Undercover and under the covers

So here I am at Under the Covers Book Blog talking about going undercover…and under the covers! In fact that’s the “warning” for Hot Ride:

Warning: Features a badass biker hero and kickass heroine who go at it undercover -- and under the covers.

In researching for my book Hot Ride, I learned a lot about the incredible stress of being undercover. I wanted to portray this as realistically as I could for my characters, but I also wanted this to be a romance and in a romance there are a few rules you just can't break. I couldn't have my characters turn criminal, for example. I wanted to show the struggles they face, but I didn't want to destroy their lives, which can happen "in real life". And I had to have a happy ending (not just because it's a rule, but because *I* have to have a happy ending!).

There's the stress of constantly watching what you say, knowing your new identity and always staying in character. There's the daily exposure to drugs and the pressure to use them. There's the constant exposure to crime and danger and violence. Never being able to trust anyone, constant fear and paranoia. Undercover agents see things they can't do anything about, people getting beaten and at worse, killed. One mistake can cost you your life.

There's also the tension between the undercover operatives and their handlers and bureaucrats, who sometimes might think the operatives enjoy playing biker a little too much, who worry about how much financial and human resources are being spent on the mission. Something the leader of the undercover team is responsible for is making sure that the team is “separating” —not confusing their undercover lives with their real ones. It's all physically, emotionally and mentally exhausting. For many real life undercover agents, it can take a toll on their health.

What do you think about the portrayal of undercover agents in romances vs the real life struggles they have? How important is it to balance realism with "romance"?

About the Author

I'm a married mother of two who lives a very ordinary life outside of my imagination. When I'm not writing I'm usually reading. I also like to cook and that means I like to read cookbooks and cooking magazines. In the summer I enjoy spending time gardening and in the winter I like to read gardening magazines and seed catalogues. I love lying on the beach or on my deck with a glass of wine and a good book. I also love to travel. As you can see, pretty much all my activities involve reading somehow! Although I don't have as much time for it any more, I also love to shop, especially for clothes and shoes. Some think I'm obsessed with shoes but that is not true (although my husband would point out that there is no room left in our closet).

Courage is feeling the fear... then pouring on the throttle.

Abandoned or betrayed by everyone she ever loved, Sera Manning’s life spiraled out of control until a near death experience left her with a mission. Now a DEA agent, her sole focus -- and her first undercover assignment -- is to take down a drug cartel that’s manufacturing seductive, deadly angel sugar.

To do it, she needs access to Operation Black Abyss to establish a connection between the cartel and the Death Angels outlaw motorcycle gang. Which means she must pose as a couple with another agent who’s already deep undercover.

ATF agent Ryan Thomas desperately needs a female agent to maintain his cover in the gang, but the last thing he wants is a rookie agent jeopardizing his op. Especially one that is a sexy reminder why it’s a bad idea to get involved while on a case.

Living together, surrounded by crime, pretending their sizzling sexual tension is just for show is getting harder by the day. But as the mission comes to a head, the two fiercely independent warriors must decide which fear is worse. Losing their quarry... or losing each other.

Warning: Features a badass biker hero and kickass heroine who go at it undercover -- and under the covers.

Fake Boyfriend Trope

Yes, this has been done a million times before. Hero or heroine needs a partner for some reason, someone to act the part of boyfriend/husband/fiancée. All kinds of reasons have been done – the character has to be married to get a job, adopt a child, become a citizen or collect an inheritance. She wants to impress people at her high school reunion. He wants to get his family off his back about settling down. Or she wants to make the guy she really cares about jealous.

In Sweet Deal, Shelby impulsively creates a fictional boyfriend to keep her too-friendly boss at a distance. When he suggests they attend a company social function together, she knows she has to get out of it. She lost her last job when she got involved with her boss and she’s not going to make that mistake again. But she really needs to keep this job. So a boyfriend seems the perfect reason to say no to her boss’s invitation.

But she doesn’t have a boyfriend and then she has a whole new problem.

Jake Magill has been eyeing the sexy little blonde he encounters at the coffee shop every morning, and when she confesses her problem, he jumps in like a knight in shining armor, which he knows he is SO not, with an offer to help by attending the picnic with her. It’ll be one night, no big deal, and she is pretty cute…but things get all twisted in knots at the picnic and then Jake has his own reasons for wanting to continue the fake boyfriend/girlfriend relationship.

Well it is a romance, and you know Jake and Shelby are going to fall in love, but things take a few twists and turns on the way to their HEA. Friendships are tested, marriage bonds are questioned, perceptions are challenged and both Jake and Shelby have to figure out how to stop letting the past influence their future.

Do you like the fake boyfriend trope? What about it works or
doesn’t work for you?

Sweet Deal – available June 12, 2012

The relationship is pretend. The chemistry…isn’t.

After her last job ended with a broken heart and a humiliating exit from the company, Shelby Leighton’s project management career is back on track with a new job and a high-profile project. The problem: her new boss is a little too friendly, and the staff is talking. Can you say, “déjà vu?” The solution: casually mention a fictional new boyfriend.

Jake Magill doesn’t do relationships. It’s casual or nothing, but the hot blonde he’s been eyeing at the coffee shop sure is something. Especially when she confesses her problem, and he finds himself offering to act as her date.

Sounds simple. Stroll around the party with Shelby’s sexy curves clinging to his arm? He’s all over it. Until he meets her boss—the man who once stole and married the one woman Jake thought he loved.

Now Jake’s the one with a reason to pretend. If only to save his own pride…and Shelby from the predatory gaze of the man who could ruin her, and any chance of finding out if their fake connection is the real thing.

Product Warnings
Contains one desperate lady in need, and a pretend boyfriend who shows impressive dedication to nailing all—and then some—elements of his role. Oh my!

Review: Sweet Deal by Kelly Jamieson

Sweet Deal
by Kelly Jamieson

Shelby Leighton and Jake Magil have made a deal, he will be her pretend boyfriend to scare of her boss who seems to be a little too friendly and they will have all the benefits of a relationship, without the actual relationship. They have both been burned one too many times to want to jump into anything serious. But, how long will the "pretend" part last they have sweet deal, but maybe the real thing could be even sweeter.

This was a good quick read. It had a likable main couple with some steaming hot chemistry and who you knew would be perfect together. I liked that beneath the steaming hot sex, they also had a sweet romance going on as well.

Although this was a little but predictable, it was still a fun read and I enjoyed it.
