ARC Review: Shades of Temptation by Virna DePaul

Shades of Temptation
by Virna DePaul
(SIG # 2)

Shades of Temptation is the second installment of the Special Investigations Group series. Though I thoroughly enjoyed Shades of Desire (SIG #1), this book was so much better.

Agent Carrie Ward was in the Army, Swat, and Sniper Olympian; now she is the only woman member of SIG. With her experience, she is up for taking a more serious case; Serial Killer and/or possible Copy Cat. This murder is definitely more than meets the eye and it was great to see Carrie go through the motions of the investigation. I found myself trying to solve it with her as I read on. I truly enjoy Carrie as the heroine. She is a woman trying to prove herself in a man’s world but as you know, that comes with a price and hardships. She was a dichotomy of strength and weakness and it was great to watch her learn the difference and learn to accept help when needed. When she finally succumbed, not only she received the right help, she even found herself a man who will love her for all of who she is.

Agent Jase Tyler is an experience member of SIG, well respected by his peers and well known for his dating background. Not only that women drooled over him, men look at him with envy. This guy is Alpha but not overbearing by the least. I love that about him. He knew when to step back and when to step up when it came to Carrie.
The sexual tension between Jase and Carrie was undeniable and unavoidable since they worked close together. The suspense part was actually interesting to follow. It was like watching a good movie. It was bit gruesome at times as the murder scene descriptions were graphic and the psychopath’s thoughts were a bit disturbing. But damn it, I could not stop myself from reading on and cheering for Carrie and Jase to solve it.

Overall, Shades of Temptation is heart pounding Romantic Suspense by Ms. DePaul, a highly recommended book and a very nice author to follow.

Author Override: Virna DePaul

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

The Hero You WON’T See In Shades Of Desire

My brand tagline is “Brave the darkness, discover the light.” I adore redeemed characters and a satisfying HEA, but I especially love making my characters work for these things. However, sometimes I go a little overboard on the “dark” aspects of my stories. Such was the case with my manuscript, Lights Out, which ultimately became Shades Of Desire, my recent release with HQN.

Several years ago, I came up with the idea of a famous photographer who loses her vision and must help solve a murder investigation. I wrote and rewrote the first few chapters several times, but the story always seemed a bit off. Once I sold the story to my editor, she told me why—I’d created a heroine dealing with a dark tragedy but I’d also created a hero with arguably even darker issues (he’d lost his only son to leukemia, been abandoned by his wife, and then had to face a serial killer while on the edge of burn out). Perfectly good backstory, but combined with other dark elements in the story, it was just too much, especially for a romance. It took someone else pointing this out to me and giving me some guidance, but toning down is what this particular story needed.

Do you like outtakes? Just for fun, I thought I’d attach an old scene from Lights Out that didn’t make it into Shades Of Desire. This shows my hero on the edge and taking out his emotional torment on the job. I concluded that even with his internal suffering, some readers might just find his behavior too un-hero-like to take.

DELETED SCENE FROM LIGHTS OUT:

It was hard to forget about death when the damn thing refused to leave you alone.
Even as Jack Talbert’s meaty fist slammed his head back and split his lip, Detective Liam “Mac” McKenzie barely felt any pain. Certainly not enough to stifle the echo of words in his head.
My place is with the dead.

My place is with you.

In defiance of those words, Mac swiped his hand across his lip, then shook his head.

He was barely bleeding. Smiling, he motioned Talbert on. “You’re disappointing me, Talbert. I know you can do better than that.”

Talbert, breath heaving from their struggles, backed up, eyes wide with disbelief. He didn’t have far to go. They’d chased him into a dead-end alley, but Talbert hadn’t given up. Mac would be damned if he let him now.
Reading his mind, Talbert shook his head. “You’re crazy, McKenzie. I surrender. Take me in.”

“Yeah, Mac. Enough of this—“

Mac glared at his temporary partner, Jason Tyler, who stood a few feet away, muscles tensed, one hand on the butt of his gun and the other raised with his radio at the ready. Calmly, Mac explained, “The bastard resisted arrest.”

“He’s giving up.”

“Not yet,” Mac insisted.

Jason fell silent, but the disgust in his eyes spoke for him.

Mac didn’t give a shit. He wanted to release the tight rein he normally kept on his emotions. The ruthless control he used to dull the grief and regret that was nevertheless always there. He was going to take advantage of the opportunity.

My place is with the dead.

Turning back to Talbert, Mac smiled once more. “Now hit me again. And this time, put some power behind it.”

****

I hope you enjoyed the deleted scene. I’ll probably always write darker stories. As such, I can’t censor myself during the writing process. I push the envelope and go where the story takes me. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. The key is being flexible and, after the story is written, being open minded enough to view things another way.

SHADES OF DESIRE:
Book 1 in the Special Investigations Group Series, available at Amazon, B&N, Powell’s and Indie Bound

Natalie Jones is the lucky survivor of an elusive killer who preys on young women and then disappears from view. And since her harrowing ordeal, the once gutsy photojournalist has remained isolated in her home, paralyzed by fear and her failing vision.

Special Agent Liam “Mac” McKenzie has scars of his own. But despite his efforts to ignore the attraction that simmers between him and Natalie, he needs her help to catch a predator. Soon, they will forge a tentative alliance—charged with desire.

Through a soft-focus lens, Natalie dares to envision a future with Mac beyond the investigation...never guessing that the clues hidden within her photographs are drawing them into an explosive confrontation with a madman.

ARC Review: Shades of Desire by Virna DePaul

Shades of Desire
by Virna DePaul

Natalie Jones, an accomplished photographer is now partially blind due to a degenerative eye disease. But with an abused past and the progression of her disease, she is left fighting a dichotomy of weak and being strong willed. Though she continues battling this disease and copes well enough, she has become recluse. To make it worse, she was physically attacked in the safety of her own home. And to put cherry on the top, same man is now stalking her with a chance that he has murdered just recently. Protection from this sick-o will be a definite need.

Liam McKenzie aka Mac from the Special Investigations Group (SIG) is assigned to handle Natalie’s case. He is well known for what he does and very good at his job. With his past of failed relationships, Mac has set his mind concentrating on his career and having a relationship is just unthinkable, until he meets her.

I love how Ms. DePaul was able to bring an alpha male in current time story. Mac is over protective, possessive, upfront with his desires and very comfortable with his sexuality. Rawr! And Natalie, as a disabled heroine, IMO is still a strong leading lady. Despite her disability, she is trying her best to cope with everything that has gone wrong in her life.

Mac and Natalie's attraction for each other was real and palpable. Even the suspense part of the story is just too believable, as I know it can happen in real life. I enjoyed the multiple points of views, especially the POV of the perp(s) of the story. Reading what was going on in his mind was a bit disturbing. I remember learning in college about certain mental illness that can lead to committing certain crimes. Scary sh*t!

I'm new to Romantic suspense genre but I felt that this book had just the right amount of suspense and romance. I have yet to read Ms. DePaul's Para Op series but this one is an auto follow for me as well as Ms. DePaul’s vamp series, Beyond Human Novellas.

CHOSEN BY SIN Virtual Book Tour: Virna DePaul

Welcome to stop #6 in my blog tour For Chosen By Sin (Para-Ops #3).

Thank you to Under The Covers Book Blog for having me here today!  This tour focuses on my writing and my paranormal series, but also my Twelve Resolutions for 2012, as well as the resolutions of my hero in Chosen By Sin, werebeast Dex Hunt. Those of you who know Dex know he's a bit...difficult, so I'm curious to see what he comes up with. (Psst: Dex doesn't actually know it, but his “resolutions” are more like a Twelve-Step Program designed by me to get him to his HEA).

I'll be giving away a prize to one commenter from this blog stop, but I'm also giving away one grand prize to one blog tour follower.  See the giveaway details below! :)

The Para-Ops Series: Five years after the Second Civil War ends, humans and Otherborn—humanlike creatures with superhuman DNA—still struggle for peace. To ensure the continued rights of both, the FBI forms a Para-Ops team with a unique set of skills.  (Chosen By Blood (Book 1), Chosen By Fate (Book 2))

So what's Resolution #6 for me?
Look Presentable In The Morning

Seriously.  First thing in the morning, I get my kids ready for school.  After (maybe) showering and brushing my teeth and throwing on something comfortable (i.e., sweats are usually involved), I drive them to school then head back home.  Usually, I'll start writing or catching up with other business.  Next thing I know, it's time to pick up the kids or someone comes to the door and I still look like I rolled out of bed, and not in a good way!  I've pretty much mastered stealth maneuvering so I won't run into anyone I know at these times.

And what's Resolution #6 for Dex Hunt?

Here's a hint from Chosen By Sin.

Until recently, the term f*** buddy had never meant anything to Dex. He’d always f***** for sheer pleasure—to receive it and to give it—but lately other needs drove him. With Lucy, his drive was friendship disguised with practicality. With Jes, his desire was driven by something alarmingly primal. Not just seeking pleasure for pleasure’s sake, but more like seeking to appease an intense, gnawing need.

With each hour that passed, he had to fight the urge to go to her. To take what he’d actually been prepared to take when he’d pushed her into that damn elevator. To give part of himself he’d never been tempted to give anyone else.
Physically and emotionally.

Hell, he hadn’t known what he wanted to do most—mark Jes with his scent and his seed, or beg her to hold him while telling him everything about her.

How was that for bat-s*** crazy?

Since he couldn’t afford even a temporary case of insanity, he’d managed to refrain from doing any of that.

Which meant for now, a f*** buddy was all he was going to be.

No one can accuse Dex of disloyalty, but the dude needs to get a clue.  Other relationships change once love enters the picture.  And I'd say this type of friendship is certainly a great example.  Sorry, Lucy, but Dex's 6th resolution is to commit himself, including sexually, to the woman he loves.

Want to see a trailer I made depicting the Para-Ops characters as I see them?  Dex is particularly yummy!  Here's the link: http://on.fb.me/z6Z8nI

Blurb for Chosen By Sin:
The longest life isn’t always the happiest one…

For now, werebeast Dex Hunt serves on the Para-Ops team, but his true purpose is to kill the werewolf leader he blames for his mother’s death. Biding his time, Dex keeps his emotional distance from his team members and anyone else he might care for, including a mysterious vampire he met in L.A.

As a doctor, vampire Jesmina Martin has dedicated her immortal life to healing others. As a scientific researcher, she’s trying to prolong life spans, in particular those of her adoptive dragon-shifter family and the werewolf who saved her as a child. Her greatest hope lies with Dex, a werebeast she believes can gift immortality to others.

Only Dex knows nothing about his gift or the fact Jesmina wants to harness it. After a passionate night together neither expects to see the other again. Weeks later, they are reunited in France and forced to acknowledge a fragile miracle—a new life struggling to survive. At the same time, they must stop a group of rebel shape-shifters hoping to unleash every demon in hell. But before Dex and Jesmina can save their child or the world, they must relinquish their secrets, face their fears, and open themselves to love.

ARC Review: Chosen by Sin by Virna DePaul

3.5 Feathers
Chosen by Sin
by Virna DePaul
(Para-Ops # 3)

After not enjoying the second book Chosen by Fate as much as I expected to, I have been pleasently surprised by this one! Focusing on Dex Hunter the werebeast of the Para Ops team he starts to look into the mysterious shapeshifters, the most persecuted species of Other, they are being connected to strange killings and the raising of dark spirits. With the help of Jesmina Martin, the mysterious vampire from Chosen by Fate, will they be able to stop what the shapeshifters are planning, the unleashing of hell on Earth...

So far this has been my favourite book in the series and Dex and Jes are my favourite couple. They both have dark pasts and a lot of emotional baggage to work through before they are able to move forward. If you like your H/h to.be full of tortured heroes and their equally angsty heroines you will love this book. This also seemed to give you a glimpse into the next book, hopefully about Lucy. When I first started this series Wraith was my favourite but as the series has gone along, surprisingly it is the quiet, loyal and compassionate feline mage, Lucy, that has now become my favourite, I really can't wait to read her well deserved HEA.

The case with the shapeshifters was also interesting to read about, although this was more romance driven then the other two book, the plot seemed to take a backseat to the love story, it still held my interest. But it was the development of the overarching plot of this series that I really enjoyed, I really can't wait to see what will happen with the Quorum and with Zeph.

Although I don't think this will become a favourite series it is an enjoyable read filled with enough sex and violence to hold my interest!

Review: A Vampire's Salvation by Virna DePaul

A Vampire's Salvation
by Virna DePaul
(Beyond Human Novellas)

Ms. DePaul outdid herself with this short erotic PNR story. She created a strong, alpha hero as well as a strong willed heroine.

Jacob La Costa Rios is a very sexy, very big, confident, alpha male vampire. He has lived just a little over 200 years and at this point in his life if he doesn’t find his mate he will become vulnerable, weakened and possibly get to the point of losing his immortality. He has been searching with no luck until he lands a job as lead security with the Governor and he meets HER. He works with her for days finding the right time to woo and seduce her.

Francesca Marie Stewart is a suit wearing, stiletto wearing, tree-hugging environmentalist who also works for the Governor. Heart broken at a very young age, she had sworn off men to concentrate on her career. However, Frankie is very human and cannot swear off her human needs. And when she meets Jake attraction is evident and she can barely contain herself from staring and lustfully imagining a night with him.

I love this couple, they are super steamy. Their coming together was rushed but its easily accepted as a “Love/Lust at first sight” situation. The sexual tension between them is just too much and when they finally get together…explosive! Just for mentioning sake, here are some lines from their hot convos.

~Jake: "...This isn't just about sex. This is about AMAZING sex. About me making you come so hard, so many times, you're going to think you're dying from the pleasure"
~“He wanted to shove his d*ck balls deep in…”
~”…battering ram outside the gates of her p*ssy”

See what I mean? But lust is not the only thing that hits this couple. Mating and love occurs deeply as well. There is a brewing plot to kill both Jake and Frankie for reasons they do not know. Both are of importance in their political worlds. Frankie being a human “green” advocate and Frankie, a vampire advocating for freedom. This world of politics between vampires and human is surely to go deeper in plot and a series I would watch for.

Characters I’d like to know more about.
Ronald Lassiter – the man who helped Frankie long, ago.
Chelsea Morgan – daughter of Ron? (dun dun dun-dunnnnn).
Dylan Cook-Works under Jake in security.
