Author Override: Kelly Jamieson

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

KELLY JAMIESON

Undercover and under the covers

So here I am at Under the Covers Book Blog talking about going undercover…and under the covers! In fact that’s the “warning” for Hot Ride:

Warning: Features a badass biker hero and kickass heroine who go at it undercover -- and under the covers.

In researching for my book Hot Ride, I learned a lot about the incredible stress of being undercover. I wanted to portray this as realistically as I could for my characters, but I also wanted this to be a romance and in a romance there are a few rules you just can't break. I couldn't have my characters turn criminal, for example. I wanted to show the struggles they face, but I didn't want to destroy their lives, which can happen "in real life". And I had to have a happy ending (not just because it's a rule, but because *I* have to have a happy ending!).

There's the stress of constantly watching what you say, knowing your new identity and always staying in character. There's the daily exposure to drugs and the pressure to use them. There's the constant exposure to crime and danger and violence. Never being able to trust anyone, constant fear and paranoia. Undercover agents see things they can't do anything about, people getting beaten and at worse, killed. One mistake can cost you your life.

There's also the tension between the undercover operatives and their handlers and bureaucrats, who sometimes might think the operatives enjoy playing biker a little too much, who worry about how much financial and human resources are being spent on the mission. Something the leader of the undercover team is responsible for is making sure that the team is “separating” —not confusing their undercover lives with their real ones. It's all physically, emotionally and mentally exhausting. For many real life undercover agents, it can take a toll on their health.

What do you think about the portrayal of undercover agents in romances vs the real life struggles they have? How important is it to balance realism with "romance"?

About the Author

I'm a married mother of two who lives a very ordinary life outside of my imagination. When I'm not writing I'm usually reading. I also like to cook and that means I like to read cookbooks and cooking magazines. In the summer I enjoy spending time gardening and in the winter I like to read gardening magazines and seed catalogues. I love lying on the beach or on my deck with a glass of wine and a good book. I also love to travel. As you can see, pretty much all my activities involve reading somehow! Although I don't have as much time for it any more, I also love to shop, especially for clothes and shoes. Some think I'm obsessed with shoes but that is not true (although my husband would point out that there is no room left in our closet).

Courage is feeling the fear... then pouring on the throttle.

Abandoned or betrayed by everyone she ever loved, Sera Manning’s life spiraled out of control until a near death experience left her with a mission. Now a DEA agent, her sole focus -- and her first undercover assignment -- is to take down a drug cartel that’s manufacturing seductive, deadly angel sugar.

To do it, she needs access to Operation Black Abyss to establish a connection between the cartel and the Death Angels outlaw motorcycle gang. Which means she must pose as a couple with another agent who’s already deep undercover.

ATF agent Ryan Thomas desperately needs a female agent to maintain his cover in the gang, but the last thing he wants is a rookie agent jeopardizing his op. Especially one that is a sexy reminder why it’s a bad idea to get involved while on a case.

Living together, surrounded by crime, pretending their sizzling sexual tension is just for show is getting harder by the day. But as the mission comes to a head, the two fiercely independent warriors must decide which fear is worse. Losing their quarry... or losing each other.

Warning: Features a badass biker hero and kickass heroine who go at it undercover -- and under the covers.

Review: Fury of Fire by Coreene Callahan

4.5 Feathers
Fury of Fire
Coreene Callahan
(Dragonfury # 1)

This is a long over due praise and review to a wonderful debut novel. I've read it few weeks back and had procrastinated on my reviews. So here goes.

Coreene Callahan did an extraordinary job with this intricate world of humans and dragon shifters. Everything about this book had me turning the pages one after the next.

The Dragonkind exist but endangered and their numbers continue to dwindle. It’s bit complicated as it’s not that easy for these male dragons to produce offspring. They are only fertile twice a year and only with certain human females that have certain "energies". Unfortunately, even when pregnancies occur, the mother does not usually survive the delivery.

Though procreation is at top priority, for the Nightfury, saving humans from the Razorbacks (rogue dragons) comes first. These rogues are on a mission to up their numbers by impregnating any female they can. Then, kidnapping the babies as their own.

Bound by duty, Bastian and his Nightfury dragons will do what it takes to protect human kind, take responsibilities to the orphaned babies, and raise them the right way. And one night in a rescue mission, Bastian will meet his mate Caroline, a nurse practitioner. Fates as you call it, as they meet in the same place with similar intentions… to rescue a dragonkind baby.

Fury of Fire is one of the best books I have read this year. It is action packed, full of humor, banter and it had an interesting plot of dragonkind. The romance was also great and it had a good amount of smexy scenes. Bastian is very alpha and Caroline is a very independent and strong heroine. I love their chemistry together. The secondary characters were definitely entertaining and I found myself wanting to know more about them. I am especially interested to know more about Angela *cough*beautiful Name*cough* and Rikar who is obviously to be the H/h for the next book. Rikar, Wick, Sloan and Venom are Nightfuries we can expect to hear more of or hope for anyway. These guys have the funny banter that will have you LOL several times in the book.

Now here’s the thing, this book has some similarities to the world of BDB; language, some personalities, love, humor, banters and camaraderie between the brothers. But….it is also a world of its own. So, if you like BDB and you are open to something similar, these Dragon Shifters are alpha males you can enjoy. I truly enjoyed them and I highly recommend this book.

Author Override: Shana Galen

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

In My Free Time
by Shana Galen

I often joke with my friends who are writers that I’ll work on my next project idea in my free time—between two and four a.m. It’s only a little bit of an exaggeration. Anyone who works at home knows there’s no such thing as ever being “off,” especially when one also has a small child who needs a great deal of attention.

But a year or so ago I decided I had to do something for me or else I would have nothing to give back to my family or my writing. I made a conscious effort to return to some of the hobbies I enjoyed before I was so busy with contracts and my young daughter. After all, my husband could hold down the fort a few times a month, and I could refill my creative well, so to speak.

The first thing I did was to join a fitness boot camp. I’d gotten out of shape and didn’t seem capable of motivating myself to work out, or at least work out very hard. I would go to the gym, work out for an hour, and not even break a sweat. Clearly, I was not going to push myself. That’s the beauty of boot camp. It starts at the insane hour of 5 a.m., and I’m done at 6, which is before most people even get up. There are always two personal trainers who take the group through a series of exercises. We run, do push-ups, sit-ups, hold planks, and just about every other cardio move you can think of. Every time I go, the work out is different. And when I don’t feel like working hard, the trainers yell at—I mean, motivate me. I’ve also made some great friends, and now we meet at 5 to run a few miles on the days when there is no boot camp. Crazy, right? But it’s my time, and after a year, I’ve come to look forward to those quiet, sweaty, morning hours.

The next thing I did was to join a book club. I wish I could find a book club that reads romance, but I settled for one who doesn’t only read literary fiction. It’s been fun to talk to other women about books and read several novels that I wouldn’t have picked up otherwise.

Finally, I joined a band. I majored in opera in college, and I’ve always loved to sing. There’s a band that plays during the contemporary service at church, and I joined as one of the singers. I can’t sing every week, but I try to make it once a month. It’s fun to learn new songs and hear them come together with the other singers and the full band.

As an author, I’m constantly finding ways in which my real life seeps into my fiction. I definitely think my focus on leisure was part of the inspiration for my Jewels of the Ton series, a trilogy about three glamorous Regency courtesans who get mixed up with some dangerous diamonds and some equally dangerous men. Who has more leisure time than a courtesan? How exciting it must have been to go to all the balls and social events, to attend the theater, and to shop for sumptuous gowns and sparkling jewels. I had a lot of fun picturing all the beautiful clothing and hairstyles my heroine Juliette in When You Give a Duke a Diamond would wear.

But the book would have been all of about twenty pages if that was the whole story. Juliette has a few secrets, and she is unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. She desperately needs the help of the sixth Duke of Pelham, and he would rather stay far, far away from her.

When You Give a Duke a Diamond was a really fun book to write. It’s no wonder I have so little time for leisure when I enjoy writing so much.

What do you like to do for fun? Anything unusual?

ARC Review: Run the Risk by Lori Foster

Run the Risk
by Lori Foster
(Love Undercover # 1)

A new romantic suspense series by Lori Foster, cue squeeeees of excitement!!!  After enjoying Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor so much, I was starting to feel the void of her sexy alpha men.  RUN THE RISK delivered on alphas with an exciting story that captured my interest from the beginning and never let go.

The plot

I actually enjoyed the change of pace with the type of suspense in this series.  This wasn't so much human trafficking and more undercover detective work.  Still plenty of suspense, still bad guys who may not really be the bad guys, and quite a bit of action.  The twists and turns in the story kept it refreshing and kept me interested.  I really couldn't keep up with guessing what would happen.  I also enjoyed that people were never what they seemed.

The characters

Logan Riske is so hot and delicious.  I can totally picture him lounging around, no shirt, jeans hung low on his hips, comfortable barbequeing and drinking a beer.  Casual and cool.  And extremely hot.  He wants to do the right thing, which is why he's still investigating and doing his undercover work.  He wants to catch the guy who killed his friend.

Pepper Yates was a bit of a surprise for me.  It was almost like having two of her in the book.  The original Pepper and the new and improved.  I think I liked both in their different roles.  First mousy with a hint of bold.  Then bold with a hint of vulnerable.  She loves her brother and takes risks for him.  But she also takes risks with her heart and lets Logan in.

The extra

Of course, I always love a good side story and secondary characters.  Reese and Alice have a little connection there but Reese (Logan's partner) has a lot on his plate to pursue anything.  I enjoyed them both a lot and can't wait to read their book next. Of course, my bad memory, I don't remember Alice but apparently she's from TRACE OF FEVER.  Must revisit that book before her story comes out in BARE IT ALL in April.

Review: Wicked Garden by Lorelei James

Wicked Garden
by Lorelei James

Favorite Author, Lorelei James. Check
Hot menage story. Check
Second chance at love romance. Check

What more can I ask for?  Really?  I got this short story because, quite frankly, I forgot that Lorelei James was in a very hot menage anthology that I wanted to read.  Then I started hearing about her upcoming October 2 title BALLROOM BLITZ, which is a character from this story, and I just had to catch up.

I think this just proves that Lorelei James can write an awesome romance, sexy as hell and panty-melting erotic....without cowboys.  *gasp*  Yes, you read that right.  No cowboys in sight in this wicked garden.

Eden, the teenager, wanted to loose her virginity to Billy.  She loved him then.  But he didn't think he deserved such a gift or such love and he ran.  They both went on with their lives and now Billy comes back into town on business and runs right into Eden, business and personal.

What they couldn't have then, they have now.  Their chemistry was sizzling, but their love for each other was as well.  I could tell they were meant to be together and complemented each other perfectly.  And just when you think there's nothing else that could make this any better, Jon White Feather comes along.

He's a Native American rocker, a celebrity, and Eden's booty call.  That all makes for some hot, threesome  moments.

For a short story, I think the characters are well developed enough that you can still believe their love for each other.  Whether it's Billy and Eden or Eden and Jon.  It all made sense and connected.  And I can't help but to be more than ready to read Jon's story.
