Samhain Nights: NATASHA MOORE

Almost halfway through our SAMHAIN NIGHTS event where we are featuring authors published by Samhain Publishing everyday of the week.  We have with us today Natasha Moore!

Who is Natasha Moore? Tell us 5 interesting things about you that readers would not know.
1. I was totally a “good girl” growing up – friends who knew me then are surprised to hear I write the hot stuff.

2. I used to sing in a barbershop quartet – singing harmony is so much fun.

3. In another life, I would have loved to have performed in a Broadway musical. Of course, I would have had to have been much taller, with longer legs and tons more talent.

3. I love to visit new places but hate to travel.

4. I love the beach and if I ever get rich from my writing I will buy a beach house.

5. My family has some big events coming up – my daughter is expecting her first baby in November and my son is getting married in 2013.

Can you tell us a bit about your Paolo's Playhouse series with Samhain?
I’d love to. I’ve read a lot of erotic romances that take place in sex clubs with dungeons and public viewing areas and while they work for those stories, I wanted to come up with the kind of fantasy sex club I might actually go to. So the Playhouse, a private fantasy club was invented, and along with it, its sexy and enigmatic owner, Paolo. The four stories in the series are intentionally short, dealing with a couple at a crossroads and how their visit to a playroom at the Playhouse affects their relationship. Each story features a different fantasy: exhibitionism, voyeurism, ménage, and bondage. Reader response has been great!

Book 4 in the Paolo's Playhouse series is called Plaything. Can you describe this book in twitter style in 140 characters or less?

Julianne goes to the Playhouse to live out her fantasy of bondage sex, but when she meets Paolo her fantasy changes to bondage sex with him.

How did you decide to be a writer?

I’ve been a writer nearly as long as I’ve been a reader. I remember writing stories about my favorite TV characters when I was in grade school. I don’t really think I ever decided to be a writer, I just wrote.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who have where idea where to start?
Read a lot and write a lot. Read what you love and what you’ve never read before. Write what excites you and gives you joy.

What is your favorite thing about being a Samhain author?
I love everything about being a Samhain author. I signed my first contract with them in 2006 and just signed my 9th contract with them for an erotic romance novel that will be released in December. I love my editor and the art department, and I love that they were willing to take a chance on a new author and that they have helped me grow as a writer.

It's a warm summer's night and you are free to do anything you want! What would you do and who would you spend it with?
I’d sit out on my back porch with my family and friends, drinking wine and sharing stories and laughing a lot.

Samhain Nights: NJ WALTERS

NJ WALTERS

Day two in our SAMHAIN NIGHTS event where we are featuring authors published by Samhain Publishing everyday of the week.  Lets get to know NJ Walters!

Hi NJ, you've written several series already and are in the process of expanding them. How do you go about outlining your work? Do you have a set number of books in mind as your write?

Thank you so much to Under the Covers Book Blog for having me here today!

I have to admit that I’m not much of a planner when it comes to writing my series books. I tend to start with an idea for the first book and go from there. With the Legacy series, I wanted to write a werewolf story. I worked out the basics of the world, and wrote character sketches, which is something I always do. Once I have the first scene in my head, I start writing. I generally have an idea where I want to go with a book, but it doesn’t always unfold the way I imagined.

I knew I would write more than one Legacy book, but I had no idea how many books or which characters would jump to the forefront. Some characters like Isaiah Striker and James LeVeau Riley are obvious choices to have their own books. But sometime characters surprise me. I originally thought I’d be writing stories for the Wolf Creek pack, but instead ended up focusing on the Haven pack in Chicago. That just seemed to be the right thing to do. After book six comes out in October, I’ll be taking a break from this series, because I’ve told all the stories I have to tell right now. I’m leaving it open to more books in the future but, for now, I’m done.

Having said that I don’t plan, I’ve just contracted another paranormal/shapeshifter series for Samhain, which is a quartet. I knew going in it would be four books and actually did some outlining for this particular series. That’s very unusual for me, but it seems to be working for this particular series. Watch for the first book in the Hades’ Carnival series, Night of the Tiger, in January 2013.

If you could recommend only one of your books for readers to try, which one would it be and why?

That’s a tough question. It would depend on what kinds of books a person likes.

If you enjoy paranormal, then my Legacy series is the obvious choice (Samhain Publishing) or possibly my Dalakis Passion vampire series (Ellora’s Cave). If you like ménage a trois, then my Tapestries series is a must (Ellora’s Cave). If contemporary/erotic is your thing, then you should try out the AwakeningDesires series (Ellora’s Cave). If you like contemporary/spicy tales with an emphasis on small town living and family, then you might enjoy my Jamesvilleseries (Samhain Publishing). I have other series, but these are my most popular ones. All my books are love stories at the heart of them.

Can you tell us a bit about your Legacy series with Samhain publishing?

My Legacy series began with Alexandra’s Legacy and my vision of a twenty-two year old woman who works in her father’s garage in a not so great neighborhood in Chicago. Alexandra Riley has no idea just how much her life is going to change when a tall, dark stranger appears in her father’s garage and completely blows up her idea of what her life is. She discovers her father has lied to her all her life—he is really a pureblood werewolf and she is a half-breed. Now she is in danger from paranormal bounty hunters who want to kill her. But there are also certain factions of pureblood werewolves who want her dead, not wanting their bloodlines diluted by her half-breed blood. Then there are the werewolves who want to mate with her because female werewolves are scarce. All of them are now searching for her and she must depend on the stranger, Joshua Striker, to keep her safe as they make their way to the protection of her father’s former pack. And if that wasn’t enough, she’s about to go into heat!

The other books in the series flow from the first one. (The Legacy series in order: Alexandra’s Legacy, Isaiah’s Haven, Legacy Found, Quinn’s Quest, Finding Chrissten and, coming in October 2012, Damek’s Redemption.)

What characteristic do you think all heroes should have?

A hero can be rough around the edges, he can be worldly, smooth and suave, or any combination between the two extremes. His appearance doesn’t matter as much as his character. A hero should be loyal and should live by a code of ethics, even if it isn’t the same one that is recognized by the rest of the world. He has to be willing to admit his flaws (even if it takes him a long time and brings much suffering for both parties until he does) and grow during the course of a relationship. He can be stubborn and, at times, conceited, but he can never be abusive for any reason. He is protective of his woman and family and puts them ahead of himself.

How do you ensure that a sex scene isn't over the top or unbelievable? How do you know when to draw the line?

It really depends on the characters. I honestly don’t think much about the sex scenes before I write them. I let the characters tell their story and try to stay out of the way as much as possible. I’ve often said that when I’m sitting at my computer I’m merely taking dictation. The characters tell their own tales and sometimes they surprise the heck out of me. I’ll read back over something I’ve written and be shocked that I actually wrote it, considering I’d never planned to go down a certain road to begin with. That’s part of what makes writing fun. J

As a result, my books vary greatly in the sex scenes from very graphic and earthy, to sweet and sensual and everything in between.

What is your favorite thing about being a Samhain author?

Where do I begin? I love everything about being a Samhain author. From owner Christina Brashear right down the line to all the talented people who work for the company, everyone has been wonderful to me from day one. I’ve had three different editors with Samhain and have learned so much from each one. Heidi Moore, my current editor, is always so enthusiastic about whatever path I want to take with my writing. A writer can’t ask for more than that! My fellow authors are so supportive, giving and kind. The cover artists are brilliant. And we have the best fans ever!

It's a warm summer's night and you are free to do anything you want! What would you do and who would you spend it with?

I would spend it with my husband, no question. We might watch a movie or go for a walk or simply hang out together. We’ve been together for a lot of years, but we never run out of things to talk about. We might even curl up and read, both of us on separate ends of the sofa. Not exactly earth shattering, but I’m a laid back kinda gal.

Samhain Nights: KAREN ERICKSON

We are kicking off our week long event SAMHAIN NIGHTS where we will be featuring authors published by Samhain Publishing everyday of the week.  Hopefully you'll discover some new to you authors that you should take a moment to look into, and if you've already read their books, then get to know them better!  Starting with Karen Erickson...

Hi Karen, you've written in many different genres such as contemporary, historical and erotica romance. Which would you say is your favorite and why?

First, thanks so much for having me here as a guest at the Under The Covers Book Blog! :)

Hmm, a favorite genre. I'm going to have to say contemporary because it's what I'm published in most and what I'm most comfortable writing. I also love reading a good contemporary romance.

Historicals are fun too. So much work and research involved but I enjoy that part of it. In fact, I can get all caught up in the research and forget to work on the book! Shame on me.

I'm not writing much erotic these days. But I can't shake the sexy bits from my books (and I don't want to!). I am not a closed-door-sex-scene author - I enjoy writing the sexy bits just as much as I enjoy reading them.

This July you have WORTH THE RISK coming out. Can you please tell readers about what this is about and why they should consider reading it?

WORTH THE RISK is the second book in my WORTH IT series (WORTH THE SCANDAL is the first), which is about three brothers who run their family's luxury goods business. This one is Hunter's story, the middle brother. He's completely stumped because the heroine, Gracie, acts like she doesn't want him. And he's not used to that. So he goes in very dogged pursuit of her, tries his best to wear down her defenses. And it works. Sometimes...

Poor Hunter. He doesn't understand why Gracie pushes him away. But she has her reasons and of course, they'll get their HEA. It'll just take some time to get there...

The third book is WORTH THE CHALLENGE, which comes out October 16th and that's the youngest brother, Rhett's book. Oh, I can't wait for that one to come out. Rhett is my favorite brother (but don't tell the other two!) and I'm excited for people to read his story.

There is also a fourth book in the series coming out in early 2013, entitled WORTH EVERYTHING. I can't say too much about it yet. The characters involved are a secret (I'm evil).

You also have A SCANDALOUS AFFAIR set to release with Carina Press. What would you say was the most difficult task with this book and how did you overcome it?

Great question - I had to get my hero in A SCANDALOUS AFFAIR, Hartwell, just right. There's a bit of a role reversal in this story. The heroine, Daphne, is the pursuer and Hartwell is more on the shy side. He has a stuttering problem and doesn't like to be in crowds, afraid people will mock him.

So I had to make sure that Hartwell came across strong enough. He's not a wimp but he's not as alpha as other heroes I've written. I do enjoy a good beta hero though. And Hartwell is alpha strong where it counts (in the bedroom for one, ahem).

For readers who aren't familiar with your work yet, how you would describe your style in a few words?

I write emotional, sexy romances. Sometimes light and flirty, sometimes dark and angsty...

Many authors get their ideas from everyday life. Do you have a story to share where your real-life experience has influenced your writing?

I tend to have little real life influencers show up in my writing all the time. For instance, in the third novella from my Fated series (SIMPLE TWIST OF FATE), the heroine gets stitches in her head. I had that happen to me years ago (a ceramic snowman fell on my head - I still own that killer snowman and set him out every Christmas). The stitches don't hurt so much - it's the shot in the head before the stitches that hurts like crazy. Eeep...

Also, I have a new book coming out with Entangled Publishing's new Bliss line (JANE'S GIFT), and the hero is a firefighter. My dad is a retired arson investigator. Long, long ago I was once married to a firefighter. So I sorta know what that's all about. *grins*

What is your favorite thing about being a Samhain author?

Their amazing covers. My awesome editor. The publisher support is above and beyond. All of my wonderful fellow Samhain authors - I am in such great company! My career really took off thanks to publishing with Samhain. There are too many things to list.... I heart Samhain. They're the best!

It's a warm summer's night and you are free to do anything you want! What would you do and who would you spend it with?

Well, I'd ditch my kids (sorry - love you guys!) and go hang out with my husband under a starry night sky. If I could REALLY do anything I wanted, I'd be in Hawaii with my husband under that starry summer night sky. Yeah, that sounds perfect....   ;)

Ms. Erickson is giving away a digital copy of the first book in her Worth It series, WORTH THE SCANDAL. If the winner has already read it, you get to choose from her Samhain backlist.

"Strictly business? Try telling that to her heart..."
"Worth It, Book 1"
Alexander Worth, President and CEO of Worth Luxury Goods, is a man never to be crossed. His unwavering sense of responsibility to the family business requires him to always be in complete and utter control. Until it comes to Tessa Crawford.
She's quietly professional, shy, voluptuous...and she works for him. Which means she is the one woman he must never touch, no matter how hard his gut twists with need for her.
After rising above her disadvantaged childhood, Tessa knows the last thing she should do is risk throwing it all away by falling into bed with her sexy boss. But on an extended European business trip, all self-imposed barriers burn away in the heat of their sizzling chemistry.
Once back home, though, whispers of corporate espionage turn into full-blown scandal-and Tessa finds out the hard way where Alex's loyalties lie. Determined to soldier on, she picks herself up and carries on with a secret, yet welcomed burden. Never guessing that Alex will make a reappearance in her life, ready to show her once and for all that family does, indeed, come first.
Warning: Contains a sweet-yet-strong woman, and a bossy alpha male brought to his knees by the woman he desperately loves. Involves enough begging and groveling that the reader may be tempted to "accidentally" leave it for her significant other to "find." For instructional purposes only, of course.
