastian and Evie--they were such an unlikely pair, but whenever they were together, it just worked beautifully. (Another relatively "easy" book was Seduce Me at Sunrise.) One of the most difficult was Smooth Talking Stranger. Although I liked the characters of Jack and Ella individually, it was a struggle at times to write their scenes, and I worried constantly that they didn't have enough chemistry. After I finished the novel and read the galleys later, I was relieved to see that the spark between them was there, it was just that I'd been too close to the book to see it.

You have written some of my favorite heroes ever -Derek Craven, Kev Merripen, Jack Travis, Sebastian St. Vincent. I could go on and on. What quality do you think all heroes should have?
Oh, thank you so much! I think a hero should be strong but never abusive, and once he meets the heroine, she is the only woman in the world for him. And there's something else . . . it's hard to put precisely into words, but I think so many great romance heroes in general have this quality of darkness or danger or a sort of edgy masculinity, so that when a hero finally connects emotionally with the heroine and shows his tender side, it's incredibly satisfying. In fact, there's a quote from Dream Lake in which Zoe tries to describe that longing for connection:

"Sometimes you meet a really nice guy, but no matter how you try, you can't seem to make yourself want him. But that's not nearly as bad as when you meet the wrong guy, and you can't make yourself not want him. You feel hollow inside, just waiting and wishing and dreaming. You feel like every moment is leading to something so amazing that there's no name for it, and if you could just get there with him, it would be such a . . . relief. It would be all you'd ever need."

Are you planning on writing any more historical romance books in the future?
I'm sure I will, although I don't have any planned yet.

What book are you enjoying at the moment? Care to share some recommendations?
Imagine by Jonah Lehrer (a fabulous non-fiction book about creativity) Heartache Falls by Emily March (a dear friend and terrific author) and of course I've preordered The Great Escape by Susan Elizabeth Phillips who is wonderful in every way.

If you only had $20 in your purse, what items would you purchase with it?
Two matinee movie tickets, one for me and one for my daughter.

Thanks so much for answering our questions!
Thank you, this has been lots of fun!

St. Martins Press is graciously giving away FIVE copies of DREAM LAKE to US residents.

Dream Lake takes readers once again to the exquisite setting of Friday Harbor, and tells the story of Zoӫ Hoffman, an innkeeper who has all but given up on love. She’s a gentle, romantic soul, but has been so hurt in the past that she dare not trust her heart with anyone. Especially not Alex Nolan. Alex is the most haunted of all the Nolan brothers.

He drinks to keep his demons at bay and not only has he given up on love, he has never, ever believed in it. Zoӫ and Alex are oil and water, fire and ice, sunshine and shadow.

But sometimes, it takes only a glimmer of light to chase away the dark. Dream Lake is classic Lisa Kleypas: romantic, powerful, emotional, and magical.

Author Override: Cherise Sinclair

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

Today our resident redhead, Suzanne shares an interview she did with Master Sam and Master Cullen of Cherise Sinclair's Master of the Shadowland series. It seems like these guys are too good to be true. Check out what went down!

CHERISE SINCLAIR

*Note: This interview was conducted a few years ago, before Lean On Me was written

Sam grinned as a new woman entered the main room of the Shadowlands and froze. New members invariably stopped about two steps in from the door. What had caught his attention when he first came here? The enticing sounds of pain? Maybe the scent of sweat and leather with an undertone of sex? Or simply the sight of submissives restrained on crosses, on spanking benches, and from chains and ropes. That had been many years ago, and the Shadowlands hadn’t been his first BDSM club.

It was probably the best though.

To his left, a woman being caned by her mistress screamed, her agony and orgasm mingling together in a fine broth. Nice.

At the door, the new girl worked up her courage and approached the bar where Sam sat. He sipped his water—some of Z’s fancy shit with bubbles—and considered her. Pretty, but younger than he preferred. However, the big blue eyes were gorgeous as was the red hair, long enough to wrap around his hand. Her fair, fair skin would mark up nicely. Tempting. His usual submissives had kept him busy enough that he hadn’t played with anyone new in a while, but they gone to attend a convention.

“Hi there,” the redhead said. Her Britsh accent was a surprise, her forwardness even more so. “Z sent me. I’m looking for Master Sam.”

“You found him, girl.” He set his drink down and waited, letting the weight of silence flatten her slightly. Her weight shifted as her assurance diminished.

He gave her a long appraisal. She’d gone for the secretary look with a thin white blouse that begged to be ripped off…or shredded. He had a whip he preferred for that…although a knife was often more fun. The tight black skirt wouldn’t cushion a blow at all, and her high heeled sandals had buckles from the toes to above her ankles. The security guard must have liked them or she’d have been barefoot.

“What’s up, Sam?” Cullen leaned an arm on the bartop and surveyed the chit. “You two going to play?”

When the color rolled into her cheeks, Sam chuckled. “She said she was looking for me, but I don’t think she meant to play.” Testing, he wrapped his hand around her upper arm and watched her color deepen. Very, very aware of him. But was she up to his speed? His needs? He closed his fingers more tightly, squeezing her soft flesh, watching her lips part and her eyes dilate as the pain hit her. He could almost smell the need radiating off her. “Then again, we might do some talking.”

Her eyes held a touch of anxiety, and he released her, rubbing the dents from her skin. “Easy, girl. Nothing happens to you without your consent. Now tell us why you’re here.”

He smiled at the fearful, aroused way she watched him.

Cullen gave him an amused glance and took her hand. “Ignore the sadist, love, and tell me what’s bothering you.”

“I’m Suzanne with Under The Covers blog, and I-I’m here to do an interview.”

Hell. That wasn’t what he considered a good beginning to a play session.

Cullen groaned. “Another one? Who did Z single out this time?”

Her gaze turned to Sam. He could imagine her big eyes as she begged, how tears would roll down her round cheeks. But a damn interview? She looked back at Cullen. “If you’re Cullen, then Z said you were supposed to help.”

 “Figures,” Cullen muttered.

“Well.” Suzanne straightened. Having drawn the lines, she obviously felt more in control. “First question. What’s the sexiest part of a woman?”

Cullen blinked.

Sam decided the bloggers must suck down a couple pitchers of margaritas when deciding on interview questions. But this topic had possibilities. “Her brain.”

WHAT KIND OF answer is that? Suzanne froze as the silver-haired Dom leaned forward. His callused hand curled around her jaw in a ruthless grip. When he pinned her with ice blue eyes, she shivered at the dark promise in them.

“It all starts in the brain, girl,” he said, his rough voice sandpapering over her skin. “If I hauled off and slapped you, that wouldn’t be fun at all, would it?”

"N-no." He wouldn't, would he?

He leaned toward her, his hard face taking up her entire field of vision. “But, what if I tell you that I’m going to strip you of your clothes and then strip you of your defenses. That I intend to tie you to a post and…hurt you?”

All the air was gone from the room and what was left had turned the temperature of a sauna. She couldn’t look away from his pale eyes.

He released her, leaned back against the bar stool, and his lips curved slightly. “The brain is sexy, girl. Once I have your mind, I can do…anything…”

Do it. Do it. Her legs weren’t buckling, and she shakily slid onto a bar stool. Don’t talk to him. Don’t look at him. She turned to Cullen instead, realizing he wore the gold armband indicating he was a Master of the Shadowlands. Like Master Sam was. Interview. This is for work. “What is one essential thing a Dom should have? A must-have item.”

“Control,” said Master Sam at the same time Cullen said, “An imagination.”

“But…” They were deliberately screwing up her interview. “I meant like equipment. Or toys. Or a flogger or something.”

Cullen’s laugh was loud and full-throated; Sam’s chuckle like the grinding of a cement truck. “Now, see, a Dom can have some favorite toys and that’s all he plays with,” Cullen said. “I enjoy a variety, and no matter what I have, whether it’s a toybag full or things I grab from the bar"—he took a clamp off of a potato chip bag—"it’s what I do with them that’s the fun part.” His gaze slowly traveled down her body, and she realized her nipples tingled, almost begging for that horrible looking clamp. Dammit, I should have worn a bra. He gave her a slow smile that was almost as terrifying as Master Sam's.

“Well. Okay.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “How about your favorite safeword?”

Master Sam smiled at her. “Ow is always a fine word to hear—but not for a safeword. I prefer whatever a submissive can remember. Sometimes I have her use her name—when all else goes, she might remember that. Might.”

When all else goes? Every word he said was a low threat, and her body craved him, craved whatever he wanted to do to it. And how am I ever going to write this up as an interview? Her readers would run. He was a sadist; oh, he really, really was. Every time she shivered, she saw him drink it in.

Talk to Cullen. He was much safer. “Master Cullen, what’s your favorite toy?”

The man was huge, muscular, powerful, and he gave her a look as compelling as a hard yank. “A woman. Far better than a stuffed bear in bed, much more fun to play with.”

Oh, hell, he wasn’t any better than Master Sam. She looked back at the older Dom—as deadly as Cullen was powerful. “What is it about the lifestyle you find the most appealing. Rewarding?”

Master Sam smiled slowly. He took her hands and opened them, palms up. Her skin heated from the roughness of his fingers. “Rewarding is when a submissive opens her mind and defenses, when she offers her trust. When I can reach down and pick up the reins…” He brushed her palms, curling his fingers around an imaginary rope, and she felt as if he pulled her toward him. “When she trusts me to take what I need—and to give her what she needs. Even if what we both want will make her cry.”

Cry? The word reverated through her, melting her insides, setting up a pulse of fear. Of need.

As she stared up at him, he fisted the front of her shirt and lifted her to her feet. “Do you want to use Suzanne as your safeword?”

Pick your poison - Cherise's cocktail recipe

Blurb for My Liege of Dark Haven:

Threatened by university cutbacks, Professor Abigail Bern’s only hope is to publish a provocative research paper--soon. Planning to covertly observe behavior in the notorious Dark Haven BDSM club, she takes a receptionist job. When the owner calls upon her to assist in a demonstration, she’s appalled. Then fascinated. Under the unyielding hands of the master known as my Liege, she discovers a need to be more than an observer.
His late wife had been the center of his life, and Xavier Leduc wants no other. But when his new receptionist does her utmost to keep an emotional distance from him, he’s intrigued and digs deeper. She’s adorable. Intriguingly intelligent, beautifully submissive, sweetly vulnerable. He soon realizes her defenses are keeping her on the fringe of her sexuality--and her life. As he draws her into fuller participation, she unconsciously does the same for him. She begins to fill his world.
Ever since the night she met my Liege Xavier, Abby has questioned everything she believes about herself. She’s falling for the stern owner of Dark Haven and thinks he’s beginning to care for her...until the day he learns why she’s in his club.

Non-edited excerpt for My Liege of Dark Haven
Release date: August 28th, 2012 from Loose Id

"Abby, since we've not played together before, you tell me if something is getting to be too much," Master Xavier said.

It's already too much. Abby looked over her shoulder at the owner of the club. White dress shirt, black silk vest, black jeans, black boots. Definitely in the tall, dark, and handsome category, only the words seemed insipid compared to the reality. The wide muscular shoulders turned tall into dangerous. His skin held the darkness of Native American ancestry, and the long black braid down his back was a definite statement. Very handsome, with European chiseled features that went well into hard-edged.

And scary. But she couldn't back out. She doubted the man had a benevolent bone in his body. Quite obviously if she didn't "assist," she'd be out the door. She sure hadn't thought her participant observations would include real participation. A shiver ran through her.

He glanced up, and the sun lines at the corners of his eyes crinkled with amusement. "Easy, Abby. The club safe word is red and if you use it, play stops immediately. Say it loudly, and a dungeon monitor will show up to make sure you're all right." Holding her arm firmly, he wrapped what looked like wide packing tape around her right wrist a couple of times, and she realized the material wasn't sticky.

"Red. Got it."

"Abby," he said. "I daresay you know how to address a Dominant in this setting, especially the one working with you."

The uninflected reprimand made her flush as if she'd been caught cheating off someone's test paper. "Yes, my liege."

He didn't rant but nodded acceptance.

Despite her relief he hadn't lost his temper, anxiety thrummed in her ears as he pulled her other arm behind her back and secured both wrists together. She closed her eyes and tried to pretend nothing was happening. She'd never been able to let Nathan put her in handcuffs. Why in the world was she allowing this stranger to restrain her arms?

But she needed this place for her fieldwork. Needed to keep her job. Publish or perish. If she ever met the academic who'd invented that phrase, she'd shove his papers down his throat until he choked.

 "Abby."

She opened her eyes. Xavier stood in front of her, looking down. Why did he have to be so tall? His warm hands massaged her bare shoulders. "Any strain in your joints?"

 "No, sir."

He studied her silently.

She shifted her weight, trying not to think about her lack of mobility. If she didn't move, she wouldn't know--much like closing her eyes during gory movie scenes.

"Pull on the tape, Abby. How does it feel?" Her arms jerked involuntarily, and just like that she knew she was restrained. Couldn't defend herself. That her body was available to the impassive-faced Master. Alternating waves of heat and cold rushed over her as if she stood in front of a rotating fan. She pulled harder, and panic squeezed her throat.

"Easy, pet." He cupped her chin with one firm hand. His fingers curled around her arm, creating a warm place on her skin. His movements showed how easily he could touch her…yet the contact was comforting. Settling. "Eyes on me."

Panting she looked up and into eyes the color of darkness, but the specks of golden-brown made them warm, not cold.

"Good girl." He stroked his thumb along her jawline. "You know you can't escape, but I'm not going to do anything you won't enjoy. We're here in a public place, and you have a safe word that will summon every monitor in the dungeon. Now slow your breathing down before you hyperventilate."

Oops. His gaze never left hers as she pulled in a measured breath and let it out.

"Better. Another." His grip on her upper arm was unyielding, but not painful. A man's hand.

Why did his touch seem different from Nathan's? Why didn't she get that horrible dread?

"Little fluff, I want you to remember how you're breathing now. When I tighten a clamp, it will hurt for a few seconds. I want you to inhale through the pain like you did with your fear."

"Pain? But--"

 "Do you get flu shots?"

"Yes." When his eyebrows pulled together, she added a hasty, "My liege."

"This is the same level of pain, although people rarely get turned on by vaccinations. Whereas nipple clamps…" A crease appeared and disappeared in his cheek.

She nodded to say she could handle that much pain. But could she handle these disconcerting flares of heat? Her nipples actually tingled as if anticipating the touch of those powerful fingers.

Was this the kind of thing Nathan had wanted to do with her? Guilt pressed on her chest. Considering he had dumped her, she shouldn't feel as if she were betraying him. But she did. And she'd let a complete stranger restrain her. Alice had fallen down a hole into Wonderland; Abby had fallen into quicksand and was sinking fast. What am I doing here?

Xavier hadn't moved, was simply watching her. "What's the matter, Abby?"

 "I don't know you at all. You're talking about…"Nipple clamps. "I don't know you."

"I see." His hand was still curved around her upper arm as he moved closer. With his fingers under her chin, he lifted her face and gave her a light kiss. His lips were firm but velvety. Gentle. How could someone with such a merciless face kiss so sweetly?

When he lifted his head, she whispered, "Why did you do that?"

His aftershave was totally masculine with a hint of the exotic, like a pirate who'd visited India. He stroked his thumb along her jawline, his lips only an inch from hers. "Because I can," he whispered back. Then he smiled. "Because I'm going to be touching you much more intimately in a moment."

Heat roared through her at the thought of his hands…elsewhere.

"Think of this as an introduction. I'm Xavier." He covered her mouth with his, and it wasn't a gentle, sweet kiss any longer. He took her lips, demanding a response. When she pulled at the restraints and gasped, his tongue swept in. She couldn't move, couldn't escape, and…

He stepped back, grasping her arms to keep her steady. Ravished by only a kiss, she stared at him. Her lips felt swollen, and she ran her tongue over them.

A flicker of heat lit his eyes, followed by amusement. "Are we better acquainted now?"

Her voice came out sounding as if he'd strangled her instead of kissing her. "Yes, my liege." If he introduced himself like that at a faculty party, the floor would be littered with swooning academics.

"Very good." With far-too-competent hands, he undid the first hook on her corset. As he worked his way down, his long fingers slid between her full breasts, brushing the insides. Each undone fastening exposed more of her body, and coolness wafted over her damp flesh. When he finished, he set the corset to one side, leaving her bare from the waist up. She bit her lip. Really, this is nothing. In France, beaches were filled with women wearing no tops. Not that she had joined them, but… She took a mental step back. Observe. With a determined breath, she checked out a noisy spanking in the center of the room.

A warm hand cupped her breast.

She jumped, tried to pull away. "What are you doing?" He grasped her arm with his other hand, holding her in place. "Did you think you could get clamps without being touched by the Dom?" Even as he spoke, he stroked her breasts, one then the other. His palm was callused, slightly abrasive. His thumb circled the areola, and her nipple bunched hard enough to create an ache.

She tried to dissociate, to observe the other scene.

"Eyes on me, Abby." The softness of his voice didn't negate the command.

The intensity of his gaze sent a shudder up her spine. He tugged on her nipple, and she inhaled hard at the reverberating sensations--the rush of pleasure at his touch, echoed by another in her groin.

"You have beautiful breasts."

Author Override: Cat Johnson

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

We had a chance to catch up with Cat Johnson and ask her what she does under the covers, here's what she had to say...

RED HOT & TRUE BLUE MILITARY MEN
from Author Cat Johnson

Around the Fourth of July holiday, the entire country tends to think a little more about those in the service, but as a military romance author, that’s pretty much an everyday for me, whether it’s sipping my morning coffee while reading in the Military.com newsletter about the latest changes in weapons or uniforms, or popping on instant messenger to check in with my active duty Army and USMC consultants. Doing so familiarizes me with the lingo, helps with facts and research, and gives me story and plot ideas.

I often wonder what my military guys think when I pop up with random questions out of the blue. But it’s these questions and the answers that I hope give my books authenticity and realism. What do I ask? Nothing top secret. Nothing even that important, but it’s important to me to get it right.

For example, just in the past few days I’ve asked the following questions:

Me: You’re at a sporting event in civilian clothing. The flag comes out. What do you do? Salute? Put your hand over your heart? What?

Marine: Um, what?

Me: The hero in my book is an active duty soldier as well as a bull rider. He’s at a rodeo in civilian clothes. What would he do?

Marine: Ah, he’d take off his hat and stand at attention.

Other random questions from this week were… Can you write on a grenade with a Sharpie? Can I call the forward observer an FO for short? And why do none of the soldiers in the video of an outpost in Afghanistan wear their dog tags? (A military mom/friend of mine actually answered that last question for me. The answer was it’s because the tags jingle too loud and dig into their chests while wearing a pack and body armor.)

So there you go, the riveting life of a military romance author. The result of all this military immersion is my Red, Hot, & Blue series currently releasing with Samhain Publishing in eBook and ten months after erelease in Trade Paperback.

The newest released in the series is the novel-length A FEW GOOD MEN. It was inspired by the actual deployment of one of my Army muses to Ramadi in 2007. I met him when I found his request on a troop support site for books for the MWR library he was setting up. We became pen pals and friends after that. He provided me with invaluable details and I couldn’t have written the book without him.

Check out a little bit from A FEW GOOD MEN  below and don’t forget to comment to enter to win a download of book 1 in the Red, Hot, & Blue series, TREY.

Thanks, all, for stopping by and thank you for Under the Covers for having me!

What's Cat Johnson's drink recipe recommendation?

I invented a bunch of drinks in honor of my cowboy heroes and the Authors After Dark pub crawl on Bourbon Street in New Orleans this August. I'm going to be stationed at the Bourbon Cowboy Bar.

So.... here is my favorite of those Buckin' Good Bourbon drink recipes.

He has met the enemy…but he’s never fought desire like this.

Red, Hot & Blue, Book 7

Deployed in the deadliest place on earth, Army Staff Sergeant John Blake relies on caffeine, adrenaline, years of training and sheer force of will to get through his days. He has no problem with his tank crew passing around a sexy romance novel, but John’s a fighter, not a lover. He’ll pass.

Winding up as the author’s accidental pen pal wasn’t in his plan, but there’s something about her sweet, caring emails that has him looking forward to checking his inbox.

Week after week, Maureen Mullen, aka erotic romance writer Summer Winters, has dated one loser after another in a quest to find the last decent man on earth. Now it seems she’s found him—halfway around the world. When it comes to falling for unavailable men, she’s batting a thousand.

Gradually, the emails between the war-hardened warrior and the writer of passionate prose heat up to the point of keeping them up warm and wanting at night. Soon they’re wondering if it’s possible to build something solid out of cyberspace, or if it’s just an emotional mirage that will dissolve in the heat of reality.

Warning: Contains some steamy phone calls from the war zone and one hell of a sexy first meeting between two strangers who are already in love.

EXCERPT (G)
Ramadi, 2007

Eyes focused downward, Staff Sergeant John Blake set to devouring his chow as single-mindedly as he did everything in life—full speed ahead.

The members of his tank platoon chatted around him. It was hard for John to understand how they got any food in their mouths since some of them never shut up. Their chatter covered wives and girlfriends, kids and sports. Anything and everything.

As a tank commander, John took it all in. It might not look like it to the casual passerby, but he listened. Keeping a lookout for any possible issues was part of being a good leader. John observed and absorbed it all—personal problems at home or friction between the men could distract them and possibly put every one of them in danger.

Make that more danger than they already were in here in hell—or Ramadi— whichever.

He usually didn’t interject his opinion much. Instead, he kept his head down and his ears open as the others droned on.

“Well, I’ll be. Looky here. Jazzy’s reading him some kinda chick book.” John’s tank driver, Hector Morales, made that statement in his usual slow Texas drawl.

“Yeah, and so what?” Jazzy didn’t deny it. “Don’t knock it until you read it, dude. It’s a good story, and let me tell you, the sex scenes are hot.”

Jazzy always was one to march to his own drummer. It figured he wouldn’t give a crap if the other guys ribbed him for reading what Morales had called a chick book. Still, John was intrigued at what had Jazzy, who read only when forced to, interested enough to hold his attention even at chow.

John raised his head, pulling his focus away from the less than appetizing entrée. It was no hardship to be dragged away from potatoes and meat that seemed to be the exact same shade of gray and peas that were a slightly grayish-green color not a whole lot different from the rest.

He noted Jazzy was indeed holding a book in one hand while shoveling food into his mouth with the other. The book cover displayed the well-oiled and equally well-developed pectoral muscles of a bare-chested man and not much else besides a boldly printed title and a name. He squinted and tried to see between Jazzy’s fingers.

“Summer Winters.” John read the author’s name aloud and laughed. “What are the chances that name is real?”

“I can’t say I blame her. You read this, and you’ll understand why she needs a fake name. Otherwise she’d probably end up having male stalkers lined up around the block outside her house.” Jazzy shoved a napkin between the pages to hold his place and put the book down on the table so he could scrape the gray remnants from his plate using both fork and knife. “It’s almost like porn, but with a good story and realistic characters. No pictures though. But it’s still pretty damn good. Now I know why my wife is always attacking me in bed when she’s reading one of these books.”

John nearly groaned. Picturing Jazzy’s steamy-romance-novel-inspired sex life with his wife was too much information for him at any time, but especially at chow.

The porn line, however, had Morales raising an eyebrow as if he was reconsidering his initial opinion of chick books. “Really? Well, I’ll be… But isn’t there a lot of, you know, that mushy love crap?”

Jazzy grinned, flipped through the book and then handed it open to Morales. “Here. Read that page for yourself.”

Morales’s eyes opened wide as he scanned the page until his ears started to turn red. “Holy shit. Well, I’ll be damned. That’s just about as good as you can get. This thing’s enough to make a man want to go and clean his gun, if you know what I mean.”

They all knew what he meant, and that was definitely too much information for John while seated at the dining hall table.

Morales continued to flip through the book. “I’ll tell you what, I might give this thing a go. Let me borrow it when you’re done?” Jazzy grinned. “Sure thing. That’s what it’s for—sharing, not the gun cleaning—although that’ll work too. I was going to put it out on the bookshelf for everybody anyway.”

“Where exactly did you get that thing?” John’s curiosity got the best of him.

He watched Morales, leaned forward with elbows braced on the table and head buried in the book. The man was totally engrossed in what must be another pretty interesting scene.

“My pen pal sent it. She wrote it actually. She’s Summer Winters. I know me a real live author.” Jazzy smiled wide.

Across the table, their tank gunner, Gonzolo Barajas, finally put down the letter he’d been reading from that day’s mail call. “That book’s from the pen pal you met on that military support website?” Jazzy nodded. “Yup. She sends all kinds of stuff. We sure as hell got lucky the day she pulled my name off that list. She’s really nice too…and funny. I crack up when I’m reading some of her emails.”

John nearly choked as the realization sunk in. Those websites were full of two things—Girl Scout troop leaders and little old granny do-gooders. One of them wrote porn under the name Summer Winters? That too was more information than he needed at this point in his life. The image of a gray-haired granny in her rocker, knitting scarves to keep the troops warm, switched to the same woman, only now she sat in front of a computer, eating chocolate bon-bons with gnarled, arthritic fingers and penning sex scenes hot enough to make even Morales blush.

A chill ran down his spine. He shook it off and pushed his plate away. Suddenly he was no longer hungry.

“You want the book after me and Morales are done, sir?” Jazzy asked him.

John’s head flew up when he realized he was being addressed and what exactly Jazzy was asking. “Ah, no. That’s all right. Thanks anyway.”

Jazzy shrugged and grabbed the book back from Morales, who didn’t look like he was giving it up willingly. “And you, Morales, have to wait your turn.”

“Well, hurry the hell up then.” Morales went back to his colorless food as John considered what it meant for the future of the Army that his tankers were fighting over a chick’s paperback romance novel. It surely didn’t bode well.

Interview and Giveaway with Tori St. Claire!

Maidens, if you haven't read Tori St. Claire, you don't know what you're missing out on!  Her books are full of suspense, lots of bad guys, plot driven and oh-so-sexy!  Please help us welcome her to UTC today!

Your books have the perfect blend of eroticism with a great suspenseful story. How did you come up with the idea of writing about the Black Opals and the Russian human trafficking mob?

Thank you! I think there's a few influences on how the idea came to be. First, I'm a product of early James Bond. My father and I would watch his movies over and over, so that's stayed with me. Second, I have always had an infatuation with the names "Natalya" and "Alexei". To use them I had to come up with something Russian. It kind of fit. And I knew that I wanted to work with human trafficking because it was (and is) an issue in today's world, but I don't like to "preach" as an author. So I chose a different aspect and dug through the various Moscovian mafias / brotherhoods to discover which one actually has ties to trafficking and arms. My first spy (Natalya from Stripped) needed to work for someone, and in a way that would allow her to walk the line she does, which led to the covert group, the Black Opals. Developing the rest of the Opals has been amazingly fun!

What kind of research did you have to do to write the series?

The base research was pretty simplistic: What groups in Russia have these ties, where are those ties, and a basic understanding of how trafficking works, with what a source country is and what a destination country is, plus which countries are categorized as what. Russia is, traditionally, a source country. The USA is, traditionally, a destination country. But to make it more workable with the USA being a source country, I had to take a little creative liberty and look at what other countries might want American women. Generally, the countries that are destination countries don't subscribe to finding American women ... appealing. We're too... liberated. Often too Christian. So that led me to Dubai, where weath dominates, and Western Culture is more embraced. Then, the majority of my research related to specifics for each story. For instance, in Lie To Me getting Alexei and Sasha out of Dubai and where I needed them, within the time frame, required research with folks that knew planes and knew the terrain, and knew where jets/birds/planes could, or could not land without immediately causing issues. Initially I had a helicopter, until I realized a helicopter can't carry the gas required to get them out of the Arabic countries. Laugh! Then I called in the big guns -- pilots, and former service men who would likely be flying out "on a dime".

Do you have a favorite scene you've written in the series?

So far, my very favorite scene is the arguement between Sasha and Alexei, in Lie to Me, that leads to a very emotional bonding. His worry for her, his anger at himself, and the gentle way she accepts him, just really warms my heart.

I love the warnings that Samhain books have in their blurbs. If you had to write a warning like that for your series, what would you say?

Um... I'd say that's my publicist's job. LOL!

Let's see... Warning, this book contains explicit sex, graphic language, a heroine with a deadly past and a damaged hero with a tender side to die for.

That's as good as a it gets -- sorry gals :)

If you only had twenty dollars in your purse, what would you buy?

Sale shoes.

You write some steamy sex scenes! Do you ever find yourself looking over your shoulder as you write one out because you know it's "too sexy"? Have you ever had to cut down or remove certain parts of a love scene? If so, can we read the original?

Well, I will take that as a compliment! Thank you again. No, I don't find myself looking over my shoulder. Probably because I write when the house is totally asleep, and my ghosts don't mind. In fact, they get a kick out of it, or so I've been told. I've never cut anything out of a sex scene. With this series, pretty much anything goes. With my other books (Non-erotic), they naturally tame themselves.

Were there any particular writers that influenced your craft or your desire to be a writer?

Steve Berry, Meredith Duran, Karin Harlow, Shayla Black and Jaci Burton to name a few. Johanna Lindsey got me started on this writing thing when I was 13. Blame her.

How do you get yourself in the mood to write?

I'm usually always in the mood, but waiting on my environment to cooperate. When the demidemons go to bed, I grab a fresh cup of warmed-over coffee, let the dogs out for the last time, piddle myself, and then sit down and let whatever has built in my head throughout the day reign.

What's your favorite drink recipe?

My favorite drink... Godiva white chocolate liquor in Folger's Creme Brulee coffee. My second favorite drink is a spicy bloody mary. If I knew how to make one, I'd drink more and that would be my first favorite! So if you have any good recipes, do share!

Thank you so much!!

Thank you very much for having me! It's always so fun over here!

EXCERPT

Sasha rolled over, propped her head up on one elbow. “Who do you work for, Alexei?”

That was certainly the last question he’d ever prepared for. Chancing a glance at her upturned face, he debated how to answer. She’d told him she worked for FSB; she undoubtedly knew he was an American agent—virtually all of Dubai knew. But tell her about the Opals? Let her in?

What the hell. They’d already named themselves in front of her. She knew their director’s name. He stared at the television as he answered, “A special division within the CIA known as the Black Opals. We’re the ones they send when it’s real dicey and they need to delete someone with the press of a button.”

 “Delete?”

More quietly he added, “We don’t exist.”

He crossed opposite ankles and folded his hands behind his head, leaning back against the headboard. Waiting for her to make the association between his vague explanation and the truth of his work. When she did, shock would stop her questions.

Instead, Sasha’s palm fitted over his belly, gentle sweeping motions that rumpled the fabric of his shirt and offered more comfort than Alexei had known could exist. “Isn’t that . . . difficult?” she asked softly.

“Difficult? The missions are never ea—”

“No. Not existing.” That delightful little palm slid higher, caressing the lower part of his chest. “I mean, don’t you ever crave life? The simple things like owning a house and paying someone to rake your leaves.” The heel of her palm worked into his tense muscles. “Like sleeping in on a Saturday and having breakfast in bed.”

More than she could understand. He tensed. She was getting too close, treading too far into murky waters he didn’t want to disturb.

Dropping to an almost inaudible whisper, her voice washed over his body. “Have you ever been in love, Alexei?”

Danger. Combustion imminent. Alexei covered the sudden trip of his heart with a harsh chuckle. “Love’s not an option in my line of work, princess.”

She was silent for a blissful moment, leaving him with the conclusion he’d scared her off. As luck would have things, however, when she did speak, she didn’t traipse around uncomfortable, she plunged in headfirst. “You only call me princess when I’ve hit a nerve. So tell me, Agent Nikanova, are you afraid of the fall, or afraid of the loss?”

AUTHOR INFO

National Bestselling author Tori St. Claire grew up writing. Hobby quickly turned into passion, and when she discovered the world of romance as a teen, poems and short stories gave way to full length novels with sexy heroes and heroines waiting to be swept off their feet. She wrote her first romance novel at seventeen. While that manuscript gathered dust-bunnies beneath the bed, she went on to establish herself as a contemporary, historical, and paranormal author under the pen name, Claire Ashgrove. Her writing, however, skirted a fine line between hot and steamy, and motivated by authors she admired, she pushed her boundaries and made the leap into erotica, using the darker side of human nature and on-the-edge suspense to drive grittier, sexier, stories. Her erotic romantic suspense novels are searingly sensual experiences that unite passion with true emotion, and the all-consuming tie that binds -- love.

Samhain Nights: MOIRA ROGERS

Moira Rogers

It's the last day of Samhain Nights, but don't be sad! We've got the awesome writing team, Moira Rogers here with us today! We got a chance to ask them some questions so here's how that went down!

You're a writing duo and some readers don't even know this fact because the writing is so smooth in your books. How do you go about working together? Do each of you have your own tasks?

Donna: Thanks so much! With regards to writing, Bree and I don't trade off chapters or anything like that. We split up the characters at the outset of plotting--"okay, this hero's mine, the heroine's yours, now let's take a look at secondaries." That way, each of us gets to handle the development of a character, start to finish. After that, we send manuscripts back and forth constantly, adding a sentence or a paragraph each time.

Bree: After the book is done is where we divide up tasks. Donna handles the manuscript formatting, polishing and editing. I do the administrative work and handle promotion, including making our graphics and promotional materials and managing our website.

What would you say is the best part of working together as a team? What is the worst aspect?

Donna: The best thing is definitely that being a working writer isn't lonely for us the way it is for many. There's always someone who knows what I'm going through! And the worst part? When our vision of something doesn't exactly line up. Then it's compromise time.

Bree: Yes. The best part is that I always have someone to be excited with when things are going well. The worst part is that I always have someone to be depressed with when things are going poorly. I mean, sometimes that can be good...but sometimes twice the misery is just...twice the misery. ;)

Can you please describe what a brainstorming session between you two would look like?

Donna: Haha, hours of phone chatter or IMs with tons of "what if...". Interspersed with lots of Jeremy Renner pictures.

Bree: Yes. We talk on the phone a lot. I think, during a school month, we might spend three or four hours on the phone every day. At least. We talk about characters, their pasts, their motivations, their arcs and all the evil things we can do to to them.

What Moira Rogers book are you most proud of and please tell us why this book and/or series has your heart?

Donna: I think I'm definitely proud of all of our series for different reasons. I love Southern Arcana because the characters feel so real to me. I've "known" them for years, and seeing them struggle and triumph is so satisfying. I love the Bloodhounds because they're filthy and heroic and their world is kind of insane and cracky.

Bree: I love Hammer Down. It's probably our most obscure book, and a bit unconventional as to genre, but I loved the complicated world we created and the story we told. We worked hard on that book and I'm really proud of it.

If we were unforgivably rude and pulled at random five things from your hand bag, what would we find?

Donna: My wallet, Advil, a signing pen, my business card holder, and some old movie tickets.

Bree: Would you believe I don't have a hand bag? I throw my wallet & keys into a Samhain Publishing tote bag if I have to go somewhere. True story. (But when I used to carry a backpack around, it would have books, Advil, books, my wallet and more books. Now I guess it'd just have my kindle. *g*)

You have a couple of releases coming up, ARCHER'S LADY in July and IMPULSE in September. What can readers expect from these?

Bree: ARCHER'S LADY, like all the Bloodhound books, is a little shorter, a lot dirtier, and full of action, adventure, mad scientists, explosions and vampires. IMPULSE is a little longer, and full of paranormal politics alongside the supernatural loving. But both have happy endings. :)

What is your favorite thing about being a Samhain author?

Bree: The freedom to decide what I want to write without worrying that a good story will be turned away because it's quirky or a little outside what's popular.

Donna: The freedom, definitely. The staff. And my editor!

It's a warm summer's night and you are free to do anything you want! What would you do and who would you spend it with?

Bree: Read a good book or snuggle with my hubby.

Donna: That's a nice time to hit up an outdoor concert or head over to Sloss Furnace for a ghost walk!

Moira Rogers is graciously giving away a copy of Wilder's Mate in ebook.

Wilder Harding is a bloodhound, created by the Guild to hunt down and kill vampires on America's frontier. His enhanced abilities come with a high price: on the full moon, he becomes capable of savagery beyond telling, while the new moon brings a sexual hunger that borders on madness.

Rescuing a weapons inventor from undead kidnappers is just another assignment, though one with an added complication--keeping his hands off the man's pretty young apprentice, who insists on tagging along.

At odds with polite society, Satira's only constant has been the aging weapons inventor who treats her like a daughter. She isn't going to trust Wilder with Nathaniel's life, not when the Guild might decide the old man isn't worth saving. Besides, if there's one thing she's learned, it's that brains are more important than brawn.

As the search stretches far longer than Wilder planned, he finds himself fighting against time. If Satira is still at his side when the new moon comes, nothing will stop him from claiming her. Worse, she seems all too willing. If their passion unlocks the beast inside, no one will be safe. Not even the man they're fighting to save.

Warning: This book contains a crude, gun-slinging, vampire-hunting hero who howls at the full moon and a smart, stubborn heroine who invents mad-scientist weapons. Also included: wild frontier adventures, brothels, danger, betrayal and a good dose of wicked loving in an alternate Wild West.

Samhain Nights: VONNA HARPER

Vonna Harper

We've got more great Samhain authors so without further ado, let's introduce you to Vonna Harper!

Your latest release with Samhain is called STUDS, can you tell readers about this book a bit?

Studs, as the title suggests, is about two shape/shifting men who spend part of the time as horses. They aren’t just horses but wild mustangs who have taken a herd of mustang mares to the Hopi reservation where they’re safe—or so they think. Because these special horses are super fast, some bad guys (and an emotionally-conflicted Hopi young man) want to exploit them. The heroine who winds up in a menage with the two shifters is a Hopi woman drawn back to the land of her birth. She commits to doing what she can to safeguard the mustangs while trying to wrap her mind (and body) around those two unique beings. She’s also related to the emotionally-conflicted man which of course complicates things.

Where did you come up with the mythology for this book?

Glad you asked. I wrote nine Native American historicals for Tor Publishing. One was about the Navajo and Hopi & I have quite a collection of Native American nonfiction books. Of course I made up the shape-shifting part but the setting, particularly the underground kivas, is accurate.

What are some essential items you require when you write?

Ice water, my slippers, dog sleeping on the nearby couch, music playing. I also feel rich if I have plenty of paper and ink cartridges. Also assess to my email, Facebook, and Twitter for when my brain blows up.

Can you tell us a bit about your writing schedule?

Writing is my career. It pays the bills. I don’t write eight hours a day because I’m responsible for a disabled husband plus my mother is 93, but writing is always on my mind. I try to back away from the computer on the weekends but this is Sunday and I’ve written 2000 words plus done some research and promo.

If you could read one book again for the first time, which one would it be?

Wow. Maybe Jaws or Silence of the Lambs. Nothing light for me.

What is your favorite thing about being a Samhain author?

I can only pick one thing? Hmm. Well, I highly value my relationship with my editor. We don’t contact each other often but she’s always responsive, professional, and friendly. Something else that has really been wonderful about being with Samhain—years ago I wrote category romance under my real name Vella Munn and Samhain has contracted to bring out a number of them for their Retro Romance line. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. It's a warm summer's night and you are free to do anything you want!

What would you do and who would you spend it with?

Our family has long had a cabin on Forest Service land not that far from Crater Lake. Picture me sitting outside near the lake in the dark watching the moon & stars while listening to frogs and birds. I’d be sipping on wine and talking writing with a small select group of writer friends. Then maybe they’d all leave and a certain male someone would--

Haha! Keeping it PG, love it! Thanks for chatting with us today, Vonna!

Freedom. The thought floats on the hot breeze, strokes Magara Force's body as she jogs through a Florida wildlife refuge. Freedom from responsibility, from self-control even. But much as she longs to turn her body over to a man, its an irrational dream.
