ARC Review: Goddess in the Middle by Stephanie Julian

Goddess in the Middle
by Stephanie Julian
Forgotten Goddesses #3

Amity, the almost forgotten Etruscan Goddess of Health has little power left, but with what little remains she works as an aesthetist. But Charun the god of the Underworld has targeted her next and has started to appear in her dreams, especially when she starts being stalked by a demon. But, is it coincidence when Remy and Rom the lovers she took the night before kill the demon, or are they more then they seem?

I need to cool down a bit after reading this, there is no question that this was a hot read! Full or gorgeous angsty lucani (werewolves) and a goddess making the filling in a very delicious sandwich. The sex was well written, hot and dirty, the literally made their woman pass out! Although sometimes the lust did feel a little out of place, even in tense life and death situations they seemed to be thinking about sex.

Although I enjoyed this book, I do sometimes feel I am getting lost in all the names, events and peoples in it. Ms Julian has built up a rich world and I think it helps if you have read a few more of her other books so you can get a feel of her world and her background characters.

Overall I did enjoy this book, I like the idea of the fading godesses and I look forward to reading the next in the series.

UTC Reports from the Liberty States Fiction Writers - Create Something Special Conference

Hello Maidens!!! Francesca here.  I am very excited to share with you my experiences this past weekend at the Liberty States Fiction Writers Create Something Special Conference.  This event was held at the Renaissance Hotel in Iselin, NJ on March 17, 2012!  Being the first year that it was open to readers, I think we had a nice little group and great interactions with the authors in attendance!
That's me in the middle (yes, with heels) along with
the members of the Book Obsessed Chicks Book Club

Kicking it off: Luncheon with Larissa Ione (Keynote Speaker)
Even though Larissa was a bit nervous (or a lot!) she gave a wonderful speech!  As advised by her good friend, author Stephanie Tyler, she had to have a theme for a speech, and she chose to talk about fear.  I was very impressed with what she had to say.  She shared lot of things about her life that I wasn't aware of, maybe some of you are.  She was actually in the military, in the Air Force, mainly due to her fear of flying.  She became an EMT because of her fear of blood and those sort of things.  She has always faced her fears head on.  This is a quality that I can't help but admire profoundly as I generally tend to take the easy way out of things.
Then came Hurricane Katrina, and took everything from her.  She was one of the unlucky people that lost everything during that storm.  I cannot imagine the toll that would take on someone to experience, and at that time she also still had to face rejection with her work.  At that point she almost gave up on her dreams of writing.

We have Stephanie Tyler to thank for pulling her back in.  She wrote a short scene and sent it to Larissa, told her to write the next scene.  It was up to Larissa to figure out who was the naked chick in this guys' shower during a storm.  And so the back and forth of scenes started happening and Riding the Storm was born.  Now Stephanie and Larissa have finished the ACRO series, which they write together as Sydney Croft, and this was what gave Larissa the extra push she needed to write her own work, which is now the very popular Demonica world.

Murder, Monsters and Mayhem:
Melinda Leigh, Jonathan Maberry, Chris Redding and Lois Winston

The first panel I attended I was most impressed with an author that I've never heard of, and he writes zombies of all things.  Not usually my cup of tea.  Jonathan Maberry was definitely my favorite of this bunch, with his knowledge and personality, the way he talked about all the research that goes into his books.  Just amazing.  And if humor is your thing, and you've enjoyed, like me, the Stephanie Plum series, you might also be interested in Lois Winston.  This group talked weapons, from your regular type weapons to converting any household item into a weapon.

Chat with Larissa Ione

Ahhhh yes!  We had her all to ourselves and I was sitting on first row!  We got to ask her all kinds of general questions and here are the key points:
  • She just sold the next two Demonica books.  After she finishes the Lords of Deliverance series with Reseph's book she will go back to the Demonica series.
  • The first book in the "going back to Demonica" will be Reaver! *squeeeeeee*  And on a side note, BIG REAVER SURPRISES AHEAD!!!
  • Of all her demons she would like to date Eidolon
  • Her favorite sex scenes (and she has quite a bit to choose from) was the losing of virginity scene in Passion Unleashed
  • Passion Unleashed was the easiest book to write
  • She gets quite a bit of hate mail! =(
  • Her husband has read all her books, and he actually makes the guys on his ship (Coast Guard) read them as well!  He gets asked a lot "Sooooooo, you and your wife practice these sex scenes???"
  • He also seems to think he writes her books when an idea he had is in them.
  • He designed the Lords of Deliverance symbol.  Go figure, now he writes and designs her books ;)
  • They did not rehearse the upside down tree scene.
  • Sin and Limos are her favorite heroines
  • She can't have any music when she's writing or she can't concentrate
Beyond Werewolves and Vampires:
Caridad Pineiro, Larissa Ione, Virginia Kantra, Judi Fennell, Jenna Kernan

This panel was a lot of fun all the authors were very open about their writing process, some are planners some are pansters.  Some start out with an end in mind while others just start writing and see what happens.  The timelines for writing a book where all between 3-6 months for some to 6-9 months for others.  I think we also got a great feel for their personalities and what they write about.  Virgina Kantra and Judi Fennell who both write about seapeople but in very different ways, Caridad Pineiro who writes about vampires and more (while still working full time!), Jenna Kernan who mixes historical and paranormal, and of course Larissa who writes about demons and angels.
Book Fair
I got to meet a lot of nice authors and get lots of signed books, here are some pics I was able to take with some of the authors in attendance.

Caridad Pineiro

Larissa Ione

Sarah MacLean

Virginia Kantra

Maria V. Snyder

Jenna Kernan

Stephanie Julian
The After-Party
Yes!!!  This party was awesome!  We managed to kidnap Larissa Ione and Caridad Pineiro for a PJ party and although I can't really tell you all that went down or was talked about, I'll leave you with just some pics.

I want to thank all the wonderful authors that participated in the event for making it so much fun, to Caridad Pineiro and Larissa Ione for being so wonderful and such good sports, to all the Book Obsessed Chicks from Long Island, you girls rock and I had an amazing time, and last but certainly nost least, to the wonderful Kimberly Rocha, who I have to give a big thank you for letting me tag along as well as taking all these wonderful pictures I'm sharing with you today!

Review: How to Worship a Goddess by Stephanie Julian

How To Worship A Goddess (Forgotten Goddesses #2)
by Stephanie Julian
Erotic Romance

Lucy, the Etruscan Goddess of the Moon and the goddess the Lucani worship. However, there are demons after her trying to steal her power to get their master out the Underworld, which makes is really bad timing when Brandon Stevenson, the ice hockey player she has been lusting sfter for two seasons steps into her bar looking for her.

I confess, I have been a bad bad girl! Normally I am really OCD about reading books in order, but I have been naughty as I haven't read the first book yet: What a Goddess Wants, something I am going to have in immediately rectify as I really liked this book.

I liked the characters of Lucy and Brand in this book, I thought they made a sweet as well as flaming hot couple! The sex in this book was hot and frequent, Brand was a fricking love machine and had that dominant edge that gets me all hot and bothered, I would kinda hate Lucy if I didn't like her so much! However, don't be put off by my sex-being-frequent comment, as although it is, it doesn't drown the book so you are reading 350 pages of being getting their end off. This book does have a story, one which continues from the previous book, and I will definitely be reading the next book in the series to see what will happen next.

Stephanie Julian has written a lot of books, all set in the same world, which is fantastic as I get the impression that some of the characters in this book were HEAs from her other series. But, this did make it a little confusing, I understood the world but I did get mixed up with what species was what. Not enough to ruin the book, but I think I definitely need to read some more of her other books till I get my head around it.

A great read, I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone wanting an erotica with a big heap of romance.

Interview and Giveaway with author Stephanie Julian!

Hello Maidens! Today on Under the Covers we have Stephanie Julian with us, answering our nosey questions! Stephanie is the author of the Paranormal/Erotic series Lucani Lovers and Magical Seduction and now the brand new Forgotten Goddesses series, of which the first book What a Goddess Wants is out the 1st July! For more information on Stephanie Julian, please visit her website here:

Here's the blurb for WHAT A GODDESS WANTS:

It's OK no one remembers Etruscan Sun goddess Tessa. But when a demon threatens her life, she must turn to mythology's darkest warrior for protection...

Caligo of the Cimmerians has never met a woman as warm, sunny and inviting as Tessa. Their sizzling mutual attraction quickly sweeps the two of them into a love story that's worthy of the gods...

UTC: Thank you for joining us today, Stephanie! We are thrilled to have you! Let's get started...What has been your favourite paranormal creature to write about? And if you could be one of them which would it be?

SJ:
Sal the salbinelli has been my favorite creature. He’s got the lower body of a goat and the upper body of a man and tiny black horns on his head. If you’ve ever been to Pompeii, there’s a statue of Sal in a courtyard. The textbooks call it a faun but really, that’s Sal. And don’t ever dare call him Pan. No one’s really sure how long Sal’s been around and he’s not talking. Right now, he lives in Reading, Pennsylvania, and he runs a safe house for the Etruscans. Sal showed up in the very first published story of the Etruscans, SEDUCED BY MAGIC and he continues to play a role in the Forgotten Goddesses series, starting with WHAT A GODDESS WANTS.

If I could be any paranormal creature, I would want to be a fairy. I mean, who wouldn’t want wings and be able to fly?

UTC: Let's talk about writing in general. What got you started writing PNR/erotica?

SJ: I love reading it! I cut my teeth on Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe, J. Sheridan Le Fanu, Richard Matheson and HP Lovecraft as a young teenager. And when I found my mom’s copy of Kathleen Woodiwiss’ THE FLAME AND THE FLOWER, I discovered romance. By the time Anne Rice released INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, I was consciously looking for paranormal books with a love story. Then I read Maggie Shayne’s WINGS IN THE NIGHT series and I never looked back.

UTC: What or who inspires you to write?

SJ: Great books inspire me to write. When I read a wonderful story, that makes me want to be a better writer so I can provide that same experience to a reader.

UTC: Do you have any favourite books or series that you read over and over again, if so what are they?

SJ: My keeper shelf is actually a bookcase that sits by my bed. Some of the books on those shelves include the first three books in Tara Janzen’s Steele Street series (I’d have to pick CRAZY COOL and CRAZY LOVE as my favorite), Lora Leigh’s DAWN’S AWAKENING and COYOTE’S MATE, JR Ward’s first five Black Dagger Brotherhood books and Meljean Brooks’ THE IRON DUKE. I also have a keeper page on my Nook, which includes Cherrie Lynn’s ROCK ME and Nalini Singh’s KISS OF SNOW. There are a lot more but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

UTC: We are huge fans of J.R. Ward and Nalini Singh. ROCK ME is a fantastic erotica read by Cherrie Lynn too!  If you could pick any of your characters to spend the day with who would it be and what would you do?

SJ: I would love to be a fly on the wall if Cal from WHAT A GODDESS WANTS and Kyle from KISS OF MOONLIGHT ever meet up. These two alpha males might not have much to say but put them side-by-side in a fight and they would be poetry in motion.

UTC: That would be interesting! Your books are centred around Italian folk lore, what made you decide to use Etruscan myths and legends?

SJ: My dad is first-generation Italian and when I decided I wanted to write magical stories, I wanted to find something that would tie into my heritage. But I wanted a magical tradition I could play with, that wasn’t over-used, so I found the Etruscans. There’s so much already known about the Romans that I knew I wanted to stay away from most of that, but the Etruscans I knew I could play with. The first book I bought for research was ETRUSCAN ROMAN REMAINS by Charles Godfrey Leland. Fabulous source of information, I pull it out every couple of weeks and page through it, looking for bits and pieces to add to my stories.

UTC: Alright, what's sexier, wings or fangs?

SJ: Wings, absolutely. Fangs are pointy and there’s usually blood involved (that’s not to say I don’t love a good vampire). Wings are fluttery and pretty and when you have sex with someone who has wings, there are all sorts of gravity defying feats you can do with wings…

UTC: If you could cast the characters from your new book What a Goddess Wants who would they be?

SJ: Jensen Ackles from Supernatural is Cal. He’s who I had in mind the entire time and his picture hangs on the board in front of my desk. Tessa is based on a couple of girls of mine who shall remain nameless. But if I were picking an actress, it would be Reese Witherspoon. Actually, the model on the cover is perfect. I wonder if she can act… Sal would be a tough one because Sal is so totally in my head. Think hot Italian guy (which would leave out all of the “Jersey Shore” guys).

UTC: *shudders* Jersey Shore. Tell us, what is next for you?

SJ: I’m hoping the next book in the Lucani Lovers series, GRACE IN MOONLIGHT, will be released before the end of the summer. Still waiting to hear from my editor on that one. The next book in the Forgotten Goddesses, HOW TO WORSHIP A GODDESS, releases in December, and I’m writing the third book, GODDESS IN THE MIDDLE, right now. I’ll also have a sexy contemporary release from Carina Press in January, SEX, LIES & SURVEILLANCE. And I’m playing with the second book in the Fringe series.

UTC: Thanks for joining us today Stephanie!

SJ: Thank you so much for having me here today!

Review: Seduced by Magic by Stephanie Julian

Seduced by Magic (Magical Seduction #1)
by Stephanie Julian
Erotica

Justin has always been fascinated with the paranormal, his father used to tell his stories when he was a child and he can't help feel that there is some truth to them. But being seemingly the only man who believes in fairies isn't easy and he has been searching for evidence of their existence for years. But he may have got more then he bargained for when he has a strange erotic dream about a beautiful red haired woman with pink fairy wings...

A man who believe in fairies? Doesn't sound too promising; however, if all guys who believe in fairies are as great as Justin then bring 'em on! He was intelligent, hot and funny and I can't blame Scarlata (Scary to her friends) for falling for him. The chemistry between the two was sizzling, and they literally couldn't keep their hands of each other, which means it is lucky for them that sex creates magical energy! Being chased through the woods by mad men with guns? Stop for a quick hot shag and you are all set! Not that I minded; although there is a lot of sex in this book it didn't feel like you were stumbling from one sex scene to the other with a flimsy plot holding it up inbetween.

This book also introduces you to the Etruscan pantheon and fairytales with all the paranormal beings that come with it and has started building up an interesting new world where all the god, godesses and mythological creatures that you have heard about stand a good chance of walking amongst us. This large and potentially complex world sets you up for a lot of future possibilities in the following books and I can't wait to read more!

Review: Size Matters by Stephanie Julian

Size Matters
by Stephanie Julian
Erotica Romance

3.5 Feathers

The blurb of this book is what caught my eye, there are loads of books about vampires, shifter, faeries, angels, demons etc but really how many PNR/erotica books to you see about Big Foot? NONE! This is the first one I have seen!

So I finally got the book and can exclusively tell you that Big Foot.... is a guy called Tim! Now this may seem disappointing but it isn't, all 7ft of Tim is just plain hot, and not only hot but really sweet as well. I found myself really liking him and couldn't blame Carrie for jumping his bones as soon as she saw him.

This was a sweet, funny and hot novella, which has definately left me wanting to read more of Stephanie Julian and the world she has created which contains the Fae (who have cute little wings) and Yeti's.

Favourite Quotes

She'd already known his sex was tremedous but she hadn't realized she'd want to immotalize it in stone. Or firm latex.

But if the guy was a serial killer, of course he wouldn't say, "I;m a serial killer. Let me get out my chainsaw."
