Gleams of a Remoter World Tour

Author Override is the place where authors take the reins and take you on a journey into their world. Some may allow you into their private writing dens. Others may take you along with them on research trips or interviews. Whatever the case may be, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because here you’ll get an in-depth look into an author’s musings.

Hi There! Thanks for joining us on the virtual book tour for my newest release, Gleams of a Remoter World. All week long, I’ll be visiting some of our reader’s favourite blogs to talk about the book and how it came to be.

Enjoy! And in the meantime, if you'd like to find out more about me or my writing, please just drop into my website or my blog.

Soundtrack to Gleams of a Remoter World

As you may have seen elsewhere, Riptide Publishing have just been celebrating their first birthday with a month-long online party.  One aspect of the celebrations was a big mass-author interview, with all sorts of fascinating questions, and one of my favourite questions on that interview was, 'If your book was ever made into a film, which three music tracks would you like to use?'.

I answered the question with three tracks that were perfect for 'Gleams of a Remoter World', but the question really started me thinking.  Surely there were more than three tracks I could come up with, which would illustrate, or add to the atmosphere of, various scenes in the book?  I started to chew my pen, and hunt through files on YouTube and my own music collection, and bit by bit, I came up with the following play-list—I’ve linked to YouTube videos for each song, so you can listen with ease!

A great introduction to the novel and to any film that might be made of it!  Quiet, atmospheric, and very appropriate either to the opening credits or to the very first scene in the barn.

2.         Mary Black: 'Leaving the Land'.
For Chris's first visit to the ruined church and abandoned priest's house.  The lyrics would be a perfect accompaniment to the roofless buildings and toppled stone walls that Chris and Jo find.

3.         Japan: 'Ghosts'.
During the scene where the ghosts first appear to Chris.  The lyrics, and the incredibly spooky vocals of lead singer David Sylvian, still send shivers up and down my spine!

This is the particular track quoted from when Chris visits the ruined Celtic monastery so it would obviously be the perfect backdrop to his experiences there, as well as being beautiful enough and tranquil enough to suit the scenery and the poignant site of the monks' home.

5.         The Specials: 'Ghost Town'.
This track is perfect for the scene where Chris goes to Paulie's Liverpool home to try to find him.  The main chorus would be a wonderful refrain to his increasingly frustrating search.

6.         Abba: 'The Day Before You Came'.
Some people laugh at Abba but their later tracks are often exceptional, both musically and lyrically, and this has long been one of my favourites.  The contrast of the singer's dull everyday life with the promise of what happens the day 'you came' would be a great backdrop for Chris as he lives his solitary life in Ireland towards the end of the book.  I'm not saying any more for fear of spoiling the surprise!

I hope some of these tracks help set the mood for you before and after reading Gleams of a Remoter World!

Paranormal journalists Chris Mullins and Jo Perry are sent to Ireland's remote west coast to investigate tales of hauntings at a ruined church. Chris, who has an inbuilt sensor for ghosts, is drawn to the old priest’s house next door, where he faces an otherworldly encounter so strong it leaves him reeling. Their research leads to a tangled web of forbidden love, family rows, and even, possibly, murder.

Chris jumps at the chance not only to solve the mystery, but also to aim for the coveted Moondust Award, a prize for the first journalist who proves that ghosts exist. Jo, though, is less enthusiastic, both about the award and her on-off relationship with Chris. Things become even more confused when Chris finds himself falling for Paulie, one half of a gay couple on holiday in the same village.

Only the wild, haunted landscape of Ireland can give Chris the answers he so craves, but to find them, he may have to choose between the Moondust Award and the matters of his heart.

Author Bio: Fiona writes gritty yet darkly humorous fiction, often involving gay characters and almost always with a twist in the tail. Her work has been published in anthologies from the likes of Byker Books, Pill Hill Press, and QueeredFiction; as well as in magazines and online at sites such as The Pygmy Giant, Shotgun Honey, and Velvet Mafia.

Fiona currently splits her life between a pointy Victorian house in Birmingham (the original one in the UK) and a slate cottage within stone-throwing distance of England’s largest lake. She shuttles between the two so often it makes her head spin, which might explain the rather breathless style of her writing, but she hopes to be settled in Cumbria by the end of the year.

Eeek - sorry - just realised I said that I would link to YouTube videos for each track, and then I forgot to do it. ::headdesk::

I hope you can forgive me, and enjoy the virtual play-list anyway!

Wow - of all those I think the only one I've heard of is Abba...but to be fair I have fairly specific tastes in music - heavy metal, classical & some Jazz (Nina Simone & similar).
May be time to expand my horizons a little :)

This looks so awesome. Hope your move goes well, Fiona. I went to the Lake District once as a teenager (many moons ago) and was blown away by its beauty,

Thanks so much for all the great comments, I'm really pleased everyone enjoyed my posts so much. :)

I had a blast putting this playlist together and only wish I'd remembered to add the YouTube links - then again, some of them are unofficial versions which can cause problems... so perhaps better not. If you do track them down, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Thanks, Sue for your good wishes - actually the move happened a few months ago and we're now settling into our new home. I've loved the Lake District since I was about 8 years old and still can't believe how lucky I am!
