Interview and Giveaway with Ivan Rusilko and Everly Drummond

BURNING UP JULY is finally coming to an end, but we couldn't end this wonderful event without one more exciting author interview.  Today we have Dr. Ivan Rusilko and Everly Drummond, celebrating their release day with us!  THE WINEMAKER'S DINNER has created a lot of buzz for the past few months and it's finally available.  We are glad to be able to bring you all more information about this book and the people behind it.

HAPPY RELEASE DAY!

Thank you so much to both of you for stopping by Under the Covers and sharing with our readers about TWD.

Thank you so much for having us.

Lets start with some questions for Dr. Ivan, whom we had the pleasure of meeting earlier this year.  Do you identify more with being an author or a model?

Author 100%! Modeling was something I fell into and was able to parlay into something much greater. One doesn't have a voice in modeling, just an image...a mannequin if you will. I’ve always been able to spin one hell of a yarn so writing and telling a story is much more up my alley. Luckily I am able to combine both with The Winemakers Dinner Series! ;)

Do you worry that people won't take you seriously as an author due to you being a model?

Yes, unfortunately I do but I have been dealing with assumptions my entire life. Earlier this year at the Romantic Times Conference, people thought I was just some cover model. I loved seeing their faces when I told them, “No, I’m one of the authors!” In my first solo writing project, the TWD prequel, RSVP, I hope I was able to prove that I’ve got something to say and that I can write because I sure do enjoy the hell out of it. I had a great time working on that piece and have big plans for other outtakes so stay tuned!

What kind of doctor are you? Are you currently practicing?

Currently, I specialize in weight loss, wellness, physical enhancement and yes, sexual health at the world renowned MIAMI Institute located in the Four Seasons in Miami. Being an osteopathic physician, I have the ability to utilize traditional medicine along with the added bonus of affording my patients a more preventive approach to health through the use of exercise diet and various osteopathic manipulations. I like to boast that I work in the most enjoyable field of medicine. Making people look good, feel better and regain an essence that may have been lost over the years.

How do you balance your time since you seem to do so much - writing, modeling, being a doctor, working out and keeping fit, etc.?

Very carefully. ;) All kidding aside, I enjoy every aspect of my day. Whether it is a 6 am jog on the beach, or a one hour consult over helping restore one’s vigor, or sitting on my balcony hammering out a couple chapters, I always have a smile on my face throughout the day. If you can find things that you enjoy doing, both professionally and with your hobbies, one can accomplish so much in a day it is almost comical. It’s all about creating a quality of life.

Are you currently writing anything else? Is TWD a stand-alone, or will it be a series?

There are two more books in the series, The Winemaker’s Feast. Next up is EntrĂ©es and then Desserts, so I am hard at work on those currently. I do have a few projects already lined up that I think will raise a brow or two so stay tuned! But for now TWD is my focus and it is going great.

Are you still in a relationship with the girl from the book and what does she think of the book?

Well, if there was a real Jaden out there she wouldn't be a just a girl, she would be my wife by now. Jaden is a beautiful amalgamation and imagining of all of the women I have had the privilege of calling my girlfriend at some point in my life, rolled into one character - Jaden Thorne. Hopefully someday I will find her, but until then I’m still single and my search will go on. Any suggestions as to where I might find her?

How much of the book is reality and do you feel nervous putting your personal life into print?

This is the question that makes my team, especially my publicist, the most nervous. Hahaha My publisher calls it a fictionalized romantic memoir which pretty much sums it up. All I can really say is that TWD is loosely based on my real life and real romantic experiences and the truth or fiction on the page is an authentic to the life I’ve led. Anyone who really knows me and knows where I came from might just smile a little bit bigger when they read it. I hope everyone else enjoys trying to sort fact from fiction. I mean, after all, everyone loves a little mystery, right?

As far as putting my personal life out there – I’m not gonna lie, I was a bit hesitant in the beginning. But now that the first one is finished and the second and third are in development, I can say that I find it to be very, very therapeutic. Maybe even somewhat addictive.

We'd like to ask both of you, what is your favorite part of the book?

For me personally, it’s the acknowledgment page. It explains a lot to a sharpened mind ;). ~Ivan

It really is hard to pick just one part. I have several favorites, but if I had to choose only one, it would have to be the beach scene. I love this scene, not only because it’s sexy, but it’s a series of random encounters and events that has lead up to this, where they are both beginning to discover that this new and budding romance has so many possibilities. It’s fun and playful and romantic and sexy. ~Everly

We are curious Everly, what were some of the challenges you encountered while working with Dr. Ivan?

Hmm... I think the biggest challenge was our schedules. Ivan was working midnights at the hospital and I was working on a horse farm (which I still do). We had to find time every day to chat and collaborate on the book, but through thousands of emails, we somehow managed.

And what was the best part?

The best part was, and still is, the craziness. Working with Ivan, one never knows what to expect. I’ve been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to collaborate with him on The Winemaker’s Dinner. I get to pry into the sex life of one of the hottest guys out there. Each new day working with Ivan is a new adventure.

How did you end up writing this story together?

One of my Twitter followers sent me a link to her Man Candy blog and after reading Ivan’s bio, the thought kept nagging at me that he’d make the perfect romance hero. I friended him on Facebook, but it took me a month before I actually built up the courage to talk to him about it. One day I made a flippant comment about wanting to use him as a character in one of my books. Well, low and behold, Ivan messaged me and said he’d be honored. He told me that he wanted to help write the book rather than just loan his name to it, so we started throwing ideas back and forth. I already had a basic idea of where I wanted the story to go, so we just built on that and incorporated his ideas and experiences into the story. And voila… TWD was born.

Are you curious yet?
Recently named executive chef at one of Miami Beach’s hottest restaurants, Jaden Thorne is determined to make her culinary mark and fulfill her professional dreams. When Jaden is given highly coveted tickets to the ultra-exclusive Winemaker’s Dinner, she jumps at the opportunity to meet South Florida's wealthiest and most influential food and wine enthusiasts.

Jaden’s eyes are drawn to the VIP section even before the appetizers appear, but she soon finds herself thinking less about networking and more about the intriguingly sexy stranger eying her from across the room. After dinner, what begins as a light-hearted flirtation unexpectedly catapults into a night of explosive passion. But when morning dawns, Jaden leaves her sleeping Mr. Oh So Sexy behind, sure they’ll never see each other again.

Dr. Ivan Rusilko, a handsome, young physician, boasts an extensive resume’ and a well-established position on Miami Beach’s social scene. But despite his success and glamour, he’s routinely had to suffer uninspiring dates and doomed relationships. With a romantic heart, Ivan’s not the love-‘em-and-leave-‘em type. But when he awakens to find that the girl in the red dress has done exactly that, he resolves to find her--only if it’s just to ask why she left without even a kiss goodbye.

The Winemaker’s Dinner is a fictionalized erotic memoir inspired by the romantic triumphs and tragedies of Dr. Ivan Rusilko’s real life. Weaving fact with fantasy, authors Everly Drummond and Dr. Ivan Rusilko have gifted readers with a swoon-worthy flesh and blood romantic hero and the intoxicating bouquet only a heartfelt tale of passionate love can create.
Here's an excerpt from THE WINEMAKERS DINNER: Appetizers.

Jaden was a little disappointed not to see Ivan when she stepped out of the elevators, and as she left the lobby, she saw no sign of the black beast that had picked her up last time. What did catch her eye was a hot-looking motorcycle sitting in front of her building. So sexy, and so Miami Beach.

Yep, there he was, some pretty boy straddling the monster. Dark blue denim hugged his legs, and a short-sleeved green polo shirt stretched tightly around the ridged muscles of his arms. The bike roared to life and crept along the curb, coming to rest just inches from Jaden’s feet, leaving her both startled and annoyed. Who does this asshole think he is?

Wordlessly, the asshole raised the shield hiding his face. Eyeing her inquisitively, Ivan asked, “Are you making assumptions again, young lady?”

Feeling like a complete idiot, Jaden burst out in laughter. “Really? Do you honestly think I look like a biker chick? Now you’re the one making assumptions, doctor.”

Stepping off the bike, Ivan removed his helmet, releasing hair that flowed over his shoulders. Jaden smiled, remembering the way Ivan’s hair had felt as she wrapped her hands around it, and the intoxicating scent that came off him in waves as he heated up. A shiver swept across her skin as she approached the bike.

“This is why I was hoping you hadn’t spent too much time on your hair,” Ivan said as he revealed another helmet.

“Oh, of course not,” Jaden said sarcastically. “I just threw everything together.”

“Well done. You look delicious.” Ivan pulled her close and kissed her cheek. “There’s only one thing missing,” he added, and Jaden saw the small box in his hand.

She gasped as he opened the box to show her, and then slowly turned her around. He brushed aside her hair and draped the silver necklace around her neck, securing the tiny clasp from the back. Hanging from the chain was a golden sea turtle. Jaden reached up and ran her fingers over its smooth surface.

“I’ve never been so jealous of a turtle!” Ivan smiled and kissed the silky skin at the nape of her neck.

Jaden turned to face him and inhaled deeply. Her passion for this man overpowered her, and she kissed him with fervor. “You’re too good to me. What did I do to deserve you?”

“The night has just begun, baby,” he whispered against her skin.

“Well, thank you. You have no idea how much this means to me.” Jaden had always been happy with the simple things in life, and she found the greatest joy in small, meaningful gestures. Overwhelmed by feelings, she leaned in and kissed him again. “If you’re lucky, I may just show you how grateful I am.”

“Mmmmmm…” Ivan cleared his throat and stepped back, appearing to catch his breath. “Okay! Will you be all right riding this bad boy?”

“There’s a first time for everything,” Jaden replied, also a bit breathless.

She put on the helmet Ivan handed her and slid on to the back of the Ducati. She admired its smooth lines and the way her arms naturally fit with the curves of his body and her ass with the curves of the bike. It almost seemed built for sex. She grasped him firmly around the waist, and after retrieving his sunglasses from his pocket, Ivan started the bike. Instantly vibrations danced up Jaden’s thighs, surprising her, but if she was going to be a biker chick, she needed to be one with the bike, right?

Do you want to whet your appetite?

In addition to the full length novel, two short story prequels, RSVP and No Reservations, penned independently by Dr. Ivan and Everly, are available for free download on the Omnific Publishing website.

Interview and Giveaway with Andrew Shaffer and Earl Grey

Andrew Shaffer

If you haven't heard of this talented author yet, then you might be living under a rock.  And as always, we've made it our mission to point these things out to you and introduce you to authors and books that you just HAVE to read!  We are very excited to have here today author Andrew Shaffer, who just recently released Fifty Shames of Earl Grey, a parody of the popular Fifty Shades.  And as if that wasn't enough, he even let us email Mr. Earl Grey!  They both took time from their busy schedules and here's what they had to say.

First things first, let’s get to know you better! Who is Andrew Shaffer? Tell us 5 interesting things about yourself that readers wouldn’t know!

1.  I was named after Andy Griffith.
2. I used to have my tongue pierced. I had a little skull stud with red ruby eyes. It was cool until one day I swallowed it!
3. My first job was working at a library. I was a terrible employee, because all I did was read on the job. I would hide in the restroom with books for hours. I told my boss I had irritable bowel syndrome.
4. I have had four concussions. Or is it five? Too many.
5. My first pet was a tarantula named Cthulu.

Why did you decide to write a parody on this particular title?

I thought "Fifty Shades of Grey" brought up a lot of different issues and, as a critic or reviewer, it was nearly impossible to address them all in a single review or blog post. The parody addresses the questions raised about fan fiction, the response from media (including Dr. Drew), and the way E. L. James seemed to treat BDSM as something in need of curing.

If you could write a parody for another book, which book would it be and why?

I told my girlfriend, Tiffany Reisz, that I'm going to write a parody of her "The Original Sinners" series. Instead of being set in a BDSM club, it would be set in a gym and be called "The Original Spinners."

You thanked Stephenie Meyer in your Acknowledgements. What would you do if you met Ms. Meyer is person?

Have an off-the-record discussion about "Fifty Shades of Grey."

We heard that Tiffany Reisz was your beta reader! Here’s your chance to spill the secrets. Got any dirt on Tiffany?

Truthfully...it would be impossible for me to spill dirt on her! Her Twitter feed (@tiffanyreisz) is 100% her: what you see is what you get.

What scene in FIFTY SHAMES OF EARL GREY was your favorite to write? Care to give us a little teaser?

I had a lot of fun writing the deflowering scene:

Earl Grey rises above me, towering over my naked, quivering woman-flesh. I can’t believe this is happening—it’s too much like a wet dream about Robert Pattinson to be real.
“Are you ready for my love gun?” he says.
Uh-oh. “What’s a love gun? Is that a sex toy?”
“No,” he says. “I’m talking about my penis.”
“Oh,” I say. “Then yes. Fire away.”

Can you tell us when to expect FIFTY SHAMES IS SPACE?

No. But I'm sure it will be out before the final book in George R. R. Martin's "Fire and Ice" series.

Quick-fire questions!
Beach or mountain? Mountain.
Sunrise or sunset? Sunset. I don't remember the last sunrise I saw.
Vampires or werewolves? Neither.
Christian Grey or Edward Cullen? Edward, because he came first.*

*That's what she said.

And last. Can you share a Drink Recipe to our followers? With or without alcohol is fine.
Recipe for Earl Grey tea: 1. Heat water. 2. Steep tea for 1-2 minutes. 3. Enjoy.

Up Close and Personal with Mr. Earl Grey himself!

Subject: Re: UTC Interview for Earl and Andrew

Dear Ladies,

How does a billionaire like you keep yourself grounded and stay in touch with friends?

I mostly stay grounded due to gravity. Except for when I fly my helicopter or F-16. As for the second part of your question, I am not sure how to answer that because I don't have any friends. This just got awkward, didn't it? Sorry.

Tell us what you think of the author Andrew Shaffer aka Fanny Merkin. Did he do well to match you up with Anna Steal?!

You're referring to the book, "Fifty Shames of Earl Grey," that's supposedly told from Anna's perspective? The only person he talked to was my old butler, Data, so I'm guessing the book is filled with lies and half-truths. Or half-lies? Something like that. Mr. Shaffer sent me a copy, but I haven't had time to read it. I've been too busy having sex with my new wife on a giant bed of money.

How did you know Anna was THE one? Did you ever think, with your lifestyle you would ever settle down?

Believe it or not, I knew that Anna was "the one" when she didn't fall 1500 feet to her death out of my helicopter. You'd be surprised how many times that happened to me with previous relationships! I suppose I should install seatbelts, but I like to live dangerously.

How would you say your relationship with Anna has changed now that she had accepted your lifestyle of BDSM (Bards, Dragons, Sorcery and Magick)?

Anna's really taken to live-action role playing. I don't want to say too much about our private life—what happens in the Room of Doom stays in the Room of Doom. Except pregnancies. And STDs.

Do you and Anna like to watch movies? Have you heard of Twilight books/movies?! Tell us what you think of that vampire Edward and his wife Bella?

Of course I've heard of the "Twilight" books and movies! I'm solidly Team Jacob, though. I've only read the first three books, and didn't know that Edward and Bella end up getting married. So, thanks for totally ruining that for me. :(

Do you think you'll be watching the highly anticipated Fifty Shades movie when it comes to the big screen or would you rather watch Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher- new movie in December?

I'm not heard of this "Fifty Shades" movie. Is that based on the autobiography of El James, the Mexican Lucha Libre wrestler, or am I thinking of a different book? As for the Tom Cruise movie, of *course* I'm excited. I've had a hard-on ever since I heard he was cast as Jack Reacher. Actually, I should probably get that checked out by a doctor. It's kind of painful.

Tell us what you think about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. How is this affecting your obsession with him? He turns 50 this year right?

I'll tell you what this means: Tom Cruise is back on the market! If I were a single lady right now, I would be jumping up and down on my couch. But of course I'm not single, and I'm not a lady. And I would *never* jump on the couch in my condo's living room, because it's real faux pleather.

Laters babies,

Earl Grey

Fifty Shames of Earl Grey

A UTC RECOMMENDED READ!!

A shrewd, laugh–out–loud parody of E. L. James' bestselling Fifty Shades of Grey series:

Young, arrogant, tycoon Earl Grey seduces the naĂ¯ve coed Anna Steal with his overpowering good looks and staggering amounts of money, but will she be able to get past his fifty shames, including shopping at Walmart on Saturdays, bondage with handcuffs, and his love of BDSM (Bards, Dragons, Sorcery, and Magick)? Or will his dark secrets and constant smirking drive her over the edge?

Author Override: Colette Gale

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

Night time sharpens, heightens each sensation…

I’ve always loved Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. It's rich, it's lush, it's sensual and erotic...but Christine ends up with the wrong guy!

So about five years ago, after watching the play and movie umpteen times, I decided to take matters into my own…er…hands (considering the to-die-for appeal of Gerard Butler in the movie, however, I must admit there were other things I would have liked to take. In hand.).

It was obvious to me, and to pretty much every other woman I've talked to, that the passion, the attachment, the sex between Christine and Erik (the Phantom) is beyond belief--and how she could throw it away just because he has to hide half his face is beyond me!

(Well, okay, he might have accidentally killed a few people...but that was in a different version of the story. Definitely not mine.)

Plus, I couldn't stop wondering what actually happened during the "Music of the Night" scene. I mean, that bed!--not to mention the way Erik's hands were all over her body while he was seducing her with song. But, alas, it was a family production (or at least PG-13), so Webber had to close the door on that scene...

...but that didn't mean I had to leave it shut when I wrote my super-sexy version. Which I did, and the book was released in 2007 as Unmasqued: An Erotic Novel of the Phantom of the Opera.

Since then, I’ve “seduced” several classic stories, including The Count of Monte Cristo (published as Master) and the Robin Hood/Maid Marian/Nottingham legend (think Richard Armitage in BBC’s Robin Hood), which was published as Bound by Honor.

I’ve recently been working on a serialized story of Jane’s Erotic Adventures in the Jungle. I’m sure you can’t guess what type of story inspired this project! Currently, there are two short novels available about Jane and her adventures in the Madagascar jungle.

Here’s an excerpt from the first novella of the series, Entwined. This is Jane’s first night in her bedchamber high up in a treehouse. Unbeknownst to her, a lean, muscular man who lives in the jungle has perched on her windowsill…watching.

He was very near the large window, watching the woman with the fire-like hair. She couldn’t see him; he was in the shadows, hidden by thick leaves and vines. Like the big cats, he’d moved noiselessly, making his way from branch to branch to tree to tree until he was just outside the large opening.

If he reached out a finger, he could touch the wall. He sniffed silently, and amid the familiar scents of the jungle—the flowers, the damp soil, the underlying decay of plant and animal, the proximity of a tree monkey—he smelled something new. He smelled her. Musky and sweet and exotic. Something he’d never scented before; but an essence that drew him.

He couldn’t pull his eyes away as she took off her dress—that was another word he’d learned in the books—and saw all of the roundness there. The jouncing and the curves and the smooth, hairless, ivory skin…and a patch of fire between two legs. He wanted to touch that fire.

His heart was pounding and there were other parts of him pounding too. Never. He’d never seen anything he wanted to touch, to smell, to taste so badly.

And he was not the only one who meant to touch the woman. In the darkness, his face turned fierce and he forced back an angry growl. The tall man had tried to touch the woman, to take from her, to mate with him, and she hadn’t wanted him to.

She’d fought with him, but the foul man had his hands on her body, his red, wet mouth, his fingers leaving dark marks on her ivory skin. Her face had been frightened and angry, and the foul man’s expression had been hungry. Deprived.

Now, he gripped the rough bark of the tree. Though the woman had fought and struck at the foul man, the sight of the two bodies writhing and twisting caused his breathing to change and his face to heat. His veins pounded, blood surging through his body. He didn’t want to see the woman hurt, he had to do something…but the images made his insides move. Made them heat and tingle and…want.

And so he helped her. He could mimic the sound of any creature in the jungle, and he chose to growl the most threatening sound he knew: that of a hungry, angry tiger. He smiled to himself in the dark when the foul man had jumped away, stumbling off of the woman, panic and cowardice blazing in his face.

And when the woman closed the door behind him, he knew she was intelligent and strong.

And he wanted even more to touch her.

Unseen and silent, now he watched her for a long time as she lay, uncovered, on her bed, in the soft yellow glow of a flame.

He could tell when she fell asleep, for her breathing changed, her body relaxed. Her head turned to one side, her vibrant, burning hair covering a cheek and curling over her neck and shoulder.

Heart pounding, he slid down to the branch on which her nest rested. His fingers curled over the edge of the wall and he sniffed. Hot sensation rushed through him. Her smell was beautiful, and it made him feel almost the way he did when he breathed the smoke burning from the special negaru plant.

He wanted to bury himself in that delicious, compelling scent, his face and nose close to her skin and in the warmest parts of her curves. He closed his eyes for a moment, steadying his breathing. He couldn’t make a sound or she might waken.

Then, silent as the tiger he’d mimicked earlier, he climbed into the nest. Heart pounding, he stood next to her pallet, in the shadows and looked down.

Such a thing of beauty. He could hardly breathe. The burning hair lay spread all over her pallet and her white shoulders, down over her belly…almost to the second, smaller, shorter patch. Round white globes, tipped with small pink flowerbuds, rose and fell with her easy breaths.

He tightened his fingers into his palm to keep from touching her.

Suddenly, she shifted in her sleep. He stilled, slowing his rough breathing into silence. She gave a soft moan and a sigh, and as she moved, her hand rose and slid to cover the short, burning patch between her legs.

Her foot shifted and her legs opened, showing a large portion of the pallet between them.

He reminded himself to breathe, to draw in air, for his vision seemed to tilt and sway. He couldn’t pull his eyes from her. His body felt hot and engorged and he watched breathlessly as she moved her fingers.

They fluttered between her legs, shifting delicately into the short, burning fur…then they tensed and straightened, and she began to rub herself. It was rhythmic and steady, and it reminded him of the mating movements he’d seen in any number of animals. Her legs shifted helplessly, her head turned from one side to the other and the hair covering her face fell away. Her body arched and relaxed as though she were reaching for something…longing for something.

Her mouth was open and she was making sounds…soft, panting sounds that tugged pleasure deep inside him. Her particular smell grew stronger, more delicious, filling his nostrils and making his clenched fingers tremble. He wanted to taste her…touch his lips to her smooth skin, find the place of that essence and drink.

She moved her other hand, using her fingers to massage the rosy pink tip on one of the soft globes. They moved lightly over the little point, then in small circles around and over it. His keen eyes saw it shudder and tremble when she drew in a deep, long breath.

He noticed the fingers between her legs had become damp and slick, gleaming in the moonlight. Her white hand moved more rapidly and urgently there in the dark shadowy space between and her breathing had become so loud and labored that he might have thought she were in pain if he hadn’t been watching for so long.

This was not pain.

It took every bit of fortitude he had—the same strength that had helped him to kill a feral tiger in a hand-to-paw battle, the same control that had kept him alive when he left the ape family that had raised him from a young child—to keep from touching her.

But he inched closer to the place where she lay, watching from the shadows that would obscure him if she opened her eyes. His fingers loosened, wanting to reach for her, and the blood pulsed through his body—hard and fast and hot. The leather piece he wore to protect his male parts lifted straight out in front as his rod throbbed and shivered.

He was waiting…waiting…but he didn’t know what he was waiting for. She made a sound that sent a renewed shock of heat and sharp pleasure bolting through him, a soft cry of surprise and need, and then all at once, she gave a low gasp and arched up. Her smell exploded even more strongly, and then she was whimpering and shuddering and shivering.

He knew, somehow, that this was what he’d been waiting for. His rod was so hard it was painful, it dripped moisture from the tip, and he knew if he touched it, it, too would explode.

Her hand, glistening and damp, fell away, relaxing open-palmed on her hip. The beautiful, musky smell rolled off her in waves, and now he could see that part of her between her legs…sleek and dark and beckoning.

He wanted there.

Interview and Giveaway with Lexi Blake

Maidens, we have with us today another very talented erotic romance author.  Lexi Blake's stories are full of suspense and adventure  And of course they are scorchingly hot!  If you like your kinky romances with some and edge of suspense, then you have to give these books a try!  Now, please help us welcome Ms. Blake to UTC while we get right to it!

Hi Lexi, thank you so much for stopping by today and being a part of our Burning Up July event!

THEIR VIRGIN'S CONCUBINE is the third book in your Masters of Ménage series with Shayla Black. What can we expect from this book?

Readers can expect more fun. The Masters of MĂ©nage series was meant to play on old Harlequin tropes – like the captive bride, the secret baby – and this is our version of a sheikh book. We’ve made up our own little country and the royalty there shares power between brothers. In order to keep the power and wealth consolidated, the brothers of the family share a bride. And tradition requires they steal their bride.

What's the best and worst about writing a story with another author?

The best thing is spreading the work load. The worst thing is we’re dealing with two minds, two egos. Shayla Black and I are best friends. We actually work really well together, but we’ve had to find that road. Switching between chapters didn’t work for us. Our voices were too different and I hate editing. Shayla loves it. So I write the first draft and she edits it, adding in her own unique voice.

How did the series Masters and Mercenaries come about?

I really wanted to write a BDSM version of James Bond. I love spy stories and thrillers, but I always wonder where’s the sex. So I wrote my own version. I was deeply attracted to the idea of two very different brothers as book ends to the series. Sean from The Dom Who Loved Me is the reluctant spy. He has other dreams. Ian is his deeply intense older brother. Being a spy is his whole life.

A DOM IS FOREVER is the third book in this series. Do you have any interesting stories about writing this book?

Liam is a difficult character. He kind of goes into this whole thing kicking and screaming. I know that makes me sound like a crazy writer, but it’s true. I think he’s probably the most difficult book because I need A Dom is Forever to not only be Liam’s book, but the bridge to the rest of the series.

Do you have a favorite Dom?

I have a couple. Of mine? Ian. Of that other me? I always go back to Julian Lodge from my Sophie Oak series Texas Sirens. Of other author’s? Master Z from the amazing Cherise Sinclair’s Shadowlands series and Master Logan from Shayla Black’s Belong to Me.

If you could describe your writing in three words or less, what would they be?

Sexy, Sassy, Suspenseful

What sex scene has been your favorite to write so far?

The one in the pool between Sean and Grace in The Dom Who Loved Me. It’s my favorite scene because I kind of, sort of took it from real life. Grace is happily swimming in her pool long after dark when no one should be able to see her. But someone does. I did this. Might I just say, my night did not end as well as Grace’s!

Since it is BURNING UP JULY, what's your favorite way to cool down on a hot summer's day?

Sitting in the pool with a margarita in my hand!

What book is currently on your nightstand?

I’ve been reading Larissa Ione’s Demonica and Lords of Deliverance series. I’m deep into Lethal Rider.

What would you say is the difference when you write as Lexi Blake then when you write as Sophie Oak?

I think I’m more suspenseful as Lexi Blake. I write a lot of one man/one woman books as Lexi. Sophie is almost totally a mĂ©nage author. Sophie is very funny. Lexi is more about the mystery. Lexi is very much big city BDSM and Sophie is small town cowboys.

Do you ever use a real life experience and include it in one of your books? Care to share?

Well, there was the pool thing. I think I use a lot of my real life emotions in my work. I love writing older heroines because I’m just a little past forty and I love my current stage of life.

We're asking participating authors to share their favorite cocktail drink recipes with our readers so they can cool off this summer. Do you have a recipe you'd like to share?

Chocolate Cake Shots

½ oz Vanilla Vodka
½ oz Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur
Lemon slice
Sugar

Mix the vodka and liqueur in a shot glass. Dip the lemon in sugar. Take the shot. Bite the lemon. Tastes just like chocolate cake!

Well there you have it ladies!  Thank you so much Lexi for sharing with us.  Might I add the pool scene was very hot, sorry yours didn't end as well.  And I can't wait to read Ian's story!!  Now we'll leave you with an excerpt from the second book in the Masters and Mercenaries series, THE MEN WITH THE GOLDEN CUFFS.

EXCERPT

Chapter One
(The following excerpt is for adults only!)
“What brings you to McKay-Taggart today, Miss?” Adam forced himself to ask the question when all he really wanted to do was tug the curvy brunette into his arms and promise her everything would be all right.
From the moment Jake had shown her in his door and dumped her at his desk, Adam had wanted to put a hand on her. It was an instinct. She was exactly his type, and she seemed to be in trouble. He was a sucker for a woman in trouble.
Luckily there was a desk between them or he might prove he was completely unprofessional.
“It’s Serena Brooks. That’s my real name.” Her hands fluttered nervously before she forced them into her lap. “Please call me Serena. Everyone does. Well, my friends do. I actually have a couple of names. Did I offend the first guy?”
Interesting. Adam found himself leaning forward. He caught the faintest whiff of something citrusy. Serena Brooks was a sweet-looking thing. Golden-brown hair escaped from the bun on the back of her head in soft wisps that framed a lovely face. She had on a slightly too big green sweater and jeans. She wore a very professional-looking pair of glasses that she toyed with from time to time. She looked like a sweet librarian.
Fuck, it had been way too long since he’d gotten laid. He usually at least had a full conversation with a woman before he decided to lay her out, strip her down and sink into her.
“Jake? No, you didn’t offend him. He’s odd. I’m sure he had something important to do.”
Jake had a lot of explaining to do. Apparently, he hadn’t even introduced himself to Serena. He’d simply walked her across the hall and dumped her, mumbling something about some research he had to do, and ran out, leaving Adam with more questions than he could answer and one very lovely damsel in distress. At least she could answer a few questions.
“Why do you have more than one name?” Maybe he should back off a bit. Adam knew that sometimes the softest packages could explode in his face. He had the scars to prove it. Ten years of security work including five years serving his country with the Green Berets should have taught him not to take anything at face value. Unfortunately his dick hadn’t gotten the message.
He glanced at the clock, wondering how long Jacob Dean was going to take. They rarely worked apart. Even during something as simple as a client referral meeting, he preferred to have Jake at his side. Jake so often caught things Adam didn’t.
“Oh, you think I have assumed names. Aliases.” She laughed. It was a throaty, sexy laugh. It went straight to Adam’s cock.
“That would be the very definition of a name that isn’t your own.” He was utterly fascinated with the way her eyes lit up when she laughed. Even from behind her glasses, he could see her eyes were a lovely shade of green.
She smiled and leaned forward. She probably had no idea that when she leaned forward, her sweater opened and he could see a creamy expanse of breast. He bet she was at least a C cup. Maybe a small D. She would fill his hands. Those breasts would more than likely look beautiful with rope surrounding them, forcing them to stand up and show off.
“I like the idea of an alias, Mr. Miles. It makes me sound far more interesting than I really am. I have a pen name. Amber Rose.”
“You’re a writer.” That fit. He could see her hunched over a notepad writing out innocent romances. He wondered if she blushed when she wrote the kissing scenes. If he told her how he liked to take a woman, she would probably run the other way.
The question was would he chase her down?
The door to his office opened, and Jake strode in. “Sorry. I had a few things to deal with including one very pushy receptionist who likes to put her overly cute nose into everyone’s business.” He turned to the client, and Adam noticed his double take. Yeah. They had the same taste in women, which was good since they liked to share. “I’m Jake Dean. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Serena Brooks.” She held out her hand, and Jake hesitated only for the slightest second before enveloping it in his own.
Adam understood his hesitation. The woman in front of them was lovely and potentially submissive. It was there in the way she held herself, in the soft way she spoke and the pleasure she obviously took when she thought she’d pleased someone. She might not know or understand it, but Adam had been in the lifestyle long enough to recognize all the signs. Jake was far more invested in being a Dom, but Adam always backed him up.
“That’s a beautiful name, Serena,” Adam said, wanting to see if his hunch was correct.
She flushed and looked down. “Thank you.”
Yep. Score one for the team.
Jake looked at him, shaking his head slightly. Adam could almost read his mind.
Client. Stay away.
He smiled back, a slight uptick of his lips to give Jake his response. No way. No how.
He certainly wasn’t going to back away. They hadn’t even taken the case yet, and there was no certainty that they would. It was very difficult to believe the woman in front of him had gotten herself in enough trouble that she would actually need their services. More than likely she wanted to check out a cheating boyfriend. McKay-Taggart didn’t provide those types of services. Adam could happily refer her to a private investigator, and then in a few months, he could call her up and offer her a little solace—mĂ©nage style.
Jake looked at her, his eyes fastened to her face. “I didn’t have a reminder about your appointment. I apologize for being late.”
Bastard. He knew damn well she didn’t have an appointment. Jake was pushing her to see if she would lie. Adam sighed. Jake was good at playing bad cop.
Serena didn’t even try to lie. She flushed and stammered a little. “I didn’t have an appointment. I kind of walked in. I’m sorry if I’m inconveniencing you. I really should have made an appointment, but my agent thought it would be okay.” She started to stand.
Jake’s voice deepened, proving to Adam beyond a shadow of a doubt that he’d picked up on the same signs. He only used that voice on submissives they picked up in the clubs. “Sit down, Serena.”
She settled in again.
“We’re not upset. I was simply apologizing for not being here at the start of the meeting. Adam and I are a team. We work together. We usually meet clients together.” Jake leaned on the side of the desk. “We don’t usually have clients who simply walk in off the street. McKay-Taggart doesn’t advertise.”
McKay-Taggart Security worked for a very select clientele.
“I know. I had never heard of you.” She nodded and sank her hand into what seemed like a never-ending handbag. Adam was pretty sure she could have fit the contents of a small house in that bag. She apologized as she searched through it, finally coming up with a small business card. She passed it to Jake. “My agent sent me. I guess she’s worked with you guys before.”
Jake looked at it and then passed it to Adam.
Anderson Literary Agency
Lara Anderson, Agent
There was an address and phone numbers, but he didn’t recognize the name. It didn’t really matter. He would look her up as soon as the client was gone, and he would know the woman right down to what she’d had for lunch. He was damn good. It wouldn’t matter if they took the case or not. He was interested in whoever thought to send clients their way. Usually the government or wealthy corporations were more their style, but he was intrigued at the idea of a single client in need of help.
“So what brings you in today?” He tried to come up with any reason for someone so obviously harmless to need a security company of McKay-Taggart’s level. They wouldn’t come cheap.
She took a deep breath, as though steeling herself to get through the next few moments. “I have a stalker. Sometimes fans joke about stalking an author, but this one is serious.”
Jake’s arms crossed over his chest. “Have you talked to the police?”
“On several occasions. I have the police reports right here.” She shoved her glasses back up her nose before delving into her bag. She came up with several papers, each one slightly wrinkled. She put them down on the desk, attempting to smooth them out. “Sorry. I’m not the most organized of people. My friends keep telling me to get a personal assistant.”
Jake snatched the paperwork before Adam could get a hand on it. His fingers tapped along the desk. He knocked twice and swept his fingers toward Serena. It was his signal for Adam to keep the client talking while he reviewed the data.
Adam was the soft touch, and Jake the hard hand. Adam was all right with that. It usually meant that he got to play first.
“Do you know the identity of this man? Is he an ex?” Adam asked, allowing his voice to go soft and sympathetic.
She shook her head. “No. I don’t know. What I mean is I have no idea who this guy is. I’m divorced, but I can’t imagine Doyle would do this to me. He’s an asshole, but he’s really upfront about it.”
Adam wasn’t convinced. When a woman was being systematically stalked, the proper place to start was with an ex. “Your divorce was acrimonious?”
The little huff that came out of her mouth told Adam all he needed to know. “My divorce was started by my ex-husband. He blindsided me. I thought we were happy. We’ve been divorced for almost three years. He’s not interested in me physically. Believe me, he made that plain. And this guy seems very interested, if you know what I mean.”
But Adam didn’t buy that her ex was completely uninterested. If he was male and had working parts and the right bent, he would be interested. Adam let it go for now. “Fine. Tell me what happened.”
“It started really simply. I have a Facebook fan page. Uhm, it’s nothing special, just a place where I talk to fans and post excerpts. But a couple of months ago I got a friend request from someone named Joshua Lake. I thought it was kind of cool because he’s one of my most popular characters. I thought it was cute. It was fine at first. And then it got weird.”
“What do you mean by weird?”
Her face flushed. There was no doubt in Adam’s mind that this woman truly believed she was in danger. “He started to send me private messages. I’ll be honest. At first I thought it was a woman. Most men don’t read romance novels.”
“I would assume you don’t have a lot of male fans. Do you often have men who try to friend you?” The internet was full of predators. Social networks often made ripe picking grounds.
“Usually they’re in the business. I know a lot of cover models, agents, editors. It’s people like that. I knew the minute I got the request that this was a fan. He knew too much about my work. This is a person who has read all my books.”
Adam was definitely interested. “You said it got weird? What were his private messages like?”
“At first I thought he was just role-playing.”
Jake pulled out his phone. He pushed off the desk. “Yes, I’d like to talk to Lieutenant Brighton. Please let him know it’s Jake Dean.”
Serena shook her head. “Oh, the officer assigned to my case was named Chitwood.”
Adam waved her off as Jake stepped away, talking quietly on the phone. “I’m sure they assigned someone very junior to your case. We know Lieutenant Brighton from our Army days. He’s sort of our liaison when we have cases involving the local police. I’m sure Jake would just like to get his hands on the source material. I take it the police have transcripts of all the conversations?”
“Yes. Apparently the network kept the conversations on file even after I unfriended him. I blocked him as well.”
Adam could guess what happened next. “And he simply changed his name and came back.”
“Yes. And he was angry. He laid low for a few weeks and then told me that I wouldn’t be able to get rid of him. He called me arrogant for even thinking that I could brush him aside. I blocked him again. That was when he showed up on my personal page.”
Adam frowned. This man seemed very determined. Usually the trollers gave up after the first rejection and went on to find easier prey. “How well known are you?”
“As Amber Rose? I have a following. I make my living this way. I sell tens of thousands of downloads every quarter. But I could be in a room with two hundred people and the likelihood of someone knowing me is very small. Even a successful author isn’t very famous. I’ve never hit the Times. I probably won’t, but I have some crazy fan girls. I didn’t get really worried until he sent a friend request to me as Serena Brooks.”
Adam didn’t like the sound of that. “How closely do you guard your name?”
Her hands threaded together in her lap, a sure sign that she was very nervous about the whole situation. “I’ve tried to keep it out of everything. Obviously my publisher, my agent and editor know my real name, but no one else does.”
“Not even your friends?” If this woman didn’t have a few deeply close friends, he would shoot himself. He would bet a lot on the fact that she developed intimate relationships. Perhaps not with many people, but there would be a few who would know all of her secrets.
Her eyes went wide. “Yes. I have two friends who know what I do. Bridget and Chris. But they’re writers, too. We all write romance. They would never give up my name. Bridget has been through the same thing. She’s had some guys write her letters from prison saying they were coming after her when they got out.”
“Is that normal?” It sounded horrible. She wrote romances. The worst she should have to deal with was some fan asking her when the next one would come out.
She shrugged. “It happens more than you would think.”
“And what have the police said?” He could guess. They wouldn’t do a whole hell of a lot. Even with stalking laws in place, unless they knew who the guy was, they couldn’t do much.
“He uses public access to computers. Everything has come from a library, and apparently he has several fake names.”
Adam was pretty sure he could do better than that. Damn it. He was going to have to take her case. She actually needed the firm, and not just the firm, but him especially. He was a computer expert. He’d been his unit’s communications expert in the Green Berets. He’d taken that to another level in the civilian world. He considered himself an excellent hacker. If this asshole was out there, Adam was sure he could find him.
“What has he threatened to do to you?” Adam was pretty sure he didn’t want to know, but he had to ask.
Her hands twisted in her lap. He wanted to hold one in his while Jake enveloped the other, the two of them providing a bulwark against the myriad of dangers she faced.
“He hates me. He says I tempt him, and I’m ruining his life. He says I’m dirty, and I should go to hell. He says he’s the one to send me there. It’s odd, really. It’s changed over time. At first it was about the characters. He thought one of my characters should be with someone else. It was fairly typical fan stuff. He said he was coming after me if I didn’t get Melissa and Dan together. He claims they were supposed to be together, but I never intended for those two to get together. Dan is very immature.”
She got animated as she talked about her work. He thought it was adorable, but they were getting off topic. Adam had to bring her back in line. “You said he changed?”
Her eyes widened as though she had to pull herself out of her own thoughts. “Oh, yes. Uhm, the online stalking stayed the same, but then the calls started and the e-mails. Those were about how evil I am. It’s weird. I don’t understand how this person can be invested in my books when he obviously thinks they’re pornographic.”
Adam sighed. “He’s obviously not right in the head. Our resident profiler could explain it better. He’s crazy. That’s all I’ve got.” Adam got out of his chair, unwilling to sit any longer. He walked around his desk and sank to one knee, sliding his hand over hers. He could practically feel her relax. “It’s going to be okay. Let me look into this.”
There was the low sound of someone clearing his throat. Adam looked up, and Jake stood in the doorway, a frown on his face. Fuck. He wouldn’t like what Adam had just said.
“Ms. Brooks, what Adam is trying to say is that we’ll bring this case in front of the group. We don’t have the authority to take the case. It has to go up for review.” Jake stared down at them, a forbidding presence.
Adam wondered what the hell had put that look on his face.
Serena pulled her hand back, retreating as effectively as if she’d walked across the room. Her face went blank and polite. “Of course. I appreciate you listening to me. I suppose you have the police reports?”
Jake nodded, but there was a coldness to his stance that Adam didn’t like. “I do. I think we have everything we need. We’ll get back to you.”
She stood, careful to avoid touching Adam. “I’m sure you will.”
There was a defeated slant to her shoulders as though she was sure everything Jake was saying was mere lip service.
“We’ll be in touch very soon, Serena.” Adam barely restrained himself from reaching for her. “I promise. I will call you tonight.”
“Sure.” She turned her head, not making eye contact. “Thank you both for your time.”
She walked out of the room without looking back. The door closed with a quiet click.
“What the fuck was that about?” Adam turned on his partner.
Jake’s face shut down. “It’s about putting the horse way before the cart here. I just talked to Brighton. Everyone at the DPD thinks this is a marital squabble. Her ex-husband recently decided to sue her for a portion of her income. This could really help her case.”
“She told us it couldn’t be him.” Adam could already see Jake’s brain turning. Jake had been hurt before—on a fundamental level. The scars on Jake’s soul ran deep, and no one had been able to make a dent in them yet.
“And yet she gave the cops clues that led them straight to her ex’s door. This is an angry woman, Adam. I get that she’s beautiful, but we need to take a look at this before we get involved. I can already see that you’re in way too deep. Even if we decide to take her case, I think it would be best if we passed it off to Liam or Alex or someone who isn’t going to get emotional.”
Maybe he’d read Jake wrong. For the last ten years, he’d shared everything with Jacob Dean, including women. Jake was the brother he wished he’d had and the friend he couldn’t imagine living without. He couldn’t believe that Jake wasn’t attracted to the woman who had just walked out the door.
“I want to see those reports. And even then I don’t think I can turn her away. She was scared. If you can’t see that then you weren’t looking at her and you’re not who I thought you were.”
Jake shook his head. “Look at that. She’s already causing problems. I knew that woman was trouble the minute Grace walked her into the room. I knew you would react this way. And this is precisely why we’re not taking this case. I left the file with Grace. You can review it. We present to the group in the morning.”
Adam felt his fists clench. “And if this asshole kills her before then?”
“You know the likelihood of that happening is next to none.” Jake leaned in. “Buddy, you have to learn to protect yourself.”
“And you have to learn that not every woman is Jennifer.” There. He’d said it. The name dropped like a lodestone between them. Adam could practically feel the room’s temperature drop.
Jake turned on his heels. “I’m heading out. I’m going to the club tonight. Are you coming with me?”
He didn’t wait for an answer, simply left Adam standing there wondering if Jennifer Kelly was going to haunt them forever.
