ARC Review: Darker After Midnight by Lara Adrian

Darker After Midnight
by Lara Adrian
(Midnight Breeds # 10)

It feels like I've been waiting to read Chase's story since forever, and well, I have. I fell in love with his character in Tegan's book and have seen him go from a highly respected member breed society to an Order warrior, to well... it hurts to think where he's gone lately.

But I think this was always the frame of mind he was supposed to be in, not the too far gone, but the bit reckless and out of control.  He was always a rebel at heart and just needed that side of himself to come out.

This book picks up where Deeper Than Midnight left off. Chase is the prime suspect the human police have on a murder attempt on a politician as well as some terrorist attacks around town. The Order has been forced to relocate and Chase, he has one mission in his mind before he "finishes" himself.   He wants to destroy Dragos.

Caught in the crossfire here is Tavia Fairchild.  First of all, let me just say she might be one of my favorite heroines of this series.  And you're in for a surprise with her character!  A Big One!  She is truly the perfect match for Chase and through his attraction to her she's able to bring him down from the ledge just enough for him to see a future.

As a couple, they were great together.  The romance and the heat were excellent.  But that's not all this book has to offer.  Dragos is still present and causing havoc.  There were even times in this book when I thought "How can everything be going his way?".  But in the end, the story was full of action, it grabs you from the first page and doesn't stop until the end.  What a ride!!!

And I can't leave aside the little ones.  I love Mira and Nathan and Kellan and I'd love to see their characters developed more.  Maybe even get books?  Also there are new developments with most of the couples, which was very nice to see.

If you are a fan of this series, you have to read this book NOW!  If you haven't started it yet, what are you waiting for?  A bit dark, and not always roses, this series and characters are captivating!!  Great job Ms. Adrian!!  I can't wait for more!

Review: A Taste of Midnight by Lara Adrian

A Taste of Midnight
(Midnight Breed 9.5)
by Lara Adrian

A TASTE OF MIDNIGHT is an exhilarating read that will leave Midnight Breeds fans wanting more! Lara Adrian crafts a well-written and passionate story for widow Danika MacConn, the Breedmate who lost her mate, Conlan in the first book of the Midnight Breed series, Kiss of Midnight.

Now in Edinburgh with her infant son, Conner, Danika has an unpleasant encounter with Mr. Reiver, an arrogant Breed male who enjoys selling live human game for the pleasure of seeing them suffer. Dani overhears a secret conversation about cargo that is being shipped containing humans for blood sport. Though Danika shows her courage countless times in this short story, she still has reason to fear for her life because now Reiver is interested in Dani.

It is then when Danika notices Reiver’s bodyguard, a man who goes by the name of Brannoc. He works as Reiver’s henchman, doing deeds to keep him close to his greatest enemy. In truth, Bran wants nothing more than to exact revenge for a crime that Reiver’s blood club has committed.

I loved this short story. Adrian incorporates all the elements that she is known for in this story – a strong heroine, a dangerously seductive Breed male and enough action to get your heart pumping. I was really impressed with the emotion in this one. I have been following the Midnight Breed series for awhile now so I was curious to see who Danika would be paired with. Oftentimes, it’s hard to have a character come back from such a heartbreaking experience, but Adrian does it with ease. Danika still grieves for her lost mate, still loves him dearly. But in her heart, she still has the ability to love and in A TASTE OF MIDNIGHT, Lara Adrian gives her a love to last several more lifetimes.

Review: Deeper than Midnight by Lara Adrian

Deeper than Midnight (Midnight Breeds # 9)
by Lara Adrian
Paranormal Romance

DEEPER THAN MIDNIGHT is the ninth book is Lara Adrian’s popular Midnight Breed series. I am thrilled to say that Ms. Adrian still does a fantastic job at keeping things fresh in the vampire Breed world. I noticed that some other readers did not feel the romance between Hunter and Corinne as much as previous books. And this is what I think on that matter....

Going into this book, I knew that DEEPER THAN MIDNIGHT would not be as steamy as say, Kade’s book SHADES OF MIDNIGHT just based on the fact that it’s Hunter’s book. Hunter is a Gen One, one of the most powerful and rare members of the Breed. In addition to that, he was taught that emotions are a weakness and that loving someone can only bring on bad consequences. He was birthed for the sole purpose of killing, never to experience love or any other type of emotion. Hunter is cold as ice and the embodiment of neutrality, feeling neither pleasure nor pain when in combat. Taking all this into consideration, I felt that Ms. Adrian did a great job opening Hunter up in a way that stays true to his assassin personality as a cold and merciless killer, but also balancing that with a more gentle, loving side that we witness with Corinne and occasionally with little Mira.

In addition to that, Corinne Bishop has lived through hell and is now getting another shot at life. Now, she has a future. But early on in this book, Corinne isn’t thinking about what lies ahead for her. Instead, she is remembering all the abuse she endured at the hands of her captor, Dragos. Her first priority is to return and see her family whom she hasn’t seen for more than seventy years. And once she does, she realizes that not everything is what it seemed to be. After that whole debacle, she has another issue pressing on her, and that is the mission of finding her lost son whom she birthed while captured.

So falling in love isn’t on Hunter or Corinne’s agenda at all. Corinne is mourning the loss of her past life while Hunter deems himself unworthy to be loved at all. And I think this is why people didn’t think the romance was potent enough in this book. It’s because neither character hoped to fall in love during this mission. But, thankfully, it happened on its own and Ms. Adrian does a fantastic job showing Corinne’s trust in Hunter in key points in the story. For someone who has been a victim of sexual abuse, Corinne is much more hesitant in dealing with her feelings for Hunter and it’s understandable.

The Bessie music scene is probably the most notable instance where Corinne first shows her interest in Hunter. She converses with him, asking him what kind of music he likes and it showcases the beginning of a romance between the two, where Corinne trusts someone else enough to be in her life.

Along with the great romance, Ms. Adrian writes the best action scenes that I can remember reading! I noticed this from the very first book, KISS OF MIDNIGHT and in each subsequent book, Adrian kick ass! Fast-paced and very detailed, I feel like I’m watching a movie whenever the warriors make others eat steel. I love the grittiness of it!

And then there’s her overall “voice” that I absolutely loved as well. Adrian writes with such fluidity that I don’t feel like I’m reading. She’s a fantastic wordsmith where she is able to put words together that can either make your jaw drop with twists and surprises or make you swoon with delicate words of love.

Covers to Covet

There have been some new cover releases this past week and I'm dying to share them with you all. Ironically enough, all these authors who I'm about to talk about are some of my favorites! So let's get started!

Lara Adrian, author of the popular Midnight Breeds series has just revealed the cover of Sterling Chase's book, entitled Darker After Midnight. This is the tenth book in her paranormal romance series and this book has a release date of January, 25, 2012.

There is also more great news for lovers of this series because...Lara has recently signed on to write another two books in the series, and there will also be an exclusive, e-book original novella coming out later this year. We know a lot of you will want to know if the novella will be Gideon and Savannah's story. Not this time, but Lara definitely has plans to tell their story in the near future. Isn't this great news!?

What do you think of the cover? I think it looks very sensual! I love it! But when I first saw this, my eyebrows shot up becauuuuuuse....CHECK THIS OUT!!

This is Shayla Black's cover for her upcoming book entitled Belong to Me. This is the fifth book in her Wicked Lovers series! Same picture, right? But it looks like the guy in Lara's cover has a little more hair. Okay, maybe I'm looking too much into this! I'm playing "spot the difference!"

Belong to Me will be released on October 4th, 2011 from Berkley Heat.

Here's the blurb:

She’s undercover and in over her head…

When FBI analyst Tara Jacobs’ fellow agent and best friend goes missing while investigating a sex ring, Tara goes undercover as a submissive in a Dallas BDSM club called Dominion. But no man can top a woman with Tara’s moxie convincingly enough—until an edgy, dangerous Dom takes control of the scene and sets her heart racing with a single, commanding glance. Too bad he’s also the man who stole her innocence years ago—and the one to whom she will never submit.

He’s got everything under control…until he falls for her again.

Navy SEAL Logan Edgington once left the woman he loved to save her life. He knows Tara will never forgive him, but he has no doubt that he possesses the knowledge to master her fears and the strength to guide her through an unfamiliar world of pleasure and pain. He alone can protect her on a dangerous mission that reveals both wicked depravities and terrible secrets. Logan relishes the exquisite torture of holding her again, feeling her uninhibited response. No matter how much Tara insists their fling will end after this mission, he’s determined that she will be his again—and this time, he’ll never let her go.

And now, last but not least! Kresley Cole has just revealed her newest IAD cover! Lothaire is one of my favourite characters in her entire series! What do you think of the cover???

I say this countless times so you're probably bored of it now, BUT I LOVE PAUL MARRON! What do you think of his sultry red-eyed stare? It ...kinda freaks me out! He looks good, but kinda freaky too, which I think matches Lothie! He's even got the pale hair!

The one thing I'm not exactly thrilled about is the book titled. Lothaire? Really? I know I used to complain in the early days about all the alliteration in Cole's titles, but LOTHAIRE just seems a little boring compared to all the other cool titles.

That's it for this edition of Covers to Covet!!

Deeper than Midnight by Lara Adrian

Release Date: June 28th, 2011

At eighteen, Corinne Bishop was a beautiful, spirited young woman living a life of privilege as the adopted daughter of a wealthy family. After many years of captivity and torment, Corinne is rescued by the Order, a cadre of vampire warriors embroiled in a war against Dragos and his followers. Her innocence taken, Corinne has lost a piece of her heart as well--the one thing that gave her hope during her imprisonment, and the only thing that matters to her now that she is free.

Assigned to safeguard Corinne on her trip home is a formidable golden-eyed Breed male called Hunter. Once Dragos's most deadly assassin, Hunter now works for the Order, and he's hell-bent on making Dragos pay for his manifold sins. Bonded to Corinne by their mutual desire, Hunter will have to decide how far he'll go to end Drago's reign of evil--even if carrying out his mission means shattering Corinne's tender heart.
