Interview and Giveaway with Katie Porter

It's no secret by now that we have a thing for Katie Porter. And we just couldn't resist to let you get to know these ladies better!

First of all we'd like to welcome both awesome ladies that make up Katie Porter, Carrie Lofty and Lorelei Brown, to UTC!

Lets start with the easy stuff. Can you please tell us about the Vegas Top Guns series?

Lorelie had an idea about a contemporary series set in Las Vegas but couldn’t find a fresh hook. We started brainstorming when she mentioned that Nellis Air Force Base is located just outside of Sin City. Hmmm…. Air Force pilots? So we did a little digging and found out about the 57th Adversary Tactics Group. The pilots’ objectives are as we’ve described in the series: to fly as adversaries against allied pilots from around the world, teaching them to better counter enemy tactics.

What better? Sexy, talented pilots who played “bad guys” and had little chance to be redeployed to a warzone—the perfect way to salvage a military happy ending! And with a series of contemporary erotic romances set in Las Vegas…anything could happen!

In this series you explore a variety of desires such as voyeurism, male submission, role-playing, power exchanges, etc. Why did you decide to incorporate these elements in your books?

We always wanted the series to explore different kinks and why they appeal to people. We wanted to “normalize” them, to a certain extent, and encompass them within love stories that showed—yes, real people enjoy kinky and fetishistic sex! Then it was a matter of matching personality types to the various desires that interested us as romance writers, then keeping from boring ourselves (or potential readers) by repeating too many themes. Hence…a smorgasbord of passion.

What can readers expect from HOLD 'EM?

First off, readers can expect what they’ve already found in DOUBLE DOWN and INSIDE BET: hot fighter pilots, strong heroines, vulnerable hearts, refreshing humor, dedicated friends, and strong emotional growth from the hero and heroine, both individually and as a couple.

Second, of course, is our trademark scorching, exploratory sex. In the case of HOLD ’EM, Leah “Princess” Girardi is a woman in a man’s world. She’d fought throughout her career to be taken seriously as one of the top fighter pilots in the world. Her wild child days are almost behind her when she’s reunited with a fellow pilot, Mike “Strap Happy” Templeton. He’s the Zen to her manic. He’s the calm to her storm. And he’s the male submissive who nurtures Leah’s repressed desire for dominance.

We explore femdom in a way that hopefully satisfies readers’ curiosities about a power dynamic rarely explored in romance, where the woman takes charge in the bedroom. But seriously? Mike is so damn hot that it makes his utter desire to please his mistress so arousing. Pain, bondage, Mariachis, rock climbing, and surprises from previous characters in the series…HOLD ’EM has it all.

I know favorites are hard but, which character did you have the most fun writing about?

Carrie: I wrote Mike, so it was a blast working that balance between creating a seriously manly man—a former chauvinistic who’s since learned to admire Leah’s professional skills and bravery—and carrying that machismo into his role as a submissive. And I got to write two or three scenes featuring Jon Carlisle from INSIDE BET, which was fantastic. I still haven’t recovered from my crush on him.

Lorelie: So far, I think I’d have to say Nate from CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR. He’s had a hard life and pulled himself up by the bootstraps, all those happy clichĂ©s. All that is fairly common for romance heroes, but the thing I love about Nate is that he screwed it all up by being bullheaded. He had a way out, a scholarship to a posh boarding school and Kyle, a boyfriend who made him incredibly happy. Then he blows it by getting himself locked up for a couple years. Came Upon A Midnight Clear is his second chance. And I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for people who really, truly need a second chance.

How does the writing duo dynamic work?

We brainstorm based on characters first. What if we had a female fighter pilot who still fought to be respected. She came from a hard-charging family of adrenaline junkies. She’s been struggling with bored and risky behavior… What’s wrong with this woman? What sort of man would suit her, go toe-to-toe with her, satisfy her?

Then it’s a matter of choosing which character to write. Since Lorelie is a US Army veteran, she’s written all of the pilots…until now. With two fighter pilots in HOLD ’EM, Carrie had to climb into the cockpit, so to speak. We write one point of view per chapter and switch back and forth. Edits and revisions help smooth out individual quirks, but the “voices” of the characters remain unique because they were written by two different women.

You have a lot of projects in the works, amongst those an m/m book and a new series centered around a kink club. What can you tell us about those?

The “Club Devant” series will launch in January, set in a glitzy, upscale burlesque club where at least one hero or heroine is a professional dancer. The club isn’t BDSM or the like, but a public nightclub where dancing is the main attraction. We’re taking more chances with this series, still focusing on fetish and kink, but with threesomes, m/m, and multi-cultural romances. Here’s a teaser for the debut, LEAD AND FOLLOW:
LEAD AND FOLLOW is friends-to-lovers romance between an American temptress and her stoic Russian touchstone. Two catalysts rock their history as champion Latin dance partners: her career-threatening injury, and a sexy Texas bartender who sparks exciting new passions—if only for a dance or two.
Is there one particular heroine in your books that you most identify with?

Carrie:
Probably Lizzie Maynes from LEAD AND FOLLOW. She’s a passionate dancer, and we artist types are dedicated perfectionists who can be stubborn and rather hard on ourselves. Plus, she’s a natural optimist and bright, shiny cheerleader for her more stoic partner. Doesn’t hurt that I used to dance Latin ballroom in college…

Lorelie: Captain Leah Girardi for me. She’s a slightly foul mouthed, spastic mess who is trying so very hard to improve. That doesn’t seem at aaallll familiar to me. *cough* She’s also at home in masculine environments, while never losing her femininity.

Many authors get their ideas from everyday life. Do you have a story to share where your real-life experience has influenced your writing?

Carrie: In INSIDE BET, Heather’s story about about freezing five-pound blocks of government cheese comes directly from my childhood. Those little anecdotes from one’s past can really add depth to characters.

Lorelie: At the time that we were writing HOLD EM, I was working really hard to get in shape and be more fit. So Mike drinks Coke Zero. I was going through them by the case load. Of course, I’ve since discovered that’s fake-healthy, not real-healthy, but close enough, right? Right?

What is your favorite quote from your latest book?

Carrie: Our hero, Mike, finds rich playboy Jon from INSIDE BET in the on-base food court noshing Cheetos, a Slim Jim and a Slurpee:
“That’s quite the lunch, Tin Tin.”
“To fuel the temple that is my body,” Jon said. “We can do tradesies if you have Twinkies. But I don’t do generic.”
Lorelie: The morning after the first time they sleep together, Mike and Leah are trying to sort out the details:
“Do I need to give you a sex-ed talk? I thought you were a big girl.”

“No, not sex ed,” she said with a little laugh. “I’ve had plenty of that. But maybe BDSM 101?” She nibbled on her bottom lip. “Because that is what we’re doing here, right?”

He scraped his fingers along his nape. “Yeah, you could say that. I’d prefer to say we’re having a good time. Getting off.” He aimed that volatile smile at her, the one that made her heart go pitter-pat like she were some type of idiot tweener. “Getting off majorly.”

“But I don’t know where the line is. Where we stop.”

He shrugged. “We stop wherever we want to.”
If you could pick anyone in the world to be the cover model(s) on your latest release, who would it be?

Can we just say Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, then drop the topic? We write with specific actors or models in mind, but we never want to reveal them to readers. Everyone has an idea of how the protagonists look, and we don’t want to spoil those personal impressions!

And lets end this on a difficult note... You write some steamy sex scenes! Do you ever find yourself looking over your shoulder as you write one out because you know it's "too sexy"? Have you ever had to cut down or remove certain parts of a love scene? If so, can I read the original? And where do these ideas come from? *we are taking notes*

We both have kids, so the only “looking over your shoulder” that happens is when they’re being pests. We have been asked to alter and tone down certain love scenes, but not because they were “too dirty”—more like that particular direction didn’t suit the story or the characters.

As for the ideas, we just…wander the internet! There’s a LOT of kink to be had out in that Wild West cornucopia. We find a fetish or kink that appeals to us as romance writers first—for example, I can’t imagine a romance where furries are the protagonists, although that kink is perfectly awesome for some real life folks. Then we research. We’re both historians by trade, so investigating what sort of cane Leah would use on Mike is just as important as getting the details right about a Regency’s debutants gown.

For more insight on this particular topic, check out the next month’s issue RT BookReviews, which features our “Pros on Prose” article about co-writing erotic romance. Can anyone say “naughty slumber party”?

Up next for Katie Porter, the co-writing team of Carrie Lofty and Lorelie Brown:

Now that the first three of the RT BookReviews 4½ Star Top Pick “Vegas Top Guns” series have been released, readers can anticipate the final two installments, HARD WAY and BARE KNUCKLE, in 2013.

November brings the m/m Christmas-themed CAME UPON AMIDNIGHT CLEAR, described as “masterful” by Publishers Weekly. In January, LEAD AND FOLLOW will launch the five-part “Club Devant” series of erotic multi-partner romances set in a hot New York City burlesque club.

A man with handcuffs. A woman with a paddle. Both fly F-16s.

Daughter of a world-famous motocross champion, and head-on competitor with three brothers, Captain Leah "Princess" Girardi was born with a need for speed. No one tells her what to do, especially not men with chauvinistic "girls can't be fighter pilots" attitudes.

That's what ended her brief relationship with Captain Mike "Strap Happy" Templeton. Now, six years later, he’s been assigned to her squadron, and whoa damn, he’s filled out nicely. Plus he’s cultivated a Zen-like chill factor that pulls at her hormones.

Even after four tours, Mike's the new kid in the 64th Aggressor Squadron. That's not the only thing new. Since he last saw Leah, he's learned a few things about himself. A female who outranks him still makes his teeth grind, but in the bedroom he craves the rush of pain inflicted by an adoring, powerful woman.

Their reunion is an explosive revelation. Leah is the beautiful mistress he's been searching for, and she takes to her new role like a natural. But Leah's aware one thing hasn't changed. Loving him is still an all-or-nothing proposition. She's not sure her reckless streak is wide enough to risk her career--and her heart.

Warning: This book contains a hot stud on his knees, a woman wielding a paddle, and filthy-gorgeous femdom sex. Also: dangerous rock climbing, two amazing motorcycles and some bad tequila.
We'd like to give away a copy of DOUBLE DOWN, INSIDE BET or HOLD ’EM (winner's choice) in any format. Just answer: If you had the choice of any casino in Las Vegas, where would you stay?

Her abrupt announcement that she wants a divorce is like a missile to Dash’s gut—but her confession that she’s met another man is what unleashes his shocking passion. Sunny is surprised and nearly repulsed by her body’s reaction to Dash’s animalistic attempt at complete possession. That doesn’t stop her from craving more.

With Sunny’s whispered approval, their sex life explodes. Not only does Dash’s aggression tap into dark fantasies, she’s hopeful that now, at last, she’ll get what she’s always wanted from her devil-may-care, don’t-give-a-damn husband. Something honest and candid. Something real.

ARC Review: Hold 'Em by Katie Porter

4.5 Feathers
Hold 'Em
by Katie Porter
(Vegas Top Guns # 3)

This is the one series I've been recommending to everyone this year when they want something good and hot to read, or even the one I keep reminding people to hurry up and get on to the next one.  I don't think I can say it enough, both ladies that make up Katie Porter are extremely talented and they have certainly turned up the heat on erotic romance masterfully.  It's classy, not overdone, extremely sensual and never lacking. Blows me away everytime and HOLD 'EM will leave you

Throughout the series we've been reading about Leah "The Princess".  She's a tough chick in a man's world.  A woman pilot and very successful at her job, who has let the pressures of what her life entail take her on a self destructive path.  It was nice to see that in this book she was able to face her alcohol abuse head on and do what's right for herself.  Just one more thing that shows how strong she is.

And speaking of strong, I'll be honest here.  I was not expecting Leah to end up being the dominant in this relationship and where I normally can take or leave these types of scenarios, Leah and Michael blew me away.

Lets not leave Michael "Strap Happy".  He is totally adorable, funny and cute.  He is a take charge, alpha male with a little secret.  And if you thought by Strap Happy that meant he likes to tie women up, then you're wrong.  Nothing turns this guy on more than to submit to a a strong woman.  One that can raise her voice just so to issue a command he can't refuse.

I've come to expect Katie Porter's books to push my comfort limits on what I would normally find that I enjoy reading about.  And not only push them, but make me like them.  They truly submit my likes to their whims.  I enjoyed every single moment of the relationship between Leah and Michael, in and out of the bedroom.  They are both very strong characters and they compliment each other so well.

Their love story was different than the previous ones.  I feel that there was a deeper connection between the characters, more romantic even. There's the second chance at love for these two since they had a short fling when they were still very young.  Love those types of stories.  Still there was plenty of humor and great banter between the hero and heroine, as well as with the rest of the cast who makes an appearance.

I don't think these two were able to top the awesomesauce that is Jon Carlisle for me, because that man is a sex god, but it was a very close attempt!  I can't wait to see what else Katie Porter has to offer.

PS:  Have an extra pair of underwear handy, you will need it ;)

Favorite quotes:

"Give me permission to move so I can fuck you the way you want.  The way your body needs.  Hard and fast."

"Harpy-hood is one of my many talents."

"As long as you’re there, I always know where I am. Safe."

An Interview with Heather Morris of Inside Bet
By Katie Porter

(I did an interview of Jon Inside Bet for a different site and it was easily the most fun post I’ve written in this whole entire blog tour. And they say posts that are fun to write are fun for readers, right? So I’ve gone ahead and interviewed Heather. I hope you guys like this as much as I liked writing this.)

Heather Morris and I meet at a busy bookstore in the middle of the afternoon. Despite the fact that I met with Captain Jon Carlisle six weeks ago, Heather’s boyfriend, I’m under the impression she’s not sure if I’m a serial killer. She’s already ordered her coffee before I get there, and as I sit across from her, she regards me steadily.

Heather Morris has brilliantly blue eyes. “I must say I didn’t expect to be contacted by members of the press.”

“I’ve been trying to get in touch with you for more than a month.”

Her mouth tweaks into a wry smile and she looks up at me from under her brows. “No, you haven’t. You’ve been trying to get in touch with Jon Carlisle’s girlfriend.”

I give a little chuckle that’s half unexpected humor and half abashed shame at having been caught out. “That’s probably true. He’s the son of an old-money rich family who courts the limelight, yet he’s joined the Army to become a fighter pilot. He’s intriguing. So why don’t you tell me who Heather Morris is when she’s not being Jon Carlisle’s girlfriend?”

“I’m an assistant director at Hanover Financial Logistics. I do audits for several of the largest casinos, but I’m sure your readers wouldn’t be particularly interested in that.”

“They might be.” I make a little note on my paper. “My readers are interested in the Carlisle family as a whole and in Jon as black sheep in particular. They’d likely want to know what about you interested him. You’re gorgeous, of course, and intelligent, but anyone with Carlisle money could have their pick of the nation.”

“I do believe he’s taken his pick,” she said dryly. “I’ve certainly had no complaints about my qualifications from him.”

I blush. “That’s not quite what I meant to imply.”

“I know,” Heather replies. She has a coffee in her hands, but she doesn’t sip it. It’s more a prop. The thing she was supposed to acquire for our meeting. It’s becoming more obvious that she’s uncomfortable—and that her shields have come up as a result.

“Maybe you can tell me more about Jon Carlisle when he’s not in front of the lens. His private life.”

“Then it wouldn’t be private, now would it?” She says it with a smile, and it’s only half humor. It’s also half poking at me.

I break. Shaking my head, I lean forward with my elbows on the small marble table. “Look. I know you don’t want to be here. Jon didn’t want to speak with me either.”

“That’s an understatement. Mrs. Carlisle—” Heather breaks off, chagrin painting her cheeks pink. “Let’s just say she has ways of getting what she wants.”

I wonder if the methods employed by Jon’s mother are as distasteful as Heather implies with only a few words. Making another note, I decide to follow up on that later. “If you tell me one thing, one good sound bite, we can call this done and get on with our lives.”

“One thing?” Tiny lines drive across her forehead as she considers my offer. “Okay, how’s this one: even putting the fighter pilot job and old money aside, underneath Jon is an amazing man. A man well worth coming home to.”

Maybe it’s my imagination, but it seems like she puts particular emphasis on “coming.” But surely a woman as poised and classy as Heather, involved with one of the Carlisles and obviously sophisticated wouldn’t have made such a dĂ©classĂ© pun. I try to push the idea of out of my head, but as we wrap up and go our separate ways, I can’t help but think about it. About Jon and Heather. About what those two gorgeous people would look like wrapped up in bed. Neither seem like the type to bow, so how would that power explode when they gave it a chance.

And what lengths would I go to in order to find out?

~~Once again, dear readers, you’re much luckier than our intrepid reporter. Inside Bet is available now at any digital retailer! And heck, it’s gotten a 4.5 star Top Pick from RT BookReviews, so you know it’s certified tasty, right?

Zero to kinky in 3...2...1

As assistant director in an accounting firm, Heather Morris is at the top of her game. Her straight-laced colleagues wouldn't believe the secrets she hides: her wild teenage past, work-of-art tattoo and nipple ring.

Her orderly life veers off course when she's approached at a wine tasting by an arrogant pretty boy with a dirty mind and a hardcore dangerous profession. She finds herself tempted to step outside her respectable façade for some well-deserved excitement.

Captain Jon "Tin Tin" Carlisle knows women. Loves women. One glimpse of the nipple ring under Heather's conservative blazer lights up all his instincts. He's stumbled upon a rare treasure: an exotic beauty with a sexy laugh and a taste for dares.

After a red-hot hour of roulette, their simmering attraction bursts into an exploration of mutual passion that tests even Jon’s erotic limits. Soon he craves something he's never desired before. More. But for Heather, more means trusting, and trusting leads to trouble.

Now Jon must decide if the best sex of his life is worth chancing his heart on a woman who shields hers so well.

Warning: Contains hot power play featuring a fighter pilot who comes from old money but knows all about bringing the dirty. Also: a nipple ring, sex on the hood of a hella sweet sportscar, and one teensy, tiny, wickedly naughty fluid exchange.

Up next for Katie Porter, the co-writing team of Carrie Lofty and Lorelie Brown:

ARC Review: Inside Bet by Katie Porter

Inside Bet
by Katie Porter
(Vegas Top Guns # 2)

If you don't read any further into my review just know this:  If you are not reading Katie Porter you are missing out on some seriously hot books!  I thought after finishing DOUBLE DOWN that this series had started out on a really high note with a lot of originality and that it would be hard to keep up with that note.  Which is why I went into reading INSIDE BET without expecting much of it.  And boy was I wrong!

INSIDE BET had me from page one.  I started this and couldn't put it down, literally.  The story is great, the characters are even better and the sex?  Well...lets just say that this book will leave you reaching for a vibrator or your significant other...at the very least will have you biting down on your knuckles and needing a cigarette afterwards.  And note that I don't even smoke.

I think anytime you can make a hero as delicious as Jon Carlisle you already won half the battle.  If you like the rich and powerful type, he's your guy; if you like military men, he's your type.  If you have a thing for a man in a three piece suit, yep that's him.  But he's also the guy in really nice jeans and a white tshirt with a jacket and sunglasses, or the extremely sexy guy in a military uniform.  In case you need further explanation, Jon Carlisle is panty-melting hot!  And he's not afraid to get a bit rough and dominant.  Where has he been my whole life?

Of course the lucky girl that catches his eye, Heather Morris, is not so bad herself.  She's smart, she's got her issues with her past but that doesn't immediately stop her from being with Jon.  Their dares and extremely hot sex couldn't have happened if she hadn't been there to push the envelope.  Together, these two are explosive!

Then there's also the friendship in Jon's group and the issues with Leah coming to a breaking point.  I really can't wait to read the next book and finally find out what her story is and why she is so self-destructive.

ARC Review: Double Down by Katie Porter

4.5 Feathers
Double Down
by Katie Porter
(Vegas Top Guns # 1)

Oh.My.God! This is one hot little story.  Of course I have a thing for a man in uniform and an honest to God Air Force pilot can push my buttons.  Add to that that he may have a kinky side and I'm all for it.  But Ryan Haverty (aka "Fang") is not kinky in the way you are thinking.  There's no tie me up and spank me in this book (well, there is but in a completely different context).  This story is about role playing.

Ryan has always had fantasies of being with women and dressing them up.  He's wanted the schoolgirl, the french maid, you get the picture.  He also thinks he is a sick fuck for wanting that everytime he thinks of sex because of a bad experience with his ex.  Now, I don't see the immediate problem with his likes or his way of thinking.  What I did see a problem with and why this isn't a 5 star book was Ryan's disgust for his own wants.  Constantly.  That's all he thought about and talked about.  How sick in the head he was for wanting to have sex with a girl while she was on her knees with pigtails and a sexy skirt.  I say.... whatever floats your boat, get over it already.  He was getting annoying at times with that.

That being said, this is one hot book.  What starts out as a one night stand between Major Ryan Haverty from the Air Force and Cassandra Whitman, a waitress from Las Vegas, slowly turns into something else, something more.  They are truly a perfect fit.  She is just daring and carefree and funny enough to draw Ryan out and make him forget about his rules and live the life he wants.

I loved this quote:

"Fucked in a sex shop? Been there, done that. Bought the naughty Goth costume souvenir."

Even though this book might seem like a fantasy after another (you may want to take notes for future reference, just staying) it also developed the characters and their connection.  They both had issues to overcome although Ryan's issue just made me want to punch his face.

I am so excited to read about the rest of the Vegas Top Guns.  I see from the blurbs that Jon and Leah are not going to end up together.  =( I was rooting for that!  But I can see how their friendship and dynamic could work better with separate love interests.  I'm excited to read about them, so bring on "Tin Tin".
