Author Override: Alexandra Ivy

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

What happened to genres?

Long before I became a published writer I was an avid reader. And like many avid readers my tastes were eclectic. One summer I remember reading Nancy Drew, the Hobbit, Victoria Holt and Moby Dick. It didn’t occur to me that the books were a variety of genres. I just knew that one week I was in the mood for a mystery and the next I wanted something with adventure.

Things changed when I decided to make my living as a writer. I thought (rightly or wrongly) that there were rules that had to be followed. A reader of traditional regencies had different expectations than those who read historicals. Gothics, for goodness sakes, had to have atmosphere. High fantasy fans didn’t want sci fi elements slipping in, and westerns didn’t have aliens.

I suppose that’s why I was so fascinated when I picked up my first paranormal romance. Suddenly there was a mixture of romance and horror and adventure. I didn’t have to be in the mood for one thing or another. And so when I sat down to write my first paranormal I deliberately threw the rules out of the window. I could mix romance and magic and a kick-ass heroine with a hint of mystery and a whole plethora of sexy monsters. I could world-build to my heart’s content and never worry about those pesky “expectations”.

What a wonderful thing to be naïve. Even though I was already a published author I didn’t consider the fact that sales department had to be able to market the book to wholesalers, and that bookstores had to shelve the book so customers could browse for it among similar books, and that I would have to be able to give out a snappy explanation to encourage wary readers to give it a try. And, of course, once the book hit the shelves, it took on a life of its own.

Savvy fans of the newest trends were already sorting their favorite books into separate niches. There were paranormals, romantic fantasies, urban fantasies, steampunk, elf punk…the list was endless. My own books tended to end up in the paranormal section or the romance section depending on the bookstore. But just as I was accepting that my story wasn’t a mishmash of genres, but a genre in itself, I started getting emails from readers wondering if my parnamoral was dark or light.

Hmmm. That was a toughie. I understood the question…sort of. There is absolutely a different vibe to J.R. Ward’s stories compared to Kerrelyn Sparks. And then there is the wonderful, whacky world of Maryjanice Davidson that has little in common with Christine Feehan. But for many of us, the variations are more subtle. I do have a large dose of humor in my books (or at least passes for humor in my opinion), as well as an emphasis on the romance, but there’s also some fighting, a splash of blood and a dollop of gore. So where did that leave me?

Light or dark?

It’s a question that I’ve decided to leave to my readers (and the poor sales department at my publishing house)! And just as importantly I’ve accepted that while I might have changed from one genre to another, the rules today are out the window. Because of those daring authors willing to break the mold I can write zombies fighting the battle at the OK Corral or a regency with a werewolf. Perhaps there are purist who disdain the crossover between genres and that’s all right. There are a number of fantastic authors who continue to write the more traditional books. Many of whom I consume as fast as they can put the books out. But for those who have been waiting for the odd, the unexpected, and unusual, the recent trend has offered a welcomed variety and has perhaps enticed people who haven’t picked up a book since school to give reading another try.

So, whether or not the boundaries between genres might be blurring, or whether they’re simply being realigned, there’s no denying the opportunity for writers and readers to discover a whole new world! And that can’t be bad.

Review: The Real Werewives of Vampire County by Alexandra Ivy, Angie Fox, Tami Dane and Jess Haines

The Real Werewives of Vampire County
by Alexandra Ivy, Angie Fox, Tami Dane and Jess Haines
(Guardians of Eternity #7.6)

I love the title of this book! This was such a fun anthology, and even though I don't follow the series, if any, I was able to have enjoy and maybe be more into trying out the actual series. That's what anthologies are meant to do, right?

"Where Darkness Lives" by Alexandra Ivy - 5 Stars

I've only read one other novella in the Guardians of Eternity series and I didn't enjoy it as much as this one. This story rocked! And yes, it's my favorite in the whole anthology. It has one hell of a hot alpha male, Luc, who will make you drool all over yourself, especially when he's wearing his speedo by the pool. But not just that, I loved the heroine. Yes, Sophia is the Queen of Bitches, but I think she's a cool cat...or ... err.... wolf. She's had four daughters but thanks to being a werewolf she's still a hot and sexylicious blonde who is very confident and strong. After she realizes someone is trying to kill her she hires a bodyguard. Enter sexy Luc. And while he's doing his job keeping her safe, while keeping the secret of his identity from her, they realize they're mates. My only complaint... I wished it was a full length story!  The toe curling on this story is different than the average so up it to 3.

"Murder on Mysteria Lane" by Angie Fox - 4 Stars

This was my first Angie Fox story. Actually first time I heard of her. In her paranormal world, Heather McPhee, the outcast werewolf who has the ability of getting inside people's mind and making them tell the truth, gets to go undercover into Vampire County, aka Malibu, where all the trophy wives live. Why? Because her alpha's sister was murdered and they have three days to find the killer. She's partnering with a hot vampire, Lucien Mead. From the get-go she's not the type to fit in but I liked seeing her evolve and come out of her shell even though she was completely out of her element. And how cool that she's basically a truth serum? I want her ability! Although it takes a bit of time for things to heat up between Heather and Lucien they do end up steaming up the pages, even though I thought their first time was a bit awkward-timing.

"Werewolves in Chic Clothing" by Tami Dane - 3 Stars

Not so hot about this as a paranormal story. For most of this story there are no paranormal creatures really, maybe just a hint. As a murder mystery type story with a hint of humor it did keep me entertained. I thought the fact the hero's name is Jon Stewart was pretty comical. So the basic idea of the story is a girl moves in with her long distance boyfriend, whom she met online. Turns out she's moved into the replica of Stepford Wives, oh and by the way, her fiance is the suspect or murdering his ex wife. Oh and can I just complain about the "fade to black" sexy moments?

"What's Yours is Mine" by Jess Haines - 2.5 Stars

Maybe a bit harsh, huh? But I just really didn't care much for this story. There's a bunch of were women that are recruiting to turn other powerful women into weres. They set their sights on Tiffany, but she's keeping a secret and they need to find out about it before they present her with the contract to become a were. I didn't know all this paperwork was involved into being turned! There's no sex in this story or even really a mention of it.

Review: Supernatural by Larissa Ione, Alexandra Ivy, Jacquelyn Frank & G.A. Aiken

Supernatural
by Larissa Ione, Alexandra Ivy, Jacquelyn Frank and G.A. Aiken
(Lords of Deliverance # 1.5, Demonica #5.5, Guardians of Eternity # 7.5, Nightwalkers # 1.5, Dragon Kin # 4.5)
Paranormal Romance

This has been a highly anticipated anthology for me. Yeah, that's saying something considering I usually don't care much for short stories. But how often can I say 2 authors I love are in it and the other 2 are also supposed to be really good? My point exactly! I'll review them individually but just know that if for nothing else, I'd recommend this book for Ione and Aiken's stories!!

Vampire Fight Club by Larissa Ione

4.5 Feathers

I loved this story! Set in the Demonica/Lords of Deliverance worlds. We have cameos from our favorites from both series. Of course this story involves UGH because that's where Vladena originally works. After her brother comes into UGH pretty beaten up and dies they all start an investigation into where this all happened. As it turns out, there's a secret Fight Club, and no, it's not only vampires, there are plenty of shifters who fight in these underground events. That's what Vladena is, and her brother was. But she has a disadvantaged, she can't shift. And that is genetically a death sentence. She's almost come to terms with that. And now she wants revenge for the death of her brother.

Nathan is a vampire and leader of the Fight Club, but he's not the head honcho. He's someone else's puppet. And he has a lot of anger and resentment for things that were done to him that destroyed his soul. He's seen it all, nothing entices him anymore. Except when he sees Vladena, he wants her.

We get cameos from Eidolon, Shade, Wraith and even Con! As well as a BIG revelation at the end which I'm sure will play a part in the Lords of Deliverance series. See, Nathan is a day-walking vampire, and the key to that is who made him.

Darkness Eternal by Alexandra Ivy
3.5 Feathers

I'll be honest I have not read Guardians of Eternity, and this was actually my first read by Alexandra Ivy. I did like it, but I wasn't glued to the pages for it. Uriel is a vampire warrior and he hates jinns because one put a curse on him years ago during a battle and told him he would be his instrument in defeating his enemy. So he's lived thinking he can't be trusted around his own people in the event he will betray them.

Kata has actually been imprisoned by her sister and her mate, and when her sister finally dies and she believes herself to be free and able to search for her child. But Uriel is sent for her. And the attraction is immediate.

Except they are not home free yet, as it turns there's a trip into hell in their future. Along with some pretty hot sex.

This story was interesting, I liked the writing style, there was some romance, some steam, some action. I will definitely be reading more of her work soon.

Kane by Jacquelyn Frank
3 Feathers

OK... I have not read the Nightwalkers series but I have read Ms. Frank before, and I feel that in this story she did not get my interest. At all. I found myself even skimming through parts of it. *hangs head in shame*

Kane is one of the young ones, he is not 100 years old yet so he's still considered a child. They are not allowed to touch humans, but his desire for Corrine brings him to barely touch her one night. Just a soft caress. He is immediately forced to wipe her memory, he is punished and she is left alone. Except that touch started a change in her and she now needs to be close to him to live, and being forced apart for so long has made her very sick.

Now, having him shackled to a bed might not be a bad way to wake up, but she does have a lot to understand, and in a short period of time. They manage to do it mostly through his mind powers and her ability as his mate to read some of his thoughts.

Not bad... just mehhh

Dragon On Top by G.A. Aiken
4.5 Feathers

Oh the wonderful world of Ms. Aiken's writing! I am currently reading the Dragon Kin series but even though this is #4.5 it really could be read right after book 1 as this goes back in time not to the current set of brothers we are reading about, but their parents. In this case their aunt Ghleanna the Decimator.

She is the ultimate warrior chick, nobody mess with her. She knows she should need a mate that is as strong as her. But when she is tasked with escorting and protecting Bram, the smart and peacful dragon who writes up all the peace treaties that end her wars, she finds herself reconsidering that.

Ghleanna and Bram are just adorable, funny, sexy, hot and so damn entertaining! You can't help but love them! This story might just be my favorite in this anthology!
