Review: Sins of the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Sins of the Night
by Sherrilyn Kenyon
(Dark-Hunter # 8)

Her name is Danger and she is a female Dark Hunter. She used to live a life of sin when she first became a Dark Hunter, but now, her suspicious eyes land on Alexion, an unexplainable new pawn in this deadly game. All Danger knows is that Alexion is a major threat to her and her friends. It’s very likely that he has been sent to execute them, but despite this threat, there’s this inexplicable pull that lures her closer and closer to him. Will he strike or will he succumb to her desires?

SINS OF THE NIGHT seems much more lighter in tone than some of the other books in the series. Despite the dire threat of Alexion and what he has come to do, Danger’s wit seems to really shine through and gives this book such a rich backdrop to explore Alexion’s character and see what makes him crack. Danger lays on her charm thick and Alexion doesn’t really stand a chance at stone-walling her. They hit it off and though this still isn’t my favorite book of the series, it’s still a solid instalment for the Dark Hunters.

Sherrilyn Kenyon always writes one or two awesome scenes in each book and for this particular one, the Troy scene really made me laugh. I love SK’s humor and it’s nice to have a balance between all the action and the hot-and-heavy scenes. Something light to lift your spirits certainly makes a good book even greater.

Review: Seize the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Seize the Night
(Dark Hunters #7)
by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Valerius Magnus is the most hated Dark Hunter. He holds the fact that he is Roman very close to his heart, yet that is the very reason why most of the Dark Hunters hate him. Kyrian, Julian, Nick and even Otto, Valerius’ squire openly ostracizes Valerius because of his father’s actions. It seems that every good deed that Val commits, it is thrown back into his face. Kyrian especially has a reason to hate the ground that Valerius walks on, but Valerius is still a man of noble blood. He doesn’t let this extreme revulsion to him set him apart from the Dark Hunters or keep him from killing Daimons. I loved how misunderstood he was. I wondered how Kenyon would redeem such a character, but she does a stellar job of it.

Tabitha Devereaux, kickass vampire slayer and sex shop owner has her life in check. Everything seems to be going well for her until one mistake with a slip of her hand leaves one of the strongest Dark Hunters seriously injured. Talk about a big oopsie!

With the help of Nick, Tabitha gets Valerius to her home where she is able to care for him until he is better. But she needs to keep his presence a secret because if her sister found out that she was caring for and harboring her husband’s archenemy in her home, trouble will surely arise. As she cares for Valerius, she sees him at his most vulnerable and suddenly realizes that the face of an arrogant Roman he prances around with is simply a facade that hides a vulnerable and tortured man.

I loved - and I mean LOVED - Valerius and Tabitha together. The funny thing about them is that they don’t seem like they would mesh well together. Tabitha is feisty, a thrill to be around while Valerius is contained and a bit of a prude. But when they are together, it’s as if they were made for each other. Every moment is fun and romantic. I absolutely adored them together. I also loved the fact that Tabitha stands up to those who hate Valerius. You don’t often see this on romance. It’s usually the hero who is doing this, so it was refreshing to see a woman who is strong enough to stand up for her man.

Towards the end, Kenyon really plays with your emotions. Major events happen and it really made an already great book into a fantastic one! I got really sucked into the world that Kenyon has built and I don’t think there are any signs of me leaving.

Review: Born of Silence by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Born of Silence
by Sherrilyn Kenyon
(League # 5)

Kere is a lethal assassin and also one of the founding members of the Sentella, an organization whose aim is to fight injustice where they find it. But, he is also Darling Cruel, the next Ruler of one of the most powerful kingdoms in the Universe and also one of the most despised men in space. Humiliated and tortured on a daily basis to keep his family safe no one really knows the true Darling Cruel, not even the woman he loves, Zarya , the leader of the rebels who oppose his family rule and knows him as Kere, an ally to her cause. But, her love for Darling is tested when her men drag him to her in chains without his mask.....and she fails with devastating consequences.

I admit I was highly skeptical about this book, I mean Darling was gay right? So what's he doing with a girlfriend? I was told it would all be explained in the book to my complete satisfaction, and I admit I am not as devastated as I thought I would be. In any other authors work apart from Sherrilyn Kenyon's I may have still been disgruntled, but been as Ms Kenyon seems to take great delight in torturing her heroes more then any other author I have ever read, her coming up with Darling being gay in a severely homophobic society who enjoys watching his pain and humiliation kind of makes sense.

But despite being apprehensive about the gay thing, I have been looking forward to this book, although I don't really like her Dark Hunter series (there are exceptions, Vane and Wren yum!) the League series has captured my imagination. Logically I know that it is basically Dark Hunters -in -Space, but something about it makes me pre-order each new book in the series. This book wasn't that much different from the others, only to time it was Darling's turn on the rack and Zarya's turn to sooth him, and I liked both of them and they definitely had on the page chemistry. I did find their relationship a little bit hard to swallow at first because of previous events, but by the end, much like the gay issue, I accepted it.

What I liked most about this book was the way at the end the game has been changed, and I can't wait to see the impact this has on the next book In the series, which I believe in Hauk's although it looks like there will be a novella for Maris towards the end of year.

Although this wasn't much different from any of the other books in the series, I did enjoy it and will be eagerly waiting for the next book.

ARC Review: Time Untime by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Time Untime
by Sherrilyn Kenyon
(Dark Hunter # 17)

Another fabulous read from the Dark Hunter series and the feel of the story reminds me of Kenyon’s earlier DH books. Yes, the tortured hero and heroine strong enough to heal him, the Dark Hunters camaraderie, sarcastic humor, the funny banter, action, battle between good and evil, and a sigh inducing romance.

But this book differs from the rest as the Atlantean and Greek mythology background is now combined with the Mayan mythology. It is full of background information and can be a bit overwhelming but it did not hinder what I felt for the book. I loved every bit of it.

Renegade Waya (Makah’alay Omawaya in his previous life) or Ren was the Guardian but lost his position to his conniving brother, Cayote. Mentally and physically abused by his father and brother, he became a loner and detached. Even as a Dark Hunter, he just never trusted anyone. Whereas Kateri is just out in the open, honest and more than willing to put herself out there. And when she got to know Ren her loving side was able to soften him up to trust again. I may have made her sound like a girly girl but let me assure you, she can hold her own in battle. Ren and Kateri are perfect of each other. They’re journey to their HEA was a rough journey but damn they totally pull it off. The intimate scenes were not as hot but I felt thier romance grow to love within a timely manner. In fact, their love story made me cry. Kenyon was good to put these two together.

She also does a wonderful job with recap and while doing so, we get the chance see other Dark Hunters. Such as Talon, Sunshine, Sasha, Urian, Alexion and I'm sure I'm not alone when I say my heart skips a beat when Ash and Nick's name is mention on the page. Nick really had softened up a bit in this book and Ash has a new look I’m not sure I like. But as he and Tory said “it will grow back”. I’ve really missed him. I’m sure we’ll get a good amount of him in the next book, “Stixx” released August 6, 2013. And my prediction is that it will be as impressive as Acheron's book. I mean, almost as impressive. =)

Review: Where's My Hero? by Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn & Kinley MacGregor

Where's My Hero?
by Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn & Kinley MacGregor
#2.5 Gamblers

I love the idea of this anthology, short stories about secondary characters from other books getting their HEAs. I find I end up loving a well drawn secondary character almost as much as the main ones so I thought this was a fabulous idea!

Against the Odds by Lisa Kleypas

This novella was the reason I was so eager to read this anthology, I am a huge fan of Lisa Kleypas, and Dreaming of You is one of my favourite books, so seeing a novella that has my book husband Derek Craven in it had me very excited. Lydia, is Derek and Sara's daughter and like her father she is very mathmatically minded but also very sensible and makes decisions using her head and not her heart. But, could this be the right thing to do when chosing a husband?

Although short I did really enjoy this. With a relatively small number of pages Lisa Kleypas created a likable hero and heroine who had explosive chemistry and deep feelings for one another. And, it was not only great to see a new romance blossom, but also to see Sara and Derek 20 years later and still just as much in love. If you are a fan of Lisa Kleypas this is a must read, and if you haven't read her before this is a nice taster.

Midsummer's Knight by Kinley MacGregor aka Sherrilyn Kenyon

Before I start this review properly I should warn you that I am not really a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon's writing style, and that is the main problem I have with her books and unfortunately this book was no different. I liked the idea of two people falling in love through letters and then finally coming face to face, it was very sweet, but, as I always do, I found the writing over the top and a little cheesy.

If you are a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon/Kinley MacGregor though you will love this book, and you shoudl definietly read it, even as someone who isn't a fan I still liked reading it, but I did find myself a little relieved when it ended.

A Tale of Two Sisters by Julia Quinn

I love a good Julia Quinn book! She can write the most amusing light hearted banter and sweet romances, making her books so readable that I find I have finished them before I have even realised I have begun! A Tale of Two Sisters is very much the same, a funny smart girl and a sightly wicked but essentially nice guy who fall in love with eachother. If this were a full length novel I would have a few issues with how quickly they managed to fall in love, but as it was a novella I find that it is much easier to forgive.

A great quick read that will have you chuckling to yourself!

Review: Kiss of the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Kiss of the Night
by Sherrilyn Kenyon
(Dark-Hunter # 4)

What do you do when every person you meet will forget you in moments? Wulf Tryggvasen, fierce Viking warrior and Dark Hunter lives this life everyday where amnesia affects all those he meets. The only person who remembers him are his DH buddies and Chris, his only blood relative.

But when Cassandra Peters recalls him after the stunt he pulled in a club, Wulf is intrigued by her. Their relationship starts off smoking hot in a bed surrounded by mirrors, but it’s more than just sex between Wulf and Cassandra. As half Apollite, Cassandra is cursed to die and this is a problem because she is the last remaining person of the Apollo line.
Though I liked Wulf and Cassandra together, I can’t say that there were my favorite couple of the series. But that is not to say that their story is not filled with heart or the usual action-packed scenes that Kenyon always provides her readers. All that is in this book and more.

I really enjoyed the side characters in this book, particularly Urien and Phoebe. I thought they had great presence and nice little love story themselves in this book. I wished we could have read more about them.
Acheron has some great moments in this book. A lot of the most memorable lines came from him and it was nice (but also heartbreaking) to read about him. I just adore Acheron!
Speaking of the other DH guys, we see a bit of them in this book. All the previous guys who have their stories told already appear in this book to fight full force against the bad guys. Kenyon also does a great job of intertwining this book with Talon’s, where both stories are occurring at the same time. I just love it when authors do this!
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I’m really looking forward to the next book, NIGHT PLAY which is Vane’s book! Yay!

Review: Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon

3.5 Feathers
Fantasy Lover
by Sherrilyn Kenyon
(Dark Hunter # 0)

I’m late on this one, I know. But better late than never, right?

The premise of Fantasy Lover is so unique and genius that I’m baffled to find that no other author has attempted to write something like this before. A Greek sex god emerges from a book to fulfill all of a woman’s sexual needs until the next full moon. Really, what more could a romance reader ask for? If only it were true...

I enjoyed Julian and reading about his tortured past. Cursed forever and trapped in a book, he is forever under the command of his summoner, fulfilling every sexual desire they may have. Blessed with good looks but treated as an object, Julian sees his appearance as a reminder of what causes him so much pain. I really enjoyed reading about his backstory. Filled with lots of drama and pain, it certainly grips you in until you turn that last page. And all that Greek mythology? Wow. I may have been like Grace and slept through those classes in school, but reading about them now makes me wish I paid more attention back then!

Grace is a sex therapist, so I obviously loved her from the beginning. I’m a little biased since I went to school for the same thing (therapy, not sex). Grace is a very likeable character. I liked that she saw Julian as a person and not just some sexual object. Hurt by her own experiences, she knows how painful it can be to be seen as an object to be used.

The emotions roll throughout this story. It’s deep and provoking and pulls on those heartstrings, but I can’t help but think that some parts were a little too melodramatic for my taste. For instance, the whole thing about having a woman of Alexander being the only one to have the ability to break the spell and what do you know, Grace’s surname is Alexander!! And some of the scenes from Julian’s past were also very theatric. Sometimes too much for my taste. Also, what are the chances of a patient stalking you and getting caught in an elevator with him? Close to hmm...zero point zero!

Nevertheless, Fantasy Lover is a really good book. If this is any indication to the type of work for the rest of the series, then I’m going to need a bigger book shelf! This is a biiiiiiiiiiiiig series!
