*Annie makes grabby hands* WANNNNT!

Here's a fantastic teaser excerpt to further torture  indulge readers....
Lieutenant Detective Luke Hanover had been away from the San Francisco Police Department for exactly one day of his three week leave and already he’d lost his edge, walking into his grandma’s Lucky Harbor beach house to find a B&E perp standing in the kitchen.
She sure as hell was the prettiest petty thief he’d ever come across, at least from the back since she was wearing nothing but a white lace bra and a tiny scrap of matching white lace panties.
“You have some nerve you… you ratfink bastard,” she snapped into her cell phone, waving her free hand for emphasis, her long, wildly wavy brown hair flying around her head as she moved.
And that wasn’t all that moved. She was a bombshell, all sweet, womanly curves, barely contained in her undies.
“I want you to know,” she went on furiously, still not seeing Luke, “there’s no way in hell I’m accepting your break-up message. You hear me, Teddy? I’m not accepting it because I’m breaking up with you. And while we’re at it, who even does that? Who breaks up with someone by text? I’ll tell you who, Teddy, a real jerk, that’s who– Hello? Dammit!”
Pulling the phone from her ear, she stared at the screen and then punched a few keys before whipping it back up to her ear. “Your voice mail cut me off before I finished,” she said. “You having sex in your office while I was in the building? Totally cliché. But not telling me that you weren’t planning to resign the lease? That’s just rotten to the core, Teddy. And don’t bother calling me back on this. Oh, wait, that’s right, you don’t call – you text!” She punched the “off” button on her phone and tossed it to the counter, hands on hips, steam coming out her ears. Then she thunked her forehead against the refrigerator a few times before going stock still, her head pressed to the cool, steel door.
Had she knocked herself out? Luke wondered.
“It’s just one bad day,” she whispered, still in the perfect position for him to pat her down for weapons.
Not that she was carrying – well, except for that lethal bod.
“Just one really rotten, badass day,” she repeated softly, and Luke had to disagree.
“Not from where I’m standing,” he said.

Interview and Giveaway with Carrie Vaughn

Carrie Vaughn

You might've seen or heard of a series called Kitty Norville.  One of the most original and fresh series in UF that manages to stay not too dark, not too mushy and always with a lot of adventure.  Ms. Vaughn just released KITTY STEALS THE SHOW, the tenth book in the series, and is here today so that we can help celebrate with her!  Please be sure to give Carrie a warm welcome to UTC

Thank you so much for taking time to share with us today!

Thank you for inviting me!

Your KITTY NORVILLE series has some of the most original plots I've read in UF without being dark.  What do you think is key to keep the plots fresh and readers interested after writing so many books in a series?

I'm always on the lookout for material, and I try to set myself a challenge with each book. I have a list of things I've wanted to do with the character and the series, and part of that list are stories that I just think need to happen in a world like this, where the supernatural is real. That's how Kitty Steals the Show came about -- if the NIH announced the existence of vampirism, you can bet there'd be a scientific conference about it in a few years. For Kitty's Big Trouble, I really wanted to focus on a non-European folklore tradition, so I sent Kitty to San Francisco's Chinatown and delved a bit into some Chinese folklore and mythology. By doing this kind of research and by following Kitty's progress and growth through this world, I'm pretty much always going to have new ideas to write about.

Congratulations on signing for another four books after book 10! Us readers are very excited about that. Where do you see the series going from here?

I introduced an ongoing story and a big bad guy with Roman and the Long Game, and I'm going to be developing that further. I also have Kitty dealing with issues at home and the pack. The next two books are already written, so I'm well on my way with those projects.

What can you tell us about KITTY STEALS THE SHOW?

Kitty and crew go to London for the First International Conference on Paranatural studies. She meets the Master vampire of London, Britain's alpha werewolf, and many other international figures -- as well as some old faces whom readers should be pleased to see. Chaos pretty much ensues, as usual.

For someone who hasn't read your series yet, how would you describe it and how do you see it stands apart from others?

My one line description: Kitty is a werewolf who hosts a talk radio advice show for the supernaturally disadvantaged. How does it stand apart? Kitty's not a typical gun and katana wielding kick ass heroine. She's strong without being constantly violent. The series focuses on humor and adventure rather than sex -- for some people that's a plus, for some it's a minus, but that's what it is.

I have to ask this because I have a soft spot for Cormac. At the beginning of the series there was a connection between Kitty and Cormac that, in my opinion, needed to be explored because there were all kinds of sparks flying. However that's not what has happened even though they care for each other.  How do you see these two in the past and what can we expect in the future? Is there hope?

This is a great example of the story I wanted to tell taking the series in a direction that I wasn't expecting. Lots of people love Cormac and really want Cormac and Kitty to be together, but in the end that didn't fit with the story that unfolded. How that happened takes a while to explain -- basically, two of the things on my "list" of stories I wanted to tell: I wanted to send my badass bounty hunter to jail, because that's something that never happens in these kind of books, but it's something that happens in the real world. So I did that. The other thing I wanted to do was make Kitty take care of someone important in her life who'd been attacked by a werewolf the way she was. My first thought was to have Cormac be that person, but I realized that if Cormac were ever infected with lycanthropy, he'd kill himself. He just would, that's his nature, and I'd have had to change his character entirely to have him live as a werewolf. So, that was out. But by infecting Ben, I got to have it impact both Cormac and Kitty, which was an incredibly interesting story for me to tell. After that, things ran their course and I just followed. At that point I decided it would be interesting to have Kitty in a challenging but stable relationship.

I'm not very interested in love triangle plots -- I've seen it in lots of other books, and I've stopped reading other series when the triangles got out of hand. So I decided to go a different route. I wasn't going to boot Cormac out entirely because he's a great character who's fun to write, so I decided to give him his own adventures while in prison. The novella in Kitty's Greatest Hits came out of that.

I know a lot of people are disappointed that I didn't do anything with those initial sparks, and all I can really say is my muse and I were drawn to other stories. He's a fun character and those scenes in the first book were fun, but there's a point where Cormac's own character worked against him -- he's sexy, but he's fundamentally terrible boyfriend material and I don't think it ever would have worked out between them in the long term. Cormac would never agree to have Thanksgiving dinner with Kitty's family, for example, and that would make her sad.

Cormac himself has also gone through a change due to things that have happened, which in a way makes me sad for him. Anything you can tell us about what we can expect from Cormac?

I'm planning on writing a novel about Cormac, from his point of view, as one of the next four in the series. We'll get a very good look into his new situation. As people say, when one door closes, another opens, and I've found myself very much intrigued by the idea of writing a "buddy detective" story in which one of the buddies is disembodied. It'll be fun. I'm actually not sad for him -- he's probably more stable than he has been in his whole life at this point.

I know favorites are always hard but do you have a favorite scene or plot in any of your books?

Each book has scenes that make me smile. I hate to be specific, but they're usually scenes that were very strong in my imagination, and then managed to be equally strong on the page. In Kitty Steals the Show, I love just about every scene with the Master of London, because he was such a fun character to write.

You are attending Comic Con. If you could dress up as anyone or anything, what would you pick? And who would you be excited to see and have a fangirl moment for?

I'm going to meet Nathan Fillion someday. I just am. And I'll squee. There's a whole list of people I'll squee over, actually. I have a lot of fangirl moments at Comic Con.

I might dress as the Baroness from GI Joe someday…

Do you have a writing process? Do you have to listen to music, have complete silence, write only on a full moon?

Wow, if I only wrote on the full moon nothing would ever get done. I write a little bit every day, I usually listen to music. I jump around in the story, I usually have a couple of projects going at once, a outline a little bit and revise a lot. I daydream a lot.

You are hosting a dinner party. If given the chance to invite any authors, who would you invite?

Do they have to be alive? Because my first thought is Jane Austen, Emily Dickinson, and Sylvia Plath. I have no idea what we'd talk about, but I bet it'd be cool.

Kitty has been tapped as the keynote speaker for the First International Conference on Paranatural Studies, taking place in London. The conference brings together scientists, activists, protestors, and supernatural beings from all over the world—and Kitty, Ben, and Cormac are right in the middle of it.

Master vampires from dozens of cities have also gathered in London for a conference of their own. With the help of the Master of London, Kitty gets more of a glimpse into the Long Game—a power struggle among vampires that has been going on for centuries—than she ever has before. In her search for answers, Kitty has the help of some old allies, and meets some new ones, such as Caleb, the alpha werewolf of the British Isles. The conference has also attracted some old enemies, who’ve set their sights on her and her friends.

All the world’s a stage, and Kitty’s just stepped into the spotlight.

ARC Review: Kitty Steals the Show by Carrie Vaughn

Kitty Steals the Show
by Carrie Vaughn
(Kitty Norville # 10)

Original and action packed, with a lot of familiar faces that I loved seeing again!  Carrie Vaughn takes Kitty to London.  Why?  To participate in the First International Conference of Paranatural Studies.  Along for the ride are Ben and Cormac, of course.  And wherever Kitty goes, trouble arises.

In between trying to attend some of the interesting lectures, being the keynote speaker for the conference (oh yeah, she still has to write that speech!) and sightseeing in wonderful London (she even gets to meet a vampire who was friends with Shakespeare), Kitty finds herself in the middle of a vampire war.  You guessed it, Roman.  He's been the predominant bad guy in town and it seems that with each passing book he's getting closer and closer to setting up a major disaster for the supernatural community.

New and old faces show up and this was one of my favorite things about this book.  I had a crush on Luiz when Kitty had a little fling with him around the second book in this series (I mean....he purrs!) and it was great to see him at the conference.  He even managed to get a reaction out of straight-laced Ben.  Yes, he was jealous.

So that brings me to Kitty and Ben.  I have grown accustomed to their relationship and it was a nice change to see some passion from Ben.  I do see him as the quiet type that has to go along with whatever trouble Kitty finds and sometimes just has to get her out.  But he showed some claws in this book.  I was very impressed with him and with the dynamic of his and Kitty's marriage.  I am starting to see how they do work together, that they care about one another and that they are the perfect compliment to each other.

Then there's Cormac.  It pains me to say this, I am still unhappy with how his character was changed.  But I did enjoy that he goes looking for Amelia's old home and family.  Amelia being back in Britain after such a long time is not just concerned with how the country has changed, there is something she wants from her home and she finds living relatives of hers.  This was a bit bittersweet and maybe have even gotten a tear out of me.  Even though it took Cormac out of the picture for quite a bit of the book, which makes me unhappy.

I've gone through the ups and downs this series has brought for me.  I've learned to deal with the fact that the direction the series has gone in and the things that have happened may have not been what I wanted.  But even after all those things, Carrie Vaughn manages to write an entertaining story and characters that you enjoy reading about.  What's to come next?  Well, with Kitty's mind overflowing with conspiracy theories, you never know who she'll try to go after next.

Review: Hex Appeal (anthology)

Hex Appeal
by Ilona Andrews, Jim Butcher, Rachel Caine, Carole Nelson Douglas, P.N. Elrod, Simon R. Green, Lori Handeland, Erica Hayes and Carrie Vaughn

Well the first thing that made me want to read this book was the cover.  Yeah I admit it.  The second thing?  ILONA ANDREWS!  Quite frankly, anthologies can be a good place to find new authors to read or just a collection of stories that are hard to develop because they are so short.  As you can see by the number of authors in this anthology, yes, the stories were short.  But some managed to convey enough of the story where I didn't feel anything was missing.

RETRIBUTION CLAUSE BY ILONA ANDREWS - 4 STARS
This story is set in the Kate Daniels world although there is no Kate or any of the characters we know.  It was actually interesting to see a different setting than Atlanta as this story takes place in Philadelphia.  It also features Saiman's frost giant cousin Adam.  Adam is an insurance adjuster and as such, he will have to enforce the retribution clause in the policy of a client.  What does that mean?  Him and his partner Siroun have to go and kill whoever killed her.  Adam and Siroun are great characters, they work well together and there's a definite attraction as well.  The story was very interesting and kept me hooked!  Another great one by Ilona Andrews.

BIGFOOT ON CAMPUS BY JIM BUTCHER - 4 STARS
I am probably one of the few people that haven't read the Dresden Files.  I've always wondered about the series but didn't get to it yet.  And this small taste of Jim Butcher's writing style and of Harry Dresden himself, well...completely wetted my appetite!  I loved this story, I loved Harry, and I loved Jim's storytelling.  I was sucked in from the beginning.  Harry is hired by Bigfoot to go protect his son, who is away at college.  Catch is Bigfoot has never officially met his son, and his son doesn't know his heritage, nor the danger he is currently in.  Awesome story!

HOLLY'S BALM BY RACHEL CAINE - 3.5 STARS
Having not read any stories by Rachel Caine that this would be even somewhat related to, I had no background for it but it was still a pretty enjoyable story standalone.  Holly is a resurrection witch, and yes that means she can resurrect the dead.  Her powers are used in police investigations sometimes to ask the victims about their death.  She also has an undead (resurrected) boyfriend who, for some reason, hasn't gone away.  Some magic is keeping him alive again and with her.  Holly is now called in to investigate a crime that resembles one she had already investigated.  Turns out the killer found a witch to resurrect his old victims and live his killings all over again, and now Holly has to figure out who is helping him and how to stop them.

SNOW JOB BY CAROLE NELSON DOUGLAS - 2 STARS
Snow is a rock star. Snow goes missing somehow.  Delilah is a paranormal investigator and now has to find a way to rescue Snow, even though she didn't have a good relationship with him.  I was overwhelmed with this story.  Not having read anything by this author or in this series, I was lost and a lot of information was thrown in.  Maybe just not my thing.

OUTSIDE THE BOX BY P.N. ELROD - 2 STARS
Maybe this was just not my thing but I didn't enjoy this story.  It's the first I read from this author (at least that I can remember).  The story is about a witch that works as a to register newly risen vampires.  This one vampire she's dealing with now is just more than she bargained for.

HOW DO YOU FEEL BY SIMON R. GREEN - 3 STARS
I've read other Simon R. Green short stories in anthologies and I think I've come to the realization that his writing is not so much my preference style.  However this story was entertaining, although a bit dark.  It's about Dead Boy.  He's been dead for a long time and just kind of existed all that time, not feeling anything and missing it, never thinking about the mugging that took his life.  Until someone comes up to him and tells him his death wasn't an accident and Dead Boy is looking for revenge.

THERE WILL BE DEMONS BY LORI HANDELAND - 3 STARS
Dhampirs, skinwalkers, fairies and fallen angels... Oh my!  This was a bit unremarkable but not bad.  I did have a hard time finding it interesting at the beginning, but basically Summer is a fairy and along with Jimmy and Sawyer they work for a demon killing organization and will go on a mission together.  There's something about soulmates but it wasn't too clear to me, maybe I just had to read the series to understand it more.

CHERRY KISSES BY ERICA HAYES - 2 STARS
Going to hell takes on a whole new meaning when you actually have to go to hell to recover an amulet.    I really didn't connect with this story.

THE ARCANE ART OF MISDIRECTION BY CARRIE VAUGHN - 4 STARS
Yes, this is part of the Kitty Norville series.  Is Kitty in it? No.  Much in the same way as the Ilona Andrews story, this is set in the world but there's no active participation from the main series characters.  Although we did see Odysseus Grant and the story is set in Vegas, which we visited in one of Kitty's books.  Probably would be enjoyed by someone who hasn't read the series.

Review: Kitty's Big Trouble by Carrie Vaughn

Kitty's Big Trouble
by Carrie Vaughn
(Kitty Norville # 9)

Well this just pains me.  I think this series is very original as far as the storylines and the things Kitty encounters and has to go through.  More so than maybe any other UF series out there.  Everything is done with just enough action, a little humor and a great set of characters that you can't help but love.  But somehow it has gotten to the point where it's not working as well for me.

This in big part is due to the fact that in book one I fell in love with Cormac.  He's tough, sexy, badass, a bad boy shifter killer.  And he had this instant, sparks-flying everywhere connection with Kitty.  And then his cousin Ben got bit and turned into a werewolf and he brought him to Kitty to help through the transition.  And it all went downhill from there between these two.

Now Cormac is back in the story but he is SOOOOOO not him.  Granted he is kind of possessed, but it almost pains me to read parts about him and how different he's become.  Especially in this book.  Kitty remembers the way Cormac used to smell, the way she always went to him first when there was an issue and she wanted advice.  It was just hard to read that being a Kitty/Cormac hopeful.

I have come to terms with the fact that Kitty is with Ben.  He is more of a beta male in my eyes and that's not my favorite type of hero.  I definietely see her as more dominant than him, but he does love her.

So now onto this story.  Yes, rant over about what apparently will never be.  Kitty, being curious and nosy as always goes looking for proof that some important historical figure was in fact a werewolf.  While she's researching that (and dragging Cormac and Ben along) they come across Anastasia.  She enlists them to help stop Roman from taking an ancient artifact with immense power.  Action pact as usual and another great installment that would make a kick ass movie if they ever made one!

TEAM CORMAC!

Sorry that just came out of nowhere...

Review: Kitty Goes To War by Carrie Vaughn

Kitty Goes To War
by Carrie Vaughn
(Kitty Norville # 8)

Just as the title would make you guess, Kitty is being called on to help the military. Or well, some soldiers who are now werewolves and lost their alpha. Sort of like a rehabilitation.

While that is going on of course Kitty has to get in trouble. She starts off by asking her listeners to report any suspicious vamp activity at any Speedy Mart locations. Of course the owner right away sues her and now she has to prove that she had basis to suspect as her defense.

For this she enlists the help and expertise of Cormac. *sigh* I'll come back to him in a bit. So Cormac somehow manages to uncover that the owner of Speedy Mart is actually using magic to create major weather-related catastrophes and he's now planning a huge blizzard.

Again I love how Kitty can get into these situations, still manage to be strong and come out on top. Ben is there to support her. Her pack is loyal to her. It was nice to see that people had her back and her circle of influence is expanding.

And then that brings me back to Cormac. Even though I really enjoyed the storyline and the action and suspense of the whole book I was sadly traumatized to see this new shadow-of-a-person that Cormac has become. Where is my badass, sexy as hell, bad boy who smells like leather and gun powder?!?!? I was not entirely happy with the explanation for his behavior and I hope and pray that in the next book this gets resolved. I still feel that his feelings for Kitty where left unresolved and Kitty's feeling for him as well. This is still hanging over their heads and I feel some sort of tension still there. Can we please get some sort of closure? It just breaks my heart to hear him say that she looked happy with Ben. I wanted to shake Kitty right there and then. But this is all in my head. I know that's probably not the direction the series will go in and at some point, maybe I'll come to terms with it.

A great, action-packed installment and I can't wait for the next.

Review: Kitty's House of Horrors by Carrie Vaughn

Kitty's House of Horrors
by Carrie Vaughn
(Kitty Norville # 7)

Kitty knows how to get in trouble! I really enjoyed this installment of the Kitty Norville series. Why? Because the storyline was so different from anything I've read! Carrie Vaughn manages to keep this series fresh and interesting, throwing scenarios at Kitty that, even though deal with the same general ideas, are still original.

So what's Kitty's latest mess? She's always looking for a way to get some media exposure and she's being offered to participate in a reality show. Put a few supernaturals in a house with one skeptic human and they are supposed to change his beliefs that they're all full of shit without doing the obvious (ie shifting).

What starts out as a fun idea changes into a weird situation where some powerful supernaturals are being tested and eventually it turns into a Survivor show. Supernaturals are being killed one by one but by whom, and more importantly why?

And while Kitty is off by herself trying to stay alive, back on the home front Cormac is actually being released from jail. OMG Finally! You know what I realized with this book? Two things really. The first is that Kitty always thinks of Cormac. Constantly. He keeps her alive through this whole ordeal. What would Cormac do? And the second thing is that I have finally come to terms with the fact that Kitty and Ben love each other. Their relationship will never be the passionate, loving relationship I expect to see in the main couple of a series, not even close to the potential that I still could see between Kitty and Cormac, but if we are never to have that, then I might be ok with Ben by her side. He is loyal and he will protect her. He keeps her grounded.

A new storyline is introduced that I'm sure will resurface in future books, and it has to do with the vampires, so I'm very curious to see where this will lead us. And of course I can't wait to get to the next book, if nothing else because I can get some Cormac in action! Yeah baby!

Review: Kitty Raises Hell by Carrie Vaughn

3.5 Feathers
Kitty Raises Hell
by Carrie Vaughn
(Kitty Norville # 6)

In continuing with the media style unique storylines I have come to expect from Kitty, radio talk show host extraordinaire, in this installment she joins forces with a paranormal reality TV show.

Paradox PI is a group of "psychics" and "ghost busters". They go around haunted houses and track down ghost activity, feel for a presence, etc. When they come to town, Kitty of course wants in on the action. She wants an interview, they want her on the show. What better way than to have the interview live while they work and as their shows gets recorded.

Sounds simple and entertaining, right? But of course, nothing is simple in Kitty's life. Someone is after her again. This time is an entity that she'll have to figure out what, who and why wants to harm her, and maybe go through great lengths to protect those she loves. Even if that means dealing with the devil (or vampire, as it may be).

Vampire intrigue, a psychic who uses a ouija board to talk to ghosts, and strangers from Kitty's past, but sadly, a Cormac sized hole. Although the story was great, I made the grave mistake, apparently, of falling in love with Cormac early on in this series only to have him disappear for a great part of it. Yes, Ben loves Kitty, but sometimes that is not enough for me. We'll see what craziness Kitty can get into next.
