ARC Review: Biting Cold by Chloe Neill

Biting Cold
by Chloe Neill
(Chicagoland Vampires # 6)

After the ups and downs we've had with this series, I have to say this was the book with the least amount of surprises!  Biting Cold picks up exactly where Drink Deep left off, with Ethan and Merit in a car heading to the midwest looking for Mallory.  Their mission was just to stop her from getting the Maleficium, the book that would unleash all evil.

But quickly the story turned more complicated and the Maleficium issue was solved a bit too fast, but in an indirect way it caused an even bigger problem.  This time Senator Tate is back and we finally get to find out more about him and what he is.  After he touches the Maleficium as Mallory is casting a spell, Tate basically clones himself.  So now there are two Tates on the loose and justice killings start happening in Chicago.

I feel that Merit did quite a bit of maturing in this book.  Having to deal with her best friend turning evil and betraying her hit her pretty hard but she still cares about her and wants to do everything possible to protect her, even if that doesn't mean forgiving her.  Ethan has come back a completely different guy, obviously now he feels Mallory's presence in his head and causes him to lose control.  Their relationship, and Ethan's attitude in particular about their relationship, got on my nerves for most of this book.  I was actually rooting for her hooking up with someone else, even if temporary.

In the end, the fact that he's changed now also brought forward an Ethan that showed a lot more emotion in and out of the bedroom.  I thought I was going to cry when he mouthed "I love you" to her.

There was also such a great cast of characters in this book: Lindsey is adorable as always, Luc was too (even if we got to see him wearing his cowboy boots...and only his cowboy boots), Catcher was also around but as expected so different as well.  And lets not forget Jeff and Gabriel.  I do like my shifters!  But other than the normal vamps, shifters and witches that we are used to reading about in this series, we also got fairies, gnomes, angels and demons.  And then of course there's Mallory.  I was so upset with her but I couldn't stay angry.  I actually started feeling bad for her and what's she had to endure.

Lets not forget the big bad guy of this book, Senator Tate.  Or the two of him that are out running around.  He's bad, he's good.  We get to find out so much more about him and it was also good to close that chapter of the series.

In a way this book felt as if it was tying up loose ends to end the series.  And then the ending came.  Not that I consider this ending  a cliffhanger but some might.  Lets just say Cadogan House will now be running differently and seeing as such.  I think it'll make for a very interesting book to come next and maybe a little bit less politics.

Favorite Quotes:

"Imagine a roaring fire in the dark depths of a Chicago winter.  Imagine the warmth of the fire against your skin -"
"I'll probably be wearing flannel pajamas," I teased, but Ethan wasn't fazed.  He leaned in, his lips at my ear.
"You'll be wearing nothing but your Cadogan medal and a smile, Sentinel."
"Is that a prediction?"
"It's a promise."

"You know what I need?" I asked.
"A chocolate fountain?" Ethan suggested. "A complete paper set of the Encyclopedia Britannica? A lifetime supply of grilled meat?"
"I like all those ideas, but I was thinking a magical spray I can use on Mallory to wash the crazy off her."
"Like Lysol for evil?" Paige asked.
"Something like that, yeah."

First Annual Chicagoland Vampires Spring Fling

About the Chicagoland Vampires Novels: Turned into a vampire against her will, twenty-eight-year-old Merit, the heroine of Chloe Neill’s New York Times bestselling series, found her way into the dark circle of Chicago’s vampire underground, where she learned there was more to supernaturals than met the eye—and more supernaturals than the public ever imagined. The sixth book in the series, BITING COLD, will be released on August 7, 2012.

Why I Love these Books: There are many reasons why I love the Chicagoland Vampires, starting with the characters.  I love everyone in these books.  Ethan is sexy as hell, Catcher makes my heart beat fast, and I love Merit!  But there's more to the story than just that.  Vampire politics are always interesting for me to read about and the way this book has the Chicago vampires divided into "houses" it's fun.  And the one thing I've learned about Chloe Neill with this series is EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.  You never know what the next turn of events will be with this series.

Did you Know?: Claudia, the queen of the fairies who resides in a Chicago park tower, rarely ventures outside her tower. She’s only ridden in cars on five occasions, and she’s never eaten in a restaurant.

Interview and Giveaway with Chloe Neill + Merit!

Maidens, we are so sad to say this but UTC After Dark has come to an end.  And what better way to finish off an amazing event than with two awesome chicks!  Without further delay, help us welcome to UTC the talented Chloe Neill along with a really cool chick, Merit from Cadogan House!

Chloe: Hi, everyone! *Waves* Thanks for having us!

Being such a successful writer and managing to still work a regular job must be very difficult. How do you manage to balance it all?!

Chloe: Thank you very much! It's definitely a challenge, but it helps that I love both jobs. It's a lot easier to make yourself get up and go to work in the morning when you like the place you have to go. Ditto for writing, which is a lot of fun when Merit is involved.

Cliffhangers... What is about them that you love to keep your fans on edge waiting for the next book?

Chloe: Personally, and although I know lots of fans feel differently, I don't feel like I use cliffhangers. But I do try to set up the next book at the end of the previous book so that fans have a sense of what's coming down the line. I like to remind them that the Chicagoland Vampires and Dark Elite books are series, and that there will be more adventures to come.

Merit maybe the major character we follow in this series. But there's a ton of other stuff that occurs outside of her.  There are political and familial plots as well. How do you keep track of it all?

Chloe: Sometimes, not very well. :) But I have a great editor and two very good continuity editors who help me keep things straight.

How would you say Merit has evolved from SOME GIRLS BITE? What have been her major hurdles?

Chloe: Merit is generally a very timid person--content to take the back seat and not be in the spotlight. I think she's become a lot braver as the books have gone along.

I love that Merit has her best friend, Mallory to lean on. It's nice to see a relationship in books that are not always romantic. How is it writing about them?

Chloe: Thanks! Like any friendship, they definitely have their ups and downs, as DRINK DEEP shows. I really hope to see them in a more solid place in the future, if Merit can get Mallory squared away.

A new species is introduced in DRINK DEEP. What was the most fun thing to write about them?

Chloe: I LOVE introducing new species, as it's a fun chance to think about the other beings that populate Chicago and how they draw on mythology and fairy tales.

Have you had the ending of Chicagoland Vampires planned out since you began writing, or do you write with plans for just one book at a time?

Chloe: I have a general sense of where I want the series to go, but the individual mysteries are plotted out with each distinct book.

Merit, your best friend, Mallory, is dating one my favorite mages. Give us some dirty details about Catcher Bell! Do you think she'll let me borrow him for a night? *waggles eyebrows* For a magic lesson of course!

Merit: Thanks! I think she would punch you for suggesting it. *Grins* She doesn't like other girls touching her things. As for the dirty details, I've seen him naked, but really tried not to look. He is Catcher, after all.

Which other heroine would you like to have the opportunity to meet and be friends with?

Merit: Maybe Eve Dallas from J.D. Robb's IN DEATH series. She's pretty kick ass. And Roarke is hot!

If you were having a night in with a nice warm glass of blood and some popcorn to throw at the TV, what 2 films would you watch?

Merit: Kill Bill and Pride & Prejudice (the A&E version).

Battle of the sexes! In a match between Jonah and yourself, who would win?

Merit: Hmm. I don't really know that one yet. I'm definitely getting some skills, but I'm not sure yet how he would measure up.

What does Catcher think of Lifetime remaking Steel Magnolia?

Merit: Oh, my god, they are? Maybe that explains all the weird stuff going on in Chicago lately. Magical spillover from his attitude issues or something. ;)

Now that you've had some time as a vampire, if you could turn back time and avoid becoming one, would you?

Merit: *Thinking* Life would be easier in some ways, but a lot less rich. So no, I wouldn't. Thanks for having us today!

Thank you so much for stopping by ladies and participating in UTC After Dark.

Review: Drink Deep by Chloe Neill

Drink Deep
by Chloe Neill
(Chicagoland Vampires # 5)
Paranormal Romance
First off let me give you a warning: if you haven't read Hard Bitten (book 4) then you might want to skip my review until you've gotten to that point in the series. I can't fully state my complains about certain things in this book without giving away a major spoiler for the previous book.

So after a very traumatic ending for most of us readers, yes a lot of tears were shed, and a long wait to find out what happens next to see how Ms. Neill will solve this dilemma, I couldn't have been more excited to get my hands on Drink Deep two weeks early.

This book has a very end-of-the-world feel. The lakes and rivers are turning black, the sky is turning red and the city of Chicago is freaking out and blaming the vampires!

Merit is still grieving after the death of Ethan, but she's been assigned to finding out what's causing these phenomena and to fix them before the humans will cause bigger problems for the vampires. Cadogan House is still under investigation by the council and their new rules are causing havok with the house vampires. And we get to meet a lot more supernatural creatures!

This is also a book of BIG CHANGES. The dynamics of the series as we know it will change in my opinion. So many things were turned upside down and inside out! Most of them had interesting twists and effects and I'm excited to see where they will lead.

But I'll tell you what my biggest issue with this book is. Merit is grieving Ethan's death, yes. It's only been two months since he died. How is it that now that she's got Jonah as a partner, trying to solve the impending end of the world, she actually starts to maybe-sorta feel something like attraction for him or flirting? She sees that he's interested! She should've put her foot down and stop that right away. I was not a fan of that. Like Catcher says, respect his memory. And this has me scared for what's to come, on a personal level.

And does Ethan come back? Wouldn't you like to know! You have to read to find out, I'm not giving anything away!

The other issue I had was the pace of the book, it felt a bit slow at the beginning, and it really got good towards the end, so much that it had me glued to the pages (and up until late in the morning).

I did cry, again, as I've started to expect towards the end of these books. But this time, it was not in the way I expected. I was utterly shocked with how things turned out in the end, and I can't help but be sad for all involved.

At least we don't get much of a cliffhanger ending. Just a bit. So I am anxiously awaiting the release of Biting Cold to embark on a new journey with Merit. Just remember, things are not what they seem, and people are not who you think!

Battle of the Covers: USA vs UK Chicagoland Vampires

Chicagoland Vampires
by Chloe Neill

It is almost that time for the year.  Yes a new book is coming out in the Chicagoland Vampires series, and hopefully it will answer all your questions!  But while you wait, how about sharing your thoughts about the different covers for this series?  This is really a no brainer for me, the US covers are so much better IMO.  I feel like the girl is just floating in the middle of nowhere in the UK covers!  What do you think??

And stay tuned... I'll be posting my review of Drink Deep at some point this weekend!

Review: Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill

Hard Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires # 3)
by Chloe Neill
Urban Fantasy

Chicago is in a bit of an uproar against vampires, who are being accused of murdering humans at raves. Ethan has a warrant for his arrest out from the CPD. Cadogan House is still under repairs. Humans are protesting outside the House.

Merit is now forced to investigate these human murders to clear Ethan's name, using Jonah as an ally, they try to infiltrate the raves to gather information, and stumble upon a drug that is making vampires crazy and brings out all their violent trades.

As usual with Chicagoland Vampires, there's a lot of vampire politics and intrigue in this book. We still see the usual suspects, Jeff, Catcher, Mallory. Mallory is actually going through a bit of an identity and adaptation crisis, but it's nice to see Merit being there for her. Catcher, can I just say... Now with the glasses we could just use him as a role play fantasy of a naughty professor ;) Lindsey and Luc and their relationship or lack of. And I just really like Jonah, I want to read more about him!

One complaint I do have, "V". Why the name? I mean if we really had to go there with the storyline, which reminds me a bit of the general idea from Kiss of Crimson by Lara Adrian, but why call it V as it has been used before as well? True Blood anyone?

I really didn't see the bad guy at the end coming, the sneaky bastard! And, yes, let's face it, I have to talk about the end. How could one little part of a book now have become the only thing I can remember happening in the whole book?!?!? I don't want to spoil what happens, yes you should be scared of it. It will probably have you crying.

Oh.My.God! I really didn't see it coming. I feel like my heart has been ripped out of my chest. And yes, I'm crying! How could Ms. Neill do this to us? I really had hopes, and then... OK, I'll try to have faith, even though I don't see a way to fix this now. *pass me a tissue so I can finish typing this review*. I don't think I can take anymore heartache from this series, and I really hope next book has a resolution in sigh, a HAPPY one. November just feels so far away now, I wish I would've waited.

Favorite Quotes:

"You wouldn't say that if he was making you levitate a 200 pound lead weight for the 67th time" - Mallory

"You can run. You can keep running to the ends of the earth. But I won’t be far behind you."
"Ethan—"
"No. I will never be far behind you.” He tipped up my chin so that I could do nothing else but look back into his eyes. “Do the things you need to do. Learn to be a vampire, to be a warrior, to be the soldier you are capable of being. But consider the possibility that I made a mistake I regret—and that I’ll continue to regret that mistake and try to convince you to give me another chance until the earth stops turning."

"No one said love was easy, Sentinel." - Ethan

Again with the damn crying!  On a side note to the author, I'm trusting that this will all be fixed in the next book!
