Author Override: Kendra Leigh Castle

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

Dark Inspiration
By Kendra Leigh Castle

One thing I've noticed through all the books I've written is that every one of my characters has come together a little differently. Some arrive almost fully formed, others I have to put together piece by piece. All required some inspiration to really bring them to life, though...and lucky for me, I'm inspired by all sorts of random things! In my new book SHADOW RISING, which is the third in my Dark Dynasties series, I drew from some interesting places to get Damien Tremaine, the hero. If you're curious, here's a bit of the story behind how he came to be.

Damien, has been with me since the first book in the series. Originally intended to be a character who wouldn't live to see Book 2, Damien arrived in his big debut scene (where he tries to kill the heroine—he is an assassin) and immediately began showing off his particular blend of genteel manners and a razor sharp tongue. Impeccably dressed in khaki pants and an oxford shirt, his topcoat neatly folded on a chair, he was a hired killer with style...and I immediately knew there was more to him. I also knew, fairly quickly, that I was never going to be able to kill him off. He was one of those rare characters (for me, anyway) who arrives seemingly whole out of thin air, without much effort on my part. All I had to do was watch him and discover what made him tick.

The biggest inspiration for Damien was pretty obvious from the get-go. I knew where he'd come from. See, I have always loved rogues in historical romance. Clever, debauched, and almost unredeemable, they're some of my favorite characters. Damien, born the youngest son of a British nobleman in the late 1700s, was made from that mold. He's disgraced and unrepentantly disgraceful. After stumbling into low class vampdom as a cat-shifting Cait Sith, Damien escaped near-certain slavery to the Ptolemy dynasty and instead joined the secretive House of Shadows. He eventually became a Shade, a master thief and assassin, and never looked back. Now, his services are in demand by the very highblood vampires who would have spat on him.

I knew Damien didn't look like a typical "bad boy" character. He was a rich noble. He's stylish, more GQ than leather-clad angsty vampire. I always like to have a visual inspiration for my characters, and I knew pretty quickly who Damien would look like. Chris Evans, with his boy-next-door looks, sandy brown hair, and wicked smirk (not to mention that slightly cocked eyebrow thing he does that's just so...naughty) was perfect. And I must say, I enjoyed having him up on my office bulletin board while I worked on the book. Now, skills-wise, I also had a reference for how he moved—Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the Assassin's Creed games. I know, I know...it's a game. But those are some graceful, deadly, good-looking pixels. And finally, music junkie that I am, I ended up with a theme song for Damien's romance with Ariane, the beautiful, innocent Grigori he falls for against all his better judgment. That would be Rise Above 1 by Reeve Carney and Bono, from Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark. It's a gorgeous song, and suited their story perfectly. I played it a lot as I was writing the book!

So there you have it, the bits and pieces that came together to make Damien Tremaine. There's more to him, of course...but you'll have to read the book to see just what more there is! I will say that he's one of my favorite heroes so far.

Thanks so much to Annie for having me here today! I have a signed copy of SHADOW RISING to give away, so be sure to leave me a comment! I'll be here to chat all day. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about the book, the series, or writing in general, but let me ask you:
what do you find inspiring?

Ancient Secrets, Dark Passions...

As one of the Grigori, a noble vampire dynasty shrouded in mystery, Ariane has spent her life hidden away in the desert. Like all of her kind, she is a watcher, fated to observe, forbidden to act. Yet when her best friend, Sammael, vanishes, she defies all rules and flees her safe haven to bring him home.

A shape-shifting assassin for the House of Shadows, Damien Tremaine is hired to locate Sammael. His hunt for the wayward Grigori leads him to Ariane, the rogue vamp who stands between him and his bounty. Damien never lets emotion interfere with his work, but a single touch from the sexy, beguiling vampire shatters his self-control. Drawn together by their common goal, what begins as an alliance of necessity soon becomes one of desire. But when the secret at the dark heart of the Grigori comes to light, Damien and Ariane must make a choice that could bind them eternally...or tear them—and everything they care about—apart.

ARC Review: Shadow Rising by Kendra Leigh Castle

Shadow Rising
by Kendra Leigh Castle
(Dark Dynasties # 3)

I fell in love with Ms. Castle and her Dark Dynasties from the very beginning. I gave 5 Stars to Dark Awakening (book 1) and 5 STARS for Midnight Reckoning (book 2) and now another 5 Stars for Shadow Rising. Ms. Castle has been consistent with giving the right amount of romance, hot scenes, action and a very elaborate plot.

Damien Tremaine also stayed true to his character from book one, two and up to his very own story. This cat-shifter remains one of the best Shade for the House of Shadows, still very dangerous, mysterious, and definitely sexy. I love a hero with a grief-stricken past that made him a cold-hearted man. And finally to see him up close and personal is just a treat.

Her name is “Ariane not kitten” though being a Grigori Vampire, she IS as innocent as a kitten. But Ariane is a straight shooter, she does not mess around and she knows exactly what she wants. As innocent as she is, I love her, she stands up to what she believes in and can hold her own fairly well. She had her mind set on finding her mentor Sam and that is exactly what she is going to do. If it means to join forces with a shade so be it.

Opposites attract is the cliché but damn, isn’t that just the truth? The balance between Damien and Ariane was amazing; the cold hearted shade and the innocent vamp. It was fun to see them banter and Damien said the funniest things to annoy Ariane. And her rebuttal was just as hilarious. They complimented each other and it was amazing to see them finally find someone after all the years of solitude. Their relationship is a perfect match.

To those who already follow the series, a few things to keep in mind; the battle between the Dynasties continues but at a quiet state. Don’t be fooled as plans are brewing right under our noses. The seat for the Empusae is threatened and a few of the dynasties are still on building and rebuilding. The Shadow has Risen and is here to stay. Several things were unfolded in this book and I’m curious to see what Ms. Castle has in store for us as far as where the dynasties stand.

Also, I am most curious about Vlad dracul of the Dracul Dynasty, he has totally captured my heart. I would love to know more of him. From what I see he is a good ally to most of the dynasties but I’m sure you don’t want to be on his bad side. And I bet he would me a great hero to swoon over.

***Mark my words, if and when Ms. Castle decides to write about him, IT WILL BE EPIC***

Review: Midnight Reckoning by Kendra Leigh Castle

Midnight Reckoning
by Kendra Leigh Castle
(Dark Dynasties # 2)

I have been so excited to finally read the second installment of Castle's Dark Dynasties series. Dark Awakening blew me away and I had no doubt Midnight Reckoning would do the same.  This book takes place about seven months after Lily took a stand against Ptolemy and began her own dynasty.  Most of the Cait Sith have come to join the Lillim and still free to chose or do what they please.

Jaden Harrison, a hot, intense cat/vamp (Tynan's friend) finds himself  lost and not knowing what do with his new found freedom. But as faith would have it, Jaden will choose to protect a female wolf from an attacker. A female wolf he's met at the safe house a few months back.  Attempting to do the right thing, Jaden goes above and beyond to help; not only from her current attacker but to help with her long life dream to become an Alpha of her clan.

Lyra Black is the daughter of the Alpha Male for the Thorn Wolf pack.  Refusing to be taken as anyone's mate, at 23, Lyra is at an age to fight for the Alpha position of her clan.  It is her birthright to do so.  Wanting this dream to come true, Lyra accepts Jaden's help to train for the life and death competition and finds love in the process.

This book is without a doubt one of the best PNR books I've read. Ms. Castle has given us a story filled with suspense, humor, betrayals, action, lots of hot scenes with great sexual build up and of course, romance.
I again find my stomach full of butterflies in anticipation of the next book! I highly recommend this series!!!

Review: Dark Awakening by Kendra Leigh Castle

Dark Awakening
(Dark Dynasties #1)
by Kendra Leigh Castle
Paranormal Romance

For centuries, shapeshifting vampire Tynan MacGillivray has prowled the night as an outcast, valued only for his ferocious hunting skills. When a feud among the immortals escalates into all-out war, he is ordered by his ruthless queen to locate a Seer-a human woman with a special gift-who can secure victory for their clan. Ty's search leads him to a quiet New England town, but once he has the Seer in his grasp, her touch awakens within him a hunger like he's never known . . .

Lily Quinn has always been different. Since childhood, she's had vivid nightmares and an eerie sixth sense. When a sexy, silver-eyed stranger demands her help, Lily plunges into a new world of danger and sensuality. With Ty, she discovers sizzling passions she cannot deny and powers she cannot control. Soon, it is clear that Lily is much more than a Seer-she holds the key to ancient secrets and unthinkable destruction. But will a vampire's vow of eternal protection stop these evil forces . . . or unleash her dark destiny?

Dark Awakening was one of the books that I was very looking forward to read but when I expected greatness, it fell a little flat for me. Tynan, the hero of the book is an interesting character but his presence didn’t make me swoon, smile, or laugh. He was just okay. The heroine, on the other hand, annoyed me. I didn’t like the sudden change from Ty’s perspective to hers. I didn’t think anything from her POV was memorable and this irked me from the moment she spoke on the page. I worried a little bit and when there was another switch to Tynan’s perspective, I relax a little, only to wince once again when Lily spoke once more.

The worldbuilding is great, there are lots of terms and there is no doubt that Ms. Castle put a lot of effort into building a unique world, but I just couldn’t find myself grasping the concepts and terms like other books. I found myself repeatedly returning to the glossary to recall certain terms and when you’re terms don’t stick, then I find the reading experience to be more reading a dictionary than a story.
