Author Override: Karin Tabke

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

Sexiest Part Of A Man? by Karin Tabke
First I just wanted to say, thank you to Francesca for inviting me here today!

So, sexiest part of a man?

Oh, I love a nice hard chest with defined pecs, washboard abs, and that little love trail pointing to his happy place. Give me deep soulful eyes, lips so hot they’d melt ice in Antarctica, and hair so thick and soft it would make a mink jealous. Give me tall, give me built and give me hung, but without a steel-trap brain and a sense of humor that makes me laugh tears, you can have the giftwrap.

We chicks dig men with command presence; it’s why there are so many law enforcement and military heroes. Command presence is inherent. It’s not something that can be taught at the Police Academy or in boot camp. One either has it or one doesn’t, and when one fakes it, it comes across as being an asshole.

It brings me back to cops and military in the leading hero roles, either active or retired, having that background shows up front what kind of man we’re dealing with. A man who can save the world and us at the same time.

Even if we can kick the bad guy’s ass, it’s damn sexy and heart-pounding thrilling knowing our hero can save the day with one hand while he’s got us clasped up close and personal to his chest with the other.

Give me a man with command presence, a brain to work it, and a sense of humor that makes me laugh until I’m crying, and I’m his. I’m not going to lie and say I could do without all that sexiness gift wrapped, I’m a girl and I like those kinds of things, but it will be that brain, and the way he makes me smile that will keep me coming back for more.

When I write heroes they always have that innate command presence. They are intelligent and they can make me and the heroine laugh. My husband possesses all three of these qualities, so in affect, I write what I know.

In the Blood Moon Rising trilogy, my heroes Rafael Vulkaisin and Lucien Mondragon are not law enforcement or military, they are lycan pack alphas. Trying to keep those two in check is like trying to bottle lightening. But I have a lot of fun trying. And while these twin brothers are as alpha as an alpha can be, they are literally as different as night and day, and yet true to who they are: born Alphas. Being alpha is sexy, but sexiness goes deeper than saving the day. Sexy men have emotions and while they aren’t crybabies, they are brave enough to love. To protect what they love and nurture what they love so that it doesn’t die.

As I’m writing this I’m smiling. I love writing about men. I love how they work, how they think and how they act. But at the end of the day, the one that got me and the ones who intrigue me the most are smart, funny, and can stare down a bullet.

What about you? What’s the sexiest part of man to you?
Just Released

The coming of the Blood Moon will lead two Lycan packs into war, spur two rival brothers into conflict, and spark an act of vengeance so evil that its effects will be felt for generations.

One woman stands at the center of it all...
After years of waiting, the Blood Law is at last avenged. Lycan Alpha Lucien Mondragon takes revenge on his brother, Rafael. Lucien is poised to slay Rafael's life mate, the Lycan/Slayer half-breed Falon- but cannot complete the kill. For Falon's mystical powers and fiery nature awaken a heart Lucien thought long dead. Instead of ending her life, Lucien defiantly marks Falon as his own, tormenting his brother to insanity and spurning Rafael's blood thirst for his own revenge.
Though terrified by the savage Lucien, Falon finds herself inexplicably drawn to his primal rage and strength by a desire she cannot resist. Torn between the true love she has for Rafael and the burning hunger she holds for Lucien, Falon knows that the will of her heart will lead her to her destined life mate. But it may also doom the Alpha brothers-and the Lycan race-to extinction...

ARC Review: Bloodright by Karin Tabke

(More like 3.5 feathers)
Bloodright
(Blood Moon Rising #2)
by Karin Tabke

First off, I will say that I was a huge fan of the first book. Karin Tabke pulls no punches in this passionate and animalistic erotic romance. What I loved about the first book is its dark and sinful alpha men, Rafael and Lucien and the lone woman who stands between them.

BLOODRIGHT continues off where BLOOD LAW ended. Falon now belongs to the dark and dangerous alpha of the Mondragon clan, Lucien, her former lover’s brother. Things are a complete mess in the beginning. Falon wants nothing to do with Luca and at every turn, she makes it known that her heart lies with his brother and not with Luca. Feeling as if his pride has been tackled by a raging bull, Luca doesn’t take this rejection lightly. He’s an alpha and he also makes that known to Falon. There is no way he is backing down. She belongs to him now. And that is that.

However, Falon is also an alpha and she doesn’t yield when Luca demands her submission. What I liked about Falon in the first book and later on in this book was the fact that despite standing between two alpha men, she isn’t overshadowed by their hard personalities. She definitely holds her own and in turn, gains the respect of both the Vulkusin and Mondragon packs.

I have mixed feelings about this book because though it holds the same passion and the same intensity as the first book, I thought there were a lot of rough patches between Falon and Luca. Readers have already fallen in love with Rafa in the last book, so I was eager to see how Tabke would accomplish the hard task of making Falon love Luca just as much as Rafa in this book. At first, I didn’t feel it. Luca is the exact opposite of Rafa. Where Rafa is honor and light, Luca is torment and darkness. Luca believes that Rafa, his brother, his own blood betrayed him when he stole the life of his chosen one, Mara all those years ago. It’s why the bloodright works now because an eye for an eye means that Luca now has the power to take, or kill Rafa’s chosen one. Instead, he takes his brother’s lover, Falon into his bed.

The first sex between Falon and Luca is a hard one to read. Full of anger and without love, it made me pause because I can’t say I enjoyed it. I have no problem with rough sex, but this wasn’t about that. This was about Luca removing Rafa’s claim on Falon’s body and marking her as his own.

Later sex scenes also gave me another reason to pause. I have read many erotic romances and some of them have pushed my limits, however none of them really stand next to how I felt about this one. The wolf smexing was not to my liking. I get why the author did it. It fits the story – Luca and Falon are passionate wolves and their animalistic urges are natural, but it was just a little weird for me. That awkwardness took some of the heat from the love scenes for me.

Action like you’ve never seen before happens in the latter half of this book. Tabke really kicks things up, ending at a great time that will make readers want to know what happens next. Overall, BLOODRIGHT was another great read by Karin Tabke. I could just do without the wolf smexing next time.

Reviews: Guns and Roses Anthology

Guns and Roses
by Lori Armstrong, Allison Brennan, Josie Brown, Toni McGee Causey, Sylvia Day, Laura Griffin, Lorelei James, Sophie Littlefield, Roxanne St. Claire and Karin Tabke

Let me start out by saying that I have not read less than half of the authors in this anthology before picking this up, so I was very excited to get to sample some new authors!  This anthology is more on the mystery side than the romantic suspense, even though there is a romantic undertone to all the stories.  Just don't go in expecting a lot of hot and heavy action.  I'm giving the anthology in general a rating of 3 stars but there were some stories that stood out, which make this anthology 100% worthwhile.  So lets break it down.

Pick Your Poison by Roxanne St. Claire - 3 Stars
The story was cute.  I see it's part of the Bullet Catchers series, which is a security firm basically.  They are hired to serve as bodyguards to a politician but then get fired when they actually do their job on what seems to be a false alarm.  Benjamin Youngblood is the agent that had followed a hunch and lost the client so he gets fired.  In order to get his job back he wants to prove that he was right and keeps digging into the case.  Then he stumbles across Callie Parrish and the pieces start to fall into place, now all he has to do is get the proof.  This was pretty good until the ending then it got a little silly.  But still very entertaining read.

Nightfall by Laura Griffin - 3 Stars
This story was extremely short.  When it comes to stories that short is really hard to form an opinion on how good they are, especially when you don't already know the characters from somewhere else.    Basically Holly is at the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong vehicle.  She is mistaken for a drug trafficking player and crashes her van loaded with flowers that she was supposed to deliver for a wedding.  Now she's in the middle of an investigation and she doesn't even know it.  I had a few eye-rolling moments with this story, especially when she gets rescued by a perfect stranger and when he leaves her alone at his house, she thinks its ok for her to "borrow" his car to make her flower delivery.

Above Reproach by Allison Brennan - 3.5 Stars
Now this story I liked a lot better.  There's a lot less romance and it's a grittier story.  Not all the fluff and humor.  A serial rapist is escalating his game and has now killed his first victim.  Selena Black is the detective that has been after this guy for a while and she KNOWS who it is.  Except he's a highly respected member of the community.  She makes mistakes that can cost them the investigation and her past comes poking its little ugly head as well.  But all I could think of after I finished this story was that I wouldn't mind reading more about her and her surgeon boyfriend, Gabriel, because he seems dangerous and dirty, and I would love to know what happens next!

Dead Flowers by Lori Armstrong - 4.5 Stars
I am kicking myself in the butt right now for not starting to read the Julie Collins series sooner.  I have no clue where this short story falls in the timeline but I can say that Julie is my kind of heroine.  Kick ass and headstrong.  I mean, she starts off the story by describing how much she hates Valentine's Day, she can drink and she even watches Myth Busters!  I gotta know more about this PI!  She's struggling with following up on a couple of PI cases where she's dealing with cheaters and drawing comparisons with her own relationship, and thinking her boyfriend is cheating on her.  I kept going back and forth between wanting him to be found guilty so she could get it on with her PI partner, or wanting it all to have a sweet ending.  And I won't tell you which way it goes.  I will be reading the rest of her books hopefully soon because I love Julie!

Blood and Roses by Sylvia Day - 3.5 Stars
This was the hottest story of the bunch, and even though it wasn't very long I think the story was developed very well.  Anastasia goes back to her hometown following up on a lead for her job as an insurance investigator.  See, some major jewels were stolen and she knows her mother was the mastermind behind the heist.  Of course being back in town somehow translated into being back in Jake Monroe's bed.  He's a cop, she comes from a family of thieves.  Even though she mostly tries to do good, sometimes she lets things go.  And this is why she thought they could never work as a couple.  Jake though has no plans of letting her walk out of his life again.

Rebel Rose by Karin Tabke - 3 Stars
I started out this story thinking I would love it.  I have read this author before, in this genre, as short stories, and loved them all.  This one fell a bit flat though.  There's been a murder at a frat house party and Detective Cash Cantrell is called in to investigate.  The murder is very similar to a case years ago.  He only has the victim's friend to help in the investigation.  And he's attracted to her.  Not only there's an age difference, but he's black and she's white.  As much as he wants to fight what's going on between them she is helping with the investigation.  The mystery or suspense was ok but the rest fizzled out for me.

A Punishing Night by Sophie Littlefield - 3 Stars
Going back to college stories, there's a dead body, male in an all female dorm.  Joe Bashir is going back as a detective in the case after having dropped out of this same college a while back.  I was scared there would be another cop-college girl romantic interest in this book so I was happy to see it wasn't.  While Joe is investigating, his knowledge of school rituals from before comes into play, even though he was originally called in due to his heritage and language skills.  Muslim hate crimes rendered Joe's dad pretty much an invalid, affected his own life and now have again shown up in this case.  The romance in this story doesn't even come into play until the end of the story but it was a nice addition.

The Housewife Assassin's Bloody Valentine by Josie Brown - No Rating
I couldn't get into this story and stopped about halfway through.

King of Hearts by Lorelei James - 4 Stars
This is a Rough Riders short story.  A bad day in the life of Cam McKay as a cop.  He's called in to the scene of a murder/suicide on Valentine's Day.  He went to school with the husband.  They seemed like such a happy couple just days before.  Cam has to deal with the parents, the investigation, and the fact that the reason why this all might've happened is because the husband never recovered mentally after coming back from war.  A lot of the issues hit home for Cam.  But at the end of the day when he gets to go home, the love of his family pulls him through.

Bobbie Faye's Whacked-Out, No-Good, Really Sucky, Hot Mess of a Wedding by Toni McGee Causey - 3 Stars
I can just let that title speak for itself! LOL This story was funny and a bit whacky but it was enjoyable if you like your heroines a bit eccentric, who can't go anywhere without a gun, even their own wedding, and who almost everyone is scared of.

Review: Men Out of Uniform by Maya Banks, Karin Tabke and Sylvia Day

3.5 Feathers

Men Out of Uniform
by Maya Banks, Karin Tabke and Sylvia Day
(Shadow Stalkers # 2)
Romantic Suspense

Now who doesn't love a hot men out of uniform? Especially if they're Paul Marron!! This cover caught my eye a while back and I've been waiting for it to release since.

Soul Possession by Maya Banks
3 Feathers

Maya Banks is a favorite author of mine, which is why I'm surprised I didn't connect with this story as much as I thought I would. Don't get me wrong it was hot, and the plot is ok, but there was no connection for me with the characters.

We have Jessie Callahan, a waitress at a bar where two HOT cops have been hanging out for a while now. Rick and Truitt are partners and when they first see Jessie they're both extremely attracted to her. So they decide to share her and they've been trying for a long time now to flirt and get her to go home with both of them.

Things come to a head when she gets fired, they have one HOT night together, and then everything goes to hell. Someone turns up dead, there's a serial killer on the loose, and Truitt and Rick decide they want to be in a relationship with her, yes, at the same time.

I didn't like the resolution of the serial killer story, it felt a bit rushed and incomplete. The sex is as usual hot, obviously be prepared for menage, and everything it entails. ;) Steamy, and it worked for me!

Wanted by Karin Tabke
4.5 Feathers

This was my favorite story of this anthology. Don't ask me why, but it was extremely hot, sensual, the characters worked well together. I think especially because they had a history together. One thing I didn't necessarily get was how it was so difficult for him to find her all those years ago when he was supposedly in love.

So Sophia gives her virginity to Colin, the popular jock, the night of his graduation. She's been in love with him forever. After that her family gets threatened and she has to marry a mobster and pretty much has disappeared since. But she never forgot Colin.

Now she's on the run from her husband, who has a price on her head so she won't testify against him. Colin, a detective now, is sent to escort her back to New York so she can testify an din the meantime has to protect her.

There's enough action in this book, and both kinds of it. Very steamy... on the floor, in the bathtub, on the bed. Everywhere!

Taking the Heat by Sylvia Day
4 Feathers

Layla Creed is in the witness protection program because she has to testify to bring down a cartel. On a recent trip to Mexico with her friend, they ran into trouble and where in the middle of cartel business.

After an attempt on her life she ends up with a most unexpected person protecting her. Brian Simmons. Her brothers best friend and the man she fell in love with at 16. He is also the man she left because she couldn't deal with him putting his life in danger for his career.

Brian has never let go of his love for Layla and now wants nothing but keep her with him, but first he will have to keep her safe from some very important people that need her dead.

These two have chemistry. They know each others' bodies very well and from the get-go they knew and accepted the fact that while he's protecting her they would be together.

I wish I had read some other Shadow Stalkers books as I would've liked some background into other characters we see in this book, but the main one I liked was Rachel, and how she showed Layla how she could be ok with being with Brian, dangerous career and all.

Another hot story with a little bit less action during the whole story, but plenty of it under the covers.

Review: Bad to the Bone by Karin Tabke

Bad to the Bone
by Karin Tabke
(Wicked Reads # 1)
Erotica Romance

I think I'm not the only when I say that a fantasy of a hot cop pulling you over and then having his wicked way with you sounds VERRA NICE! No? Is it just me?

Well, that's how this story starts out, which caught me a bit off guard and wondering if I should be liking it or thinking this guy was completely insane! Of course they were role playing, even though he is a real cop, he's been sort of, not dating but more of a booty call.

Olivia Connor was married to a cop, and he died a year ago. She started seeing Vander, a local police officer who has also known her husband, even though they weren't friends. Vander is the epitome of the bad boy, rides a motorcycle, doesn't "date" women, and he is oh so deliciously bad in the bedroom.

This short story is HOT from beginning to end! Characters are very likeable, and I was definitely liking Vander a whole lot! Can I take him home to play?

Interview and Giveaway with Karin Tabke!

Helloo Maidens! Please join me in welcoming Paranormal Romance author, Karin Tabke! Ms. Tabke has just released the first book of her new paranormal romance trilogy called Blood Law for Berkley Heat. You can find my fangirl review of Blood Law here.

Karin Tabke is a full-time writer who dapples in various genres, including paranormal romantic suspense under the pen name, Karin Harlow and historical and contemporary romance. You can find more information on Karin Tabke and her books here.
UTC: First off, thank you so much for stopping by today! We appreciate your time and are thrilled to have you here to talk about your new Blood Moon Trilogy! Lets get started and get to know you better! You write paranormal romance, paranormal romantic suspense, contemporary and even historical (medieval) romance! Do you find it difficult to make the necessary changes in writing style between genres? How do you make sure your “voice” remains distinctly yours?
First off, thank you, Ann for the invite!  Im really excited to hang out here today! Ok, so to answer your first question, no.  I dont find it hard to make any changes when I switch subgenres.  My contemporary voice and historical voice while distinct are as much a part of me as my arms and legs.  I can speak with either at any given time.  I dont have to make sure my voice remains distinctly mine, not anymore.  Its ingrained, part of my writer fabric now.  All I do now, is hone it.
UTC: Blood Law is the first book in your Blood Moon Trilogy. How did the idea of this series come to be?
I was at the movies with hubby watching Rise of the Lycan.  I had one of those ah hah! moments. The next night we were watching Sons of Anarchy and then my head blew up with the idea!  Hubby was sweet enough to clean up the mess.
UTC: The Blood Law is a crucial aspect to the Blood Moon series and is essentially, the notion of an eye for an eye. What inspired this law?
The Bibles eye for an eye.  Lycan are primal.  In nature, wolves are primal and their laws are simple: respect the hierarchy and only the strong survive.
UTC: I adore your main lead characters in Blood Law! What do you love most about your heroine, Falon and your hero, Rafael?
I love Falons complexity.  There is so much more to her than what you see.  I love her natural curiosity, her wonder, and her love for Rafael.  Rafe, what can I say about him that hasnt been said?  He is ruled by honor and duty, but at his core, it is his primal self that overrules all law, lycan or man made.  He is the good son who loves as fiercely as he hates.  Hes torn between his honor and responsibility to his pack, his blood ties to his brother, and his fierce love for Falon.  He cannot have one with out sacrificing the others.
UTC: What was it about the Lycans that intrigued you so much to write a trilogy on them?
Their badassness.  Lycan are the misunderstood rogues of the paranormals.  I love that they are so basic in their primal simplicity. And since I write alphas, what better canvas to paint the ultimate alpha?
UTC: Why did you decide to write a paranormal romance series? Is there a genre you prefer to write over others?
I didnt pick paranormal romance, it picked me!  I love writing love stories, period.  My favorite genre is the one Im currently writing.  I wrote WANTED, my hot cop contemp novella in the upcoming MEN OUT OF UNIFORM with authors Maya Banks and Sylvia Day in between ENEMY MINE (Karin Harlow paranormal suspense) and writing BLOOD RIGHT, and I grinned the entire time I wrote it. So, really, I love the characters.
UTC: The covers to Blood Law and Blood Right are downright delicious! Did you have a say in the cover art? What was your reaction when you saw it for the first time?
I know arent they just yummy?  Love them!  Yes, I did have a say.  My editor and I talked early on about our vision.  I really wanted the covers to tell a story. Same models for all three books.  The first cover (you can see it on the amazon kindle page) was gorgeous but it didnt convey the passion between Rafe and Falon I had hoped for.  They knocked the second try out of the park!  I love the BLOOD RIGHT cover and as soon as I can show the BLOOD MOON RISING cover, I will!
UTC: Out of all the heroines you have written, who would you say is most like you?
Oh no!  Ok, so every one of my heroines has a little piece of me, thats how I roll!  But, most like me?  Frankie in SKIN and Jax in ENEMY LOVER.  That said, I am not nearly as brave as either of them!  But they have mouths on them and dont back down, two of my better or worse traits depending on which side you happen to be when experiencing them.
UTC: What can we expect for your next instalment in the Blood Moon trilogy?
BLOOD RIGHT February 2012!  Also, the second book in my Karin Harlow L.O.S.T. series, ENEMY MINE, is releasing Aug  11.  Im excited about this book too!
UTC: What can we expect from your upcoming short story "Wanted" in the "Men Out of Uniform" coming out in October?
A fun, steamy romp!  I loved writing Colin, my hero in that story. While alpha through and through, he has a sense of humor, I loved!  Its good, really good.
UTC: Tell us, what's next for Karin Tabke?
After I wrap up BLOOD RIGHT, Ill begin BLOOD MOON RISING, and then its back to those sexy Blood Sword Legacy knights!
Thank you again, Karin for stopping by Under the Covers! We appreciate your time and will be eagerly awaiting the next instalment of the Blood Moon Trilogy, Blood Right!

Review: Blood Law by Karin Tabke

Blood Law (Blood Moon Trilogy # 1)
by Karin Tabke
Paranormal Romance

MY FANTASY CAST

WARNING! This review will contain squealing, fan-girl obsessions and perhaps a happy dance!

Blood Law is one of the best books I’ve read this year! I’m not quite sure what I was expecting when I picked up this book. Having never read anything by Karin Tabke before, I did not have any real expectations. But once I opened this book, I was completely blown away by the attention to detail, the complex laws they abide by and the compelling characters! If I wasn’t a fan of Ms. Tabke before, I certainly am now! I LOVE THE BLOOD MOON SERIES!

I will admit, Ms. Tabke starts up early in the beginning, detailing the Blood Law and past events that have altered how Rafael and his brother, Lucien live their lives now. It was a little confusing at first because you are thrust into her world and are bombarded with a lot of information all at once. But once you get accustomed to the initial shock and the names settle in, you are right on track with her!

There are so many good things about this book! First off, the characters come off the page, grip you by your shirt and take you on a ride from beginning to end. And when I say that, I mean that Rafael and his heroine, Falon are the most compelling characters I’ve read in a long time. Rafael is the alpha of his pack and he is as ruthless as can be. There is something darkly alluring about him, where he uses fear to his advantage. At first, he refuses to accept Falon as his chosen one but despite his hardened soul, he still cares deeply for her.

Falon is my new favourite heroine! I love her! She was cunning and funny, sexy and sweet! She was the perfect counterpart to Rafe. But perhaps the best thing about her was that, she was a strong, independent heroine, one who didn’t rely on the hero to save her from her own troubles. Falon possesses some special abilities, such as increased strength and speed, but that wasn’t what made her stand out as a heroine. It’s her internal strength that really shone through for me. Falon simply kicked ass.

Another favourite character was Lucien. As Rafe was day, Luca was night and I loved that comparison. The juxtaposition in characters was clearly showcased in their confrontations and I loved every moment of this action-packed book. So much occurs and it was as if a movie was playing inside my head. I completely devoured this book and am now feeling withdrawals because I want the next book so badly!
