ARC Review: The Gravedigger's Brawl by Abigail Roux

The Gravedigger's Brawl
by Abigail Roux

Abigail Roux is what I would call one of those “cracktastic” authors whose work simply lures you in and you’re pretty much done for. I love her Cut and Run series and decided, what the hell why not read this one too? In the end, I am so glad I did! THE GRAVEDIGGER’S BRAWL is the perfect read for Halloween. It’s kind of spooky and creepy yet has the main component that fans of Roux are looking for – an amazing, believable romance between two men.

Ash and Wyatt are fantastic together and their chemistry really leaps from the pages from the get-go. Roux has this signature way of creating inviting personalities that really catch a reader’s attention until you feel as if you’re good friends with the protagonist. Add in another charming and often sarcastic male lead and you’ve got a couple that I’m rooting for! Caleb, Noah, Delilah and Ryan are more great characters that really add to the already fantastic cast of characters.

But what really sets this book apart from other M/M romance out there is the focus on urban legends, hauntings and other paranormal happenings. I worried how I would like this, but Roux makes it easy to fall right in line with the rest of the characters. Not only were the urban legends interesting themselves, but they add to the overall ambience of this story, making for an atmosphere unique to THE GRAVEDIGGER’S BRAWL.

Roux takes a risk by stepping away from what she is known for but what makes her books so cracktastic are still very much evident in the way she is able to add humor and heart to her stories. I highly recommend this book for reader’s looking for something unique and fun.

Review: Caught Running by Abigail Roux and Madeleine Urban

Caught Running
by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux

I've been saying that I want to read these two for a while and then I saw this available on audio and just took a chance and snagged it up.  Without looking at reviews, without even looking at the blurb.  Her, look at the cover!  It's a sports related m/m.  All I need to now.

What I got was one of the sweetest stories I've read in a while.  Perfectly developed and not without hurdles for the characters to go through.  It had its sad moments and its hot moments and its funny moments.  So enjoyable that I literally couldn't put it down.  Even when I had review books with past due deadlines staring me in the face!  I devoured this book, I lost sleep over this book so I could listen to just one more chapter.

Jake and Brandon went to high school together.  Jake was the jock, football star.  Brandon was the nerd.  Their paths didn't cross then.  Now they are both back in town, teaching at their old school.  Brandon gets assigned to be an assistant coach for the baseball team, where Jake is the lead coach.

Jake has to deal with his injuries and physical ailments from pushing his body as much as he did when he was young.  Brandon has to deal with having put on hold his dreams of what he really wanted to do.  And they are both gay.  Not in the closet 100%, just not openly to the people they deal with everyday at school.

While they have to fight their attraction because they don't know if the other is gay, they are just the cutest thing to watch.  Jake has a very happy and upbeat personality and I think it complements Brandon's introverted side very well.  But when Brandon lets loose he's a force to be reckoned with.  All sexy prowling animal going for what he wants.  Loved, loved, loved!

Review: Divide & Conquer by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux

Divide & Conquer
(Cut & Run #4)
by Madeleine Urban & Abigail Roux

Each and every book in this series feels different than the one before. In FISH & CHIPS there’s quite a bit of emphasis on the assignment that Ty and Zane are thrust into. But in DIVIDE & CONQUER, I feel like the crimes that have been happening all over Baltimore come second to the emotional storm that festers between Ty and Zane.

If you’ve read the last book, Ty reveals something huge at the most inopportune moment, causing Zane to really stumble back and think upon his words. In this book, we finally see Zane’s reaction or, in reality, his non-action. Zane is known for his analytical mind. He is always processing things mentally, but no matter how much or how long he thinks about Ty’s words, he’s unable to conjure up a suitable response. I can’t say that I was frustrated with this part because I feel like I know Zane’s personality and he isn’t the type of person to simply saying something he doesn’t mean. His constant thinking on this subject is SO in character for him that I can’t be mad at him, though I would have loved to hear those special words stem from his mouth.

While bombings are happening all over Baltimore and hitting several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, Ty and Zane are caught in the midst of it all. In a sense, I felt like the bombings in the suspense subplot of the book also mimicked the several jaw-droppings “bombs” that Urban and Roux dropped in the character/romantic storyline.

When Ty’s oldest and best friend, Nick visits him along with the rest of Ty’s recon team, Zane realizes that there is someone else out there who cares about Ty as much as he does. However, as more events transpire, Zane doesn’t know just how close Ty and Nick really are...

Urban and Roux end this book with A KILLER ENDING. It gutted me, spinning me off into an emotional breakdown. My heart lurched in my chest. I just don’t see how this is going to work unless one of them breaks. Urban and Roux fuse so much passion and love in their books that I’m surprised that more people haven’t found out about it yet. Regardless of the fact that this is a relationship between two men, this series is the most passionate, emotionally-inspiring romance I’ve read in a long time. I can only hope that Ty and Zane can resolve this mess and show all that love really does conquer all.

Review: Fish & Chips by Abigail Roux

Fish & Chips
(Cut & Run #3)
by Madeleine Urban & Abigail Roux

FISH & CHIPS opens with Ty and Zane beating the seven shades of shit out of each other. Immediately, I am grinning from ear-to-ear because I know I am sitting down to read more entertaining scenes such as this one when I’m reading a Cut & Run book.

After Ty and Zane go at it for a couple more rounds, they are called in for duty. Their next case is a doozy which involves chest waxing, eyebrow shaping, massages, spray tan, fake tattoos and the works. Why, you ask? Well because Ty and Zane will be posing as an openly gay couple who are involved in an international smuggling ring on a Christmas cruise in the Caribbean. Ty must work on his British accent, and work even harder to pull off the ridiculous hair color he is sporting on this case.

Ty and Zane are not too thrilled about the prospects of this mission, and they soon find out that more parties are involved, making this assignment far more difficult and exponentially dangerous. After several attempts on their lives, the guys finally take matters into their own hands.

FISH & CHIPS focuses a lot more on the suspense plot, but the romance is still very much there. This storyline allows the romance to bloom and I think Urban and Roux did a fantastic job of incorporating a strong romance awhile still keeping focus with the mystery aspect of the story. There was a great balance.

I am absolutely hooked onto this series! Ty and Zane have me wrapped around their fingers. Every moment is entertaining and I can only imagine the kind of trouble they will get into next in DIVIDE & CONQUER.

Favorite Quote:

“That’s my gun,” Ty said in an offended voice. “They hid my gun in the sex toys? That’s not right, man.”

My Ty: Jensen Ackles

My Zane: Eric Bana

Many thanks to Under the Covers for hosting me on my very first Riptide Publishing virtual book tour!

Hi Abigail! We’re so excited to have you at Under the Covers today!

Hi! Thank you for having me!

Many of my friends (including myself) who have read your Cut & Run series have said that it is their favorite M/M series ever! How does it feel hearing that your characters have a special place in reader’s hearts?

It’s astounding to me. Very surreal. It’s not something I’m always conscious of, and if I let myself think too hard about it, I think I would get overwhelmed by just how far and wide this series has reached. Right now, I’m just happy that I can keep writing these two characters that I love so much.

What do you think makes Ty and Zane so compatible? What is the one characteristic that makes Ty attracted to Zane and vice versa?

I think they’re compatible because they’ve learned to deal with each other’s quirks. They’re nothing alike, but they both have a sense of humor, and that can make the biggest difference in the world. They tolerate the faults of the other because they’re blinded by love. If I have to break it down to one characteristic, I would say that Ty is attracted to Zane’s steadfastness. He’s a rock in the middle of a choppy sea. Zane is an anchor for Ty, who has been adrift all his life. And for Zane, he looks at Ty’s ability to roll with the punches and keep on going, and he thinks it’s Ty’s greatest strength. Ty is the only thing in his life that’s been able to pull him out of that steady, solitary shell, and he’s learning to enjoy life because of it. Their strengths complement each other, as do their weaknesses.

What can you tell us about Nick’s book? Will it be full length or novella?

Oh, Nick’s book! It will be full length, and it will be glorious. There’s been a lot of speculation over who he’ll be paired with, and all I have to say to that is ‘NO COMMENT!’ followed by evil laughter. The tentative title is Rogue’s Gallery. It will take place in Boston, and revolve around a case he’s working. I’m really excited about it, I can’t wait to get started on it.

What can readers expect in the latest installment of the series, STARS & STRIPES?

This book is a sort of reckoning. Ty and Zane are both going to face some of the things they’ve been avoiding for a long time, as a couple and as individuals. We’re going to meet Zane’s family, as well as revisit with Ty’s. We’re going to get some hints about Ty’s past that might be unsettling for Zane and for readers. And you’re going to find a family member that you hate more than Earl!

What are you working on right now? What is its expected release date?

Right now I’m working on Book 7 of the series, with the occasional jaunt into editing and rewriting my next release. It’s called Gravedigger’s Brawl, and it will come out in October. It is the most evil, cursed, haunted thing I’ve ever worked on. It killed some laptops, killed some friend’s electronics. So I hurried through that! Another one I have in the works is a treasure hunt that should be a lot of fun, but no release dates on those yet.

The Cut & Run series was written by you and Madeleine Urban yourself for years. Now that you are continuing the series yourself, how has your writing process and schedule changed?

The process for me is much the same, only now I’m sitting here talking to myself instead of someone else! I approach the books the same way, but it’s actually much easier writing solo. I can plot so much faster without laying it all out for a partner, and the dialogue and inner conflict comes so naturally. The schedule is also easier, because it’s just me. The only conflict I have to worry about it when my daughter flies through the room, so I can work at my own pace instead of playing solitaire for hours waiting until schedules align.

How many more books do you have planned for Ty and Zane?

I’m still set at 9 total, which means three more after this release. Ty and Zane’s story arc will be done at 9, and the series will have a satisfying conclusion. That’s not to say I wouldn’t be open to writing more of Ty and Zane, if the right plots and ideas came along, and if it felt right to do more. I’d rather go out with people begging for more than to have people sick of them in the end.

Will their secret relationship ever be revealed to anyone in the bureau?

That’s a sneaky plot question, but I think it’s fairly obvious to everyone that they can’t stay hidden forever. It’s not a matter of will they, it’s just a matter of when and how, and what will the aftermath be. It’s going to happen.

Do you find writing more challenging now that you don’t have a partner to bounce ideas off of or get a second opinion?

Not at all. I was always a solo writer as well, so it’s nothing new for me. When I get an idea that I’m excited about, I do like to tell my friends about it and get a little bouncy. So nothing’s really changed in that aspect.

If Ty were to describe Zane in one word, what would it be? Similarly, if Zane was describing Ty in a word, what would he choose?

Ty: Solid.
Zane: Moving.

If you only had twenty dollars in your purse, what would you buy?

Gas. I am always fighting the urge to get up and go, and if I had nothing to lose, I’d do it. Get up and go and see where you end up, find something new and exciting, start over fresh.

Quick-fire questions!
Coffee or tea?
Both are gross!
Print or ebook? Ebook. I love print books, but ebooks are so easy to take with you.
Sunrise or sunset? Sunset. I only see sunrise if I stayed up all night.
Boxers or briefs? Briefs!

ARC Review: Stars & Stripes by Abigail Roux

Stars & Stripes
(Cut & Run #6)
by Abigail Roux

Just when I thought I couldn’t love this series any more than I already do, Roux gives us a fantastic, heartfelt, yet adventure-filled ride with STARS & STRIPES! This book blew my mind from beginning to end. Just 30 pages into this book, Roux had me laughing out loud and also crying with the amount of heartbreak. If there is one M/M couple out there who has my heart, it’s Ty and Zane. The trials and tribulations they have experienced by being together are finally brought up in STARS & STRIPES. Readers who have been following this series will finally get what they have been praying for: Ty and Zane come out to their parents. But the reveal isn’t an easy one.

Their parents are just now finding out that their children are gay and they don’t always take it well. Some are more accepting than others and that just warms my heart, but at the same time, there are a few who simply can’t stand the fact that their son is gay and it just breaks my heart to read about this happening to my two favorite guys.

Added to that stress is the fact that Zane’s father has been shot in Texas. So Zane takes a trip back home where he hasn’t been in a while to try and figure out what has happened. It turns out that more is going on because dangerous animal predators, the Benal tigers are going missing from their shelters. Panic arises in Texas as these tigers continue to be taken.

In comes Ty, providing a helping hand (even though one hand is broken), yet nothing can separate Ty from Zane. They are in it together and when Zane is feeling the wrath from his mother, Ty is there to remind him that he is not alone.

STARS & STRIPES was a thrill to read from the very first page. Roux seems to have taken this series in stride and doesn’t seem like she has any intentions of slowly down anytime soon. It was perfect, the ideal blend of the wickedly entertaining hysterics and so much passion and love. So much.

Worthy of note is the Roux’s ability to write sex scenes. I’ve read so many sex scenes both of the M/M genre and not, but none of them can truly compare to the ones we’ve seen in this series and particularly this book. Roux fuses rough, dirty rutting with passionate embraces and lingering kisses. It’s as if Roux possesses a secret ingredient that she adds into these scenes to make them more delicious. Whatever it is, I hope she had a hoard of it in her keeping. It’s gold!

STARS & STRIPES is easily one of my favorite reads of 2012 and Ty and Zane are my favorite M/M couple ever. Roux just writes on a higher calibre and I think STARS & STRIPES tops even that!

Favorite Quote #1:

“Is that a mirror in your pocket, baby?” he said to Clancy with a goofy leer. “’Cause I can sure see myself in your pants.”

 Favorite Quote #2:

“How is it that you love cats so much and hate all other forms of animal?”
Ty frowned. “I don’t hate all other animals.”
“Horses. Dogs. Chipmunks.”
“They’re twitchy, Zane. And chipmunks have shifty eyes.”
“Moths?”
“They have erratic flight patterns!”
