Interview and Giveaway with Pamela Palmer

First of all we are so happy to welcome back to UTC Pamela Palmer, now for the release of the first book in her Vamp City series.  A bit of romance with a touch of dark, it's a book you won't want to miss.

Can you tell us a bit about A BLOOD SEDUCTION? What can readers expect from this new series?
A Blood Seduction (which just came out May 29th), is a bit of a departure for me. Book one in the Vamp City series, it’s the first of a five book vampire romance. I’ve been wanting to do a bigger story for awhile, one that doesn’t require the entire romance to come together in a single book. One that gives the characters a lot of room to learn and grow. And one that gives me lots of space to explore. The Vamp City series is that story.
From the back cover:

Where did you get the idea for the Vamp City series?
I’d been playing with the idea of a dark urban fantasy vampire otherworld for some time, but with both the Feral Warrior shapeshifter series and the Esri series for Nocturne, I didn’t have time to start a third. But with the Esri series completed, I decided the time was right to start exploring my vampire idea. I knew I wanted the otherworld accessible from our world (the vampires can come and go as they please…or could). So I played with ideas, at first thinking I’d set it in Florida, or some place different. Then I thought about Washington, D.C. (my go-to local). The moment I realized Vamp City would be Washington, V.C., I knew I had my place. I called my editor that morning to run it all by her and she loved the idea.

Feral Warriors is a popular series and book 7 & 8 are scheduled to be released. Did you expect it get this far?
I always hoped I’d have the chance to tell the bigger story that I envisioned for the Feral Warrior world. That story included the momentous events of book 6, Ecstasy Untamed, and the introduction of new characters. I know the stories and heroes of books 7, 8, and 9 (Fox/Kieran, Grizz, and Wulfe). Beyond that, I’m not sure. Vhyper still has to have his book, and the story has to reach its climactic conclusion. But I don’t know how many books it will take to get there. Maybe ten in all. Maybe more. We’ll have to wait and see.

Can you tell us a bit about your personal writing process? Do you create an outline or write by the seat of your pants? Depending on the books, how many drafts does it usually take?
I typically spend 2-3 months figuring out the story, the characters, the major turning points, etc. While this is definitely planning, I hesitate to call it plotting because when I’m finished, I still don’t really know what’s going to happen. I definitely don’t have anything close to an outline. It’s kind of the difference between starting a vacation trip with a day-by-day itinerary, sight-seeing tickets, hotel and dinner reservations, with detailed maps from place-to-place, and starting the trip with just a full tank of gas, a map of the U.S., and a plan to drive from Miami to Denver. My ‘plotting’ is like the latter. I know where I’m going when I start the book…kind of…but I really don’t know how I’m going to get there. The most important thing is to know my characters inside and out, to know who they are, what they need, what they think they want, their goals, their fears, their dreams, and their nightmares. Because once the characters come to life, they take the wheel. And while I might throw a few well-placed roadblocks in their way, how they handle the change of direction is always an interesting surprise.

As for how many drafts it takes, best case, five or six. I can generally write the first draft in 4-6 weeks once I know the characters and, roughly, the story. But my first drafts are always light on the description, the emotion, etc. They’re mostly just action and dialogue. Second draft is my fleshing-out draft, where I fix the things that went off-track as the book progressed and add in the rest of the description, internal thoughts, emotion, etc. If the book really came together right on the first try, this might be all I need before I send the book to my critique partners, but it usually takes an extra draft or two to get things right. After my critique partners read it and mark it up, I revise the book, then send it to my editor.

What three things do you require in order to write a novel?
My laptop, my music, and a glass of water or tea.

Do you listen to music as you write? If so, care to share your playlist?
My favorite writing music is Keiko Matsui’s new age jazz instrumentals. I have six or eight of her albums. I mix it up some with movie and game soundtracks like Halo-3, Inception, Twilight, and The Last Samurai. I can sometimes plot to the radio, but to write, I need instrumentals only. The music has become quite Pavlovian. When I turn it on, my mind immediately slides back into the book, so I’m careful never to listen to that music when I’m not writing. Not even to check my email or refill my water glass.

Say I'm looking to start my own paranormal romance series. What advice you would give an aspiring author like me?
Hmm…that’s a good question. A lot depends on where you are, if you’ve been writing for years or are a complete newbie, as I was when I first started. What I’ve come to believe over the years is that fiction writers are, at heart, storytellers. Anyone who has the stories to tell can be a writer if they’re willing to work hard enough at it because the ‘how’ can be learned. So if you’re first starting out as a writer, head straight for your public library and start checking out books on how-to-write and story structure. Some of the best, oddly enough, tend to be by screen writers. Blake Snyder’s Save the Cat! is one of my favorites. Other must reads are Dwight V. Swain’s Techniques of the Selling Writer and Jack M. Bickham’s Scene and Structure. The one that opened the world of writing to me was Nancy Kress’s Beginnings, Middles, and Ends. There are all kinds of books on characters, description, dialogue, you name it.

The other thing to do, if you’re writing romance or any kind of story with romantic elements (even young adult) – go to the Romance Writers of America website and join. RWA has wonderful programs, classes, and information for unpublished writers, and amazing access to published authors and industry professionals (editors and agents) through their local chapter meetings, contests, and conferences.

Now, onto that paranormal romance series. When starting a new series, you have a lot of decisions to make: where it’s going to be set, whether it’s going to be a fixed number of books or open-ended, whether you want the external story to build from book to book (like the Feral Warriors series) or each book to be a stand-alone set in that world. You also have to decide whether you want to write a series of romances (like the Feral Warriors) or one romance with continuing characters (like Jeaniene Frost’s Cat and Bones books and my new Vamp City series). You also have to start making choices about the creatures and magic that populate your paranormal world. What classic lore do you want to keep? (My Vamp City vampires can’t survive direct sunlight.) What do you want to twist? (My vamps not only drink blood, but feed on emotions—some on pain, some on pleasure, some on fear.) Create the rules of your unique world, then stick to them.

UTC would like to get to know you a little more. We rarely learn details about the person who writes our favorite books. If you could write a fan letter to your favorite author, who would you address it to and what would you say in it?
One of the best things about being an author is that I’ve actually met most of my favorite authors and become close friends with a number of them. One author I’d die to meet is J.K. Rowling. That woman walks on water. If I were to write her a fan letter, I’d probably gush about her brilliance in creating such an incredibly vibrant, complex, and utterly mesmerizing world, and about the characters who leaped off the page even before they came to life in the theater.

What was the last silly or crazy thing you've done?
I rode a zip line over the alligator pit at the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Florida. Not exactly crazy, since it was perfectly safe, but it was a ton of fun. It was part of a tree-top ropes course with multiple zip-lines that took more than two hours to complete. If you’re interested, here’s the website: http://www.treetoptrek.com/.

Finally, what's next for Pamela Palmer?
The seventh book in my Feral Warriors series, A Love Untamed, will be out the end of December. This one is Fox/Kieran’s and Melisande’s story as they search for Kara. I’ve just started working on Vamp City book 2, which is currently slated for a July 2013 release.

How exciting!  We can't wait!

ARC Review: A Blood Seduction by Pamela Palmer

4.5 Feathers
A Blood Seduction
by Pamela Palmer
(Vamp City # 1)

Pamela Palmer did an extraordinary job of sucking me in to her linear world of vampires. I loved every bit of this complex world she had created and now, I can truly say that I have become more fond of this genre.

Twenty seven year old, Quinn Lennox has powers beyond her imagination that she has managed to tamp down since she was a child. Though she has done a great job hiding it, weird things still happens in her daily life and had gone stronger the past few weeks. After her Brother’s friend, Lilly had gone missing, both she and Zack had discovered an existing linear world of Washington D.C. also known as Washington V.C. An alternate world of Vampires that ruled over humans. Thriving as it is, this world is dying and in need of a savior itself.

In an attempt to rescue Lilly, Quinn and Zack were separated and captured. Quinn was captured by the dark and mysterious vampire, Arturo Mazza. As all the other vamps in this world, he uses humans for his personal use as help, blood/sex slave. Arturo is one hot vamp! As said in the book, he is indeed the “epitome of rugged handsomeness”. He is also evil and dishonest but a hero all the same. A contradiction you wouldn’t believe. I equally love and hate him.

I enjoyed both Quinn and Arturo. Though the romance is not strong the sexual tension is obvious and it is apparent where their relationship is going. Trust will be a big one for these two. They are also both kick ass heroes as you will see them fight for what they want and believe in.

I loved the character and world building of this complex world. Ms. Palmer had explained this linear world with ease. She explained how the world came to be, different life factions, politics and characters pasts etc. There’s so much going on with a several key players but not once I felt lost.

The ending left me very curious. There are several outcomes with unexplained reasons that I'm dying to find out about. I cannot wait to what Ms Palmer has installed for us.

This Dark Urban Fantasy with a light touch of romance is the first of this series and is expected to have at least 5 books I cannot wait to devour each of them as they are released!

Review: Ecstasy Untamed by Pamela Palmer

Ecstasy Untamed
by Pamela Palmer
(Feral Warriors # 6)

I don't think I can write a review for this book without first saying something about the cover, because, lets face it. I love Paul Marron as much as the next girl but this cover was a big miss. He looks like a lost puppy floating in a sea of hot pink. Not so hot.

Now that I got that off my chest, on to the book. I admit I haven't read the previous books in the series, but when given the opportunity to read an ARC for this book I jumped on it to see what the series was all about. I was not completely lost! Even though the world is still complex, I could figure out things pretty quickly.

So not knowing much of Hawke's past, he basically ended up in a spirit trap that had affected his animal side and there is hardly any connection between human and animal anymore, and he is lucky to have come out of that alive.

Now the Feral House, home of all Feral Warriors, is inducting a new Warrior to replace Fox. And he comes with a mate. After knowing Maxim for just about a day, Faith has moved across the world because she feels the pull of a mate bond. Except, shouldn't your mate be the person most suited for you? Maxim is an arrogant ass, has no respect for Faith or her feelings and as the book progresses I couldn't help but just feel disgusted and sickened by him.

Faith and Hawke are perfect for each other, their attraction is immediate, they're both loving and fun to be around. But Faith feels she has to fight the attraction because she's only there to be Maxim's mate. And how will Hawke be able to deal with having the woman he wants living under the same roof and belonging to someone else?

The first half of the book I felt was a bit slow, as most of the plot happened at Feral House and without a lot of action. Once the bigger plot develops, the story flowed much better.

There's plenty of story options from here! I'm excited to go back and read the previous books as well as future books.

Interview and Giveaway with Pamela Palmer!

UTC After Dark brings to you, Paranormal Romance author Pamela Palmer! Pamela is the author of the Feral Warriors series that has just released it's latest book, Ecstasy Untamed. This is book six in the series and stars of the book are Faith and Hawke! To learn more about this series and Pamela, please visit her website here.

Thank you, Pamela for taking part in UTC After Dark! We are thrilled to have you! Ecstasy Untamed is book six in the Feral Warriors series. There's a little complication between Hawke, the hero of the book and Faith, a Therian. His name is Maxim. I sense some trouble. What's rolling through Hawke's mind on all this?

Oh, there are definitely complications! Hawke pretty much falls for Faith the first time he sees her… when she arrives at Feral House on the arm of the newest Feral Warrior, Maxim. This might not be quite such a problem for one of the others, but Hawke is one of the genuinely good guys. He’s all warrior, all alpha male, but he watches out for others and is particularly protective of women and kids. And he’s incredibly honorable. So no way is he going to make a move on another Feral’s woman even though he hates the way Maxim treats her. But he has nothing better to offer her. His connection with his animal had been damaged and he’s losing control of the wildness inside him, which makes him very dangerous. The last thing he’d ever want to do is hurt Faith.

What would you say is Hawke's best quality? What would you say he needs to work on?

Hawke is kindness personified and extremely honorable. What he needs to work on is his relationship with his animal, the hawk spirit, which he’s never truly been one with. It’s the only way he’s going to be able to save them both.

Your heroines are very strong-willed. How easy (or difficult) is it to find a heroine that suits each one of the Feral Warriors? How do you make sure that dynamic works between the two characters?

I know these Ferals extremely well by now and have a pretty clear idea of what (or who) they need to make their lives richer and more complete. Finding the woman who will force that change is usually pretty clear to me. Paenther’s hatred for the Mage has just about ruined his life, so of course he has to get caught up with a Mage witch worthy of his love, if he can just get past his hatred. Jag needs a woman strong enough to kick his sorry butt. And Hawke? Let me just say that Faith is exactly what he needs, but I’m not going to tell you why for fear of spoiling the story for you.

Will we see any female Ferals?

Yes. ; )

In your Feral Warriors world, you have a unique blend on shifters, mages and Therians. Why did you choose these three "races"?

Well, the Therians were once all shifters. The Feral Warriors are the nine who still have the power of their animal, the only shifters left in the world. The primary enemy of the Therians and shifters are the Mage, but long ago, they banded together to defeat the Daemons. Now, the Mage are trying to free the Daemons (no one is sure why) and all hell is going to break loose if the Ferals can’t stop them. That’s the scenario I envisioned when the series first came to me, though I did leave the door open for other races. In one of the first books someone says there used to be others, but they’re all extinct. In Book 4 (actually my Hearts Untamed novella in the Bitten By Cupid anthology), the Ilinas are introduced, one of those ‘extinct’ races that actually still exists.

Would you consider your books to be plot driven or character driven? Do you believe you can have one without the other?

That’s a good question. My books are generally very fast paced and very plot-heavy. There’s always something going on. But the characters are absolutely driving all that action. Yes, I do believe you can have one without the other, but I’m not sure I could write that way. I love plot, and I always have a ton of it, but characters are the heart of the story.

On your website, you have a list of both your favorite paranormal authors. If you could spend the day with another author and pick their brain, who would you like to hang out with?

I’d probably say Karen Marie Moning. I’m in awe of her Fever series. What a fabulous story.

Good choice! We adore her too! If you had the ability to shift, what would you like to shift into?

A bird of some kind. Maybe a hawk. I’ve always had a fascination with flying, perhaps because my dad was an air force pilot for over thirty years. The closest I’ve ever come was parasailing, but I love heights and would absolutely love to be able to take wing and fly on my own.

Your heroes have such unique names- Lyon, Jag, Wulfe. They are definitely memorable and sexy! Do you feel like you're running out of sexy Feral names? What's one name you would NEVER find in the Feral Warriors world? Something like Ox, maybe? Nah, you could probably make that be sexy too.

Thanks! There’s actually a very logical reason for the animal names, which is explained in Ecstasy Untamed. I’m pretty sure there will never be a Mouse. Or a Chipmunk. Then again, this story is constantly taking turns I haven’t foreseen, so I suppose I’d better never say ‘never’. I guess we’ll have to see!

Thank you for the interview!

Review: Desire Untamed by Pamela Palmer

Desire Untamed (Feral Warriors #1)
by Pamela Palmer
Paranormal Romance

An optomistic 3.5 Stars!

I am a HUGE fan of Shifter PNR, a complete ShifterSlut in fact, stake the vampires in the sun and watch 'em smoulder because for me Shifters are top dog, cat you name it! So I love the idea of the Feral Warriors series, any series about a big sexy band of alpha male shifters is going to get my attention. So I went into this series fully prepared to create brand new shrine, infact I had already bought the requiste candles and got the goat for the live sacrifice *please note no animals were harmed in the making of this review* and although I may be holding off on the goat, I have started to light the candles.

Th Feral Warriors are a group of Shifters who protect the world by slaying he deamons which would otherwise take over and suck teh life out of all living beings. But to do this they need a Radiant a woman who can supply them with the power to shift which without they slowly go mad and die. But the last Radiant has died and now Lyon the chief of the Ferals needs to find their new Radiant and ascend her before the daemons start swarming the Earth.

As I mentined I liked this book it was a decent start to the series, although it wasn't fantastic as I had a few issues with it, I did enjoy it. The set up of it almost reminded me of Black Dagger Brotherhood, only with shifters and frankly not as good, they are all warriors and definitely not tame they all had a hint of the wild in them, which lures me in, I love seeing them tame for their one true mate. And Lyon (guess what he shifts in to?!) I really liked him, he was hot dangerous and literally kiss you in to orgasm! Kara, the new Radiant, I liked her, but unfortunately I think she will fall in to the catergory of heroines who I liked when I was reading her, but will forget very soon afterwards.

Now to the niggles. One of the things that bug me most about some PNRs is the early I-love-yous, sometimes I feel them sometimes I don't. I didn't feel it with this book and it put me off, up until that point I felt their stong attraction there was no doubt about their chemistry which was written fantastically, but suddenly it goes from them wanting to boink like bunnies to her falling in love with him, which I didn't see, I think it would have been better a bit further into the book. I wouldn't say it spoiled the book but I was left thing "huh?" after she had the "realization."

The only other thing that I found with this book is that I mixed up all the other Feral's name and who was who! I think that after I have read the next book it will be straight in my head but you meet all of the ten warriors at once and I was left a little confused about who was who.

However, it had shifters, HOT SEX, more shifters, interesting plot line and oh yeah did I mention SHIFTERS? So I really liked it and I am reading the next one as soon as I have finished lighting the candles in my new Feral Warriors shrine.

*** When I first read this book, I thought the cover was AWFUL, but now when posting I have changed my mind, it is growing on me look at his yummy oily body!
