Author Override: Jennifer Ashley

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

Jennifer Ashley

Thanks for having me on the blog today! I’ll do a giveaway at the end.

I’ve been asked to talk today about what the soundtrack to Mate Claimed might be. Hmm. That’s something I had to think about.

Let me say a little bit about the book first:

Mate Claimed is the story of Eric Warden, the leader of his Shiftertown, and Iona Duncan, a half Shifter who’s been keeping her Shifter side secret.

Eric, a Feline Shifter, knows that half-Shifter wildcat Iona is passing for human, living without a Collar in the human world. He also knows that if she does not acknowledge her Shifter nature and her mating hunger, it could kill her.

Iona finds the mysterious and dangerous Eric, a wildcat and leader of his Shiftertown, haunting her, but she vows never to take the Collar, fearing backlash against her mother and sister for hiding the fact that she's Shifter. But Eric is a compelling Shifter male, and Iona's hunger calls to him.

The Soundtrack:

The first thing that sprung to mind was a theme song for Graham, a Lupine Shifter (new to the series), who has been forced to move in to Eric’s Shiftertown. He’s made it clear he wants to take over, and Eric has his hands full with him. The perfect song for Graham is Bad to the Bone, by George Thoroughgood.

A great song for Iona and Eric is (Kissed You) Goodnight a song by the country group Gloriana. Eric and Iona would do more than kiss (!) but it fits them, and it’s a lovely song. If you haven’t heard it (it’s very new), find it and give it a listen.

A song that conveys the heat between them is Smooth (Santana and Rob Thomas). That’s a hot, sexy song, and I can see Eric and Iona dirty dancing to it.

Another very hot song with emotional intensity is Crush by the Dave Matthews Band. I vividly picture Eric and Iona when I hear this song.

Last is a song for Tiger (you’ll meet him in Mate Claimed), who will be the hero of the next release, Tiger Magic—Iris, by the Goo Goo Dolls. I just love that song. So heart-wrenching! And it fits Tiger very well.

Grab a player, listen to songs, and enjoy the book!

Best,
Jennifer Ashley

ARC Review: Mate Claimed by Jennifer Ashley

Mate Claimed
(Shifters Unbound #4)
by Jennifer Ashley

MATE CLAIMED is book four in the Shifters Unbound series by Jennifer Ashley. This book explores Iona’s story. Iona is a half-Shifter, living without a Collar in the human world. The danger of living without any real knowledge of her mating hunger and Shifter side can very well kill her if she isn’t careful. So, Eric Warden, wildcat and leader of his own Shiftertown is now taking Iona into his own hands to care for her. Iona fears the repercussions of revealing herself as half Shifter. She believes that her mother and sister will no longer accept her, but is she willing to keep their good faith for the cost of her life?

This book is sexually potent, filled to the brim with the perfect amount of sexual tension and chemistry. As Eric peruses Iona, she becomes more and more pliant as his seduction turns her into goo.

Although I didn’t feel like that book held too much flashy action, there was still a good amount of it to keep me entertained. Ashley’s writing style is smooth and consistent, exploring the world she is expertly created and setting up the next book of the series well.

Both characters seemed mediocre in my eyes, but by the end of the book, I felt like they had grown exponentially. That’s a testament to Ashley’s writing. She is able to create endearing characters and make you care about them in a short amount of time.

Tiger is the perfect example of this. Introduced later in MATE CLAIMED, he still captured my interests and has me desperately pining for the next book! It will be a good day when I have TIGER MAGIC in my hands!

Interview and Giveaway with Jennifer Ashley!

Holla Maidens! Please help us welcome back historical romance author, Jennifer Ashley! Ashley writes some of the best historical (and paranormal) romances out there so if you haven't checked out her HIGHLAND PLEASURES series, then here is your chance! Don't forget to stay updated on the latest info on her website here. Now please help us welcome back, Ms. Ashley!
Jennifer Ashley

Thanks for coming back to UTC! It's a pleasure to have you. Eleanor Ramsey is one of my favourite heroines of yours. What quality should every heroine have?

Heroines, imho, need to be strong enough to stand up to that uber-powerful, romantic hero we pair them with. The stronger the hero, the stronger the heroine. And she needs to love him to pieces, even if she believes for half the book that he's bad for her. In the end, they both know that they're stronger together. I love strong women!

Hart is one hot highlander! I know that a lot of readers are anticipating his book. While writing his book, did you find it was easier than expected because he is an established character already or was it more difficult to flesh his character out?

Hart is a hottie, and I've always loved him. I think it's much easier to come up with a brand new character than to start with one partly established in other books, because you have no restrictions. However, with Hart, I've known that character for a very long time, so he was fairly easy to slip into. He played a large part in Ian's book, and that's what I drew from--the relationship between Ian and Hart. Duke's Perfect Wife is very much about the Ian/Hart relationship as well as the one between Hart and Eleanor.

Your next book in the series is called THE SEDUCTION OF ELLIOT MCBRIDE. Readers have seen a glimpse of Elliot already, but what can you tell us about him that we have yet to discover?

Yes. I love Elliot! I know readers don't know much about him, but I think you'll like him. Elliot has had a rough time of it--he was a wild young man who went to Afghanistan and India, and found a way to make money at being a wild adventururer. Then life beat on him (he was imprisoned in a very bad place for a long time), and he's back in Scotland trying to recover. So that wild young man he was is battling the PTSD-like problems he has now plus trying to figure out how to be a proper Scottish laird. Juliana, his heroine, is never sure from day to day what's going to happen!

But Elliot's very hot, loves running around in his kilt (only), and loves kissing the heroine.... no matter where they happen to be or under what circumstance.

I call him "The Untamed McBride".

You've got me all excited now! Daniel Mackenzie is also set to have his story told. How would you say Daniel has grown throughout the series so far?

I'm looking forward to writing Daniel's story. I think he has grown--he was raised with benign neglect, and he's had to watch and learn on his own, for the most part. As he sees each of his uncles find love and happiness, he understands the importance of true love vs. simply having someone to be with. He'll be looking for his one true love, and start to believe he'll never find her. Until he stumbles across her in an unlikely place...

We are fans of highlander romances here at UTC. But we would like to know which books you enjoy. Care to share your favorites with us?

I love a good mystery! I'm a mystery fan first and foremost. The mysteries of Donna Leon (set in Venice) are full of atmosphere, good mysteries, and great food! (I always want risotto after reading one.) In romance, I'm fond of Eloisa James, Elizabeth Hoyt, and Sarah MacLean. They are amazing romance authors, with wonderful senses of humor. Mary Jo Putney was my inspiration to write historical romance in the first place, and I've never stopped loving her books (and she's a very nice person too--when I, drooling fan girl, finally got to meet her). I'm also a fan of fantasy--Terry Pratchett, Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs--I can read and re-read them any time, and find great pleasure there.

You've named some of our absolute favorites there! What is the most essential item you require to crank a book out?

Iced tea. Lots of it.

Ian, Mac, Cam and now Hart - you seem to write the perfect highland hero. But now here's a tough question...If you could choose only one to go on a date with, who would you pick, where would you go and why?

Ahhhh!!! That's tough. I love them all, and I'm loving Elliot now too. I would probably pick Mac, though. He's full of fun and unpredictable, but he'd make sure you had a good time! I love men who like to laugh, and who make me laugh.

How many books do you have planned in this series?

As many as it takes. :-) I'll be discussing this soon with my publisher. I have stories to tell about Ainsley's other brothers (Sinclair and Stephen), and would like to do Inspector Fellows' story. Plus I introduced the character of David Fleming (Hart's decadent friend) in Duke's Perfect Wife, and I'm interested in what makes him tick. And then there's Angelo, the Romany...

And lastly... we are going to ask the question every girl wants to know...What's underneath a Mackenzie kilt?

What do ya think? ;-) Heaven.

I knew it! Cue swoons! Thanks for chatting with us today, Jennifer! It's a pleasure to have you at UTC again.

Jennifer Ashley: Clash of the Highlanders

Welcome to CLASH OF THE HIGHLANDERS. As you may have learned, we love highlanders here at UTC (Who doesn't?) So in celebration of Jennifer Ashley's latest release, THE DUKE'S PERFECT WIFE, we are hosting a little showdown between UTC and Demonlover's. You see, Laura from Demonlover's thinks Hart, the hero of Ashley's latest is the hottest of all the highlanders. No, no. That's not possible because Under the Covers firmly believes Ian, the hero of THE MADNESS OF LORD IAN MACKENZIE is the hottest.

So in order to settle this um....misunderstanding, we are taking it to you guys, the readers. YOU DECIDE who is hotter.

But first, Suz is going to try to entice you and list all the things that make Ian yummy.

Here's what our girl had to say. Take it away, Suz!

The Madness I have for Lord Ian Mackenzie

It was love at first sight for me. I saw Lord Ian across that page meticulously studying a Ming bowl and was instantly in love. I mean, if he can put that much concentration in to a bowl, then it leads me to believe he may be just as intense in...other places, why must I always be right? Unluckily for me, Beth managed to snag his attention first *sigh* I think I made the right decision in letting her have him.

Clearly Ian is the best of the Mackenzies. He is, after all,  the series opener, the one shown to us finnicky readers to entice us in and keep us reading. And it isn't just that he looks the best in a kilt, leaving a trail of drooling readers behind him hoping to have a quick peek to see exactly what sexy Scots wear under there. For me what makes Lord Ian such an unforgettable character and the best Mackenzie is his contradictions. He is both extremely vulnerable, not understanding all of what is said, done and felt around him even though he hears and sees all of it, and completely impervious, pretty much doing what he likes when he likes. He believes himself incapable of loving yet he feels all his emotions so very intensely, he not only loves Beth, he is consumed with it. Then of course, he is completely hot, no contradiction there he is just flat out gorgeous.

How can it possibly be better than that?

Laurie from Demonlover's says:

Hart is finally able to express love to Eleanor in ways he never dreamed of. This man, who vowed to never become like his father, in fact had become like him! He was driven to succeed in Parliament and plotted out his whole life! Having El back in his life made him see that he didn’t have to become Prime Minister to be worthy of his title, of El’s love, or of everyone else’s respect.

and I’ll make it a tie on the boys in the kilts ;P
The year is 1881. Meet the Mackenzie family--rich, powerful, dangerous, eccentric. A lady couldn't be seen with them without ruin. Rumors surround them--of tragic violence, of their mistresses, of their dark appetites, of scandals that set England and Scotland abuzz.

The youngest brother, Ian, known as the Mad Mackenzie, spent most of his young life in an asylum, and everyone agrees he is decidedly odd. He's also hard and handsome and has a penchant for Ming pottery and beautiful women.

Beth Ackerley, widow, has recently come into a fortune. She has decided that she wants no more drama in her life. She was raised in drama--an alcoholic father who drove them into the workhouse, a frail mother she had to nurse until her death, a fussy old lady she became constant companion to. No, she wants to take her money and find peace, to travel, to learn art, to sit back and fondly remember her brief but happy marriage to her late husband.

And then Ian Mackenzie decides he wants her.

ARC Review: The Duke's Perfect Wife by Jennifer Ashley

The Duke's Perfect Wife
(Highland Pleasures #4)
by Jennifer Ashley

Describe the book in three words

Suz: I love Hart...hmm or maybe Contains Hot Highlanders!

Annie: HART.IS.MINE.

Suz: ACTUALLY, I think you will find Hart is mine

*tug of war over Hart commences, Suz wins ofcourse, hehehe!*

The cover: Love it or Hate it?

Suz: Not a fan, I think that the other covers are better, especially Cam's book!

Annie: LOVE IT! It’s Paul Marron. In a Kilt. As Hart Mackenzie. Must I go on?

Hart Mackenzie: Sexy Dominant Highland God or Controlling Manipulative Bully?

Suz: Definietly sexy highland god with a nice wide dom streak, I loved that about Hart. I don't think he would be the same if he wasn't quite as manipulative and interfering as he was. You know that it all comes from a place of love, he just wants to protect his family and those he loves and he thinks he is the best man for the job!

Annie: It’s quite obvious what my answer would be to this one. Hart is a Highland god through and through. His dominant tendencies in and out of the bed make him so irresistible! How can you deny a man who knows exactly what he wants and how he wants it? Not only do we see Hart’s dominance and arrogance in this book, but we also see the vulnerable and parental side to him as well. Ashley does a great job of displaying different sides to Hart’s character.

What did you think of Eleanor Ramsey?

Suz: I really like El, I loved her habit of talking on and on and despite having a fairly hard life struggling through poverty, she never whines, she just gets on with it cheerfully. And what I really really loved about her was that she never backed down from Hart and that she was never afraid of him, as deep down she knows she can always trust him. She was a great heroine

Annie: El is my newest favourite historical romance heroine. I loved her spunk and attitude and the way she keeps Hart on his toes. Despite the fact that her family is in an uncomfortable position, she doesn’t allow the burdens of life to dampen her spirits. She’s a fun, flirty gal who knows how to handle a man like Hart Mackenzie and I have to admire that talent. Not many can match someone so bold as a Mackenzie highlander.

Hart and El, were they a match made in heaven?

Suz: I am not normally a fan of rekindled romance, but I do think that El and Hart were a great couple. Hart needed El, she stopped him from becoming a shell, who only have his political ambitions for succor. I did think this book would be hotter then it was. There is some steamy scenes, but I think Cam and Ian's books were far more erotic.

Annie: Absolutely! There’s no question. The chemistry is potent from page one and undeniable throughout the rest of the book. El matches Hart in the way they are both determined to see through certain events until their expected results happen. While I thought the sex scenes would be more steamy and involve ..err...something extra, the love scenes between Hart and El were still fantastic.

The MacKenzie clan has grown from four solitary brothers to a horde of mini Highlanders and their wives, what do you think of the familial relationships and their inclusion in the book and their affect on Hart?

Suz: I think one of the best things about the Highland Pleasures series is the relationship that the four brothers have with eachother. The brotherly bonds are especially strong as they all lived through an abusive childhood, terroized by their father. Hart being the eldest has always protected his brothers, first from their father then from themselves and it has been the keypoint in his life. What was great about this book was it showed the tight connection that Hart and Ian (my two favourite Mackenzies!) had. Hart would do anything for Ian and is almost more like a father then a brother.

Annie:
Actually, one of the biggest reasons why I follow this series is because of the big familial relationships throughout the series. Ian plays a big part of this book and I loved reading about him again. In this book, we see more of Hart’s experiences with his abusive father and the possible fallouts of their actions if Hart didn’t do what he did. I LOVE the fact that Ashley incorporates a different kind of love in her romances. Romantic love is important, but a family is what makes a character's life full.

Any general thoughts on the book, and will you be looking forward to the next one The Seduction of Elliot McBride?

Suz: I loved this book! I have been looking forward to Hart's book since the The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie and I wasn't disappointed it was a heartwrenching and emotional book and I can't wait to see what What Ms Ashley has in store for us next.

Annie: YES! After devouring this book, it actually makes me want to go back and read the rest of the series to relive my favourite moments until the next book comes out. I’m actually regretting the fact that I read so quickly.

Any Favourite Quotes?

"We're Mackenzies," Mac said, his gaze steady. "Remember that we break what we touch."

That was what Hart Mackenzie always wanted, she realized. For others to surrender to him, to let him be their master. Not because he wanted to punish them, or to have his own way, but for their own good, beacuse he wanted to take care of them. Those who didn't understand that dashed themselves to bits on him.

“You were supposed to burn this,” Hart said. He couldn’t get up, could not move, drained from what he’d just read.
Eleanor closed the door and came to the table littered with letters. “I couldn’t, somehow.”
He noticed that she did not need to ask which letter he meant. “Why not?”
“I don’t know, really. I supposed, because, of all the people you could have told, you chose to tell me.”
“There was no other person,” Hart said. “No one in the world.”

Review: Pride Mates by Jennifer Ashley

Pride Mates
by Jennifer Ashley
(Shifters Unbound # 1)

The premise of the supernatural community in this series is really interesting.  Shifters are out of the closet but they don't really live among humans.  They have communities that are separated, where they can live by their own rules and in a pack atmosphere.  And they are also collared.

That was the most interesting concept to me.  This collar actually controls the animal tendencies, prevents them from becoming violent, and ultimately humans feel safe around a collared shifter.  All pack shifters are required to wear it by law and can't be taken off.

So how do you explain that a collared, pack shifter is being accused of murdering his very human, and now very dead, girlfriend.  It is up to Kim Frasier to uncover what really happened and defend him.  She's a lawyer and this is her big break case.  And if it takes her getting cozy with a strong shifter to get the help she needs, then she's the girl for the job.

But let me tell you about Liam.  In fact, let me tell you about the Morrissey family.  Sexy irish accents, roguish bad boy good looks and behavior, and tons of sex appeal.  I want some of that!  Even though I really liked Liam, I am very curious about Sean.

The story was entertaining enough but even though the premise was original it fell just a bit flat to me.  But I can't wait to read Sean's story so I'm hurrying along with these.

The last thing I feel worth mentioning is that I read this story on audio.  Even tough the narrators voice is ok I just feel she didn't deliver the characters emotions and personalities correctly, so this affected my review as well.  I will be getting an ebook for the next one!

Review: The Many Sins of Lord Cameron by Jennifer Ashley

The Many Sins of Lord Cameron (Highland Pleasures #3)
by Jennifer Ashley
Historical Romance

The Mackenzies, what a delectable and decandent treat! They are like a box of chocolates full of your favourite flavours how the hell are you supposed to pick!? You have the nutty Ian Mackenezie, the silky smooth Mac Mackenzie and now the dark chocolate treat that is Cam Mackenzie, I say dark chocolate one, because it is my favourite and two because like dark choclate Cam is slightly bitter. And frankly who can blame him? Like some of the best heroes he has a tortured past, when he was young he impulsively married, not realizing until too late that his wife was completely mad (shades of Jane Eyre in this book, but don't worry, she isn't hiding in the attic!) and she preceded to make Cam's life miserable until she died under some rather suspicious circumstances.

As you can tell I completely loved Cam, I always liked him in the previous books and this one he managed to exceed my expectations. He was a little rough, he liked horses, drink and women, exactly in that order, but you know he is a good man by the way he treats his brothers and how he's tried bumbling through being a parent to his son Daniel. What was fantastic was watching him soften a little as Ainsley becomes important in his life, he doesn't become all gooey but he definitely melts a little.

Ainsley, I liked her, like all the heroines in this series so far she isn't some blushing debutante but a grown woman who knows her own mind and knows what she wants. That is another thing I like about this series the heroines seem more like real women with pasts and inseurities of their own that make them stand out a little more in this genre.

Now to the SEX factor, they were hot together, the chemitry between them was fantastic you could feel the heat and the longing as you read it and it may be wise to carry around a fan with you whilst reading it because it is knicker changingly good.

So, Lord Cameron Mackenzie is my flavour of the month, I recommend you all get your teeth in to him!

My Favourite Quote:

"I don't want to be friends with you, Ainsley Douglas. I want to be your lover. I want to bury myself inside you. I want to find out whether you taste as good all the way down, I want to feel you squeezing me, and I want to hear your cries as you take me inside you."

My Next Flavour of the Month Hart Mackenzie

"Hart wants to win by proving he's right-about everything- not with tittle-tattle and bedroom gossip. Hart wants to be God Almighty. No, he already thinks he's God Almighty. Now he wants to prove it to everyone else."

Reviews: Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage by Jennifer Ashley

Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage (Highland Pleasures #2)
by Jennifer Ashley
Historical Romance

I LOVED Ian MacKenzie so I was a little sceptical about reading about Mac and Isabella. Don’t get me wrong, I found them both likeable characters but after starting off with such a great book, I was honestly expecting something less than spectacular for this one. After all, I’m not usually a fan of rekindled romances.

The reason being that is that half of the romance has been told before the actual book. Therefore, we only get glimpses here and there of their past love and the writer has to work extra hard to establish that yearning and that spark in a shorter amount of time.

But with Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage, I found that Ashley did a pretty good job of getting that constant yearning and distress onto the page. I liked that she added the not-so-happy scenes where they yelled the house down during their marriage and Mac’s careless drunkenness. It briefly showcased their problems that showed why they separated in the first place. I could see her efforts to try to get those feelings across but I didn’t always feel it.

In comparison to Ian’s book, I thought Mac’s book was equal in its goodness, if not more. Ashley really heats things up in Mac’s book! I don’t recall Ian’s love scenes to be this steamy. That scones and cream scene?? Yeah, totally unexpected but very, very HOT!!!

The only thing I wish there was more of is....I can’t believe I’m saying this but, WHERE’S INSPECTOR FELLOWS?! He makes a few appearances but after the first book and the whole reveal at the end, I thought he would play a much larger part in the storyline.

I love this series and this book was an easy one to devour. Mac is so tempting in those Mackenzie kilts! Paired with that wicked smile and his charm, there is no reason why Isabella wouldn’t find herself falling hard for her husband again.

My advice? PICK.THIS.BOOK.UP!! I can’t wait for Cam’s book!

Favourite Quote:

"I loved and adored you, but I drained you like a thirsty man at a spring. I loved what you could give me - your admiration, your acceptance, your love, your forgiveness. I forgot to love you for yourself."

Interview and Giveaway with Jennifer Ashley!

Holla Maidens! Guess who has stopped by for a little chat with the ladies at UTC? JENNIFER ASHLEY!!! *squee* Okay stop, we're going to embarrass ourselves. Anyway, Jennifer Ashley writes Highland Pleasures, a series about the most delicious brothers the Highlands have ever seen. She also writes paranormal romance with her Shifter Unbound series. Plus, she also writes as Allyson James and as Ashley Gardner. Really, this woman does it all! And that's why we love her! Now help me welcome Jennifer Ashley!

UTC: Thank you Jennifer for taking the time to chat with us today! Let's get started by talking about kilts! MMMMmmm, I love a man in kilts! How did Highland Pleasures come to be? What was the inspiration behind this series?

The family Mackenzie just sort of walked into my head. I remember sitting on the sofa staring out at my backyard at one point, and seeing these guys in kilts tearing up Victorian London. Bad boys, in and out of scandals, untrusted--and they don't care. I always pictured four: The leader (Hart), the dangerous one (Cameron), the charmer (Mac), and the madman (Ian).
These guys stayed in my thoughts, waking and sleeping, and wouldn't let go of me. I couldn't stop thinking about them. I figured, if I couldn't, maybe readers wouldn’t' be able to either.

Coming up with the heroines was much harder. Isabella was always there--the woman who loved the Mackenzies but marriage to one drove her insane. Eleanor was always there too--things didn't work out for her and Hart at first, but she's always loved him and is there for him.

Beth and Ainsley--oh, my, it took forever to find those two! I hired and fired many a heroine before they were right. Oy. But I like Beth and Ainsley came out well, so I'm happy.

UTC: Lord Ian Mackenzie has Asperger's Syndrome. This is a unique characteristic that sets him apart from other heroes. Why did you decide to make Ian have this disorder?

I always knew that the youngest Mackenzie brother would be "mad," or at least different from his brothers. Ian popped into my head that way and never changed (he's stubborn). I realized after watching him a while that he had high-functioning autism, or maybe Asperger's Syndrome. I did a lot of research on Asperger's, and that's what he had. I incorporated much that I learned about AS into Ian's characteristics. I wanted to explore how those in the Victorian world would react to Ian, when AS and autism weren't yet recognized. I'm always interested in incongruities and how people respond to them.

UTC: In Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage, Lady Isabella and Mac Mackenzie have a lot of bitterness towards one another after their divorce. Do you feel that it is more difficult (or easier) to write a rekindled romance?

It was quite difficult to write the rekindled romance, because rekindled couples have so much baggage! The writer has to make it believable that the h/ h had a good reason to break up, but not such a horrific reason that it's unbelievable they can get back together. I did *not* want to write an infidelity story--I wanted to explore their characters and other possibilities. (Marriage is complicated!)

Some readers didn't like or get what I was trying to do with Mac and Isabella's story, but I had quite a few people tell me they'd been through almost exactly what Mac and Isabella went through, that I'd captured it spot on. That's good for me, the writer--though I'm sorry those readers went through the pain!

UTC: You write paranormal and historical romances, which genre is easier to write about?

Neither. Both have their difficulties. With historicals, the trick is not to be too modern: in language, attitudes, knowledge, and the like. At the same time, you can't be so non-modern that the reader can't relate to the characters.

The Shifters series is present day, which you might think is easier--but I have to say that I started writing anything contemporary rather late. I read, wrote, breathed and slept historical novels until about five years ago. Figuring out how to make the present-day, mundane world interesting is hard! How exciting is going for coffee or grocery shopping?
Also in a paranormal series, you have to watch consistency. If the Shifters can only shift this certain way, they can't be shifting any old way because you need it for the plot. Also, my Shifters must always be affected by their Collars when they fight, so I can't have them just start to fight without consequences of that.

So, each genre is fraught with peril, but each is wonderful as well.

UTC: Of all your heroes and heroines you have written, which couple is your favourite and why?

Eee! This is always a hard question! Well-- I really love how Cameron and Ainsley turned out (in Many Sins of Lord Cameron). That said, I had a blast writing Eleanor and Hart (Hart really shaped up to be an amazing man). And then there's Mick and Janet from the Stormwalker series I write as Allyson James. Those two are fiery (pardon the pun), and I love following them from book to book. But then there's the Shifters--Andrea and Sean are wonderful. But then, Wild Cat, out in January, has my favorite Shifter couple--Diego and Cassidy. They're just hot!

UTC: What can readers expect from Lord Cameron in The Many Sins of Lord Cameron?

Frustration, passion, laughter, tears--you find out what happened in Cameron's first marriage, and why he's both so protective of his son Daniel but still doesn't really know what to do with him. Cam has a lot of healing to do, and Ainsley helps him do it (while driving him nuts at the same time). You'll learn about Ainsley and her four brothers (The McBrides), and see what's up with the Mackenzie family as a whole.

UTC: Hart Mackenzie's book is out April 2012. When will the cover be revealed?

The cover for The Duke's Perfect Wife is being worked on as we speak. I saw a draft of the cover art. It's a clinch, with a cute red-headed Eleanor, and Hart--hunky, shirtless man in a kilt. :-) I'll post the cover as soon as it's final. Usually it's a month or two from draft to final cover.

UTC: If you got transported back in time and landed in the Mackenzie's time, which brother do you think you would fall in love with?

Wow, that's a hard question! I wouldn't mind sampling each of them. But I might settle on Mac--he's full of fun and so sexy, but also so gentle and protective. But then--Cameron. Hart. Ian. Can I have all of them? I don't mind.

UTC: By all means, go ahead! Without you, we wouldn't have these men to drool over! Do you find that there is a difference while writing your Shifter Unbound series and your Highland Pleasures series?

I personally don't *feel* different, but I do have a different approach to each series. Highland Pleasures is very character-driven, with some plot, much heat, and lots of romance. I try to focus mostly on the hero / heroine and the development of their relationship.

In the Shifters series, there's more plot and action in addition to the romance. Not only am I telling the characters' stories and taking you through their romance, but there are problems the Shifters as a whole have to face. I like to enlarge the story to the other Shifters as well as the main couple. And there's plenty of heat!

UTC: What made you write about Shifters rather then vampires? Have you always preferred furry over fanged?

Before I wrote the Shifters, I told my publisher I wanted to write a vampire series (and I have one percolating in my head even now), but my publisher basically said no. I think they were dismayed by the thought of yet *another* vampire series on the pile (and I can't really blame them).

I decided to do shape shifters instead, because I'd also had an idea for a shapeshifter world (starring the Morrisseys, those Irish wildcats, a family of bachelors living together), so I didn’t mind at all putting vampires on the back burner and starting the shape shifters. I'm very glad I did, because I love the Shifters! But I'll get to the vamps eventually.

UTC: Let's say you had the chance to drop your characters into another author's world. Whose worldbuilding fascinates you and why would you choose this author?

Hmm. Good question. I might pick the Sookie Stackhouse universe, which is funny but edgy at the same time. I could imagine my Shifters hanging out there, thinking their shifters were crazy. But still getting in on the action, not to mention the heat. I think Charlaine Harris did a fabulous job with that series (and will I be smacked if I say I think the books are better than the television show?)

UTC: If you could pick three fictional characters to attend your dinner party, who would you choose and why?

This is a tough question, because the fictional characters I am most fascinated with are not necessarily ones who are particularly nice or likeable (e.g., Sherklock Holmes). They're interesting, but in real life, probably too obnoxious for my taste. I have a low tolerance for bad behavior (especially at my dinner party!)

However, I wouldn't mind inviting Paola and Guido Brunetti from Donna Leon's fabulous Venice-set mystery series, as long as Paola cooks. That series is good for the food descriptions alone! (mmm, risotto).

UTC: Tough question coming up....who is hotter? Shifters or Highlanders?

So not fair! They're both scorching, and I wouldn't mind being swept away by either one. It's a tough call! I think it has to do with the characters themselves--my Shifters and Highlanders are similar, they just live in different times and places (and the Mackenzies don't shift--that I know of!)
Again, can I have them both? I'll take them . . .

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.  The pre-publication release we are eagerly anticipating this week is:

The Many Sins of Lord Cameron
by Jennifer Ashley
Highland Pleasures #3

Lord Cameron Mackenzie is intrigued when he finds the pretty widow, Ainsley Douglas, hiding in the window seat of his bedchamber. Cam remembers Ainsley Douglas all right—six years ago, he’d caught her in this very bedchamber, during a house party in the Mackenzies’ Scottish manor. Enchanted by her ingenuous excuses, he decided to seduce her, but stopped shy when she’d made a rather touching appeal about her “good husband who didn’t deserve to be heartbroken.”

Later, Cameron learned that her visit to his bedchamber was part of some female intrigue against him, the kind his late wife used to practice. Ainsley protested her innocence, but Cameron’s anger made him never want to see her again. Now she’s back, at another houseparty—and Cameron finds the gray-eyed minx in his bedchamber, again. Her excuses are just as ingenuous, but this time Cameron is determined to teach her a lesson.

Release date: 2nd August

I cannot wait to read this! I have wanted to read his book since I read the first book, The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie Jennifer Ashley really knows how to write hot highland men! And have you seen the cover, I love me some lickable abs!
