Author Override: Carolyn Crane

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

Hidden in the backgrounds of book covers…

When I was first discussing the cover for Mr. Real with my cover artist, Earthly Charms I had found this really cool wall paper pattern I wanted to use for the background. Colorful and grungy and just cool looking. I showed it to her, and she was almost horrified. I couldn’t have that be the background! It had nothing to do with the book.

Those words really stuck with me We had this whole back and forth about how backgrounds needed to be meaningful, and say something about the story. I kind of got into it, and we eventually found the house, pictured below, to use. Because it’s the key place in the story, and full of mystery, and almost another character.

What’s funny is that, back when the artist was doing Mind Games, I was asked by Spectra for ideas on the background. I suggested a turnpike that looks like a rollercoaster (the Tangle!). I even sent them some twisty rollercoaster pictures and they did a really nice job with it. I didn’t think much of it at the time; I thought maybe they just didn’t have any good backgrounds laying around the office or something.

Since then, I’ve been really getting into backgrounds of book covers, especially paranormal and urban fantasy ones. The different things the artist and/or writer choose to portray.

Sometimes I look at the backgrounds more than the people in the foreground.

I love the backgrounds on this series! This is a beautiful Victorian London look, and there’s all that fire, because, of course, Miranda has power over fire. It’s also moody in feel, for a fabulously moody book. These backgrounds are significant and powerful.

I love the way the Tiki theme comes alive here in this background, because of course, the main character owns a Tiki bar. And in general, there’s much magic in the air here. I couldn’t remember why the stairs were there, so I tweeted Jenn and asked her. She said: “the stairs heading down to Tambuku Tiki Lounge, like, symbolically? Underground/demon-friendly haven/underworld. Hidden.” I love that. Backgrounds are where it’s at!

This is a fabulous background, set in a future New York gone wrong. I love the way the street is torn up. You know when that street is torn up, there’s trouble!

Laura Bickle’s fabulously frightening YA about an Amish girl who fights vampires. This background captures the forebodingness as it becomes clear all is not well with the world. I’m a sucker for animals in backgrounds, too, and here are the crows. They were kind of the first to sound the alarm. Also, I personally feel the brightest part of the cover being by Katie’s heart is no coincidence. Since it went so well asking Jenn about the underground thing, I asked Laura about the cap she holds. Laura’s own take: “I think that it's kind of symbolic of her faith. Hanging on and it slipping away.” Hmmm!! Laura also supplied this link to the full art. Even cooler!

http://blot.com/post/20865515379/the-hallowed-ones

I so love this background. This is a high adventure romance, book #2 in the Iron Seas series. It’s a unique background, because you have the hero, Archimedes Fox, looking out through the whole metal/rivet & gears thing. The airship in the background is key, though, because they ride around on lots of airships and drop into dangerous places. The balcony behind him is presumably an airship balcony, suggesting something unseen below. I think the storm clouds are also purposeful.

This background captures the plot of this book so neatly – the heroine, Jennifer, accidentally opens a kind of gate and finds herself sucked into an ultra-enchanted fae realm where she herself has dangerous powers. I also love how sparkly the area around her is. The sparkles center on the heroine. In my mind, that’s no accident. I asked Jeffe if she saw anything else special. “I also love how his hand from the back is kind of translucently moving through her,” Jeffe says.

Okay, now I wish I’d asked all these authors for extra commentary. This is so interesting. Do all authors think about backgrounds so much? Anyway, I’m so focused on paranormal backgrounds these days. It’s kind of fun!!

The woman of his dreams…with the secret agent of his nightmares

Alix Gordon is a woman who doesn’t take life too seriously. What’s the fun in that? So when she stumbles across occult software that can bring any computer image to life, she conjures up lots of awesome outfits and accessories. And then, on one drunken, horny night, she conjures up Sir Kendall, the sexy TV ad spy . . . who looks exactly like Paul Reinhardt, the hot martial arts teacher who kicked her out of class a few years ago.

Fighter Paul Reinhardt has good reason to hate Sir Kendall, the character he brought to life to land a part in a TV ad; he’d do anything to forget him. A cross country road trip seems just the thing . . . until Paul finds himself inexplicably drawn to Minnesota and is shocked to discover Sir Kendall – in the flesh – with the girl he’d once loved from afar. He barges into Alix and Sir Kendall’s love nest, determined to stop the madness – somehow.

But is super spy Sir Kendall transforming into something more dangerous anyone can imagine? And what will Sir Kendall do when Paul and Alix finally give into their mad lust for each other?

Cari Silverwood

Writing Rough Surrender was like eating a meal prepared by a chef – I kept finding new layers to the story as I wrote it. Researching it was bliss. And writing it was a first too as I’d never written an historical before. I’ve read far more historical non-fiction than fiction. I am planning to write a sequel, probably after Christmas, and I mean to set it partly in the US if the car rally background seems a good place to set the story. Faith mentions the Glidden Car Rally in the book.

But Rough Surrender is not the book I’m featuring here. I’ve written a contemporary BDSM story which is a ménage M/f/f. This book is called The Dom with a Safeword – the first ménage and first completely fiction contemporary by me. Another first is that I wrote it with two other authors, and we each took a character. I was called on to be the ‘sexpert’ lol. Leia Shaw was the dialogue and humor expert and Sorcha Black was our new to publishing, but up-and-coming great writer. And none of us are contemporary writers normally.

One of the joys I discovered was opening up the doc for the story and finding that the story had moved on without me. The quirks of the people we wrote slowly unfurled and crept out from under the bed without me doing much at all. It was like opening a birthday present most days and added to the whole experience of writing. It helped a lot that we knew exactly who these people were that we were writing. We knew how they ticked and what they’d do when faced by different dilemmas. Like much good fiction, these characters are drawn loosely from people we know.

I wrote the Dom, Jude. Leia wrote the innocent submissive, Sabrina, who is new to both BDSM and girl on girl. And Sorcha Black wrote the bisexual switch Q, who hates her real name and rarely tells it. Both the girls are what is called a brat in the BDSM world – they tend to open their mouths and get themselves in trouble. To them, that adds spice and fun to the relationship.

Be prepared for a bit of humor with this book. We were determined to make Jude like a real man – with a proper sense of humor. He’s not perfect and he can laugh at his mistakes, sometimes. Which time those are may vary greatly so there’s an even chance you’d get your ass spanked for being all smartass to him.

Let’s hear from Q.
Q gave her an exasperated look then released her. “Smartass.”

“You already said that.” Sabrina collected her equipment off the ground.

“You go through life in a perpetual state of smartassery.”

Sabrina handed Q her photography gear, thankful her friend had experience and was willing, for the most part, to help her. “Only for you, sexy.” She winked.
Her extreme smartassery, even when she really needs to hold her tongue, means Sabrina gets around with a red backside for much of the book. But I don’t think she minds as much as she lets on.

Late at night, on an amateur ghost hunt, Sabrina and her best friend Q are caught trespassing by the gorgeous, blonde Jude. The embers of attraction between them sizzle when they discover Jude’s kinks match their own. Jude is a Dom on his last summer of freedom before starting the prison sentence that is med school. Q is a badass bi switch who knows what she wants, and for years it’s been her cute, doe-eyed straight friend Sabrina. But the only way for Q to get into Sabrina’s heart and panties may be with Jude’s fist wrapped in her hair.

Domming the bratty Q and mischievous Sabrina isn’t going to be easy but Jude relishes the challenge. At the end of the summer, will they find a way to stay together when everything is tearing them apart?

The Dom with a Safeword releases Halloween.

A few minutes after, Sabrina was also secured, naked, and standing with her hands tied above her. From the bags he took out her costume and the broad leather belt, then he collected the crop and a few other things, and walked back with his attention completely on her. “I feel like dressing you up.”

“Is it pretty, Sir?” She wrapped her hands in the rope, and raised a skeptical eyebrow.

When he shook out the little black lace skirt and let the bra dangle she barely caught her frown before it spread.

Sabrina sighed. “Sir. I have a thing about only wearing what suits my complexion. And that’s like slutty vampire slut gear. I’m really not feeling all that undead today.”

He swallowed the laughter, let the ball gag uncurl from his hand. “Whatever made me think I’d need this?”

“Nooo.”

“Yes.”

Though she ducked away as far as the rope would let her he caught her and popped in the gag.

The little skirt when he wriggled it up her legs sat on her midriff with the skirt so short it revealed her ass. But he loved it. The matching see-through bra was strapless and he did up the clasp then made sure her breasts sat with her nipples framed in the openings. He kissed each, once.

“Beautiful. Watch while I do things to Q. But, come to think of it…now I have you all tied up…” Like he had before, he played with her breasts and her pussy, even put his mouth to each nipple and sucked a while. When he had her screwing her toes into the floor, he stopped. “There. Now you know how you make Q feel, most days. Such a tease.”

He circled her, cruised his palm over her ass. “I can’t pass this up. If I put one hand here…” He cupped her pussy with the heel of his hand on her clit. This would do it for her. He spanked her hard, six times on one cheek, then ten on the other.

Her muffled groans came out past the gag. He started spanking her again, alternating ass cheeks, and kept going until she pressed herself rhythmically onto his hand. “There you go, pet. Now you’re extra hot.”

That made her growl indignantly.

He grinned. “You can learn how to wait patiently. Waiting builds character.”

Which infamous villain do you have a crush on?

ALYSSA: My first villain crush would have to be David from The Lost Boys. I was young and impressionable when we first met and he was all the bad boy I could want, filling up the screen with lots of swagger and confidence. This was back when vampires were the bad guys and you weren’t supposed to want to be into one of them. David had me at hello.

JENNIFER: OOOHH! Nice one Alyssa!

I have to say that my movie villain crush has to be Gary Oldman as Dracula in Bram Stoker's Dracula. Boy could rock a crushed velvet suit and top hat, mmmkay? And because I can't pick just one, I have to go with Gerard Butler. As Dracula. In Dracula 2000.

I like and own both movies, and although critics didn't love them, I think they're great stuff. :)

VRISTEN: Sorry - I'm the boring one. I don't have any villain crushes I can think of. I do tend to like the mobster/assassin/just plain criminal types of character, though...a bit like Benicio del Toro's characters in The Hunted or The Way of the Gun.

EDEN: Okay, right off the top of my head I would have to say Mark Wahlburg in Fear. He was ninety percent sexy, dominant, obsessive male and 100% bat shit crazy, I’m gunna stab you with a blunt knife during sex and caress you with affection as you bleed to death.

And the rollercoaster scene?!? Well to be honest that’s the only part of the movie I remember…oh and the dog getting its head chopped off…umm…yeah…okay, so maybe not a good choice after all. Is it too late to change my answer?

Gleams of a Remoter World Tour

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

Hi There! Thanks for joining us on the virtual book tour for my newest release, Gleams of a Remoter World. All week long, I’ll be visiting some of our reader’s favourite blogs to talk about the book and how it came to be.

Enjoy! And in the meantime, if you'd like to find out more about me or my writing, please just drop into my website or my blog.

Soundtrack to Gleams of a Remoter World

As you may have seen elsewhere, Riptide Publishing have just been celebrating their first birthday with a month-long online party.  One aspect of the celebrations was a big mass-author interview, with all sorts of fascinating questions, and one of my favourite questions on that interview was, 'If your book was ever made into a film, which three music tracks would you like to use?'.

I answered the question with three tracks that were perfect for 'Gleams of a Remoter World', but the question really started me thinking.  Surely there were more than three tracks I could come up with, which would illustrate, or add to the atmosphere of, various scenes in the book?  I started to chew my pen, and hunt through files on YouTube and my own music collection, and bit by bit, I came up with the following play-list—I’ve linked to YouTube videos for each song, so you can listen with ease!

A great introduction to the novel and to any film that might be made of it!  Quiet, atmospheric, and very appropriate either to the opening credits or to the very first scene in the barn.

2.         Mary Black: 'Leaving the Land'.
For Chris's first visit to the ruined church and abandoned priest's house.  The lyrics would be a perfect accompaniment to the roofless buildings and toppled stone walls that Chris and Jo find.

3.         Japan: 'Ghosts'.
During the scene where the ghosts first appear to Chris.  The lyrics, and the incredibly spooky vocals of lead singer David Sylvian, still send shivers up and down my spine!

This is the particular track quoted from when Chris visits the ruined Celtic monastery so it would obviously be the perfect backdrop to his experiences there, as well as being beautiful enough and tranquil enough to suit the scenery and the poignant site of the monks' home.

5.         The Specials: 'Ghost Town'.
This track is perfect for the scene where Chris goes to Paulie's Liverpool home to try to find him.  The main chorus would be a wonderful refrain to his increasingly frustrating search.

6.         Abba: 'The Day Before You Came'.
Some people laugh at Abba but their later tracks are often exceptional, both musically and lyrically, and this has long been one of my favourites.  The contrast of the singer's dull everyday life with the promise of what happens the day 'you came' would be a great backdrop for Chris as he lives his solitary life in Ireland towards the end of the book.  I'm not saying any more for fear of spoiling the surprise!

I hope some of these tracks help set the mood for you before and after reading Gleams of a Remoter World!

Paranormal journalists Chris Mullins and Jo Perry are sent to Ireland's remote west coast to investigate tales of hauntings at a ruined church. Chris, who has an inbuilt sensor for ghosts, is drawn to the old priest’s house next door, where he faces an otherworldly encounter so strong it leaves him reeling. Their research leads to a tangled web of forbidden love, family rows, and even, possibly, murder.

Chris jumps at the chance not only to solve the mystery, but also to aim for the coveted Moondust Award, a prize for the first journalist who proves that ghosts exist. Jo, though, is less enthusiastic, both about the award and her on-off relationship with Chris. Things become even more confused when Chris finds himself falling for Paulie, one half of a gay couple on holiday in the same village.

Only the wild, haunted landscape of Ireland can give Chris the answers he so craves, but to find them, he may have to choose between the Moondust Award and the matters of his heart.

Author Bio: Fiona writes gritty yet darkly humorous fiction, often involving gay characters and almost always with a twist in the tail. Her work has been published in anthologies from the likes of Byker Books, Pill Hill Press, and QueeredFiction; as well as in magazines and online at sites such as The Pygmy Giant, Shotgun Honey, and Velvet Mafia.

Fiona currently splits her life between a pointy Victorian house in Birmingham (the original one in the UK) and a slate cottage within stone-throwing distance of England’s largest lake. She shuttles between the two so often it makes her head spin, which might explain the rather breathless style of her writing, but she hopes to be settled in Cumbria by the end of the year.

EXCERPT from PLEASURE’S EDGE
(Warning-a li’l X-rated!)

She was still shivering when he pulled back and moved her, laying her face down on his lap.
“Alec?”
Her body went tense all over.
“Shh. It’s time, Dylan. This is why we’re here. You’re ready.”
“Alec...No. I can’t...”
She was struggling to sit up, but he held her more firmly.
“Are you telling me ‘red’? Are you safe-wording out of the scene? If you are, I will let you up and we’ll get you dressed and leave here. Is that what you want?”
“I...no.”
He could barely stand to do it, to hold her down. Spank her. It would only make his straining cock harder, make it more difficult to keep himself under control. No woman had challenged his self control the way Dylan did. But he could deal with it. He simply would. He wanted to touch her more than anything in the world at this moment.
“Are we staying, Dylan?”
“Yes.”
He could feel the slightest give in her body. It was enough. He pulled the sheer mesh of her panties into the sweet line between her cheeks, baring them to his hands. He smoothed his palms over the silken flesh, just stroking her skin. Eventually, she went loose in his lap. Perfect. As perfect as the tight curve of her bare ass.
He began to tap with his fingertips, just hard enough that he knew she could feel it. He listened to her breathing for any sign of panic, but she was fine so far. He slapped a little harder, the flat of his palm making a small smacking sound. Her breathing didn’t change, but her flesh grew warm and showed the slightest tinge of pink.
“Are you all right, Dylan?”
“Yes.”
She was still loose and warm, and he knew she was slipping into the edge of subspace, had perhaps already reached it when he was working her with his fingers, before she even came.
His cock twitched, swelled.
Don’t think about that now. Concentrate.
He smacked her harder, his other hand still holding the back of her neck firmly. He knew she was feeling some pain. He also knew the desire in her body could convert it to pleasure if he handled her correctly.
He intended to.
Pausing to stroke her pinking skin, he smiled to himself at the lovely blush there. Drawing his fingertips over her buttocks, he pinched at the undersides. She squirmed, but her breath was still even. There wasn’t an ounce of tension in her muscles. He knew if he could see her face her pupils would be dilated, her cheeks flushed.
“Dylan, are you with me?”
“Yes.”
“I’m going to really spank you now.”
A soft moan, then she said, “Yes...”
“Good girl.”

EXCERPT from WICKED RELEASE:
Excerpt #2 sexy
There were books piled in corners and on the floor along the wall, but this was no library. It was a den of temptation and decadence, complete with a reflective wall beside the sumptuous bed. A wall that she sensed was more than it seemed.
But it was the art—sketches and paintings resting on easels and hanging on the walls—that ensnared her. They were all of one woman. In abstract. From behind and in profile. Nude and barely clothed. The details were exquisite, as if the artist had spent hours perfecting each one. The subject had long, dark hair and caramel eyes. She also had a distinctive birthmark on her hip.
Her. Every drawing was of her.
She might be disturbed if it weren’t so flattering. If it weren’t Lorie who had painted them. “How?”
Lorie came up behind her, his hands warm on her waist. “I told you, Sarah. I dreamt of you for years. I would wake in the night and have to recreate you, have to hold you in my mind. I suppose this is more your room than mine.”
Con stretched out on the couch that was twice as wide as he was and sighed. “Let’s compromise and call it our room. I know I feel right at home here.”
Sarah smiled at Con’s words, but the moment she turned in Lorie’s embrace, she was lost. The way he was looking at her. The longing and hunger in his expression. Magic pulsed between them, beating with a single heartbeat. Connected.
“Will you stand there staring at each other all night, or am I going to have to move this along?” Con placed several pillows behind his head and watched them, answering his own question. “Sarah, I believe you and Lori have some catching up to do. I’m nothing if not a fair and honorable man. Be a love and take your clothes off, will you? And then go wait for him on the bed.”
A startled glance in his direction told her this was not another attempt at humor. It was almost worded as a request, but its tone held a hint of command. She had the strangest reaction to it.
Excitement.
She walked slowly over to the edge of the bed and began to remove her shoes and jeans, watching the two men as they watched her.
The desire in both their gazes sent a heady rush through her system. Con may be directing her actions, but their looks said she had all the power. She controlled them with each button she released. They were her captives. It was a heady sensation.
By the time she’d removed her last piece of clothing and climbed on all fours onto the bed, she was shaking with need. Lorie was so still and silent she might have worried he’d changed his mind, if not for the pulse beating a passionate drumbeat in his neck. If not for his clenched jaw and stained cheeks. Or those eyes, brilliant in their longing.
“I’m here,” she whispered breathlessly. “What now?”
Con’s fists were clenched behind his head. She could see the white of his knuckles. “Now if Lorie doesn’t join you, I will.” Lorie didn’t need to be told twice. He stripped in record time and stood in front of her, steps away from her mouth to let her look her fill.
Had she called him an angel? His face was perfect, almost innocent in its beauty. His body made her ache. A fallen angel, then. A man sculpted to indulge in a woman’s every sinful thought. A man she had to sample.
She leaned forward and licked her lips, eager to take him into her mouth, when Con’s voice stopped her. “Not yet, Sarah. Turn your hips toward me. That’s right. Good girl. Now spread your legs. More. That is nice. Okay, now you can taste him. But don’t let him come. Not until I say. Not until he’s inside you.”
Lorie was watching her carefully, trying to hold himself back and gauge her reaction at the same time. “You can say no anytime, sweet Sarah. You’ll never be forced.”
Perhaps this should disturb her, these strong men controlling her actions. Guiding her. But it was having the opposite effect. With them, it seemed, she had no shame. She smiled. “Is it wrong that I enjoy it? That I have no desire to say no?”
His blue eyes darkened and his teeth clenched. “No, sweet. It’s right. It’s perfect. You were made for us. Nothing we do with each other, nothing we feel is wrong.” He slid his fingers through her hair and tugged lightly. “And since you have no objections, I think Con gave you a command.”
Yes. Yes, he had. She leaned forward, feeling Lorie’s fists clench in her hair when she opened her damp lips over the tip of his shaft. Her magic rose up from a well deep inside her, green and gold mingling with his soft lavender as she took him in her mouth.
Shameless. Wild. Heavenly. The words were not enough to describe her body’s reaction to this act. To his taste. He was better than any dessert. Salty and hot and delicious on her tongue, she opened her mouth to take more of his width. To take all of him.
Her thighs were damp with arousal. Arousal she knew Con could see from across the room. And she wanted him to see. Wanted him to lick his lips as he imagined her taste on his tongue. She spread her legs farther apart and rocked her hips in time to her mouth’s rhythm.
A groan from the couch told her he was still watching. That he wanted to join them.
“Con, don’t you dare fucking move.” Lorie’s growl made her shiver.  “I need this. Need her. Oh, hell, Sarah. How are you—? What are you doing?”
She’d reached up with one hand to cup the tight sac at the base of his shaft, caressing it as she slid her mouth down until her lips nearly touched her fingers. She swallowed.
Con’s pained moans echoed in her ears. “She’s a natural. I knew she’d be a natural. Knew her mouth was made for us.”
Lorie’s hips jerked against her, his hands guiding her head almost helplessly against his cock. “I’m not sure I can hang on, Sarah. This feels too damn good. Oh, God, what your mouth can do should be a crime. Don’t stop. That’s it. I just. Need. A few more—”
“Stop. Now.”
It was instinctive. She was so attuned to them that she pulled away without hesitation, though she wanted more. She wanted to taste Lorie’s completion on her tongue. To know she could do that to him. Affect him so swiftly.
“I hate you, Con,” Lorie snarled.
Con snorted. “No you don’t.” He paused. “Okay, maybe you do now, but you’ll thank me later.” His tone softened. “How’re you doing, baby? Still with us?”
She nodded, feeling dazed. “I think so.” Her body was screaming for release, screaming for someone to give her what she needed. Each second that passed wound her insides tighter and tighter, until she was sure she would snap. She was tempted to grant herself temporary relief, but they were watching. And Con hadn’t given her permission to stop playing his game.
“Are you ready for more?”

Last, but definitely not least, is the newest Smutketeer Robin L. Rotham’s Halloween tale, FRANKENDOM! This erotic twist (and we do mean twisted!) on the Frankenstein story is one HOT read—and not for the faint of heart!

FrankenDom (RELEASES 10/29)
By Robin L. Rotham

A scientist with an obsession. A protégée with an agenda. And a surgeon with needs too long denied…
Vascular surgeon Dr. Rachel McBride knows she’d be insane to pass up a prestigious fellowship for the chance to work on Julian Kilmartin’s cutting-edge research project. The reclusive neurologist has been the object of her submissive daydreams since residency, and time and distance have only strengthened the dark compulsion.
To complicate matters, a former lover who was all too aware of her attraction to Julian is also on the team. Charmingly obnoxious Dr. Colin Carter was Julian’s protégée back in the day, and nothing appears to have changed…or has it? There’s an earnestness to Colin now, an urgency she’s never seen in him—and he claims her desire for Julian was reciprocated but deliberately left unfulfilled.
When she takes the chance and travels to eastern Europe, Rachel discovers that research is only part of her job description—and submission is only the beginning of the sexual excesses Julian and Colin will demand from her.
But when the unthinkable nature of Julian’s research project is finally revealed, Rachel is ready to run from the men she thought she knew. Securing her cooperation will take a touch of coercion, a bit of bondage, and all the erotic torture two deliciously deviant doctors can apply.

Reader Advisory:  You should assume any Robin L. Rotham book contains BDSM elements, anal play, and every possible ménage à trois permutation plus occasional spares. Additionally, FrankenDom contains mad scientists, real dungeons, whips, chains, spanking, a variety of taboo fantasies, mild puppy play, electrical devices in uncomfortable places, humor, and an intimidating ratio of sadists to masochists.

Excerpt 3:
Taking a deep breath, I slipped into the dim corridor, leaving my door slightly ajar in case I needed to beat a hasty retreat. Adrenaline made my hands shake and my heart pound in my throat. Where in the hell was I going? To my right, seemingly an eternity away, was the tower with the elevator I’d come up in. Across from my room was a closed door. To my left, two more closed doors on the same side as mine before the corridor made an abrupt right turn I couldn’t see around. What was down there?
Decision made, I alternately crept and made panicked leaps down the corridor, flattening myself inside door frames when I heard any sort of noise—as if my protruding boobs wouldn’t give me away.
Or my noisy stomach. I gave it a reproving pat and whispered, “Hush, you.”
From my vantage point in the final door frame on the left, I craned my neck to peer down the adjoining corridor but saw nothing. I heard something, though—several somethings that sent ice water trickling down my spine.
I listened as if my life depended on it.
Which it very well might, if what I heard was any indication—guttural male cries, low-pitched chuckles, and the murmur of male voices. They were all muted by an electronic hum that made the door under my right hand vibrate slightly. And there was a persistent crackling and snapping that sounded like radio static.
Or something more sinister.
Every muscle in my body tensed for flight. It took a several deep breaths and a searing lecture on the evils of cowardice from my inner bad girl before I was calm enough to forge ahead.
Another glance back the way I’d come and then I darted onto uncharted carpet. It was a relatively short corridor with only two doors, one on my left, which I flattened myself into right away, and one in the terminal wall.
Terminal. I swallowed hard at the irony. Unlike all the other doors, which were traditional six-panel models painted pristine white, this one was round on top, made of lightly stained wood planks and held together by heavy black hardware—two flat metal pieces that formed a reinforcing X were riveted to the door just below the curve, and two more pieces anchored it across the top and bottom. The handle was nothing more than a thick leather strap doubled over and bolted to the wood.
The primitive door was open. Not much, only enough to see a sliver of darkness and almost continuous flashes of watery light—but it was open.
I bit my knuckle. Nothing said Go away! like a big black X on the door.
But it was open. An open door was an invitation…right?
The temptation to creep closer and try to see something clashed fiercely with the desire to scurry back to my room and reassess my priorities.
The sounds were more distinct now, and I swallowed hard when I recognized the distinctive buzz and snap of some kind of powerful electrical device discharging. It was a relief to realize the human sounds seemed unrelated to the snaps and flashes of light. During one of my ER rotations, I’d seen an electrical burn from electro-stimulation gone wrong and I never wanted to see it again, much less experience it for myself.
But those throaty masculine chuckles and amused murmurs were definitely a reaction to  pained grunts and groans. Someone was being tortured in there. And someone else was enjoying it.
A sharp yelp made me gasp, and I slapped one trembling hand over my mouth while the other flattened on my stomach. That could be me in there, being tortured for someone else’s amusement.
Okay, maybe I should have taken this a little slower. My heart was about to batter its way right out of my ribcage, and I couldn’t tell if it was from excitement or terror.
Time to get my ass back to my room. I didn’t have to travel the entire road to self-discovery in a single day.
Before I could flee, a loud, stuttering groan rang out, followed by, “Jesus, please, Sir! Ah! Motherfucker…fuckfuckFUUUUCK!”
My eyes widened. That was Colin.
“Oh my God,” I whispered against my bloodless fingers. They were torturing Colin? He was a bottom?
I took a shaky step toward the door, and then another. What was happening to him?
Was it something that would happen to me if I stuck around?
Did I want to find out?
A heartbeat later, the choice was no longer mine. My wrists were seized from behind and I was hauled against a hard masculine body with my arms crossed over my chest. I was too breathless with terror to even squeak when he put his mouth against my ear.
“Gotcha, Dr. McBride!”
